I don't know about the whole defense is useless thing. I mean, your going to die a lot more if your enemies have and 85% chance of hitting you instead of a 25% chance. Doesn't make sense to me.
Agreed, in my experience it makes a noticeable difference. Not so much on a whirler but definitely on a Frenzy barb.

I finally got an um rune and made duress. IDK about peace, i already have pretty high deadly strike and critical strike from sword mastery....the crit skill seems to be the only thing that makes having that armor on worth it, compare that to what you get from duress, a boost to all resists, CB and OW, cold damage, 20% ED and way more defense than you would get with peace.

crushing blow is overrated. sure its good when you get the bosses' life down. however with deadly strike every monster goes down fast.

It's called experience. I have 6 accounts and tons of characters. I've tested this so many times. Defense is really that overrated for pvm. It doesn't matter.

Well, i think this would be quite dependent on the class/build you are playing. If your using a bowzon, or a sorceress i would agree with you. Items that increase your damage/skills should take precedence over defense, but with those classes you shouldn't be in the fray getting hit a lot anyway. Your killing is done at a distance...in that case defense isn't that important.

BUT, for a build like a frenzy barb or a zealer, who is constantly surrounded by enemies, defense definitely HAS to make a difference. It's just math man, you cant deny it. Getting hit less often will help your survival odds greatly.

While receiving less strikes due to more defense means less that you have less of a likelihood to be interrupted or being thrown into FHR animations, this is only true regarding melee physical attacking / ranged physical attacking mobs.

A quick look at an online bestiary will show you that the greatest majority of the game mobs throughout the acts constitute of magic/elemental damage mobs, and even those who melee attack have, for the most part, a magical/elemental attack as well.

Knowing this, and taking life stealing into account, the extra defense is simply not worth relying on as it's simply not a benefit in most cases.

Also, frenzy/zealer should have lots of FHR equipment. The point is then rendered moot.

a lot of monsters but the monsters that can actually kill you are the physical damage ones. because they can have so many damage multipliers: crit, amp, auras, extra strong. elemental monsters are a joke compared to the damage physical monsters can put out

try killling stuff with a 3000 defense prudence on. then try taking it off in a fight. see what happens ;)
