OT: Worst games of all time

chickenhed's "OT: Favourite games....." thread got me thinking about the opposite side of gaming. I don't usually buy games I end up disliking, but a few have slipped through the net:

1. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon. A shooter where it is easier and quicker to do everything with one character. Makes the term "four-man, squad-based" a bit redundant then.

2. Commandos 2. This requires the patience of a saint. Watching your monitor for 20 minutes and doing nothing whilst waiting for a gap in patrol routes is not a game, it's a sin.

3. D2/LoD: This game sucks away your free time like there's no tomorrow (is that a mixed metaphor?) You will never, ever be able to stop playing it completely. :wink3:

heres some of the crappy games i have made the mistake of purchasing:

True Crime: Streets of NYC (PS2) - decent game but it is the most bugged game i've ever seen. building disappear, you fall into the bluew void constantly, and the game seems to freeze every 10 minutes. Absolutely horrible. not to mention your fellow officers shooting you when you are trying to make arrests

Champions: Return to Arms (PS2)- basically an everquest knock off. main problem is almost all character skills are useless except for a couple boosts. no playstyle variety. everything is melee (which makes wizard absolutely useless)

Any DBZ game (PS2) - I love the cartoon but the game is just suxxor. pressing 13 buttons to turn super-sayain is dumb. pressing 10 more to shoot 1 kamahamaha is even dumber.

...this should be interesting.

1) Crazy Frog Racer: As if this frog wasn't annoying enough, they had to make a game out of it!!!

2) Any DragonBall Z Games: Lame version of any fighting games. Really.

3) 50 Cent Bulletproof: If you want a game that's worth 50 cents, get this one.

I know I will be flamed for this:
1) Doom 3. All people said - perfect graphic engine - BAH, if it is running slow on a computer with 1GB RAM, 2.4 GHz processor, 128MB Radeon9800, then there is something very bad about it. Some games from the same time had very nice graphics and they were fast!
2) HOMAM 4. Ugly graphics, bad game mechanics.

Yes - I don't play bad games - so I choosed games that most people say that they are good, but I disliked them.

and obvious - WoW, because it converted many of D2 true addicts to dark side.

I have to disagree with both logger120 and DementiaMaster, there is a DBZ game that is actually a good fighting game: DBZ Super Boutoden 2, it was the first DBZ fighting game, it's still kinda slow, but the movility is okay, the check boxes are well programmed and you could fight from a very long distance, not the best game ever but it's certainly good as not be called one of the worst games ever.

For the topic itself:

1.- FF Mystic Quest: Does this game even deserve to be called a FF? Slow game, predictable story, VERY lame graphics (they seemed to be nes graphics when it was a SNES game!! kirby for the nes had a lot better graphics!!!), LAME battle system (you could only control 2 chars! and if you wanted you could put your helping char in auto so you would only control 1!) VERY limited inventory and armors/weapons, VERY linear game, bah, not worth 5 minutes of playing.

2.- Superman (N64) Want to waste some dollars? buy this game. Or if you are a programmer and want to know what NOT to do in a game, get this one, a perfect example of what must not be done

3.- Carmageddon/Cruisin USA (N64) I don't which is worse

I  these threads.

It's hard to rank the worst so these are in no particular order.

Cybernoid (NES) - Impossibly difficult even in easy mode. The game consisted of 3 levels but good luck getting to the end of the first even. I think I did only once. Terrible gameplay and control also.

Pacman (Atari 2600) - I enjoyed the Pacman games ... except for this version. Quite possibly the worst game of all time.

Any trivia game played on early consoles - Just a terrible idea. If you could use a keyboard it wouldn't be so bad but you can't so it is.

This is it for now. I'm sure that I will think of plenty more over time.

Edit:Yes. Final Fantasy Mystic Quest belongs on the list also. This is not a FF game in my book. The only truely bad game with the FF name.

There are too many bad games. However you missed one worst of worst feature of Commandos game - watching for half hour while doing nothing is not enough, your mission sorce is based on "how fast you complete them". If they want you to complete mission fast, stop setting off the :censored: alarm, just shoot them.

My friend's and I used to play the board game Axis & Allies all through highschool, but the guy who owned the boards turned anal and wouldn't loan them too us after a time (something about beer stains ). Then the game came out on PC, and we tried it.

LOL, I think after close to 50 attempts, our record for longest game was 23 minutes - since the game crashed so often.

Edit: I almost forgot my favorite part. You could play against the computer, but I think the AI was written by a retarded monkey.

