The two points into Double Throw was a miss-click, I only meant to put one as it only adds AR. When I re-spec him I will probably put more into BO as the extra Frenzy damage from pumping Taunt further isn't that great.

I put a few points in leap to fit in with the theme (the Predator jumping into trees etc.) Useful in the AS and the A3 to leap over the gaps.

With the exception of the HF drop, finds were pretty poor, but then I am a bit more exacting about what I call a decent find these days.



How does he look?
Let's break it down:

Ranged Attack
I read somewhere once that if you put a Javelin in the glove hand and an axe in the off hand, the range of the axe gets matched to the Javelin. Not sure if it works or not, but I liked the combination of elemental damage, leech and Amp, so I went with it anyway. The javelin also matches the theme well as they are often shown with a spear type weapon. (Un)fortunately there are now shoulder mounted laser cannons in D2. You have to play D3 to get weapons like that :p

In practice the combination worked well, quickly breaking down groups of monsters, especially when Amp triggered. The biggest trouble with the throw side is the small stack size of the weapons. You quickly get through them, I don't think the replenish rate would save you several town trips, even if you had the same weapon setup on both switches.

Melee Attack
They are normally shown with a claw or dagger type melee weapon. Now claws are obviously not available to a Barbarian so, drawing inspiration from Nightfish's WW Barb, I went with 2x Fleshripper. Obviously there is no mastery for daggers, so I didn't need to worry about finding the extra points to pump a second mastery. I never got around to socketing them as I couldn't decide what the best option was. I may stick Ruby Jewels in them at some point in time, but this switch was mainly about crushing blown (50% total) for bosses, not pure damage.

This worked really nicely with the throw switch. You come across a pack and let loose a volley of axes and javelins. This shreds most of pack and normally triggers Amplify Damage. You then switch to the Fleshrippers and finish off any remaining opponents. The limitations of the stack size on the throw switch meant that both attacks were used equally, something that I really liked about the character.

Cloaking
Obviously Treachery provided the cloaking in the form of Fade. The trouble was that when you attack as a ranged character you don't get hit and, once the packs had been softened up, I didn't get hit enough to cast Fade much either. Fortitude would have been a better choice, but I wouldn't have had my cloaking then.

The Helmet
For a Bone Helm class helmet for a thrower, there is one obvious choice - Giant Skull. The knockback is obvious awesome with a ranged attack, but I was worried how it would work with Frenzy. Actually it wasn't a problem at all, the FRW boost from Frenzy means that you quickly close up any distance from knockback and keep attacking. The look fits the theme extremely well, and the Crushing Blow and strength boost all help. I socketed it with 2x Ruby Jewels to compensate a little for not using Fortitude. If I went for Fortitude I would use two resistance jewels / Um runes instead.


The game played through pretty much according to plan. I played A1 to A3 at /players5, dropping to /players3 in A4. I only dropped to /players1 for The Ancients. Amp took care of just about all PI problems. I had a few deaths, mainly when I got careless, as I decided to pump Dexterity for damage. I would probably have been better off putting a bit more into life.

My biggest problem was keeping the merc alive actually. I got to The Throne of Destruction and ran out of money. I decided not to S&E to mule on gold, so I had to go back and pick up a few items to sell. I managed enough for two merc revives, but I ran out again mid way through The Minions of Destruction. So I had to take on Lister and Baal alone with Frenzy, but it wasn't too much of a problem.

Overall a great character to play, lots of fun.




Retirement Plans
He is going to be re-specced to be my new Trav runner for a bit, at least until level 92. Depending on how lucky he is, he may keep on beyond that.

Running Travincal for runes, like all running, can be very unrewarding at times, so I like to get a bit of motivation by seeing that XP bar moving. Nothing to report really whilst questing.

