Every time I start over, I choose this build for MF-ing purposes. Frozen Orb is very easy to use, you don't really have to aim it, unless you want to, but when you do it kills quite fast. Usually, I max Meteor instead of Ice Bolt, but I never really use it (don't like it), so this time I went with Ice Bolt to make FO stronger.

Questing:
Normal:
This girl was heavily twinked from the start (with MF gear of course). She cleared out the Den of Evil with her inventory full of throwing knives. By the time she reached Tristram she already had 190% MF on her:
Arctic Gloves+Belt= 40% - I only took these off after NM Andy dropped the Goldwrap and a pair of 25% Cold Res/20%MF gloves
2xAngelic Rings+Amulet(+Sword)= 100%MF - Actually killed things with the sword in Act 1.
Sigon's Helm+Armor+Boots+Shield=50%MF - When she hit lvl 18 I switched the helm and the armor to a 3PTopazed Great Helm and a 4PTopazed Gothic Plate (kept the shield and the boots though).
The heavy magic finding gear has resulted in this 😉. By the way, she went through on Normal at /players8.

Nightmare:
/players8 too. I think I already maxed FO before act 2 (maybe even earlier, can't remember), so you can imagine what happened here. I went through on Act1 in no time due to good maps: 1 , 2 , 3
Nothing really interesting happened in Nightmare except that I've found another TC3 :)

Hell:
As I've entered Hell, I thought I will need more power, so I took off the Angelic stuff, made the Spirits (found the Monarch with my Fishy earlier) and put them on (as well as the Nagels). With these I hit the 63% breakpoint which allowed me to Teleport faster. I was such fast, I could Teleport even into walls :cool:. However this often careless Teleporting with only MF gear equipped caused me two quick deaths. This made me change my gear again, so I put on the Vipermagi, the Tarnhelm and the weapon switch which together with the aura from the merc grants me 2k+ defense. My MF dropped a bit, but the quality of the finds remained the same :).
I marched through the Acts but apparently, I wasn't fast enough. Mephisto went down easily, but as you can see my merc was quite tired at that time, so he went down easily too. Act 4 was fast except the City of the Damned which spawned Souls. Act 5 was quite hard though, there was 2 memorable fights. The first one was in the Frozen River. These guys (but especially the highlighted one) killed me approximately 251,478,679 times. It was two bosspacks iirc, because I could only kill one of them with Fire Ball as he was cold immune. Eventually, I managed to separate them and cast Frozen Orb from behind a wall, so only 1 shard hit them/cast, but slowly they went down. Every time I tried to cast a Frozen Orb against the bosses, they one-hit killed me (couldn't Teleport away), so I had to lure them away to retrieve my body and use Fire Ball instead. All in all, it was an agonizing fight (20+ minutes long). As it was the battle with The Ancients.
I can't remember which mods they have spawned with. This is mainly because they have killed me at least 5 times and also I had to reroll them a lot. Sometimes because of they killed the merc, sometimes they were dual-immune (sometimes both). So I can imagine they have spawned with every possible mods they could, but eventually we bested them. Compared to them, Baal was quite easy (as you can see it in my potion supplies), his drops were usual.

After I finished her, I started to do some runs, let me post those results as well:
~100 Hell Countess run: - Pul, Um, Hellslayer, Mal, Boneflame
~60 Andy run: this was the best drop, also Bonehew (TC60), 2xJade Talon in the same run (TC63), Rixot's Keen (TC3), Griswold's Heart (TC66)
50 AT run: here, the first 10 run netted me MY BEST DROP EVER, an Um and a Pul. In the next 40 I found only a 15% AllResist/10FCR ring.
After these I started to run Mephisto for a Shako. Did ~480 runs on this map, but before one of the runs I unfortunately clicked on Nightmare instead of Hell. Result:

Comments:

My first Mat/Pat since my enforced restart last year (due to a HDD failure). Originally intended to be a pure Blizzsorc for AT running purposes, I quickly realised that with sub-par gear I was going to get awfully frustrated in Hell, so I respecced to add Fireball as a backup. I'm convinced this build would pwn with top-notch gear, and would make a versatile MFer. I think I will be doing another respec to pure Blizz, as I want gear and want it quick, so AT is the way to go. She quested with 130% MF after I found the Shako (from a rack in LK), but didn't find anything too exciting. Lots of normal and exceptional uniques and sets to get my intended self-found grail underway.

The two items I wanted were a 4os Monarch (or a plain one to take to Larzuk), and a 4os Elite Polearm to upgrade the moron's weapon and make him more durable. I found plenty of blue Monarchs, but never a white or grey one. And I found 2 4os Colossus Volgue's - which have a 211 Str req, meaning maximum frustration (moron's strength is currently 188). Bloody game still knows how to not deliver what you want.

I died a number of times, mainly due to teleporting when I meant ot Blizzard or vice-versa. The worst was a Frenzytaur stair trap at the entrance of the Crystalline Passage. I died again luring the bastards away from the entrance so I could retrieve my body.

The worst area in the game was WSK 1. Every single monster was cold immune. Bloody glad I did that respec. AT this point, allow me to interrupt myself:

Rant warning!
I HATE immunities. In a game where the sole object is to kill monsters, to have monsters which are unkillable by my character seems bloody ridiculous and yet another example of poor game design by Blizzard. Of course, the real issue is the existence of skills which lower resistances (Cold Mastery, Lower Resist, Conviction, Amplify Damage, and the - Enemy Resists mod on some items), necessitating immunities to prevent some characters from being able to slaughter everything indiscriminately. If the goal is to have all characters be strong against some monsters but weak against others, then get rid of resistance lowering abilities, put a cap on monster resists of 90 or 95 (like the player), and et voila. Every character will slaughter some monsters and struggle against others, but will be able to still kill everything, however slowly. Hybrids will be able to kill most monsters reasonably well, but won't dominate anything. This should be doubly the case in 1.10+ where the existence of synergies encourages power builds that focus on one particular skill.