Any sportsgame out there. I hate sportsgames. I mean, what fun is it to play basketball on your computer? I'd rather go do it myself.

Tomb Raider - Running around for three hours shooting bats isn't my idea of fun.

E.T. - Atari 2600
This should be on top of everyone's list. Anyone who has ever played this crapfest will understand. I think the entire game was coded in about 20 minutes.

Ultraman - SNES
Pre-Street Fighter 2 fighting game. Only enjoyable when stoned. Only makes sense when stoned. Graphics will blow your mind ... when stoned.

:censored: - Atari 2600
Never heard of it? Good. I was wrong about E.T. - as bad a game as that one is, this one is so stupid and possibly even offensive that it is easily the worst video game ever conceived. EDIT: In fact, I think I'll just spare all of you the title of this one. If you really must know, you can PM me. You'll wish you never asked.

Read about the E.T. thingy, it sounds and looks stupid enough. Couldn't think anything worse.

the second one, was it something about racing game. If my guess is correct, it does not sound that bad, I understand some will consider it offensive.

I agree about sportgames... they're lame...
Same goes for racegames, IMO. Racing through a metropolis at 200 mph? I'd rather go do it myself...

And Tomb Raider isn't so bad...you could shoot bears too! And wolves!

Okay, maybe it is bad...

I think sports and racing games can be great fun, at least if you play with friends. Of course it's better play soccer, basketball or whatever in real life but it's not always an option.

And to race through a city is about as good as to attack things with swords irl.

I thought "Enter the Matrix" was pretty awful. It is a decent argument for why movies should never be made into games.

"Enter the Matrix" exhibited poor controls, a boring storyline, and an abysmal combat system. The game was also too easy. Because your character's health regenerated over time, even in the final, most "difficult" areas of the game you would be in no danger of getting killed if you just took your time clearing the areas. If you did manage to fend off boredom long enough to beat the game (which I did), the ending was far from rewarding -- just some cutscenes that looked like previews for the final two movies in the series (which were disappointing films themselves).

Games I bought that were bad:

Almost any of the old-style adventure games, including the Myst Games. You know the ones:
"You have found a key"
Whatever you do, it won't work if it would make sense for it to work, but if you try things randomly, sometimes they work, but by then, you are ready to go crazy with frustration and boredom. There are a few good ones, mostly the French-made ones (like Dracula Resurrection), and I do know a few people who actually like the others.

Newer games:
Project Nomads -- looked really good and played terribly

Giants Citizen Kabuto -- same as above

Another War (Mac version) -- WWII RPG --good game except for a bug where you could never advance past the first area

Kick Off 2002 -- soccer game that never worked right

Star Trek Starship Creator -- A real disappointment, not even a real game and not much or a "creator" either

Simon the Sorcerer II -- offensive, stupid, irritating

Bloodrayne -- disappointing and irritating

A lot of games, I had the opportunity to try a demo first so I could pick the good games and not the bad. And some games are not bad but I am really bad at them!

I had an old Atari 2600 many years ago, and this was one of the games I had for it. The only thing I can remember about it was trying to avoid falling into pits while wandering around as ET.

My vote for worst game goes to anything ever made for the Nintendo Virtua Boy, which should be considered a dangerous carcinogen for causing eye cancer.

I just remembered, when I was growing up I used to play my dad's old Intellivision game system. Does anyone remember this thing? It was made by Mattel in the 70's I think.

Anyway, it has some of the worst games I have ever seen. Some of the real gems I can think of are:

TRON - Picture guiding a stick figure around a poorly-designed maze, trying to stay on the screen, until you die (which usually doesn't take long, since the game controls suck and you get stuck to walls a lot). The longest I have ever lasted in this game before getting "GAME OVER" is about two minutes.

SOCCER - This game is just boring, the ball just goes out of bounds all the time (stopping play), and it is almost impossible for goalies to block goals, resulting in ridiculously high scores. What's worse, I think each game is supposed to be the full length of a real soccer match (1 hour).

Not all the games for Intellivision were bad, though. Burger Time and Space Armada were pretty fun.

imo about 75% of the games produced are rubbish. of course i havent played that many.
i think you can add every film/tv tie in game to a worst ever list. also, all those endless, cash in, once a year "updates" that add nothing new.

i read a teletext based magazine on channel4 tv here in england called gamecentral. they offer unbiased and often brutal reviews there and have even published some of my letters, so they must be very discerning!
page 305 if you have access. dune
