Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room: yes, I have said in the past that I hate Paladins. Yes, I did say I would only make another Paladin if I came up with an interesting/unique idea. And, yes, a Frost Zealot counts as neither.

However, if a person were to decide to make a sept centered around cookie-cutter builds completing the game with items of a specific subset of rarity (and especially if said person were to define said subset as “items easily* obtainable from Nightmare Mephisto”) you’d have something interesting. Or maybe the opposite of that. Either way, the result would be a person needing to build a Paladin and, if that person were, say, to find Paladins abhorrent, they might want to get the suffering out of the way early. They might also, upon finishing said character, write up a patriarch thread complete with an awkward third person introduction, likely because hundreds of hours of Ancient Tunnels running have turned their brains into a puddly goo.

I’ll point out now that I’m planning on timing these characters. Not as a race or because I want to try and get done as quickly as can be done, but because I want to make sure I’m not just making junk builds and grinding them through. I’ll play them with the same race through when I feel like it, dally when I don’t style I always use, but this just keeps me from being able to say a char did alright when he actually took 40 hours to finish or something. Also just interesting for me, as I can then make more typical characters down the line and compare. This particular fellow completed the game in 26 hours, 7 minutes and 45 seconds.

Planning:

Needless to say I put a lot of thought into what I wanted this guy to wear. My original plan was full Iratha’s, Twitchthroe, Rhyme in a paladin shield, Fleshrender, Goblin Toe, Cathan’s Seal and Manald Heal complete with a Harmony wielding Rogue. Wanted a Rogue because it was quite evident that setup would lack AR badly and Inner Sight is kinda good. I ran that gear through Normal (as it became available) and into Nightmare, but it became clear the AR just wasn’t going to be enough, so I tried to switch over to my backup plan (which is actually his current kit) but I was short the Stealskull and Moser’s. So from very early into Nightmare until I set him aside during Hell Countess runs he wore Guillaume’s Face, Sigon’s Gage, Sigon’s Wrap, Rhyme in a 27% res all pally shield and Manald Heal (instead of Raven Frost.) Set him aside somewhere around the middle of June, picked him back up after the MFO, in which I found the Stealskull and the Moser’s he finished the game using. Switched the rogue over from Harmony when I remembered I had a Witchwild, as Harmony was less synergistic with both the build and the theme.

If anyone’s interested, the early twinking gear looked like this:

Arctic Belt + Gloves + Berserker hat + armor + axe + Hsarus shield and boots . Full Sigon’s when available. Isenheart’s sword into General Tan Do Li Ga into Bloodletter into Coldsteel Eye into the Fleshrender. Steelclash into grim rhyme into gilded rhyme. Put on Twitchthroe and full Iratha’s when they became available. Goblin Toe at 17. Swapped Goblin Toe out for Nat’s boots when I switched to the Guillaume’s setup, then swapped out Nat’s boots for Aldur’s in order to rework my charm space for more AR.

Playthrough:

Nothing particularly interesting early on; p8 up til Hell. Leveled up to 45 at normal Pindle, then to 51 on Baal before going into NM. Leveled up to 72 on NM Pindle. NM Ancients were: ES Whirler, Stone Skin other two. Took all my reds, but weren’t especially bad. NM Keep level 2 was gloams, beetles and flayers, creating a few dicey moments with my propensity to charge through areas blindly, especially when I found myself surrounded by beetles and flayers in the middle of a 4-arm hallway with gloams on each arm. Moved on to Hell at level 74.

Quested through to the Countess’ tower (which was kindly enough directly beside the waypoint) then stopped to do leveling runs. Took about 9 hours to level up to 83. With the Guillaume’s/Rhyme setup I was doing p3 countess runs, but if I’m honest even they were overzealous, once I switched into the final gear, it was p1 all the way (well, I tried p2 once, but having to use basically a full belt on a PI/LE goat pack backed by an archer bosspack told me all I needed to know about that.)