Overall, a mostly fun character that would have been much more fun with the right gear. Someone has to go first though, and Liza drew the short straw. Now onto the ATs (and probably a bit of LK on the side)to find some nice gear for all my other characters.

I just started this build a week or two ago. I'm surprised at how fast I managed to complete it, especially since this was my first ever sorceress! I went straight from playing tank paladins to playing a sorc and the adjustment was fairly easy to make, actually.

The biggest problem area was levels 62 to 68. 80 to 82 were also difficult. I dinged 85 when I killed the Hell Ancients and then went in to tackle Baal. Didn't die once in the WSK, I expected to die many times!

Baal dropped the 100% meteor/death rainbow facet. Never gotten one of those before, so that's pretty awesome.

Is 85 high, low or normal when killing Hell Baal for the first time? I have been curious as to whether I went through the game overleveled or underleveled.

Funnily enough, today is my birthday, so, beating Diablo II on Hell mode for the first time is totally my birthday present to myself. XD

By the way, thanks to everyone who has posted various really helpful information on these forums. I was able to play this sorceress effectively because of many of the things I've read on here and at the Summit.

Now to magic-find my BRAINS OUT.

After finishing up my “three sons” project, I immediately worked to complete a long-in-planning LK runner. This character has no purpose in life other than to run LK and was designed as such. Admittedly, almost any teleporting character can easily and safely run LK, but I wanted a dedicated runner to maximize efficiency. It’s surely not the absolute best build possible, but it has proven very effective in limited testing. With that in mind, my main goals for this character were as follows (rationales in parentheses):

· 105% FCR (fast teleporting!)
· 1000+ life (can take lots of hits, hit recovery doesn’t trigger too often)
· 500+ mana (Insight-fuelled teleporting without ever running low)
· 42%+ FHR (9 frames – all melee-based mobs in LK)
· 75% block (all physical damage-based mobs in LK)
· Good block speed
· 50%+ resist all (not real important in LK)
· CBF (being chilled really slows things down)
· FRW: some (most movement is by TP or TK and can have Harmony on Switch)
· No charms (empty inventory except for keys, for minimal time spent at the stash / in ATMA)

One thing I did not include is % damage reduction. Surely a Stormshield-based build would be at least as effective as this build, but I only have one SS and the current equipment allowed me to invest much less Str and Dex than 75% blocking with SS would have required, so I probably would have lost out on ~200 life.

I really only needed level 88 for the desired skills, but my amulet had a required level of 89 so the last point was dropped into Frozen Armor (not that I ever use it). I went with a Blizzballer because it’s versatile and has sufficient killing power with few +skill items in the event that I need to clear out some riffraff to safely get to some goodies. I went with Ice Blast over Glacial Spike because I wanted a direct cold attack that actually does some damage, and Glacial Spike’s freeze length is still plenty good for crowd control and escape with the Blizzard synergy.

Musings:

This character started a while back and was parked for a long time while I made my 3 recent pats. After picking her back up again I blitzed through the game, doing all quests and grabbing necessary waypoints. I’ve played lots of sorcs before, no need to experience her tactical abilities in every dungeon this time around. Just wanted to get her up and running quickly. I played through as a Blizzballer, questing through Normal and Nightmare at /players8 and Hell at /players3. Once reaching Pindle (at level ~83), I set the game to /players5, packed on some extra MF, and went to town until I was 40M XP short of level 89, at which point I killed the Ancients and Matted her. I got 2 or 3 real nasty rolls on the Ancients at first, and this is not a power character so I kept rerolling until they were pretty tame. The only death I remember was in Hell WSK when I teleported right into a big pack of gloams, who insta-fried me. As an aside, I have noticed that The City of the Damned has some of the most unique landscape features; this is yet another that I hadn’t noticed before. It’s like a mini-fortress.

Finds were relatively sparce due to the fast playstyle, but I still had a few good ones. I found two pairs of decent rare res/MF boots, and these gloves look good for a MF javazon that doesn’t need IAS from the gloves slot. As for runes, Hellforges were Um in NM and Pul in Hell, while I found a Mal on the Frozen Tundra in NM and an Um while running the Countess to get to level 80 (not from the Countess herself, of course :rolleyes:). Firelizard's Talons also dropped while visiting the Countess. The most exciting find for me was Homunculus shortly after leaving the Countess, as I've always seen that as such a nice shield and yet had never found it in all my years playing. Unfortunately not much else of note dropped until I began running Pindle. I did make sure to be very selective about what waypoints I grabbed in Act 3 to minimize future mis-clicks. Like a pro.

While running Pindle, I picked up a couple of goodies including Griswold’s Valor (just leaving me a Caddy short of completing the set), Tomb Reaver (2 sockets), this nice rare ring, a very useful utility Necro head, and of course the most anticlimactic drop Pindle can provide (bastard). At least that and Griswold’s Valor were grailers for me.

Finally, the journey was nearly complete. Time to roll some maps! I settled in and was prepared to be patient to find a nice, tight, circular map. Turned out that I only needed to reroll twice before getting this beauty. You can even see the first hut from the WP! I suspect that I could easily spend another hour+ and not find anything better, so I’m sticking with this. Mobs almost never spawn within huts, and it also has about 8 poppables directly along the route that I tend to hit as well, as I’m looking for jewels, gems, and charms in addition to runes. I haven’t found any HRs yet but I’m probably only ~100-150 runs in so far. I have found some nice items already though, including a 32/15 Ruby Jewel of Carnage, a racked 50% Fire Res Aldur’s Advance, a 39% Ruby Jewel, a Fletcher’s skiller, and a Sparking Skiller of Life. Not to mention tons of low runes and ~50+ pgems. Not bad for so few runs!

And with that, a second pat/mat fairly quickly after my last one, thanks to the holiday break (even if renovating my bathroom and managing sick children took up 90% of my time the past 2 weeks). What are people’s opinions about my LK map? As mentioned, I think it’s quite good but if anyone thinks otherwise let me know! What about my overall character design and the theory behind her as a dedicated runner? Always nice to hear differing opinions on such things.

