OT: 42.195 reasons why I rule

Awesome, Det! This is great news and, not to mention, inspiring! I have plans to participate in half a marathon next year, just to prove the world I am able. I suppose that's about the same reason you had? :)

Very nice to hear! *hm* Maybe I should put my jogging shoes on...

Toli, from what I read in your other threads about your incredible weightloss, I am absolutely sure that you will suceed in this one as well.

My brother was close to the finishing line when I arrived. He made some pictures...and in the good tradition of "more-of-me-than-you-care-to know"...here they are

That expression tells me I really should make an effort to try and do what you've done. That happy and proud face of a man telling the world he did what he came to do! Grats Det, kudos to you. :)

Congrats Det! Takes alot of mind muscle to pull off that long of a run, and for that, I salute you!

I was thinking of taking a stab the Tour de L'Ile in Montreal this year. It's a bike ride around the island of montreal....
Any tips on preperation for the long haul?
My endurance is pretty much shot now that I'm out of high school and not in gym class or playing hockey anymore :(

Its in my reply #8 of this thread how I prepared ;)
As for the mile/km conversion  What is a km to the mile ? 1.6? That would make it 28 miles or so?

Cycling around the island of montreal? How long is that? Part of the Ironman Triathlon is a 180 km bikeride...in that league? Guess you need to get a bike that you feel comfortable with and ride at least 1 hour on two days of the week and 3 hours on the weekend. For running, the rule of thumb is that if you can run a certain amount of time/km per week, you can also run that distance in one go. So I try to run at least 3 hours a week...and occasionally 5 hours.

The pain is temporary, the pride will last a lifetime. Congratulations on a great accomplishment. There is almost nothing to compare to crossing that finish line at the end of your first Marathon. I'll surely never forget mine. The physical exhaustion leaves you open to a purely emotional reaction.

What marathon was it by the way? By the way everyone is dressed it looks like you got a nice cool day, though a bit sunny.

So now that it's been a few day, when are you gonna do your next one? LOL. Once you've been bitten by the bug, you can't stop. I've run the 'Distance' 13 times now myself.

And for us Americans, a Marathon is 26 miles 385 yards, 26.21875 miles. It use to be 26 miles, the supposed distance from the battle plain of Marathon to Athens. But the Olympics were being held in London and the king/queen wanted to see the race. So they backed it up 385 yards so it could start in front of the palace.

Hehe..nice info there..I always wondered about that odd number.

I have infact considered running another one in 6 months, but the organisers don't make it so easy for runners that take quite long. If you are in the rear of the group, you still only have like 5:30 to finish the run. This time it took me 12 minutes just to reach the starting line.

The Marathon is quite new and called "Ruhrmarathon". It was the first to cross 5 cities. Next year it will be a twin Marathon with 8 cities and 2 different starting points, merging at the goal. 40 000 ppl are expected. I will be one of them for sure :)

We really did have a nice day, temperatures between 15 and 20 Celsius. Got a slight sunburn as well. 13 marathons eh? Not sure I will ever make it there. So..do you run several a year? I really regret now that I did not start running earlier, like in my late 20ies, early 30ies.

Det, i hope you will not turn into a running maniac now, i now it's addictive. The only running i ever did was in the army and when i left there i considered my running day's over. After that i did some running from the police, but that was mostly on the bike or in a car ^^.

 you really crack me up. No way I'll become a maniac..just 2-3 days a week for an hour or two.

The funny thing is that it really helps me overcome my problem with allergic asthma and allergic hayfever. Funnily, when I run, I have no trouble breathing whatsoever and my nose is free. At home, it just contracts quickly..not even cloging up, just closing. Really weird and totally annoying.

So in that way (and losing some weight) its quite enjoyable. It also helps to run with a friend for motivation.

:(and losing some weight) .

Loosing weight? I saw the pic's from the marathon, it didnt look like you are overweight. Me, i'm 1.96 m and my weight is 10 kilo's short of being perfect, im 108kg, i'd like to be 118kg, as i was when i was young.

Well, I am 1.90 and weight 90 kilos right now..so thats not bad...but before I started running I was like 106 kg...so that certainly helped already. I am aiming for something on the low 80ies right now...by the end of the year hopefully.

Putting on 10 more kilos should be too hard, should it..just go on a Burger King Diet

Well... when you get in the low 80's, tell me, i have a necro who can allway's use an extra skelleton

And I thought I was the man while preparing for a 10k run in July...

Really, good job man. Its funny how good your body feels when it is in shape as well as the many ailments it seems to at least temporarily alleviate. For me, it helps my allergies, but also helps my bad knee (from skiing a jump I had no business on) ache and shift around less.

Again, GJ!!

Eat broccoli!! :howdy:

Hehe..I do have those stretches where i manage fairly well to just have breakfast, eat lots of fruit and then Pasta or a rice dish for Lunch..and nothing after. That can work really well for a couple of months...but then I will almost certainly lapse into a strtch where I just NEED my crisps in the evening while watching TV.

Brocolli, eh? Do you still have friend willing to be around you? Surely it must be flatulence city

I do recieve some complaints from the friends I spend the most time with... I'm able to restrain myself around the people I only spend some little time with, but the others get the whole shabang. :innocent:
