OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Started playing last Thursday. My ranger is level 51 now. Awesome game so far. I hit a gear block at around levels 30 and 50. No problem though since crafting a new weapon solved that nicely. I'm in Cruel Act III now, and resistances are indeed important. Some rare mobs (elemental damage, increased critical strike chance etc.) just completely blow up my character if I'm not careful. The experience loss keeps a casual gamer like me on my toes even on Default (softcore) league.

I'm actually kind of torn between full elemental and full physical ranger. My build is currently aimed at full ele, but I just crafted a nice physical damage bow and I'm having a lot of fun with Frenzy (faster attack speed) + Split Arrow + Projectile Weakness (increased projectile damage, chance to knockback etc.) curse. Actually, my build is almost a hybrid at the moment: I have a few +% elemental damage nodes and a few +%physical damage and +% crit chance/crit multiplier nodes. Not sure where to go, so my first character is probably going to end up "suboptimal" (oh, the horror!).

Anyway, it seems the servers are really unstable now that prime time started in Europe.

edit: Three uniques so far. A couple of nice twinking items, I think.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Man, everyone loves the bows! I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the classes, the whole idea of them not really having any differences other than their starting passive tree position and their level up bonuses is still weird to me.

I'm maybe 1/3 through act 3 now. I agree that resistances are rather important, especially on bosses.

Does anyone know you're energy shield works? Is it applied before or after evasion/armor/resistances?

My ranger is also going to be rather sub optimal as well, I'm just picking things I think look good at the time, and it's easy to get off on a tangent for sure. I've been using exploding arrow a bit more since I found it at the start of act 3. Looks like it could be pretty good. I'm also leveling up frenzy, even though I don't use it. Looks to be a good skill when I can pair it with other stuff better.

A dude in college was talking about this game a lot... I have to really control myself and not download it :p

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Still chugging along and up to about lvl 21 now. Couple of questions:

How do people stay stocked up with wisdom (identify) scrolls? If I collect all the base items to get the scraps to make the scrolls then i keep having to TP back to town frequently and I start running out of TP scrolls. If I only collect blue/yellow items then I don't get the scraps to make the scrolls and I can't identify them!

I see some of you have picked up uniques. Where have you found them? I have had 27% increased item rarity for a while now and have been rekilling some of the boss monsters but nothing so far (not even getting many rares from them. More from just random drops.

Has anyone done much trading yet? What is the order of value for all the differnt orbs/currency items?

Lots of fun so far and a lot to learn!

I have the same trouble. Also, it appeared to me that some items became 'worthless' after a certain point, i.e. I was picking up every little thing to sell thinking I could earn my scrolls but some items didn't appear to earn me even an ID scroll. Maybe I was just sleep deprived... At that point I started just picking up armors and blue/yellow items. Armors seem to always give at least one id scroll whereas weapons didn't seem to earn.

I'm only level 9, just got through the murky passageway or whatever it's called.

Is everyone/anyone doing full clears or just heading for the next area? I've inadvertently done full clears of every area getting lost and/or looking for the next area. Is anyone besides Dave doing boss runs? I've re-killed a few bosses/magic enemies as I've had to re-enter respawned areas (this is one aspect I don't particularly like, but I suppose it's less drain on the server than dropping and restarting a game. As I'm questing I'm wishing the timer was longer but I suppose when it comes time to farm I'll wish it was shorter :))

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

I skip enemies in some areas, like the forest/jungle in Act II (I just hate that place), but other than that I try to kill as much as possible. Playing untwinked it's great to be 1-2 levels higher than the mobs.

Wisdom/TP scrolls start dropping more often later in the game. I think selling normal quality jewellery gives Scroll Fragments (five can be turned into a one Scroll of Wisdom), not sure though. I just farmed the Docks in Act III (on Cruel) and got plenty of them. I proceeded to finish Cruel difficulty and spent like 15 TP scrolls on the last boss, though :badteeth:

With that being said, I do farm some areas for items. Ledge in Act I, Fellshrine Ruins in Act II and the Docks in Act III, for example. Mostly looking for good bases to spend my orbs on. All the uniques I've found (four now) have been pretty useless. It's much better to look for a good base (ie. one with good gem slots), upgrade it (Blacksmith's Whetstone adds +5% quality to a normal quality weapon) and then use an Orb of Alchemy to make it Rare quality. A bow with six gem slots and +20% quality (added damage) = possible win when turned to a rare.

Some people probably save their orbs for end game gear, but I just find it frustrating to spend one minute killing normal mobs while leveling etc. Thus, I have upgraded my bow pretty much every 10 levels or so. It's just so tempting to play the slot machine with the orbs!

As for trading, I haven't done any. Seems too much of a hassle this early in the game. Someone on the official forums linked this currency exchange table, but I don't know how many people actually use it.

I can answer few questions. First of all, all classes get same lvl up bonuses too! The only difference is the starting position at skill tree and the starting base dex/int/str and the looks. You dont get any of those stats from lvling up.

Energyshield works after armor/resistances. It goes like evasion>armor/resistance>energy shield. But chaos damage (sort of the poison damage) goes past energyshield directly from your life bulb. The sewers in act3 have a lot of chaos damage.

When you plan a char, make sure to get all 3 stats at a minimum of 60-100 since these will be needed to use gems. After that, plan a lot of lifenodes, or in case you plan at an ES build, avoid all life nodes.

