Monarch/Troll Nest Spirit questions

Ok, I know 90% of all spirits for non-pally characters get made in monarchs. But I was talking with someone (I even think he/she was from the forums) online a while ago and they said I can just make spirit in a troll nest and not dump 100 points into strength. Then someone in these forums told me troll's nest can only get 3os. So my questions are:

1. Can a troll's nest have 4os?
2. If troll's nests cannot have 4os, what would be a good low-strength shield to make a spirit in for a non-paladin character?
3. Why does everyone seem to make them in 4os monarchs? Extra defense/chance to block?

1 Troll nest can only have 3 holes
2 best low str shield that can have 4 holes is a monarch

Monarch shields are the lowest strength requirement shield for a non-pally that can have 4 sockets -- thats why it used so much....
 
Allright thanks, I went to battle.net and checked the shield stats; it's kinda surprising that a 156 str req is considered "low," but what the heck.... Allright.
 
well its not so bad considering spirit is overpowered for those cheap runes. like merick said, it helps balance the game in some way.
helps with cta also over a lidless for that extra skill. if ur sorc doesn't wear or plans on a spirit shield, then use lidless for bo.
 
A shield with +vit, +mana, ridiculous FHR, ridiculous FCR, ridiculous +skills, and resist! (from the runes itself, I just wish they would have used the runes to make it prismatic) I am quite sure people would pay for it even if it costs 1 high, so making it more balanced by having high str req is a reasonable thing.

Of course, if you are a paladin, this does not apply.

Does everyone in here hate that as much as i do? So pallys got the shield bonus of having a 4os targe. "Str req? whats that?" askes some random hammer dork who cannot afford a hoz

whats wrong with that? and fyi there are spirits out there that are worth multiple times more then a hoz.
for example:
45 base resist 35 fcr sacred targe
45 base resist 35 fcr sacred rond
etc.
 
So what can you do with a 3 socet shield? Just found a 45 all res sacred rondache, and I wonder if I can make any use of it.

I was refering to the base targe not the sacred one. I mean if he cannot afford a hoz, then how can he afford one of those. besides if they were eth then they would be worth somethin.

this is rather OT but i dont like saying someone is 'retarded'... unless they really are psychologically retarded. It is just like saying 'oh that is gay'... altho much people dont find it problem for both cases.... :sad2:

I think it's more like 100%.

That would have been me.

Next time check the Arreat Summit first thing. They got some info wrong, but the sockets are all correct.