Today i've finished my first mat, Helena a level 87 MeteOrb sorceress.

I was focused on MF runs the last days. First pits, then Meph. She wears
currently full Tal's set (with 2 PTopazes) and has ~500 MF on switch.
I really like the set, it has good MF and increases the killing speed.

Today i was bored of Meph and just started Act5 with the MF gear on
/p1. I had no huge problems. Stygian Furies killed my merc few times.
Nihlathak caused 2 sudden deaths to me, i wasn't aware about his
CE skill.
I've rerolled ancients 2 times, one spawned FI/CI. Next time i'll remember
to put some potions in my inventory, finished with an empty belt :)
No notable problems with waves/baal.

Currently she has no armor skill at all, i had a armor on switch for some
time. Maybe it's due to the fact that i've finished her on /p1, but she
survived pretty good.

Gameplay: Since this was my first SP character, she was largely untwinked (I say largely as I ran hell meph 25 times in the hope of getting lucky for the rest of hell). Played at /p8 for norm and nm, /p1 for hell. No death’s until hell, when they were initially frequent. After that I got used to the high damage monsters and didn’t experience further problems until Acts 4 and 5. I surprisingly didn't die against Nihlathak, and I got impatient and TPed through the WSK to the throne because gloams were shredding me. I switched to gear with ~200% magic find for boss kills to try to pick up a few good items on the way. My mercenary was effective against cold immunes, as I found (have now sold without generating a report first) a 212% enhanced damage rare pike which I up’d to a Lance, and he managed a pretty good kill rate for an untwinked merc, as well as having decent overall survivability.

All items listed below are those only found during the first pass. My 25 meph runs didn't give me anything worth listing, anyway:

Although I came up very short on decent rares, between runes and uniques, I think that this little meteorber is simply meant to be a magic finder. I was fairly thorough and did all quests, but I still feel like I had some very nice drops just for questing through the game.

-For her, Meph running, Pindle running, rune running
-For me, I'll work on my level 44 summoner, who will one day run pits and WSK. On a non-mfing side, a pure avenger seems to be in my future.

Discussion:
This was my first character after a restart, and I did quite a bit of magic finding on the way, as you may have guessed from the equipment. Basically I had this plan that every time I get to some MF target, I'd do a certain amount of runs before moving on.

Going through the game was like it always is, normal is just waiting to get going, NM is a breeze, and hell is hell. Normal and NM I just run through on players 1, opposed to my usual style of (almost) full clears. I was surprised how well you gain levels this way btw. In hell things changed, I did full clears with players 3 all the way, including bosses. The Ancients were on players 1 though.

Oh yes, the Ancients. I was downright terrified when it was time to take them on. Well a (wo)man's got to do and so on... So I said, bring it on. First try.

First thing I hear, is the sound of a might aura. Great. As if the dummy didn't have enough trouble surviving as it is. Teleport a few times, notice that the whirler is extra fast, and apparently, with ancients that really is fast. Merc closes in on them, I hear amp curse and right after it, the merc dies. Well, that was to be expected. That gave me some time though, to take a look at the other mods, pause and consider my tactics. Curse and might, ok, but since the merc is already dead, it doesn't matter. I would die from the first or second hit anyway. Two are fire immune and one cold immune but not cold/fire. So, again no need for the dummy. I realised that this could actually be a very lucky roll for the mods, since no way in hell I could manage keeping the merc alive to kill a cold/fire immune. I decided to take them. The fight started as a hectic carousel, as I had no time to do anything but teleport, run around and cast orbs where I could, because the insanely fast whirler was always right on my heels. It was crazy, I must say. I was so tense that my hands started trembling, forcing me to flee to have a second or two to calm myself down. Luckily, the whirler fell first, pretty easily, actually, and things got a lot slower and safer. The might aura was gone too. Now I had time to actually plan a little where I would go next and pick up more potions. I started to have hope that I might win, but again had to flee and get a grip. No good starting to feel confident, it'll only get you killed. After a while the thrower fell. It was only me and the leaper left. Immediately I started wondering why I don't seem to do any damage to him, and realised that he is cold immune and I'm throwing orbs at him, duh.

In the end, I was victorious. I was stunned that I did it with the first try, and didn't even have to roll them again. But anyway, THAT is the real final battle in the game. Baal and his minions are just big, fat, lazy bags of exp compared to The Ancients.

I died three times in hell, but not in the WSK. All deaths were the result of running or teleporting head first to some monster pack. I also noted that my poor Razan gets his butt handed to him by a single frenzytaur. That's life in hell for you.

The first Ineedrunes was a pure blizzsorc designed to be a HF runner, trying to get me to HotO. She took way too long, was way too much of a hassle, and got extremely disappointing drops (I forget exactly what they were, but it was something like Ko+Lum), so the Ineedrunes project was shelved. Until about a week ago, when I made a trade with Rummski that netted me a 1.09 Ravenclaw. Sayonara awkward level 15-30 period with weird twinking options, hello utter ownage at light speed. So, with my new toy in hand (metaphorically, at least, it can't be wielded until lvl 15 :rolleyes:), I kicked project Ineedrunes back into gear.

I also decided that the project should have higher aims than simply another Gul (like, say...a Vex?), and took aim at building a more streamlined Baal runner. Currently all of my mats fulfill that role, but I wanted to know if I could improve on their times.

My Blizzballer, Coldfire, is my most experienced Baal runner, and fairly adept at that feat, but as my first sorc and second char after I started playing d2 seriously she has a few kinks. The biggest one being she went by the standard blizzballer guide that maxes meteor as well. Quite a useful skill, but pointless on a Baal runner. Fireball does decent, not great, damage, but the blizzard is lackluster. Runs times are decent at p1, but the damage isn't high enough to go much higher and Baal takes forever to kill. She does earn style points from using a Barbarian mercenary, though. I really love that guy: Doombringer + Duress + Guillaume's = laying the smack down.