Since making Patriarch I have re-specced him to a WW Barb and run him up to level 92 in Travincal (about 1000 runs). Rune drops were not good - only a Mal and 2x Ist, making him my worst Barb to date. Charm finds were good though with a Chilling GC of Vita (39), 3/20 Fine SC of Balance , 5% Shimmering SC, plain / minor mod Burning, Chilling, Harpoonists, Preservers, Sparking, Sounding, Trainers skillers, a Fine SC of Vita (2/11/17) and a Steel of Vita (31/18).

Random Thoughts
For general questing this was a good build and very safe. I think everything that isn't a boss gets stunned, including Lister & co. I used Lawbringer on switch with a Spirit Monarch, which took care of the bulk of PI monsters like ghosts. I wash't sure if it would work, but I can confirm it does. I had 65FCR on this switch, the biggest problem is that the Sanctuary aura can knock them out of the range of War Cry, so you have to herd them in sometimes. Non undead PIs got stunned with War Cry, Battle Cry to reduce their defence and then I swung Lawbringer until Decrepify triggered. Then bad to War Cry to do the damage. Slow, but it worked.

Phase Blade would have been a better idea if I had the dexterity, but I didn't. Most of my characters I plan down to the skill point (PvP habit) but this one I just played and tried as I went. It was quite nice way to play, especially as the singer is so safe it doesn't really matter if you have a bit too much strength or something.

So the big problem with this build is the act bosses. They take forever to kill, even at /players1. I was thinking about trying to equip a Stormlash or something, but getting the AR would mean too many gear swaps. In the end I just held down the RMB and got on with it. I was most worried about The Ancients but in then end they were fairly easy. Diablo was tricky but I just stood there and chugged big purples. Baal was extremely annoying with his mana burn attack and took ages to kill.

Retirement Plans
I have now re-specced him back to a singer, I plan to use him as an LK runner, if I decide to run there again.

Ursula is a Werebear Assassin, most definitely not an Ursa Major. You are not going to see any Jeweler's Talons of Quickness here. I have tried 4FPA with crushing blow before and wasn't a fan. I'm not interested in pecking every monster at 3FPA with minimal physical damage and high crushing blow. I want to hit stuff with high physical damage and lashings of deadly strike. Bears should kill Fallen with one swat of their mighty paws, not tickle them to death.

Finds
Finds brought a new low in quality. Hellforge dropped an Io. I don't think I picked up anything other than a few crafting runes and some perfect gems all the way through. Still, finds is not what this build is about.


Thoughts
This is my second she-bear. Illian, my Amazon Bear and in many ways there were similarities. Both used normal attack with the same weapon and a heavy reliance on passive skills. Both have a summonable minion to support. So I thought I would do a comparison between the two:

Offense
Illian manages 4773-10K damage at 6FPA with 11283 AR and 65% Critical Strike. So she just edges it on CS/DS and damage, but the AR is almost double Ursula's. Illian is also Titan build, if I had gone the same way for Ursula I think the base damage numbers would have been more similar. Ursula benefited from the Damage to Demon on Laying of hands, I probably could have gone this way too for Illian. LoH and eBoTD is an awesome combination. The 350% ED to Demons coupled with the 200% ED to Undead means a serious damage boost to about 75% of the monsters in the game. I played all of Hell at /players5 and most stuff was still going down in only a couple of hits. Blade Shield was mostly for decoration. The duration of this is really annoying, why a skill with relatively low damage has to be re-cast every two minutes I don't know. Venom didn't really add much as it's damage is too low without serious amounts of +skills, but there wasn't really anywhere else that I needed to spend the points.

Defence
Both bears have similar resists, but Illian has more lightning resists thanks to T-Gods. But neither really has a resists problem. Illian managed 2179 Life even with a Battle Orders boost from a beta CtA, I decided not to use CtA for Ursula, mainly because I couldn't be bothered with all the swapping of weapons when pre-buffing. Then it comes down to Dodge/Avoid/Evade vs Fade. Mostly Fade helps with the resists, but I also got 21% Damage Reduction from it.

So up to this point it looks like Illian has the edge. But it is the rest of the team that makes the difference.

Minion
A high level Valkyrie is an awesome tank. But other than that she doesn't do much. Just wanders around slowly, prodding at stuff with her pike. A high level Shadow Master is much more fragile, but much more useful. One of the things that put me off this build initially was the fact that it basically removes the Assassins trinity of crowd control skills - CoS, DS and MB. Normally I don't use a shadow on my assassins, but the MB from the Shadow Master was useful. I didn't put any points in MB to try to make her use it less and put 3 into DS to try to get her to use it more. Not sure if it made any difference though.

Mercenary
Illian used an Act 1 merc with Faith. Whilst this gained her AR, one FPA and some damage, she didn't really add that much. Ursula had all the attack speed covered by her gear, so I could go with the more traditional side-kick for melee characters - Act 2 Might merc with The Reaper's Toll. I hadn't quested with a Decrepify merc for quite some time and forgot how awesome it is. Huge damage boost, slowed, less damaging enemies. Ursula ripped through packs of decrepified monsters. I used this as my PI solution too. Tackling stacked ghosts at /p5 could be a bit slow, but it was doable.

Overall
Ursula edges it thanks to her better support team. I think that the Amazon has inherently better skills for a bear - Penetrate, Critical Strike, D/A/E. You could probably tweak an Amazon's gear to use a Reaper's Merc, then the zon would come out on top. But the way I played them, Ursula gets my vote. Some people may say I am biased in favour of the assassin...


What Next?
Ursula makes it 19 assassins, one more to go. I have all the equipment I need for her now, I'll start hell with her in the next few days.
 
Ever since reading Blade Fury Analysis by Ceramic Weasel I have wanted to revisit the skill. I wanted to try and squeeze as much effective damage out of the skill as possible, so this meant waiting for a few runes to drop to complete. Mitsuko is named after one of the protagonists in the film Battle Royale. I wanted to give her a sickle to keep in with the theme of the film. My original thought was for a Crescent Moon military pick, but I was disappointed to find out that that looks like a hammer in game. So in the end she got a supersized sickle on switch, in the form of a Thresher.

Thoughts
It took alot of playing around with equipment to balance this character. The Cleglaw's combo went a long way to addressing the usual AR problems of Blade Fury Assassins. I wanted to get over 5K AR, unfortunately Cleglaw's and enchant wasn't enough on it's own, I needed more AR from the inventory. This meant sacrificing any 1.07 max damage charms to further boost my damage. I decided to go with a claw and use claw mastery before I rolled the Chaos. Unfortunately the damage roll wasn't great, but I stuck with it. Ethereal Death Ettin Axe may have been a better choice, but I liked the idea of using the claw. Besides, all the ctc effects from Chaos looked pretty. With Pride and Andariel's Visage on the merc, it wasn't uncommon to have multiple firewalls, poison novae and frozen orbs on the screen at the same time, with a few charged bolts thrown in too. Capturing them on a screenshot was a bit more tricky though, as I throw blades by running around with LMB held down and pressing shift to throw blades. Pressing screenshot at the same time requires a third hand.

I went with the Pride mercenary to further boost my damage. I also considered Reapers and Infinity (for the AR). The reason that I chose Pride was that Decrepify from Reapers only acts over a small radius around the mercenary. Concentration is present wherever I target. I offset the lack of decrepify with ctc amplify damage on Atma's and the slow from the Claglaw pooncers and Nosferatu's Coil.

Damage wise it worked pretty well, but I wasn't very impressed with the merc's survivability. Initially I had him in Treachery and Tal's Mask, but that was just terrible. The lack of on weapon damage from Pride meant that he didn't leech enough. Changing to Fortitude helped. I played A1 to A3 at /players5 and he died quite a bit. By A4 I was reviving him all the time, so I dropped to /players3. That helped somewhat, but it wasn't until he reached level 83 and I could equip Andariel's Visage that things really improved to an acceptable level.

