I did it! As some of you know, this weekend I wanted to run my first ever Marathon...and I actually managed to arrive.

5:30 hours later I crossed the finishing line and now I sit here with hurting muscles typing this.

But the happiness of having managed to run this distance overshines it all.

did you run the whole thing? Dont lie! J/k Det!! good job! My closes i came was like 1/3 marathon and do it every year. I dont really want to go all the way because 8 miles leaves me aching already. My feet especially takes a pounding when i run that far on pure road.

WEll good job there! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!! :winner:

Niiiiiiiiice!

I'm proud of you!

 Grats on the achievement Det.

Now, get someone to give you a thorough massage and be ready for KTA tonight. The inability to move is no excuse for not showing up. ^^

holy ...

my last and only experience as a spectator when a good friend started his 3rd marathon stays horribly in my memory.

bleeding tits of "noob" joggers wearing new shirts and new sox :D

nah i dont want to go in details now.
if u think this masorchistic sports (running from A to B) is worth this kind of pain so be it :)

congrats to your decision.
i assume this is still better than to bleed out of the ears when women start to talk instead ;) hrhr.

Thanks for all the encouraging words.

In fact it was the old story of the "midlife crisis". Guy turns 40 and notices that he is carrying more weight around than is good for him. At first I could barely run 10 minutes. After a few months I managed 2 hours at a time and decided to give it a shot at the Marathon in my area (23 000 starters).

The longest I ran in my preparation was 3:15 and I lost 16 kilos. Still it cannot prepare you for the thrill (people on the sidelines cheering you on) or the distance of the actual 42 km. Funnily it was between km 24 and 28 when it was hardest for me. After km 33, you just know that you can make it and when I was on the last 200 metres to the finishing line with both sides packed with spectators and rock music playing from a live band, I even managed a sprint.

At least I was prepared enough to tape my nipples, use Vaseline in all the tender spots and wear my good ole running shoes (now to be retired). Drink all the time and eat a banana whenever I got a chance. Coke has never tasted that good like it did when it was given out at the stands after km 30 (sugar rush).

Yeah...a great experience that is still slowly sinking in.

i'm impressed. A friend and I are hoping to train for a 1/2 marathon this summer... we'll see how that goes, then who knows? maybe next year do the whole thing. We were somewhat inspired by another friend who finished the San Fran marathon this weekend in 3:09... qualified for Boston on one of the harder courses. You've got me excited about it again :D

congrats!

wow thats slow I can do that distance in about 18 minutes, oh wait you ran it and I would drive it. j/k gj and yes I am an insanely fast driver for those who are wondering. :innocent:

Congrats DET on a job well done - I knew you could do it. Did you get sponsored by anyone, or was this just to prove a point to yourself?

Chill

Finishing something so challenging like a marathon will be with you for the rest of your life. I figure I'll follow in my Dad's footsteps by doing a few myself; he's a tank...

3 marathons
4 Cross-Canada ski marathons (placed in the top 50 on his last try)

Hopefully some of them genes will help me out when I go for it!

No sponsering, though a lot of people ran with T-Shirts that had a good cause on them (running for Aids Orphans etc).

Guess i just did it out of male stupidity to prove myself something (started to learn playing guitar the same year ;) ).

I ran with a friend of mine, who - being a girl - had more common sense and ran the Semi (half?) Marathon. She's not hurting as much right now and was home 3 hours earlier

Good Job.

However, I never did understand all you S/M types who enjoy running that far and that long.

As for me, give me a heavy barbell to lift or a stone to throw and I'm happy.

Woooo!!

Awesome, Det! This is great news and, not to mention, inspiring! I have plans to participate in half a marathon next year, just to prove the world I am able. I suppose that's about the same reason you had? :)

Very nice to hear! *hm* Maybe I should put my jogging shoes on...
