Ot: Hellgate London

It would be cool to try a few games with other Dii.net'ters. That is if your MP'ing.

What do you need to find people, character or account name?

I'd like to know if it's worth buying this game for single player only. I'm not going to play it online at all. What do you think?

I've read a rather bad review today in a norwegian newspaper (online) and they didn't even mention that there was a single player option. :sad2:

Moar, I'll let you know once I get farther. So far, I'm having a great time on the SP version... had a hard time turning it off to go to bed. From what I can see so far, It's basically D2XP, with more interesting equipment options, and with decent 3D graphics.

I only have one complaint so far: there isn't really any voice acting. NPC's have some things they say when you click on them (most of which seem to be rather silly), but all the real story is in cut-scenes and text. The text, instead of voice acting, feels a little cheap.

@zenithsmith: I only have experience with older members of that Intel line. Assuming things haven't changed too much, they're pretty decent in terms of feature support. But they're sorely lacking in terms of processing power.

Character name I think, but I'm not certain, the chat interface put me off trying to find a party, that and my computer probably wouldn't like 5 characters worth of stuff going off at once.

Anyway, if you feel like some MP I'll be online in a bit, just whisper me or something, assuming you're on Sydonai. I've got an Evoker about to head towards Chocolate Park. Character name's SoJ, I'll be playing the complete opposite way I play D2 though (ie really slowly) until I've gone through normal once.

got my copy today but off to the pub tonight, i'll look you up once i'm all sorted tomorrow at some point. agree with you on the chat interface, as it's built in as hidden it seems out-of-place when its active :/

This sounds awesome, i probably wont get it for a bit considering my Dvd drives broke. Otherwise, id say my comp will meet the requirements cause its a 2.8 ghz processor, so hopefully.

Anyway id probably only SP cause of dial up connection.

What im wondering is about the view, i know theres FP and TP, but is the third person a set view or is the view completely rotatable or are there a few set views like isometric, birds eye etc?

Also are there unique/set equivalents? cause from what i seen it looks like base equipment, and the godly stuff just has add-ons.

I play Shulgoth, am currently a lvl 17 Marksman (Bad choice, very underpowered at this stage, still fun though). Feel free to message me, his name is 'Arid' (without quotations obviously).

Joosh

The view is rotatable in third-person, there really isn't that much reason to use first-person unless you have a really long-range weapon. I prefer third-person when throwing nades anyways...

The first-person camera view works better when trying to shoot enemies out of the air (you can aim higher), and it also makes opening chests a little easier. But otherwise, I prefer the over-the-shoulder view.

The game is *terrific*. Granted, I'm only a few hours in... but I'm having a blast. The one thing that seems greatly improved over Diablo is the variety of the areas and the sheer number of quests. In D2, there are 27 quests in the whole game... I've finished off more than that in the first few hours of HGL.

Really?! How did you find it at lower levels?

My marksman is level 12 right now and I havent had a problem at all, except one death due to my own stupidity rather than inability to kill.
Then again I have found a unique volt rifle already :D

are the graphics load about the same in the SP demo as online?

I've been downloading the demo for some days now and hope that it runs ok

I must say I'm really disappointed with this game. I have only played the demo though and rumor has it that the demo is a really bad one. Anyway, main complaints...

1) Graphics. I appreciate that you don't need a computer from the future to play HGL (like with many other games) but I still think that the graphics isn't good enough. The textures are so dark it's a strain on the eyes to play, the walls have a "paper thin" feeling about them and some animations are really bad (like when boxes splinter).

2) Gameplay. My impression of melee combat is; "*wiff* with the sword and zombie 5 meters away dies anyway". The ranged combat doesn't come close to games like Half Life 2 or Doom 3.

3) The NPC interaction. I guess it's meant to be retro style but why no voice acting what so ever when taking quest?! Instead the NPCs pop some random comment at the same time they're "talking" with you. And you have to read it all because there's no summary in the quest log (correct me if I'm wrong).

4) Game trailer. Worst case scenario, low-budget, day-time broadcasted, sci-fi series *shivers*. Maybe irrelevant for the game though.

Is any of this different in the final game?

The graphics are better in the real game than in the demo. I've noticed quite a difference. There is also more variety.