Damage
These numbers are just the physical part, Venom, Enchant and any Elemental damage has been ignored. I guess it adds about another 700 damage after the 3/4 Blade Fury penalty with Chaos, half that for Obedience obviously.

I think that's fairly respectable damage at 6FPA ranged. The damage output from Obedience was very respectable. Two handers are almost never recommended for BF due to the 3/8 damage penalty, but I think an ethereal Obedience is a pretty decent choice.

I'm not really sure why I went with Venom, it didn't really add much, especially after the 3/4 Blade fury penalty. She would have been a more rounded character if I had put the points into Death Sentry instead, especially if I went with Infinity to solve the AR and boosted damage with trap skillers too. I put points into Dragon Talon as a 90% crushing blow boss killer with Obedience. This worked pretty well, but I only used it a handful of times, it was by no means essential.


What Next?
What game time I have has been dedicated to D3 since I finished this character, but I'm not sure how long that will hold me. I want to get at least one character to level 60, but I don't see D3 having the same replay value as D2. I'm also not sure that I can go through the same quests another three times. The gameplay is too linear and the itemisation is so terrible at the moment that MF runs seem almost pointless beyond what you need to complete the game. The nice affixes that have made this character what she is - ctc Amp, Auras etc - don't seem to exist in D3 as far as I can see at the moment. I have only just finished normal thought, but from what I have read it doesn't improve much. The more I play D3 the more it feels like Final Fantasy rather than Diablo.

So D3 is likely to be sharing time with D2 over the next few months. Some PvP this week, then some more grailling (RW and S/U) and some more two handed and themed characters.

That's my 20th Assassin done, I'll do a write up for the whole set soon. Is she my last one? Maybe. I have a vague idea for another build, we'll have to see.

Finds were quite frankly appalling. Up until A5 I hadn't seen anything even halfway decent. Not even a charm or Jewel worth picking up, let alone a rune. There was one high point as I found an Executioner's Justice in Crystalline Passage. Not a grailler, but a TC87 with 0% MF is pretty unusual.

Thoughts
I have done a rift kicker before, but she was a PvP character so has since had her gear stripped. This time I focused on optimising the Orb damage with Nightwing's, Facets and Conviction, as laid out in Master Zap's Guide. Rather than using traps as a backup, I decided to go for a Lawbringer + Dragon Tail switch instead, to keep the character as a pure kicker.

I played through Hell at /players3 and she pretty much ripped through Act 1. Multiple frozen orbs with conviction were tearing through everything not CI. I rarely used the DTail switch at this point, Venom, OW, Rift's elemental damage and 40% Crushing Blow was enough to take out occasional CIs on its own. I deliberately kept my Dragon Talon below level 24 as I feel that four kicks is plenty for general questing.

Act 2 was also cleared swiftly, the area knockback from Dragon Tail and the Sanctuary aura was used to give me space in the tombs. I was starting to find the low blocking of Head Hunters Glory a bit problematic, especially when surrounded by huge mobs of flayers in A3. Around this time I put a few more points into Dragon Talon so that I could drop the crafted gloves and use Dracul's Grasp if I wanted. This weakened by TS/DTail switch from level 26 to level 24, but with Lawbringer and Conviction it was still plenty strong enough at /players3. In fact, when on a few occasions the merc died and I carried on kicking, it still killed well.

By the time I got to Act 4, I was starting to feel that Frozen Orb was losing its effectiveness. It was still damaging, but it often took a few orbs to kill stuff, or even just to soften them up. Dragon Tail wasn't really used except for knockback due to the high number of Fire Immunes. Clearing the Chaos Sanctuary was slow going. The merc decided to die very quickly when confronting Diablo, leaving me to face him alone. Dracul's came in useful for this fight and I just kept kicking him with my remaining 30% crushing blow. It took a bit of time, but eventually he was dispatched.

