mule organisation techniques

hi I'm trying to collect every set and unique item I find whilst playing on SP. (although I've lost a few items along the way through carelessly leaving them on the ground and exiting )

I was wondering, does anyone have any tips on mule management. I have one character for each set, one character for each class of uniques (eg normal axes) and one character for good rares for each class of rare item. My Single player menu is overloaded now and I waste time finding characters constantly.

Does anyone know a good method to ease the congestion lol?