Most of Act I was spent leveling in the Countess’s tower; not much of note past that. I ventured into the Pits twice around level 80, but once I found myself out of potions while surrounded by two rather innocuously modded rogue bosspacks I decided to stick to the countess runs. Andy went down easily, dropping an essence and garbage.

Act II was, as expected, rough. There was a bosspack of ghosts with Might around the Summoner, so I tossed up a TP while they went after the merc, trying to kill the summoner and duck into the portal before they could get to me, but a goatman on the stairs stopped that plan. The ghosts hit too hard for reds - the Summoner’s Frost Novas didn’t help - and it didn’t take long for them to burn through all my purples. Resed the merc after I died, darted into the TP and started running, eventually feeding the merc to the ghosts while I circled around, rescued my corpse and finished off the Summoner. Best Friend Simulator 2014; new top score! Charged through the majority of the Act, except for Tal’s tomb, where I just ran around with Sanctuary up, hoping to not get caught. Duriel was no trouble.

Act III jungle layout was good: Spider Cavern in the first offshoot, waypoint and entrance to Flayer Jungle area with Gidbinn + Dungeon in the next offshoot. Had to dance around Stormtree’s (ES/LE/CE) pack, but they went down eventually. Lucked out in the Sewers as well, finding the way down rather quickly. Lured the Council out in waves, Toorc and some of his buddies coming first and forcing a resupply retreat, but on the whole they weren’t too worrisome. An Amp/ES pack of Blunderbore just inside Durance level 1 required some more hit and run tactics. Durance 2 was absolutely jam-packed with dolls, so I did what any noble slayer of evil kitted for battling demons in their lairs would do: I stuck a sign on my chest that said “plis to not be disturbed. Kthxbye” (read: turned on Sanctuary) and ran like a thoroughbred on race day. Meph was the easiest opponent on his level by an order of magnitude (Stone Skin + LE Blood Lord pack in the same room as a Stone Skin/CE Council member was good times.)

River of Flame spawned Finger Mages, Grotesques, and Sand Maggots which was fun*. Forge was a Lum, but both the perfect and one of the flawless gems were amethysts, so I’m happy with the result. Hephasto was Holy Freeze/Amp. Also a puppy. Apparently I kill puppies, at least when they get in the way of me saving the world from a Prime Evil. Consider yourself warned, diminutive dachshunds. Chaos Sanctuary took 50 minutes, including a death and reload to Infector of Souls’ pack. Also died on the next time, but had the forethought to put down a TP and was able to run back in from the waypoint, lead enough of them away, then run pack to the waypoint, use the TP and take down Infector and two of his buddies (still took a bunch of potions, apparently ES/CE Infector is a big deal ... who knew?). Rest of the seal bosses were no worries; Diablo was nice enough to spam lightning hose instead of actually dealing damage.

Bloody Foothills had imps and wasps. Frozen River had yetis, witches and lancers. Ancients rolled with nothing dangerous, which was good because I hadn’t grabbed a waypoint since Crystalline Passage. WSK1 had witches, vampires, and charging undead. WSK2 was straight up act 2: snakes, bats and beetles. WSK3 had imps, skeleton mages and flayers. Throne had Pit Lords, gloams and frenzytaurs. Waves 4 and 5 required splitting up, but fell quickly and quietly from that point. Baal provided neither challenge nor reward.

About The Character

Patriarch Liberace was Patted Tuesday November 22 and was inspired by AE himself. Upon reading AE's "Liberace Project" and "Liberace-The Next Generation" threads I thought I'd give the ideal/build a go, of course with my own twist. My Liberace is by no means exactly what I think AE had in mind but it's perhaps a close shot. I took the idea and quickly began putting it to play....within 2 weeks I patted Liberace. The idea was to socket his equipment with rare jewels and have as much light radius as possible for a perfectly bright, radiant and glowing Pally. He ended the game with +20 to light radius and shined and shimmered like you wouldn't believe! It was no easy task Patting Liberace considering he was very limited on equipment but he pulled through just fine, infact the only problems he had were the very latter parts of Hell in the Hall Of Vaught and the Hell Ancients. I didn't have very many rare jewels to work with so I just used what I had....when he first started I had a crown socketed with 3 of them and a shield with 4, once I got to NM I used socketing quests to socket some better equipment with what I had left so he could make it to the end.The build and the idea was tremendous fun and at times laughable but I never got bored......for all you Pally fans out there I highly suggest playing a build similar to this for lots of fun and interesting game play.

Well, he was really safe to play, due to the massive slow from the aura and the life tap from the dracul's. In act 1 he found the inevitable blood hawknest bosspack. In act 2 he got an amazing drop from duriel, hell forge gave him a Ko rune, while nm forge had given him a sol rune. In the ancients way he found a really scary bosspack, and if life tap hadn't triggered just after that screenie i'd have been dead (the aura is holy frost if you didn't see that) The ancients were easy, didn't need a single reroll, but i did need to try wsk3 multiple times as it kept getting a ok spawn. now i had survived ok's before, but those were the only dangerous monsters around, and even that was hard, now i'd need to do it with frenzitaurs or gloams around... so i tried untill i got a no-ok map, which did have ok's in the throne room, but there were only few, which made them manageable. Eventually baal died, and i got this screen :D

As for the future, i don't know, i might take him on a couple of coutess runs, but that'll probably be it. not sure what im gonna do now, either play my ik-barb to pat (he's in act 4 nm, or one of my many chars in normal act 2 :D

The namesake of the character comes from the villain in Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. Great Movie. Cool character. Essentially a mundo sized man who rules the wastelands with force and as a two handed zealot your attempting the same thing. Pick up a big stick and beat demons with it. Rinse and repeat.

The central design of the character was establishing a more enjoyable trav runner. I originally went with the tried and true WW barb but between mana burn issues and horking filling up the entire screen I just felt frustrated and inefficient. Compounding that with the number of runs needed to generate any runes worth of note was just unbearable. I needed something fun but not totally trash.

The Switch is a Cta/Spirit but during the initial leveling I did not have it and actually used an 'obedience' thresher to get the free Enchant as AR never seemed high enough.


Skills: Pretty Self explanatory. Maxed zeal/sac/fan and blessed aim with some points going towards sanctuary, redemption, and salvation and then all extra points go into vigor so I can cruise through town a little faster.

Charms are all pretty much focused on AR, life, and a wee bit of resistances. Could definitely be upgraded and theoretically overtime trav should help that.

I think the hand of broc at early levels

Thoughts:

Normal and NM were played on /players 8 and honestly was a ton of fun. I just dumped everything into Str early and then experimented with every 2 handed item one can try. Most are pretty worthless but steeldriver (normal and upgraded) is awesome, doing zeal with a spear is interesting look but for the most part everything was fairly bland until I hit 'obedience'. Yikes! My damage was incredible. Nearly everything died in 1-2 hits including bosses due to the high CB.

Hell things became more challenging... especially not having access to CtA. Resistances were obviously a huge issue and I would constantly swap gear according to certain areas. Hell was done on p5 really out of necessity of the monsters sake, most things legitimately die in 1 shot so I actually needed higher health points to leech back when getting mobbed down. Its bit of rollercoaster ride watching the red bulb go from near 0 to full in microseconds constantly.

The majority of intimidating monsters, udars and frenzytaurs are pretty pathetic compared to the damage I deliver. Essentially the strategy is to hit harder and leech back more than the enemy can dish out. The simple fact is, I carry the largest stick, and anything trying to out muscle me was never going to win.

The biggest threat was really ranged minions (of course) but more importantly the undead archers found in Act 1, Act 2 and parts of act 5. You can't leach off them, you don't have shield and your armor stats are fairly low so the majority of those shots are coming in hot and heavy. Something I had never noticed before was that their fire rate is astounding. Within a few seconds a champion pack can easily unleash 30 shots. At times sanctuary is effective but then you lose out on a massive amount of AR and of course the archers are never jammed into one area, they're always 2-3 packs scattered around so knocking back one group really does nothing to the others.