The high number of cold immunes in A5 meant that I used Dragon Tail for the majority of the time. Waheed actually managed to keep himself alive for the entire Ancients fight. I had a few problems with a Black Soul boss pack in The Throne of Destruction, but once cleared the minion waves gave me little problems. CoS pretty much immobilises the Venom Lords. I separated the Minions of Destruction so that I didn't get pinballed by them then crushing blow cut them down to size. I stayed at p3 for Baal, kept kicking away with DT and eventually my 18th assassin made Matriarch.

After the big promise of A1, I felt the build lost its teeth a bit in later stages. On balance I don't think it is as powerful as a normal Dragon Talon kicker with loaded crushing blow. Certainly a kicker with Stormlash is much more powerful. I also missed my Stormshield defensively. I don't think that it is as strong as Dragon Tail either. It was a fun build to play and I would recommend it. Maybe going with traps may have made it better balanced, I'm not sure. I think if I did it again, using Rift as a backup for DTail may be a better bet. But then Stormlash and Stormshield would be better still...

Some shopping, Trav runs and LK runs at the moment. After that the last two - Blade Fury and a Bearsin.
 
PvPaladins - A Triple Pat thread

Way back in 1.12, I made some Paladins for PvP. Back then I didn't have Enigma and the Paladin was a good choice as I could get the required mobility by charging. Originally there was a Vindicator/Templar, but I messed up the skill points on him so he became a pure smiter. I then made another V/T and then decided to make a T/V. It was all getting a bit messy with too many smite based characters. Plus they were a pain to level.

Eventually I got Enigma and these three got sidelined for other more interesting builds. With the arrival of re-specs in 1.13 I got to re-adjust the misshapen builds and better distribute the build types.

Levelling was easier too. I used my free skill reset to level all of them up to 92 as Hammerdins in The Pits, then re-specced them again to their PvP builds, all for the cost of three tokens. They made Patriarch at various points over the last couple of years, but I only completed them recently.

I'm not guaranteeing that you will see all of these regularly on The Blood Moor. I have about 22 PvP characters, which is far more than I actually have time to play, or wealth to invest to bring them all up to a decent level.


Inigo_Montoya

Tele Smiter

Six fingered men beware! I know there is already an Avenger (much better build for the name) on the Forum, but I had this character in Hell before that was posted. He is a pretty standard Tele Smiter, built pretty much following Camden's guide in the PvP forum. He uses a Grief Berserker Axe and Crown of Ages. If I ever have two spare Bers to drop into a CoA I can probably swap to a Phase Blade setup.

He made a brief appearance on day 1 of PvP Week 8. I struggled with the hotkeys a bit, but managed to get a few decent kills anyway. If only Paladins could have auras on the left mouse button, the whole thing would be much easier. Some practice is required, but I think you will see him again.

Ramirez

Ramirez' name is also lifted from a film linked to one of my other PvP characters, this time it is the character played by Sean Connery in Highlander. But any similarity ends there. I kind of like the connection between Ramirez and ramming my opponents, so he is built as a charger.

I decided to use Fanaticism as my main aura for damage, but more importantly AR boost. He has a point in conviction for team play and a point in Salvation for over stacking resists. This was particularly useful in PvP week, as Pyro's lightning sorc found out. Even with conviction from the Infinity scythe she was holding the lightning did little damage. And the disadvantage of holding that conviction stick - no block. One swift hit and it was goodnight Pyro. I only played him for a short time in PvP week, but he was a lot of fun. Not a character to play all night, but for coming in, causing a bit of chaos for a bit, I was very happy with the build.

For those not familiar with PvP Paladin terminology, a Vindicator is a Smiter and a Templar uses Fist of the Heavens with Conviction. Put them together and you have a Templar / Vindicator if you have a stronger FoH, or a Vindicator / Templar if you have a stronger Smite. After my multitude of smiters described earlier I decided to go for a T/V. I can always farm some more tokens if I change my mind.

