OT: First Titan Quest report

OK. Promised you guys I would let you know how my experiences with the new game and PC worked out and so here we go.
First the new PC. 3 ghz, 1 G ram, 256mb card (can't remember which).
The game:
The movement is very similar to Dii. It feels a little funny and you can zoom in & out but the perspective takes a little getting used to.
The graphics are great & I am only running the video settings on medium; will try them higher soon.
The combat is also similar to Dii; although the monsters will chase you a lot further if you run.
The leveling and placing of the skill & stat points are similar but there is a much greater variety of ways to build your character and 2 masteries available for each character, you can choose from 8.
I have read up on a few builds and am playing probably one of the most proven builds for success and thus far am doing well.
I have read online about a lot of the problems that other folks are having with the game but after installing it and the two patches I am very happy with the way the game is playing. I have dropped once in about 3 hours of playing and that may have been because I hit a bad key.
I do think you need a PC with stats equal to mine to play without problems and believe that is where others are screwing up.

Well that's it for now. The game is fun so far and I have hopes it will replace the Dii addiction I have had for so long. There are a few things I would change about it but hell, there are a few things I would change about Dii too. My most recent experiences in Dii have had me fighting lag and a few TPPKers and I don't have that problem here so at least that is an improvement. Anyway I will let you guys know by the end of the weekend, if my wife will let me really play; what I think about the game being a good buy and substitute for Dii.

Very nice!
Is the game really fun?
Thanks for the report, I might look into this around August when I actually get a good computer worthy of it. Good luck on your adventures!

Ok. I have about 8 hours in the game and am level 14, playing a build called an Oracle. It is a combination of Spirit and Storm skills and is a caster.
All I can say is wow. Better graphics. Same player movement. Better skill and stat placement (at least I think so). Great new unknown areas to explore. Really like discovering Dii for the first time.

Like Dii there are sets and rare and magical items. Have not seen any uniques but there are small items that can form kinda mini-sets which can be applied to the various parts of armor and increase various aspects of your character.

Most of my play has been on single player but spent about an hour playing in online multi tonight and had no problems.

I would like to change a few things in the game such as not having a stash in camp when you go there; this causes some problems as to which items to keep. I preferred the Guild Wars concept of all characters sharing a large stash for each account. But overall I would say it has been the most fun I have had since I started Dii. Maybe I will come back someday but for now I am very happy just playing Titan Quest.

Sounds like a very interesting game to try out.

I might give it a go too :)

What about online-play! Different realms as Diablo or different servers as WoW or all on the same?

/Magnus

Magnus, the online play is probably different from both of those. Near as I can figure there are several (many?) servers and when you go online there is a list of games playing on the 1 (more?) server you can see. You can look for open games or locked (passworded) games and if you don't see the one you are looking for you refresh the screen to see more available. You can also use a filter to look for a specific game, like if you were gonna join a friend and he told you the game name, and the filter will remove a lot of games that do not match your filter.

One aspect of the game is the ability of the individual hosting the game to boot a specific character out of the game; or to list his name and not allow him to even enter.

There are no talk or trade channels as of yet, or at least I don't know about any, but I do know that the developers do have plans for changes in the future.

All in all a very good game; as I said previously the perspective takes some getting used to but still simple movement. The MOST important thing to remember is that some people have had problems running the game. I have not and I BELIEVE the reason is that I have a PC that meets the suggested specs.

I've been playing Titan Quest for a week now. Given that I tend to play new games by devoting all my time to them, I now have a 28 conjurer and a 17 slayer.

You'll find that the ternion attack gets boring as its crazily overpowered.

One of the main differences in online play would be that there are NO closed servers. TQ doesn't host servers, its basically open b-net. This has inherent issues such as allowed hacking/creating of items, which messes up trading (which generally is done by verbally agreeing you are both legit). If this game catches on enough for them to implement a closed system with characters that are stored on their servers and not on our hard drives, then you very well could see a game superior to d2.

