Yes they really are quite poor duelers. Chris the reason you weren't hit by shards is that the hack you refer to (called Flash) is not so much a cast rate hack than a client side graphic hack. They aren't really casting that fast, it just looks like it, so the "inbetweens" can't hurt you.

I had a little run in with some ex or current Ai members this weekend who got a little upset that their blizz sorcs, druids, and trappers weren't having any success (well, to be fair they did kill me by wp guarding with traps, tornados, and mindblast...) Someone named "stole" (again, what is it with these ******ed real names?) jumped on another members barb with the usual pre-duel threats & mouthing off -- and subsequently died horribly along with the excuse "I have no barb skills, this chars owner will destroy you", which was funny after beating the real owner of this barb ("Silen", another odd "real" name...) by even larger margins later in the day.
Strangely eric joined the game right after this (Ai on your friends list, eric? heehee) with that Pervert hammerdin and we had some desync hammer vs desync ww duels. The bastard beat me until I figured out how to use a really long wall properly and finally got a decent kill on him. Those duels sure are crapshoots though; resorting to random long south west WW seems to work reasonably well, as does running up and down a long wall. It's funny how dueling desync charging paladins is so similar to 1.09 dialup dueling running amazons with a running barb.. aim a screen or so ahead and you will probably hit.
