Minsc & Boo

Welcome to the thread paying thanks to the mighty minsc of BG fame. who along with his infalliable companion Boo, the minature giant space hamster, was always ready to plant the boot of butt-kicking for goodness to evils dirty behind and then have pancakes for breakfast (been too long since i played, cant remember the quote, i think i just mashed 2 different ones together)

anyway minsc will be a melee druid and Boo will be his bear companion, being as it seems a giant minature giant space hamster.

whenever i used minsc in BG he always went 2 handed swords and either a long bow or a crossbow. so im thinking of going with the kingslayer BB im making for my melee mancer and a dual shael'd hellrack CC

for skills im thinking of going:
20 HoW
20 Geddon
20 Synergy
5-10 Fissure(increase geddon length)
10+ dire wolf for grizzly life

gear im still unsure about, although this looks ok:

Weapon: Kingslayer
Switch: hellrack
Helm: ravenlore or Jalal's mane
Armour: Lionheart something or other
Gloves: 20% ias CB gloves, res
Boots: gore riders
Belt: nosferatu's or string
Ring1: raven frost
Ring2: dual leech +AR
Amulet: +2 druid skills, res all, mana leech

wohoo  nice!

Just a little food for thought: Minsc is a ranger, and as such do not have acces to druidic skills. He is only able to cast heal and minor cleric cantrips... I dont think armageddon is a minor cantrip though  hehe!

Iirc he was also able to summon some friends of the forest, so a summoner type build would be more true to his nature.

Other than that

I'm looking forward to his story!

Your taking Boo out of his pocket?? Thats not allowed, you can't take Boo out of his pocket, didn't you learn anything for BG.

Its too bad you couldn't build this with a paladin ranger. It would be really close to the actual Minsc and Boo characters.

I wish you luck and I suggest going with the summon skills and elemental skills but nothing advanced like armageddon, why not a fissure/firestorm build?

Haven't you guys played BG? Have you ever seen Minsc cast spells like that? ;)
Do any of you remember Minsc's intelligence score? Wasn't high enough for fissure I tell you that!

i could go for a ranger paly. but i like the idea of boo being a big bear who trudges around beside me.

also for a merc i could go with a skystrike, trangs helm n armour rogue to represent dynaheir. having a semi-powerful meteor, although dynaheir used fireball the graphics looked similar

btw the reason i chose geddon was because it is an effect skill without excessive synergies like the other fire skills and wont disrupt my butt kicking for goodness that often in battle. and we could always say my merc is casting it.. :xgrin:

No you can't. Dynaheir was a mage (albeit a lousy one) and could not wield a bow. Remember that we're playing under the old D'n'D rules :p

He had the Charm Animal skill, like all rangers.

You should MP with a sorceress, so Minsc can have his "witch" with him!

Aah, the quotes from this fellow:

"Stand and deliver, that my hamster may have a better look at you!" (his first greeting in BG 1)

"Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads. SWORDS for EVERYONE!"

"Boo likes the forest."

"Adventure, camraderie, and steel on steel. The stuff of legends! Right, Boo?"

Dynaheir: "Must you keep that rodent so close? 'Tis surely unclean."
Minsc: "I take no offense from your comment. You just don´t understand the bond I have with Boo."

"Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, watch it! I´m HUGE!"

"There is strength in numbers, and I am two or three at least."

I am a big BG 2 fan as well. I have played four different characters who all had different NPCs in their party. Minsc was in the last one ("the leftovers", sorry Minsc...). I was pleasantly surprised that Minsc adopted a new "witch": Aerie, the elven cleric/mage.

"Ahh, I understand now. You said what you did just to get me mad. Mad enough to break free! You are as smart as Boo sometimes..."

Nah I always played with a mage as a main character and they always held 2 rings of wizardry for 20+ castings of magic missle. :xsmile:

Never liked Boo for a character, I usually played 6 of my own, maybe I just liked having a bit more control of the characters I played with oh well.

Boo could cast anything he wants from scrolls or wands so using armageddon from a pelt could be considered fair game, I think.

damn i cant think of the cool one where he mentions pancakes...damn... i think its when you go into bodhi's lair in bg2.

and of course
"butt kicking for goodness"
and theres one where he got into a fight with sarevok in ToB and its was hilarious. but i forgot it.
on a bg note i normally went with 5 of my own characters and a spot left for minsc and Boo

anyway. what bout my gear? improveable?

I never did this, as I would have missed the interaction between the characters (the coolest aspect of the game IMO). On this note: for being such an important character, Imoen has surprisingly little dialogue (especially in BG 1).