My experience so far is that this game is pretty hard and going all offense + lifesteal is not going to work since monsters tent to burst a lot of long ranged damage. for this reason it is nice to get a flask with prefix instant healing. We all know from d2 rejuvs are so powerfull because they instant heal and superhealing potions are pretty useless in emergency situations

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Good info, thanks!

I have had no issue finding plenty of scrolls, in act 3 I think I have over 100 wisdom and 50 tp. I rarely buy gear though from the vendors, and I also rarely ID items that aren't of a base/sockets that look useful. If the item looks like it might be useful for another character I might just leave it in my stash un-IDed. Otherwise I'll just sell it to the vendor un-IDed. I used to pick up lots of stuff, now I mostly just pick up all rares and blues that look useful.

Midway through act 3 now. Getting a bit tired of the ranger, but I'll keep going until I finish the act I think.

I try to mostly full clear areas the first time I get to them, but after that I just get through them.

I'm not crazy about the instances resetting. It's annoying to go down to a sub area and have a new map when you come back out. Or to die and not be able to walk back to where you were from the wp. On the other hand I do agree that it's kinda cool for endgame, you can just keep moving back and forth between a few areas in the same game.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Thanks guys. Interesting stuff.

I have considered going the route you have Kestegs and just not IDing any blues that don't seem useful to my character. Seems easier than collecting a whole bunch of whites to sell for scraps to get scrolls.

Thanks for the currency table Zarqu. Gives me a good idea of what order I should value my currency items. Not really planning on doing any trading at this stage but if anyone has a passable level 20-odd claw I'd be interested.

My character is Sceaduwe.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Actually, I'm stocking everything but orbs of transmutation (i.e. if I find a good superior/normal base, it becomes magic non-questions asked). I'm saving chaos orbs and friends to late game gear. Problem is: I don't know what is end game gear :whistling:.

While I know a couple things I want, I don't know what to stack right away... My little marauder wants some infro from rangers:

- How much dex you need to reach high levels with elemental green gems?
- Which bow is "endgame material" and when should I start looking for it (act 3 docks in normal can drop something useful?)?

Have 2 go now, cya!

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

About scrolls of wisdom: most players (myself included) only identify rares and the few blues that look like they might be useful for you, that way you have plenty of leftover scrolls. I even leave most blue on ground and only vendor items with quality for armor scraps/whetstones (that is one of the many vendor recipes, a list can be found here: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/15223).

Full clears: I find that I'm consistently outlevelling content by 1-2 levels by simply doing the quests in normal difficulty, so there is little reason for doing full clears, unless you enjoy playing that way.

I'm midway through act2 with my duelist, hope to give the 3rd try to beating act3 and normal difficulty soon. My goal is to do it solo, and start teaming in cruel, if I finally make it there.

the required dex for gems becomes higher when they lvl up, they usually end up somewhere around 40- 100. some examples from the dex you might be interested in:

-haste aura: 85
-pierce: 74
-faster attacks: 82

Your endgame might have some +dex stats, so it is ncie if you can take some 30dex node now which you can remove later when you dont need it anymore. Allthough 30 dex also gives 60 accuracy and 6% evasion.

Bows and armors can get up to 6 socket and an endgame bow would have 5 or even 6 linked sockets so you can give your main attack as many as possible supportgems. I found so far just 1 5 socketed armor in cruelty.

update about my exploration in the poe world. Ive been mostly theorycrafting about characters and reading forums and made 5 characters from scratch each time starting over again haha. Currently I dont believe anymore an energyshield based defense is going to work, mainly because there are no energyshield potions. Im now making a templar planning at making him very tanky with lots of life and shield nodes then going all the way to the right taking static blows and eldritich battery for massive amount of mana so I can use 5-7 auras. then at endgame I go into the shadow base nodes, since basenodes are in general somewhat stronger. completing my build with some more lightning synergy. My main attack in my armor (with 5-6 sockets) will be lightning strike and offcourse tempest shield in soem 4 socketed item putting the auras/curse in the other items. plan
It is basicly a tesladin.

I got one more tip about loot. When you drop a skillgem you allrdy have, you should allways hover over it with your mouse to check for increased quality, they dont say "superior" when they are. I was very sad when I found this out thinking about I might have missed some superior skills.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Just 100? It's doable, them. I don't use accuracy, I use the marauder build with resolute technique, blood magic and elemental damage. In the path of elemental damage/projectile damage I will get some dex nodes, so probably I won't need extra dex. Since I won't even use bow physical damage, maybe I'll stuck with the first fast 5-socket bow that shows up. Thanks for the info!

(Here is a base for marauder elemental archer build. From that you add elemental damage/life/armor/resists/bow damage, whatever is lacking - I plan to do this)

I never realized gems could be superior.

I'm enjoying resolute technique with almost any non-crit oriented build. It cuts down the need for dex/accuracy on gear, something big when you have no dex from class.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

Just a quick note to everyone. If you don't already keep a copy of your content.ggpk file. It can become corrupted and lead to a long download to replace it. If you have the copy it should just be a simple matter of renaming it to content.ggpk again and off you go.

Re: OT: The SPF Path of Exile Thread

I heard about that file, thanks for the reminder.

It's a static file or something that changes as I progress (like shared stash), so I need to back it up once in a while?
