OT: Need a new TV series

Going to have a little time on my hands coming up and wanted to get into any good TV series people out there recommend.

I have watched Dexter, 6 feet under, Sopranos, Sex in the City, Glee, and others. I liked all of these. I heard the Wire is awesome and have been considering that. I know there are many great series out there. I am curious what the D2ers are into. Thanks.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

For crime shows, try the Sherlock Holmes mini-series. It's basically the same chars set in a modern Britain. Another series I will recommend is the Mentalist.
For comedy, try Happy Endings or Modern Family. Happy Endings is like a funkier version of Friends, and Modern Family is a family comedy.
All the series I recommended are really popular, and have 2 or even 3 or 4 seasons. Good for tv marathons.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Okay first of all, go watch the wire, now. It's that awesome.

After you're done with that, here is a list:
- The Wire (You forgot it, didn't you?)
- Breaking Bad (Awesome drama with Bryan Cranston as lead role, he won an Emmy three years in a row for outstanding lead actor)
- Game Of Thrones (The books are great, and the show is being quite true to it)
- Deadwood (The show got the axe after season 3 I believe, but still worth a watch)
- Oz (First big TV drama by HBO. Not my favorite, but still a classic)
- Heroes (The first seasons are the best, but still worth your time IMO)
- Lost (Epic confusion is epic.)
- Sons of Anarchy (About a Motorcycle gang. VERY good IMO.)
- Boardwalk Empire ( America during the 20 and 30's, it's got bootlegging, cool gangsters and Martin Scorsese as executive producer and he directed the pilot episode. sort of a new show, but it has potential)

For comedy I only have a few suggestions. Comedy has never been my thing.
- Bored to death.
- Eastbound and down.
- How I met your mother.
- It's always sunny in philadelphia.

Check the shows out on IMDB if you want to know some more, (or simply just take my word for it) explaining all these shows in depths would result in me creating a WoT, and I don't feel like that right now:P

Comedy - "How I Met Your Mother", Barnabus Stinson, nuff said.
Maybe "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" if you can handle the weirdness. The arguements and rants in this show are quite legendary. Like how I threw that in there HIMYM fans?

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

How could I forget HIMYM! Great show! And "It's always sunny in philadelphia" is great too!

Franklin, you complete me:cloud9:

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Heroes is great, especially the first couple of seasons. Unfortunately, it ended up getting cancelled, and never really got an ending.
I never really got Lost. It just seemed to go on forever, and was just confusing at parts.

Game of Thrones (only one season so far) for the fantasy/medieval era, but overall a great adaptation of the books.

I don't really get into many series on TV, but those two are favourites of mine. And Scrubs, but that goes without question.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Just added some more to my list. How could I forget Sons of Anarchy and Boardwalk Empire! And I'm sure that I've forgot something still:P

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I have been in love with Spartacus ever since it came out. The first season is on Netflix and the prequel might be on there by now. Plus their both on DVD and the 2nd season is out now. The actor who played Spartacus died though, so there's a new guy doing that. Still an awesome show if you liked the movie 300. Game of Thrones was really great as well!

My wife and I enjoyed watching True Blood. The first couple of seasons were really good, while the last season was a little more out there. Still a good series. Weeds was also pretty good for the first few seasons as well.

Watched the first episode of Boardwalk Empire and we liked it, but haven't had the time to watch any more. I've heard great things about Dexter and Deadwood though.

GL with whatever you decide to watch.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

How come noone has mentioned Buffy and Angel? Have seen all episodes a couple of times over.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Pretty great suggestions in here. I recommend the sherlock holmes mini-series as well.

Also, band of brothers. It's a mini-series of 10-episodes, and it's great.

For comedy, I'd recommend archer. Animated and hilarious. Community is also worth watching, imo.

edit:can't believe no one mentioned scrubs.

I forgot to mention the Big Bang Theory. Also very funny.

And I second Fyourics' Band of Brothers! Truelly amazing mini series. The Pacific was made a couple of years ago to show that part of WW2 but is not as great as BoB. Also Generation Kill if you like war stories. It's Iraq war.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

or you could stop watching TV and go out :p

"The Walking Dead"!!! no one?
Also in Comedy "S^*! my dad says" just for Shatner. I think I was cut after 1st season.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

The walking dead is.....missed opportunities all around. It's become way too much family drama with zombies appearing for a minute per episode. Meh, it's decent, but it could have been so much more.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Band of brothwers roxks. Just finished watching on TCM
Hustle from the beginning if you haven't seen it.
The only thing i actually record so I dont miss is Hawaii five0. just for the theme tune.

*does rubbish surfing motion

edit: best ever was flashforward but cancelled after one series. Well annoyed

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

The new BBC version of Sherlock was excellent. The American film I turned off after five minutes.

Here's an artical on a few series which looked interesting. Link is via the Wayback Machine because The Independent seems to have an issue.

I enjoyed Luther a while ago. I believe the third series should be around now.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Also, coupling. The only british comedy I've liked, but then again I haven't watched black adder yet, and people rave about it.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I found each series of Blackadder slightly different in tone so if you hate series 1 (I did because I loathed a couple of the characters), 2, 3 or 4 might still be for you.

Personally, I still think the best series was Babylon 5. Ignore the setting, great comedy, drama, characterizations and an overall story across five seasons. Season four was a bit rushed due to uncertainty about funding for series 5 but still the best out there and aged very well. (Unlike TNG IMO.)

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Skjolde has the best list.

The Wire is the best show of all time, closely followed by Breaking Bad and ER and NYPD Blue. Cracker is an absolutely amazing UK crime drama. I've just started watching Deep Space Nine from the beginning and I'm really getting back into it. You may like Friday Night Lights, though the second season is a little weak from what I've heard. Life with Damien Lewis is excellent, and managed to be wrapped up in two seasons.

HIMYM is awesome, and Modern Family for the comedy shows. I could never get into Arrested Development.

Carnivàle, Sleeper Cell and Brimstone are excellent shows that got cancelled before their time.

Can't mention Band of Brothers without The Pacific, though BoB is superior IMO.

Honourable mentions for The Shield and Sliders.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

I was coming to suggest Six Feet Under, then I saw that you already watched it. It's so awesome!

If you enjoyed Sopranos and Six Feet Under, go watch The Wire! These three make my top 3.

Other TV Shows that I find very good: Breaking Bad, Deadwood, Huff, The Walking Dead, Sherlock, Homeland, Game of Thrones and Rome.

Nice comedies: Spaced, Arrested Development and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. All very peculiar, the first is just perfect, the second very special and the last weirdly awesome.

"Cool" shows: Californication and Entourage.

Re: OT: Need a new TV series

Scrubs. And when you're done with that - Scrubs again.

Also, Beverly Hills. The original thing. Yes, I like it, shoot me.