This character was one of those who didn't make it onto The Moor during PvP week. There was a strong showing of T/Vs and V/Ts, with treno, Pyro and omg all playing them to good effect. Mine needs some improvement in skillers and maybe some gear adjustment before he is completely ready, but maybe I will give him a try in the not too distant future. I kind of wanted to practice playing a pure smiter first, before adding in the extra complication of FoH.

No prizes for guessing where the name comes from, especially for those who already know I have a PvP Assassin called Trinity. It also is the name for the Greek god of dreams, which to me somehow seems appropriate for a character using conviction. I actually have another Paladin I am going to use for running The Pits for a bit. He is planned to be converted to a PvP character when I am done. His name is Smith.

Matriarch Atalanta, PvP Bowazon

Atalanta is my PvP Bowazon. She has benefited greatly from two extremely generous giveaways - A Faith Ward Bow from Neksja and a Fortitude Archon Plate from RibGriller. Hopefully this mat thread goes some way towards expressing my thanks to you both for these fantastic items.

This is not strictly a themed build, as when I normally do themed builds I plan the skills around the character. On this character, the name was chosen to fit the build. Atalanta is a character from Greek Mythology. According to the legend, she was abandoned as a baby and raised by a she-bear and a hunter. She grew into a great hunter and was an extremely fast runner - faster than any man. She drew first blood, and therefore was awarded the hide, in the Hunt for the Calydonian Boar. To win her hand in marriage, suitors had to beat her in a running race. Death was the prize for second place. Eventually she is beaten by Melanion, who dropped three golden apples to slow her down. The Wikipedia page has more of the story and this is quite a nice page with the story & pictures.

So Atalanta is a fast runner with bow and javelin skills - which fits in with TienJe's PvP Hybrid Bowazon build very nicely.

Random Thoughts
Originally I was going to use Treachery for the Armour and Windforce for the bow. The Faith that Neksja gave me means I needed less IAS in my gear - 65IAS for a 7FPA Multishot / Guided Arrow. This allows me to use the Fortitude that RibGriller gave me to hugely boost my damage output. Both items work beautifully together. P8 pit runs are fairly quick, I haven't tried her at other targets yet.

The switch is worth a quick note, mainly because I think it has a good application for any bowazon. TienJe's build has an Ethereal Upped Titan's revenge on switch, with one point in Jab and Lightning Bolt. I found this was extremely useful for PvM, taking out PI monsters fairly quickly. Ghost packs could be slow at times, but definitely do-able at /P3. If you have the Titan's, this is a PI solution at the investment of only 3 points. I didn't use the Jab much, but it was useful for Duriel - I could sit behind the Stormshield and Jab away, saving me the pain of having to run around the small room firing guided arrows. I tried it against the ancients, but my low AR made my chance to hit pretty appalling. So for that battle it was cast valk / decoy, run & fire. They went down on the first attempt.

Strafe vs Multishot
I have built a strafer before (Gisele), and was curious to see how the builds would compare. Both skills have their merits, but I prefer strafe for PvM. The auto targeting makes a lot of difference. Strafe lock rarely comes into play as most things are dead before they get close enough. Not to say Multishot isn't a good skill, but the 3/4 damage penalty and huge mana drain are a bit of a pain.

Random Thoughts
Just a standard bonemancer really. There were no problems really with any part of the game. Magic Immunes were either parked or taken care of with Corpse Explosion. He wasn't a bad character, he just wasn't really that inspiring. Bone spear is fairly powerful, but nothing like as powerful as a sorc or LF zon. Playing the game through was always comfortable at low players setting with a decent Corpse Explosion as backup.


What Next?
Yet another Assassin is in progress, she is a PvP BoS kicker but I haven't entirely decided what route she will take. I also have a couple more PvP paladins on the go. Maybe I'll have another go at some kind of ES sorc as well. I got one to A3 Hell but borked the stat points so now she is a nice LK runner.

PvM wise I am working on a themed Melee / Revivomancer with a Faith mercenary and a PDR berserker. It may turn into a Faith sept, but we will see. I also have a LF zon in A1 Hell who I really should get on and Mat.