Necessity is the mother of invention and through this backbreaking game of guerilla warfare I was forced to play, I found use for a unique I never dawned before. Darksight Helm - the ability to cast dim vision was actually fairly helpful though not always consistent but the charges of CoS was a complete game changer. I considered going with the runeword gloom but again having control when to cast CoS was really irreplaceable.

Special mention to gloams, Succubi, and exploding dolls but no surprise there. I feel every melee build has issues with those guys and idk how but I had just the worst luck in terms of map rolls. Gloams everywhere in the plains of despair along with the mission to anya - eventually had to swap to kira and GA to deal with the constant barrage. Sanctuary is your only grace against the dolls, zealing them is instant death.

So quite a few deaths in all honesty, but since acquiring the CtA I'm virtually indestructible during trav runs with the exemption of rolling conviction so I got that going for me.

Besides those creatures nothing was really difficult. Hell ancients were a breeze.

All in all fun champion but a little more challenging than I thought when initially coasting through the game. It's a bit of a waltz between offense and survivability.

No, I don't know exactly how to pronounce his name either.

I don't really have too much to say on the experience because I started this character some several months ago, got to Hell, and got bored for a bit. Then I picked him up some weeks later and made it to Act 5 Hell, and did the same. Then I just finished him today. So I can't remember a lot of stuff, but some points that I do remember are:

1) It's safe, very very safe. Between 75% 1 Frame blocking, masses of defence (which I know is mostly useless, but still helps), and Lifetap with a something/4 frame Zeal, I was mostly invincible. Even Frenzytaurs didn't scare me. Much. Physical Immunes were sometimes tricky though.

2) I. HATE. IRON. MAIDEN. Its a killer to melee builds yes, but its just extra dangerous with a Zealot. At NM Chaos Sanc I thought that I'd just 'be careful' and 'not zeal with OK's around' and I'd be fine. A dozen deaths later, I found out that simply being careful means jack. You need a IM solution or you will die. By Hell, I had wised up and brough a Lacerator with me, and used that to kill OK, and things went a lot smoother. Apart from the 12 or so IM deaths in NM, I don't think I died once.

3) Left click attacking sucks. Thanks to Auras being restricted to the right click, there is no way around this, and it makes targetting annoying sometimes. I had a whole game to think of ways that this problem could've been fixed, and my favourite was right-clicking with an aura active should just execute a left-click attack. I'd kill for that functionality. The other was to just simply allow auras on the left click, as the benefit of two auras going at once would surely be countered by the fact that you can't attack anything.

This was the best I had laying around in terms of fast-one handers. It did the job pretty well, the Freeze Monster was useful and left no corpses to be revived (except for CI monsters), but the short range was a pain in the *** sometimes, as I'd get close enough for a swing, but somehow not close enough for a Zeal.

Ancients were easy,becoz i got ?o curse and aura mods andLister was easy too.

Tho most of the game was "hold zeal",there was some hard things too

1.Problem and it got broken very often and i died many times becoz of this.
2.Phys immunes,exspessialy ghosts-becoz conviction and vengeance killed very slowly i ran past them most of the time.

In the conclusion i enjoyed playing my first melee paladin very much and prolly my next project is either frost or tesladin.

Acolon, can't even remember where his name comes from. Started him about 6 months ago, played for 15 minutes and parked him until I continued playing him on Wednesday. It was quite fast playing, because I knew already what I'll be using, what skill layout, everything was crystal clear. Just fast questing/leveling all the way. Let's start with his skills.

I wanted to fully synergize Holy Shock and I don't regret it. Most of the time I used Holy Shock, so why not pumping it to the max. I decided to get Zeal to 20 first, so it boosts my AR and a little my physical damage for leeching. Sacrifice is practically helping my leeching and my physical damage overall.