The graphics are stunning, the gameplay fun (though there may be a few balancing issues with skills, since they appear to be taking active interest in the game and releasing patches, perhaps they will address them), and the kill and get loot- kill and get loot- kill and get loot addiction from Diablo is also there.

I'd have to endorse the game as well, go give it a try, at least if your computer can handle it. I do know that a ladder reset will still draw me back to d2, but this game has real potential.

Heh, I just bought it from an online-retailer, so hopefully I can try it out later this week :)

Thx for all info, very much appreciated!

Pawn, I have noticed that the ternion attack is very powerful. That is the reason I started with a Spirit based caster to take advantage of the skill.

It is funny. I have heard people downgrade Titan Quest because of some skill unbalancing or some other reason like the lack of runes and runewords. I remember when there were no runewords; also know that I never got to make any of the powerful words because I never found high enough runes. I also remember when several of the characters in Dii were so powerful that Blizzard had to patch and upgrade the game to make it more fair. When you think about the number of patches Dii has had and the changes made, you might think that Titan Quest will be doing things similarly and that the game will become better as time goes on.

Is there hardcore mode? If so I might get it. I found GW and WoW absolutely disgusting, the idea of living forever.....

multiplayer

I played the demo. It was pretty fun. I played as a warrior that dual weilded swords.

I am interested in what the multiplayer aspect of the game is like, because it determins the amount of replay value it has.

Do you quest a lot in multiplayer?

Do you kill bosses to find items, like in d2?

Is there any pvp?

God damn it, i am haunted by that "computer turns off itself or freezes completely" thingy.

I can't play the game properly and i have to say it sucks.

I'm running a laptop with 2,8 GHz, 1 GB Ram, ATI graphics card (Mobility Radeon 9000) and should clear the requirements they say.

I guess i wait for next patch since i am far from alone with this kind of problem according to their own forums :(

Magnus, I think you may need to change the settings. I am running everything on medium now and still am able to enjoy the graphics and gameplay although I have been on a couple of times when the character movement was a bit jerky. I have dropped from the game twice in 20 hours.

Belaron, there is multiplayer and you can quest there just as in single player; and can import you character from single player into multi. You do quest and seek loot as in Dii. There is boss killing but the majority of my item rewards come from chests and the like. Many caves & tombs & etc. exist with many levels and difficult monsters to kill. All of them have chests and such to loot; some have Majestic Chests. These, many times, have very good items.

I will make one last try and set everything down to lowest settings and see if that solves the problem, I hope it does :)

Thx for feedback /Magnus

The game is still fun for me. I have not been back to Dii yet and I am sure most of my less valuable mules have expired by now. I don't think a ladder reset would bring me back but that depends how far in the future it is.

As for Titan Quest, the game does have some bugginess when you try to play online multiplayer. This is the only hangup I have with it. There is a new online way to mule your items and this game is so full of items that are worth keeping you really do need that feature; although it was devised by a player and you need two computers to do it you only need one copy of the game.

The thing that is so enjoyable about the game to me is to see the full graphic effects of the spells and attacks that the characters get when fighting. You really see the monsters being knocked back or even lifted off the ground and then them falling down. There is not yet a hardcore creation mode but it is very difficult to get through even the first degree of difficulty without dying. It is possible but I think any who have done it have really researched the game and gotten wind of some of the truly tough monsters that will appear out of the blue. There is just no way you can blindly tough your way through unless you get really lucky. I can play any character in Dii through nightmare without dying because I am so familiar with the game. Hell is more difficult but I have done it numerous times also.

Titan Quest has a few monsters that make Diablo and Baal look like the wussies they really are - and in 3D graphics. So make up your own minds. The game is far from perfect and needs patching for improved online gameplay but I remember all of the patches we went through to get Dii to the game we play today. Hell, at one time, just going through the portal to kill Duriel with the loading lag almost guaranteed death. That had to be changed along with alot of other things. So it is my hope that Titan Quest will not only be the good game it is but the much better game it could be.