Sparky, my pure lightning sorceress, also runs the big guy, and she's quite effective at it, surpassing the runtimes of my blizzballer fairly easily with her fully synergized build and even taking down Baal in less time than it takes to boil an egg. Her problem? Gloams. They just take too long to telebomb or cast lower resist on, so runs where they spawn are abandoned...which happens on an average of every 3rd run or so. Too tedious.

Strangely, Blizzy is probably my best all-around Baal runner at the moment. Thanks to the high level of her and the merc (94) she's able to telebomb cold immunes easily with little trouble. Takes down the minions quickly and drops Baal fairly swiftly. Runs average somewhere around 5 minutes (never actually timed, just check the clock), but the WSK map is crap (awesome AT map, though).

The hope is my new char can at least match the ease of running with Blizzy, if not surpass it. To that end, I decided on a Frozen Orb build with Fireball as a backup. I have a level 80 meteorb that runs Andy, so I'm familiar with Orb, and ever since reading CrazyRunnerGuy's threads about his quest to pump out max FO damage I've always wanted to make a synergized orb build. Since I was aiming for the most damage I could pump out, I decided to not use full tal's for this char. Focusing solely on the damage output, I tentatively think that was a good idea, but I feel fairly certain she'd be a better MFer with Tal's (or with a slightly tweaked setup from what I'm using, at least).

This was my first time going through the game with a Prayer mercenary and, while I like the life regen, I don't think I'll be using one again. I'm lazy enough (actually far too lazy) about quaffing potions as it is - I don't need to get used to being even worse. Plus, I prefer the tanking potential of a defiance merc or the damage potential of a might merc (or the tanking + damage potential of a barb merc ;)) over something I can easily get from tapping 1 when my bulb drops a bit.

Finds:

Well, I wish the Forges had turned out better. Not too much I can do about that, though. The dungo's was a nice surprise since she only had ~150 MF at the time.

Questing:

Normal was a breeze. Arctic set + hsarus' boots until lvl 15, then Iratha's, Twitchthroe, Treads of Cthon, and the 1.09 Ravenclaw. I'd only heard of it through myth and legend (read: Nightfish guardian threads) before, but I must say it does live up to its reputation. At 30 I started pumping FO/CM and switched to casting gear. Levelled to about 50 on Baal, starting on FB once FO was maxed.

Teleported through most of NM. Levelled up to ~75 in NM Baal, getting firebolt up to 15 hard points then focusing on maxing ice bolt.

Hell would've been rough, if I hadn't teleported through most of it. I leveled to 80 in AT so I could wear Arach's before moving on to Duriel, but otherwise I only stopped to kill bosspacks that were on the way or monsters that had to be killed.

Skill Allocation

As for skill placement, I put a point in static at 6, then got TK and teleport at 18. Waited to get any more skill until 30, at which point I leveled up FO and CM together until I got CM up to 5 hardpoints, so it would be at 17 when I was in end game gear. After CM was a decent level, I started putting points into FB, making sure I left enough to put one in FO at every level. Once FO and Fireball were maxed, I started dumping points in firebolt, aiming for enough to give a ~3k fireball. 15 points in firebolt did the job with the 1 point mastery, so I turned my attention to ice bolt, maxing it. Additional points were put in CM, but the ones from 82 to 85 were saved for an eventual gear shuffling. In hindsight, I tend to agree with Ohomemgrande about dumping more points in CM before upping ice bolt, it's more efficient. I was mostly focused on having a good base damage for the NW's to add to, but if you're going to be running Baal with this sorc, the extra levels to finish off ice bolt aren't going to be an issue.

If you don't have a 1.09 Ravenclaw or a gg twinking setup to get you to 30 without spending points, I'd up fireball when you can get it, dumping points into firebolt to up damage without upping mana cost. Going ahead and getting blizzard at 24 will probably help as well, if you need it for flayers.

Thoughts about build:

Let me just say now that, as far as questing goes, give me blizzard any day of the week. I'm not trying to put down FO (okay, maybe a little bit), it's a great skill and absolutely levels bosses if aimed correctly, but once you're used to the screen clearing power of blizzard (and taking two blizzard chars to 90+ will get you acclimated) FO almost seems like Concentrate in comparison. I actually tried to clear out part of the Chaos Sanctuary that had two bosspacks of Balrogs with 2-3 normal packs of OK's and I finally gave up after 4 merc revives because even with 105 FCR porting and firing constantly FO just doesn't clear out packs quickly enough. Right after that I realized that krovak used a FO sorc for AT runs in the alvl 85 tournament and I have to give him huge props for that because, if I had tried that, I probably would have gone out of my flippin' skull. Badmouthing aside, it made Big D weep like a small child.

Strangely enough, FO acts more like a non-timered spell than a timered one, in my opinion. Sure there's a casting delay, but it's very, very short as casting delays go and, considering its damage, the rate of fire is just fine. I do really enjoy the combination of FO and FB, since casting them seems quite similar and they both draw huge dividends from being well placed. I like my lightning sorc, with her constant positioning and re-positioning to get the right angles and top-end speed, so constant positioning with a speedy teleport and skill switching suits me pretty well.

Despite my disappointment with its crowd control abilities, I do believe that FO is the strongest skill a non-infinity wielding sorc can use for Baal running, because it eats single targets alive. If you target it properly, it does insane damage - INR_II can bring down the big guy faster than any of my other sorcs. Having said that, I still find FO a pain on the minions, because they move too much (Lister's pack, especially) and if the throne is really cluttered, clearing it out can be a pain. And, when dealing with Baal, I would suggest giving the merc a Kelpie Snare or a Reapers to keep him still and stop him from cloning/using his knockback attack. The biggest annoyance is him moving, though. You'll have him lined up just right and he takes two steps forward or back right as you fire, drastically reducing the damage done. Also keep in mind that the proper range for FO is within the range of Baal's manaburn attack, though that's little more than a mild irritant.

OK, so FO does good damage...how about Fireball? Well, I guess all I can really say is: it's okay. Not great; not terrible, just ok. It does what it needs to do in decent time, so I can't say anything bad about it. And, with no numbers to really back this up, only in-game feeling, INR_II's Fireballs seem to just just as much damage as my full tal's blizzballer's do, so that's good enough for me. I'm thinking about sticking a fire facet in the occy and seeing if that helps (obviously I need a cold facet in the NW's), although that'll tweak the balance with firebolt/FM. Speaking of which, I think I got that balance more or less right, but I'm not 100% sure. If anybody does know, feel free to tell me how I flubbed up.

Addendum after levelling her to 85:

I liked her more when I matted her than I do right now. Clearing the throne can be so insanely tedious with her, especially if there are OK packs. In fact, OK packs are possibly my most detested spawn with this char (FO owns gloams, much better than blizz in fact, so as long as you don't wander into their attacks they aren't much of an issue). Yes, OK packs are even more of a headache than dolls (cast->port->cast->port = dead dolls) for me with this build. Note: I don't mean a single OK pack, that's no problem whatsoever unless there's a huge mob or some weird other spawn, I mean 3 packs or so. The problem, as I see it, is: FO doesn't do the area damage that blizz does so you can't take down the melee meat shields quickly meaning that there are too many monsters in the way for you to get in there and fireball those OK's to death. Telebombing isn't all that effective because there are other OK's around and you're going to be surrounded in short order, anyway. Not to mention the fact that your merc is going to be decreped before he can do much damage and the OK will disappear behind a wall of shields.

I'm still fairly underwhelmed by the prayer merc. He's now wearing an Andy's and that, combined with his increased levels, has improved his staying power quite a bit, but he still can't stand up to wave 5 for any period of time and wave 4 gives him trouble fairly often, as well, and those are the two waves where you really need your merc to be able to stand in the middle of those packs and keep them in place so you can decimate them with orb. I'll be giving him Duress when I can do that and still have his resists > 70 (~** or so), but I don't relish the thought of having to level him to ~92+ for him to do his job properly.

As for Baal, I echo my previous statements to give the merc something to slow Baal down (though I'm too lazy to do that and lose out on insight :rolleyes:) because if you can keep him manageable you can drop him in no time at all. I'm not saying he really poses a threat otherwise, merely that he takes longer to kill and is more likely to raise your ire.

Future:

INR_II will be running Baal at least until I get a good feel for how well she holds up (so at least 88, probably more). If I really like the way she handles the big guy, I may change out her gear for some that's better suited for MFing (tal's armor, belt, etc.). As such, I'll be saving skill points in case I need to do some tweaking in the fire tree.

As for my other D2 plans: there's quite a few at the moment. Continuing the Ineedrunes project is a high priority, but so is finding a Death's Fathom. To that end, I'm starting a 5k AT run project as well. Maybe I'll beat the odds and find one in that time, but who knows. Also want to work on my Wolfbarb (who is at least created, though not *technically* begun) and a Frenzier. INR_III will most likely be a re-build of my blizzballer, possibly without the barb merc this time.

In closing: the build was for the most part enjoyable, and I would suggest people give it a shot. I don't think it's an optimal choice for a Baal runner, though, nor does it fit my playstyle, so the search continues.

Playing Experience
I didn't really like her to be honest. The main reason for this is the delay before a Meteor hits. Blizzard hits straight away, then you get the delay, Meteor has it at both ends making it very difficult to hit stuff if the Merc isn't standing there taking the hits. When Fireball got more powerful things got better though.
I chose to use Spirit shield and go without block. I have tried both routes for a sorc and am still undecided which I prefer.

Retirement Plans
Re-equip with more MF gear and go an pay NM Andariel a few hundred visits with the vain hope of finding a SOJ. I could use some more Manald Heal's for my melee characters anyway. And probably a few MP Baal runs to level her up a bit too.

Eventually I will make a Blizzballer and the Tal's Set will go onto her. But there are many more characters to Mat / Pat before I start that one.

Blaze is truly a unique skill among the sorceress arsenal. Not only it belong to same group as Berserk and Poison Dagger – which call for setups much different from what you usually use for those chars – but it also requires a big change in play style in order to use it effectively: suddenly running becomes much more important than teleport and the usual mercenary choices will probably be not so effective anymore; you have to stay close to the enemy but have the life pool of a sorceress and I didn’t even mentioned yet the various and usually conflicting needs that will affect your equipment choices....

When I made this sorc I had 2 goals in mind: as much FRW as I can master and combine blaze with ranged attack. While FRW wasn’t much of a problem, using bow with this sorc turned out to be a different matter completely. I blazed (literally) through the first 4 acts and although act 5 wasn’t much of a problem (still more difficult than the previous ones) I had a distant feeling of "wrongness" that something wasn’t exactly working as intended. I managed to drug it for about two and a half acts into NM before it got too frustrating to continue due to:

- Mix of immunities made it hard to effectively combine bow and blaze, especially when the melee ones, who chase you, were FI's and the archers weren’t. My damage was not enough to deal with them quickly, no merc to tank them, and in addition, blaze is hard to use vs statutory targets.​

- Blaze, as any sorc skill, gets a lot better with every skill point added while the bow side benefit more from equipment that add to DEX and AR which meant 2 different setups, more so, even the gameplay itself is quite different (blaze require constant moving = no shooting and shooting = no blaze is used) and since both setups meant to be used a lot it became a hassle to constantly switch between them.​

- High FRW it's all good and all but this equipment doesn’t add much in terms of blocking or damage reduction so every hit meant hit recovery and NDE experience.​

All the above coupled with fact that blaze required at least 60 points led to:

1. FO was chosen as a secondary attack – I could focus on + skills equipment
2. Added some FHR and iPDR to deal with stray hits
3. Added some LPK equipment – let's make the time spent running matter
4. Added some 'Replenish Life' – let's make the time spent running matter​

The game play became much easier after those changes and I could concentrate on laying blaze traps instead of dodging every hit.


So how to use blaze effectively?


The most popular methods include: overlapping circles, repeating the same line or cover a small area with overlapping lines. From my experience all of them have their uses depending on monsters types and attacks but what I found worked best was:

1. To advance in small segments while backtracking from time to time to cover small area with blaze
2. Once monsters were sighted, to teleport near them to bring the merc to my side
3. Let the merc to tank/distract the monsters for few moments/hits while covering a small area with blaze (about
5-10 overlapping lines) behind her​
4. Teleport to the other side of the patch and let the monsters follow me through the fire​

While quite effective versus any non-FI monsters that tend to follow me, I still had to struggle quite a bit with ranged types that tend to shoot first (and a lot) and follow later. Lots of FRW really help with quickly applying the said tactic but in the same time make it hard to control your char especially against ranged attacks, more than once I dodged a missile only to catch it while I reapplied a blaze line.


Journey

The beginning was uneventful and since I took a few long breaks while leveling her, I don’t remember much from those early stages.

Areas with lots of fire immune monsters are naturally more difficult, the first 3 areas in act 5 were pure hell with slingers, skeleton archers, those blue fallens and constant bombarding. At one point I even made 'Sanctuary' RW to deal with those pesky archers but even this proved not so effective since I still had to get close to them to use its charges. As with act 2 (skeletons and mummies) the most annoying proved to be the fallen groups with their long range resurrection (at least 3 screens away!) that made it hard to isolate the shamans. In both cases the solution was to lure the minions away, then teleport near the shamans/mummies and while the rogue shot at them I guarded our back with blaze and FO.

Arcane Sanctuary proved too much with its narrow spaces and though mix of immunities it was hard to make them chase me especially those vampires. After SLOWLY clearing one branch I just lost patience and teleported to the summoner platform. On the other hand Maggot lair proved to be a lot of fun and I foresee some time spent there in the future with this sorc.

RoF was another fun area without any FI monsters (including Hephasto) those who didn’t follow into blaze were killed with FW. CS was much easier than I expected, melee monsters were easily separated from oblivion knights and fell quickly to FO, the ghost type aren’t fire immune and that left only the OKs as the real problem. They were a bit tricky with their tendency not to follow and their skull spirit that forced me to break "eye contact" in order to avoid it but eventually I got them moving either by retreating or by setting FW underneath them.

I was a bit optimistic about the ancients hoping to defeat them in short manner, while Korlic and Madawk weren’t much of a problem Talic really gave me a RUN for my money. Eventually they went down after about 10 min.

Baal was much easier than I thought he will be, once the rogue hit him (50% slow) he almost didn’t moved from his spot, few FWs and a bit of LR charges took care of him. He did manage to clone himself twice but fast trip to town took care of it.

All in all a very interesting build with a different play style and can teach you a thing or two about the AI of ranged units. The only major drawback is the toll that build take on your eyes and hands with constant moving and poor graphic.

The story:
she started out as a frost nova sorc, but when i reached act 2, it was so underpowered i decided to respec to orb as far as i could, and 20 in frost bolt as synergy. this made my glacial spike stronger then the frost nova i had been using... seriously, that skill is underpowered..

anyway, i went on to 30, and nightmare was over in a blink using synergized orb. at act5 i decided to respec to hydra orb, which was fun, but i had already done it, so i decided to respec again in act 1, this time to meteorb. i however forgot to add static field and teleport... seriously, those were two vey long levels till i got teleport back... she actually felt like a non-sorc char :p

well, meteorb is a coockie cutter, and i knew it, meteor was really powerfull, and orb, well, good enough for its points :D she got a gul in the sewers, my highest rune ever (i love 1.13 :p) and got mal from hellforge. the ancients were rather difficult (tho not really due their mods, only the whirler was dangerous) because 2 of the three, (the leaper and whirler) where immune to my powerfull element, fire. my merc had to solo the leaper, as he was CI/FI, (fire enchanted teleport) so it took a while, and then it was on too baal, who was rather easy :)

the future:
she'll run baal for one ofhis essences and repec blizzy to get me a decent item base (first meph then at)

Yep, it happened. Just killed Baal, and to my surprise it wasn't very hard. The Ancients were much harder and I had to reroll 'em 5 times to get some survivable mods (anything non FI/CI is suvivable! :lol: ).

FreezinFire was very easy to play, and I died at the most 5 times, all of the due to my stupidity. ("I wonder if it is possible to tank Hephasto, who is Fanatiscm Enchanted and Extra strong, while I wear an Amplify Damage curse?" It wasn't :lol: )

I wanna thank San and Tasdaz for alot of items (most of my charms, my mask, my rings and a Skin of the Vipermagi), and jjscud for trading with me at weird prices (Occy for full tals, kthx?).

My next character is going to be f00ry dr00d, utiziling my newly found Jalals.

Well I recently restarted. This means of course I need a magic finder, so introducing Malice the Meteorb sorceress. She's my very first meteorb as I normally build a lightning sorceress for magic finding purposes. Wanted something different this time around.

Playing softcore, thankfully. Had I not then Malice's journey would have ended in the Normal Blood Moor, I kid you not. Right at the beginning of the Cold Plains was a pack of 3 Champion Brutes that Flaive attracted my way by shooting at them (and missing I might add). Very tough characters for a level 6 sorceress with purely starting gear and a one point static field/firebolt. Without a merc to distract them I tried to get in close enough to static them a bit, and got too close. A quick stunlock second later Malice was dead, my earliest death ever. :shocked:

After that auspicious start Malice made good progress through Normal with no other close calls or really interesting issues. Picked up Frozen Orb just before dealing with Mephisto so from then until Nightmare it was a cakewalk.