You're comparing apples and oranges. This is NOT an FPS, despite the possibility of playing from a first-person perspective. If you want a great new FPS, try BioShock. If you want an ARPG, try HGL.

Yes, this annoys me, too. But you can always reread their comments in the quest log (there's a speech bubble icon in there you can click, to see the entire speech again).

And by the way: the demo does NOT represent the game well at all. The actual game is much, much better.

The hit ranges are tighter now, so chances are that if you hit something, you had the crosshairs over it and swung in range. Except for smashing boxes and barrels, because who wants to waste time hitting each box in melee?

There is some good and bad aspects of this game having played a fair bit now. I have a level 14 marskman and a level 9 guardian, both SP.

The actual combat is pretty good. there is enough skills and options for you to apply a good sense of strategy when chopping monsters. It isn't just about standing toe to toe with them and clicking them to death. You can back track, use obstacles tactically, jump attacks, circle strafe etc. Assuming you can set the controls up the way you like. I can't.
Comparing this game to a FPS like doom or quake is wrong. This is going back some years but the game play is more like Heretic, Hexen 1 & 2 or thief.
There is enough item collection, mods, enhancements, crafting, sell/buy to please the most avid D2 Holy grailer item geek too.

But the game has many down falls.

NPC's. The majority of npc's that I have interacted with are all luny bin escapees. They give you stupid quests such as collecting beer making ingredients, delivering IOU notes, Bottling evil?? and killing boss monsters. The rewards are the same each time, a bit of money, some exp and a pick of an item. D2's quests are far superior as they relate to the storey line and offer differing rewards. HGL literally bombards you with a hundred or so useless quests with little variety.
The maps are also the same thing over and over and over. Just like D2. You get the same random mapping that D2 uses to create its dungeons and outdoor areas using premade tiles. But D2 can get away with it because it is a low res visual game thats over 7 years old. HGL can't. Other games such as doom 3, quake 4, half life, fear, prey, heretic, Hexen, etc all manage to supply hours of game play thru unique corridors and open outdoor areas without repeating itself over and over again. The atmosphere of the dungeons and outdoor city street areas of HGL are good, but it is the same over and over again.
There are an assortment of unique maps in the game, but these are too few and far between, drowning in a myrad of yet another map of the same sewer tunnels and same streets, desolate buildings and wrecked police cars.

At this stage, I'd say the game is a major disapointment. But, and this is a big butt  , With a fair amount of tweeking and patching, flagship could whip this game into something that truly shines. It has potential. I have yet to play a game that didn't have some flaws in it. What makes a game better than all the others is how well it succeeds in game play and providing enjoyment. If a game becomes boring to play, then the flaws begin to wear you down to breaking point where you stop playing. D2 is such a game. The game play is so good that you don't even notice the repetitive map tiles or ancient looking graphics.
Flagship needs to lift the game play head and shoulders over its inherent flaws in order to call itself a worthy successor to diablo. Otherwise it's just another wannabe.

Abstract repetition and visual repetition are both repetition (doom 3, quake 4, half life, fear, prey, prey, heretic, hexen have repetitions, not necessarily a bad thing...)

Sounds like a good game now and potentialy a great one after the expansion comes out. D2 also had major limmitations that LoD fixed or expanded on.

Area scenery differences in D2 in act 1:

1. Caves (all the same).
2. Dungeons (all the same).
3. Grassy places (all the same).
4. Outer and Inner Cloister (basically the same).
5. Tristram.

In HGL, I have not yet hit another video cut-scene, so I imagine I'm still in "act 1". And I've encountered the following scenery:

1. Sewers.
2. Narrow city scapes.
3. Wide open city scapes.
3. Subway tubes.
4. "Dark" versions of the three above.
5. The British Museum.
6. Chocolate Park.
7. Hellgate areas.
8. "Step into Hell" area (very different from #7).
9. Treasure caves/passages.

Anyway, I'm not sure if HGL actually has more video cut-scenes, so maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges... but I suspect that it must, and that I'm still only in the first part of the game. It looks like more variety than D2 to me!

EDIT: I guess I'm technically in "act 2" according to HGL wiki. But still, if you add in sand, tombs, the maggot lair, the Arcane Sanctuary and the Palace, then HGL is still about even with D2 in terms of variety.
