Pay someone a nice complement

I see this in almost every guide now: people will be talking about skills or equipment that go well together and they will use the word compliment which seems to imply that their itamz are saying nice things about each other.

The word these people probably mean is complement:

Now I understand most of you are famous basketball players, bounty hunters, and shuttle pilots, so you don't have a great need for godly English language skills, but it does get annoying after awhile.

Please learn the proper word :D

Re: Pay someone a nice complement

I would like to compliment you on clearing up all of this complicated complement confusion.

Re: Pay someone a nice complement

My god are we back in english 101 or is this a site about a game? Does it matter if some1 spells a word wrong? I dont think so..... as long as we no what he/she means.. Or should i not use IMO or NE1 or... cause they are all spelt wrong.. and maybe it's ok... just a thought.

Re: Pay someone a nice complement

It's not about spelling a word wrong, but using the wrong word. They both have completely different meanings.

----> See definitions for to, too and two.

IMO is an abbreviation. IMO using IMO is acceptable.
NE1 and some1 make you look silly, as does spelt instead of spelled.

The difference being that IMO is a quicker way to type in my opininion and you're not really butchering anything. IMO is not actually spelled wrong, but just a shortened version.

These three are spelled wrong:

NE1, some1 and spelt succesfully butcher three words. Start using these and it's a short leap to, "NE1 H4B FRE3 ITAMZ SOME1 GIB ME!" :soapbox:

Re: Pay someone a nice complement

The most concerning part is the native speakers posting way more mistakes than the non native speakers. :undecided:

Thats pretty much my stance on it.

Shorting "in my opinion" to IMO is fine, when you start adding in a letter that isn't even in the original word, then you have a problem. I.E. "plz". Since when it there a "z" in "please"? At least do "pls". Substituting a letter that doesn't exist in a word is just annoying and bad grammar. The difference between some1 and IMO, is its an abbreviation. You don't see LAPD standing for Los Angeles Officers Association or something like that.

NE1 is even worse to me. Does it really even take THAT much more time to type "one" rather than "1"? Thinking to hit "n" then "e" then "1" takes longer to me then just typing "anyone", even moreso having to hold shift on "n" and "e" then not mistakingly typing an "!". Learning to properly type fast and correct is something that needed more and more these days with so much done on computers, so better to get used to it now, rather than typing up reports for work in leet speak.

Meh, I guess I just felt like venting a bit on it was well. Mistypes are fine, as we all can get fat fingers every now and then, and don't want to backspace half our sentence in chat, but basic, just basic grammar does everyone the favor of being able to comprehend what the hell you are saying.

Non-native English speakers are exempt, they have a legitimate excuse. It is also ironic that some can type it better than native speakers.....

Oh and what the hell is up with two periods at the end of a trailing off sentences? Three or more seems fine. But two just seems like and odd amount like you hit the period button twice by mistake, or your not quite sure you're trailing off or not..... <-see, five works.

/rant

P.S. I love spell check in Firefox, I find it sad that I can read leet speak so well now, I know my post ain't grammar prefect, and yes, it hurts intelligent people's brain's trying to read a run on sentence when there should be a period or coma to help you not come off as a bad robot voice from the 80's.