However Nightmare gave me some problems. Apparently the Diablo gods knows I've restarted and therefore threw as many bosspacks at me as possible, normally in pairs. This lead to a death in the Dark Wood. A might enhanced bosspack of spearwomen snuck up on me under the trees, didn't see them until Malice was sprawled on the ground. Another death to a superfast lighting beetle bosspack in Act II didn't help my confidence in this build much (or my abilities). However everyone seems to swear by it so I stuck with Malice. She started to slow down considerably in the Kurast areas of Act III, but slowly and surely got to Mephisto. Used the tried and true tactic of leaving the mercenary as bait for the boss. Mephisto killed the merc but at the same time Malice was able to static field him alot. This lead to several minutes of Malice running circles around Mephisto throwing Frozen Orbs. Same tactic used on Diablo and Baal (with some meteor thrown in).

Hell ended up being as long as I expected, even when run at /p1. Of course the first three bosses Malice encountered were fire/cold immune but after that they got more managable, but guys like this still showed up regulary. Didn't help that she was wearing her magic find gear until Act IV as I forgot it was equiped (explains why her resistances were negative). :rolleyes: Once this was corrected she did a bit better until Act V, where every drop was picked up for gold in order to pay for mercenary resurections. Must have resurected him at leat 50 times in Act V alone. Oddly enough, the regular monsters gave Malice more trouble than the act bosses, both Diablo, Baal and Baal's Minions fell very fast, with Baal requiring 30 seconds tops, and the Ancients were only rerolled twice due to receiving dual fire/cold resistant opponents.

One thing to note is that the WSK did give one of the nastiest monster grouping possible. Dolls and Gloams backed up by Horadrim Ancients. :yikes: A lot of cat-and-mouse was played to draw monsters away from their packs to deal with them in 2-3 sized groups.

Well, I finally managed to burn baal with another character:

Matriarch Crispy, the fairly standard meteorb

I learned a lot from her though, perhaps even more than from my fishymancer. Especially in the "don't get your behind kicked" area 😁 She was quite fun to play as well. When I started her I was affraid she'd be too fragile for my skills in the last part of the game. But she pleasantly surprised me. After a bad start in Hell followed by a change to more resistance-oriented gear, she did pretty well.

She managed to hold her own against pretty much everything, including a WSK level with fetishes, oblivion knights and frenzy taurs (including a fanatiscism boss pack of 'taurs and a CE/LE/Conviction OK :shocked:) Hell ancients was probably her toughest spot. It took quite some rerolls and a few deaths until I was able to separate them before they had my merc for breakfast. I also found stygian furies more annoying than I'd expected. It seemed to me they required more maneuvering than most other types of enemies.

At first I thought I wouldn't bore you with her gear. Although she's a lot more twinked than my first pat, it's still nothing too interesting. But I changed my mind. Might as well prove even a newbie with so-so equipment can take this through hell :wink3: Apart from the follwing, she carried a whole lot of resistance charms, two life charms, one gheed's and:

Gameplay

I had already completed the Anya quest to get to Pindle so that is the waypoint I started from. The Crystalline Passage, Glacial Trail, Frozen Tundra, and Ancient's Way all went smoothly. Firewall and merc handled all. Then it was on to the Ancients

Went in and took them out on the first roll. The WWer and thrower were both lightning immune and one was lightning enchanted. They both fell to Blizz quickly. The only trouble was Korlic (the leaper). He was CI and Extra Fast. He just kept blowing right past my merc and was coming right after me. He was so fast that by the time I cast (edit: FW not Blizz) I already had to teleport from his leap and the (edit: FW not Blizz) missed. This teleporting also meant my merc couldn't get a lock on him. I eventually just tanked him. His up-close melee attack took about a quarter to a half of my life per hit. But I survived long enought for the merc and FW to do its trick and onto the WSK I went.

I had a lucky roll for the WSK 1-3. Nothing really dangerous. The hell witches cast amp damage and my merc went down a few times but that was it. Then onto the Throne room.

I entered with nothing blocking the door and not an OK in sight. I breathed a sigh of relief. A boss pack of Minotaurs came out. The minions went down straight away but the boss was CI/FI so it was up to my merc. He took a beating and it took 3 Full rejuvs but once his Decrep curse from the Reaper's kicked in, it went ok.

I took a few more steps towards the main chamber and saw a slight flash of white lightning. Uh oh. 2 seconds later I was down. Yep, you guessed it, Burning Souls. These things beat me up good. It only took 2 hits for me to die to a single one. The first hit would lock me up so I couldn't teleport and couldn't run so basically any hit from them killed me. I went really slow and eventually killed them. Had 4-5 deaths here but luckily no boss packs with conviction. Onto Baal's minions. All on players 1.

First wave of minions went down no problem. Second wave was going down and out of nowhere 2 small flashes of white lightning. "What the h*ll?" was all I could think before I realized that 2 Burning Souls had entered the Throne room. One on each side of me. Down I went again to the crossfire. Looking back, it was actually pretty comical to think they each took one side and lit me up. Sorc bbq. After I finished them off, the rest of the waves went straight down. Lister was extra fast and CI so I parked him.

Baal was a pushover. He cloned himself in the first 15 seconds but he went down easily enough. He dropped Isenhart's Sword. :cry:

Now, she will go back to running Meph, Pindle, and the Tunnels. She will never visit the Throne room or Baal again. But she will MF on with the title she so greatly deserves.

Matriarch subtwo_vii - The Sub Two Hour Sorceress

About a year ago, I started the Sub2 - The Twinked Speedrunning Project as a long-term side project to test the limits of twinked play. The goal was to kill Hell Baal within 2 hours of character creation, with no pauses in the timer.


The Run

Although this is a Players X run, I only switch between P1 and P8. P1 to quest through the game quickly and P8 to maximize experience. Balancing experience farm and quest progression is a crucial aspect of the run.

Right from the start I mule in all the items I'll need to complete Act 1. I run straight for the Cold Plains WP while leaving a TP next to Den. There's no need to kill anything in the Blood Moor when Den can get me to level 5 quickly. Sub 3 minute Den here is a good start. Continuing on the dirt path, I only kill bosses and large groups of monsters as I race towards the Barracks. The Underground Passage map is really good, just the one minimum map tile between the entrance and exit tiles. Usually 6 minutes entering Dark Woods at level 7-8 is good, but the 5:10 here is great.