Favourite happenings:

* Alora constantly trying to cheer up the grumpy Tiax and Kagain. They would have none of that. IIRC, Alora also likes Boo a lot. :-)

* The man-hating Shar-Teel (Fighter) and the very chauvinistic Eldoth (Bard) getting into a fight with each other, and I lost control over them. The 'character circles' turned purple, something I´ve not seen anywhere else in the game. It happened three times for me. Of course, I had to get the loser resurrected every time. The first time, Eldoth won with his Magic Missiles and Melf´s Acid Arrows. Second and third time, I had made Shar-Teel into a decent archer. By this time, Eldoth had some bigger spells ready, but they take a while to cast, so she simply pwned him with her arrows.

Ok.

Let's start. Disregard anything I've said ealier, cause I'm about to say it (and more) again. :)
Minsc is the big bald ranger NPC from Baldurs Gate 1. He gave appearance again in BG2 and it's expansion and is recognizable by his blue tatoo, covering part of his face. Minsc is a type of beserker fighter. He likes to kick butt for goodness, and is a good-aligned and well liked person all around. He can charm animals with his ranger abilities, heal wounds and cast other minor cleric spells. Other than that he sometimes goes rampage, while screaming to his rodent companion "go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes AAARGH!!"

Minsc is a fighter, pure and true. He has an intelligence score of 8 and a wisdom score of 6. He is therefore unable to cast arcane spells, druidic spells and cleric spells above level 3 or something. He is only able to cast simple healing, to charm animals and to fight fircely. He has great strength. Remember this when building him, you have to pump his strength alot. He is a titan.

Skills:

Imo Minsc isn't able to cast a thing, since there are no healing spells. He may cast the armor though, since he can also use armor of faith in BG. His charm animal ability can be sided with summoning. I think he should be able to summon forth bears, wolves and so on to help him in his quest. Fair enough if Boo is the bear... I don't mind hehe.

So as for skills, nothing in elemental except shield. Summoning is okay, except from spirits, since there are no such things as spirits in BG. Remember also that Minsc is NOT a bear or werewolf. He cannot transform... he is not a druid, only a ranger.

It4rmz:

Weapon: definately two handed sword. Kingslayer is fine by me.
Forbidden swords: anything ethereal, since there is no such thing as an eth weapon in BG. I'm very strict hehe!

Switch: Definately a long bow, since that is what he uses is BG. Only the long bow and the elite and exceptional versions are allowed.

Rest of the gear doesn't really matter. Imo you can use what you want, except perhaps the helmet, since I don't think he should be wearing a druid pelt. Such things doesn't exist in the BG world...

Fighting:

Remember always to thrust yourself in headfirst in battle while yelling your battleroar. Minsc deals heavy damage and is not afraid of any peril...

Have fun with the build. It's a great idea!
I'm probably join in, building some other BG character.

-rizzo

Edit: Remember!! This build should not be a cookie cutter or anything alike, but to have fun and try something completely different. Don't do anything you wouldn't have done in BG.

"yes! lead evil by example, and one day we no longer put the boots to those that stray off the path
of goodness and into the muck and bile of villainy and track great muddy footprints across our lily
white tiles! Boo will have clean wood shavings you evil bastards!"

"aaahhh night time! good for sneaking up on evil"

"Butt kicking for goodness"

"Boo agrees! You are welcome beside us if you effectively apply the boots of goodness"

"A fine choice of Mentor, but again, you do not seem like a 'Sarevok' to me. too much 'humble'
not enough 'RAAAAGH, Feel my unholy rage"

"We will charge into the midst of the den of thieves and fling them about like pancakes!
all that is glory shall be ours! and then breakfast."

now that thats out of my system.

i always used an xbow on minsc as another character normally had a long bow and i hated doubling up on wpn types. so i will probably stick with hellrack, but then again maybe not.
another good sword choice couid be passion. berzerk and zeal. will think bout it. although i like the idea of minsc taking vengeance on those that slew dynaheir.
btw the skill restrictins u imposed rizzo would basically mean 20 dire wolf, 20 grizzly and 20 cyclone armor n the rest in cyclone synergies. which isnt a bad idea.hmmmm. id still like to go with geddon but i might skip it to keep the theme.hmmm....
on the matter of druid pelts, its a gnoll pelt from the chieftain that imprisoned dynaheir :xsmile4:

Well, with the go for the eyes comment you could have 20 points in ravens as well. I did this once and it actually helps your char quite a bit. Admittedly i was forced by a tournament, but still found it quite usefull.

And, a gnoll is close enpugh to animal that i'd allow animal pelts. Personal preference though.

lets see. what type of merc and who should they be? im thinking no act 2 merc as bg doesn't have auras

OK, does anyone remember the line Minsc says when he wants to rest? Something about getting a bad case of "armor chafe"

corax said:

Yeah. I was thinking a act 1 merc... imoen anyone?
That or a barbarian, since many spells thrown by act 3 mercs are invalid in BG format. Many spells cast by monsters are invalid too tho.. hmmm

i think ill go with the act 1 merc, she can be the person who minsc has chosen to guard now. instead of stupid aerie
in that case, good bow suggestions?