Even though I reached the Barracks quickly, the number of boss spawns aren't great. The Black Rogue and Bone Mage boss packs are stable, and sometimes a 3rd pack will spawn. The one thing the Barracks had going for it was the short route to all the bosses. I leveled to 18 here, allowing me to use teleport charged staves to get through the rest of Act 1. I finished Act 1 at about 21 minutes, which isn't bad at all.

Act 2 is more progress oriented as Act 3 has better experience. I kill a few groups of monsters here and there, but generally one level up is all I get in Act 2. Maps were not kind to me in this act and I lost some time here.

Act 3 maps were better, even without a Great Marsh skip. The Ruined Temple map turned out to be the large one, and I was able to get a boss pack alongside Sarina to expedite my experience to level 23.5. I continued to use teleport charges here due to inventory space efficiency. 52 teleport charges gets me alot farther than 4 regular mana potions afterall.

Continuing on in Act 4, I forget to kill Izual at P8, so I had to kill a few more mobs in the CS to make up a little more experience to get to level 24 heading into Act 5. I teleport straight to Ancients and dinged level 25 heading into the 1st of 2 normal Baal runs. P8 Lister is one of the tougher fights in this run due to their stun and life regen. Life regen is based off a percentage of max life, and those minions of destruction have a massive life pool at players 8. It makes finishing them off with Nova a little tricky, especially if I get stunned and have my Nova casting interrupted. Lister is easier on the 2nd Baal run due to higher Nova damage. It would have been even easier if I remembered to spec Lightning Mastery, but I didn't immediately realize that I hit 30.

The final task in normal difficulty is to go respec into our endgame build- Frozen Orb/Hydra. FO is the main killing spell while Hydra is the backup spell for the mandatory cold immunes- Lord de Seis, Korlic, and wave 2 Bone Mages. I also mule in the remaining endgame items to accompany the respec.

Nightmare is where the fun really starts. Most of the gear swapping is done and there are no more charged items to repair- it's time to just rush through the game. Nightmare is fairly straight forward, rush through the game and kill and boss packs I see along the way. NM CS is done on P8 for experience as well as 2 NM Baal runs, just like normal. Mixed in some LR charges for faster kills.

I proceeded to Hell at level 55, 2 levels short of CTA. Dying can be a great time loss, especially when I'm speeding through the maps and not picking up WP's. Act 1 Hell is not incredibly dangerous, so my goal is to pick up some experience along the way so that I can enter Act 2 with BO. Players 8 allows me to be very picky about what I fight for experience, and archers is definitely not a group I'm willing to fight. Higher risk of death is not worth it here when I can just kite melee monsters all day.

Even with CTA, my life total isn't at a point where I can be relaxed. Most importantly, my Sorc doesn't get put into hit recovery as often with the higher max life, and as a result, can escape bad teleports more easily. I get through Act 2 and 3 deathless, all the while skilling up Hydra.

My first CS attempt ends in a quick death trying to activate De Seis' seal. Minimal time loss, that's fine. 2nd attmept, FI/CI De Seis, abort. 3rd attempt, CI only De Seis, great. I leave De Seis to check up on Infector. The blue balrog turns even bluer with a Frozen Orb, perfect! Vizier cannot be FI/CI dual immune and can always be killed. I was a bit short on experience and switched to P8 for Vizier to get level 60. I forget to switch back to P1 before Diablo spawned, so some time loss there.

Rolling Act 5 Ancients is like rolling slots, you need all 3 of them to line up. Korlic and Talic cannot be FI/CI dual immune, and Madawc cannot roll CI. Things like extra fast and might should be avoided, as that can get very scary, especially if no WP's were picked up on the way. It's not hardcore, but dying here without WP's would basically kill the run.

I finish up Ancients and head into the Worldstone Keep, which is probably the deadliest area in the game to teleport through so far. Quick WSK 1 map- great. In WSK 2, I find the entrance to WSK 3 first. Do I take a minor time loss and search for the WP or do I go all in and accept whatever throne room gives me? With ample time, I took the safe route and grabbed the WP. I ended up quiting a semi-dangerous throne with souls for a more tame throne in the next game.

Baal waves is usually not an issue unless I execute poorly. I kill wave 5 since I did not remember if the throne entrance was empty or not. Usually it's faster to just lead out Lister's pack, but I didn't want to risk running into some nasty mobs. Baal falls at 1:57:51, well below the 2 hour mark.

While showing the final build at the end of the video, I groan as I realized that Fire Mastery was unskilled, leaving Hydra at about half its potential damage. No wonder Hydra felt weaker in this run.. I see it as time to be gained next time!

Given the Fire Mastery mishap, Hydra did decently well. I wonder if more points could be diverted to Ice Bolt/Cold Mastery for more FO damage instead. Definitely something to consider in a Blizzard build variant to level up Ice Blast.

I need help? Hell yes!

I have a problem with the rest of my skill points that will come. Where to put them? Basically, I know that I'll but them to fire skills to boost Fireball damage. After I can get Arach's on, plus skills boosts Cold Mastery to magical lvl17 (-100% res), so I don't need to but points there. And after I get +5% cold damage facet into my Nightwing's, I think my Blizzard damage is good enough. So the fireskills:

Fire Mastery or Meteor? Each point in Fire Mastery gives 7% more damage, every point in Meteor gives 14%. If I go the Meteor route, I'll have to use 3 skillpoints to prereqs. But after those 3 spent skills, Meteor gives twice as much damage than Firemastery and it can be used before wave2 spawns. So, after 5 more levels (6 skillpoints to use), it doesn't matter FB damagewisely, which one I'll choose, both gives the same amount, 42% extra damage. But I feel kind of frustrating to spend 3 points to get to the Meteor.

I have 21 skill points left (If I'll get to 99), so I could get my Meteor to lvl18, but on the other hand, I could max Fire Mastery and spend two points for Ice Blast or Cold Mastery :lipsrsealed: Although, I propably won't see her higher than 94/95, so I should take the Meteor route?

What you guys think?