Why not Holy Shield? I bought some time ago +3 HS Scepter from Jaedhann (or was it Darkoooo, can't remember anymore) and the best use of it for me, is to save some valuable skills. After all, I wouldn't have put more than 1 point in there, so +3 HS Scepter saved me 5 skill points (7 points, if put 3 Hard Points to HS). That's a lot in my eyes. But let's go to the damage numbers.

450-8575 (Main Switch, Crescent Moon and Holy Shock aura active)
1-1139 (Main Switch, Crescent Moon, Holy Shock Pulse damage)
159-10k (Lightning+Physical Switch, Oath Cryptic and Holy Shock aura active)

As you can see, Acolon's damage is higher with Oath than Crescent Moon, but CM's -35 lightning res was so powerful, it killed a lot easier. I shouldn't call them as Switches, because I had the other weapon in my inventory and swapped the weapon when needed. Other switch had that +3 HS Scepter and Hoz, and I didn't want to swap that, because I needed to cast HS quite often. So, what was his gear?

I chose HF merc because I was too lazy to toggle between HF and HS every 2 seconds. Besides, I think there's a little delay between toggling where I don't do any damage so toggling nonstop may very well make me do crappy damage. The merc turned out to be uber good. I relied on him so much. He was an awefully good tank, and I swear, I died more than he did.

Well, as expected normal and NM (NM ESPECIALLY) were super easy. The early parts of normal took a bit of time since I didn't have my skills, and I only had 1 point into zeal. If you decide to make one of these guys, I recommend you use Milabrega's at L17. I didn't have the armor (I found one in Hell A1, blah) so I didn't use it, but from my research, the full set gives you a 5 hit zeal as well as some nice AR. Other than that, it was super easy.

Hell was for the most part pretty easy. I entered Hell at L70. Found my HF wasn't doing much, so I levelled a bit at P5 cold plains. NM Baal woulda been a much more efficient choice, but meh, I found Milabrega's robes and a Pul rune here so it all worked out.

A1 was easy and uneventful and Andy dropped nothing

A2 was easy and uneventful as well, except I refused to kill Duriel before getting my full gear on, so I just cleared Arcane, Canyon and Tombs til I hit L83

A3 was easy and uneventful until Durance, when those stupid dolls appeared. I just hid behind Gulzar and let him take care of the dolls. I hate those dolls. They are such a BS unit.

A4 was pretty hard. Izzy and Forge were easy, but Chaos was tough tough tough. Chaos was really the one time I really found out how helpful my merc was. I did most of it without the merc and man, it was the toughest time I've had. Infector was absolute hell. I don't see how my 90 fire resist combined with dwarf star STILL isn't enough to take him on, but damn he was the hardest boss in the game for this guy. Diablo was easy and his best attacks (his hose and his firestorm) barely scratched me.

A5 wasn't bad. Ancients were hard and took forever though. The first try, I seemed to be doing OK. Took down maybe 1/4 of Korlic's health, but alas, Amp Damage + Malic's WW was too much for me and took me down real fast. About 5 deaths later, I decided to keep rerolling until I got no cursed guys. The moment that happened, I won. It was a pretty nice roll too. Noone was Cold/Light immune. After that, everything was downhill. Baal might as well just fold and just wait for this thread to pop up. None of the minions gave any trouble, though Bartuc killed Gulzar.

Overall, I liked this character, but then again zealot is my favourite build. I guess I'll recommend this build to fans of the zealot, and I won't recommend this build to people that don't like the zealot. It plays very much like a cookie cutter zealot build, the only twist being that you have to toggle between auras. Unlike a regular zealot, this guy gets 2 very good sources of elemental damage, as well as an unreliable source of physical damage (merc). As opposed to a zealot that would likely have uber pyhsical damage and minor elemental damage. The biggest disadvantage of this zealot is when cold immunes AND lit immunes charge you. You can only choose one aura, and since you're beside both types of immunities, you can't really target one or the other, so you're wasting tons of swings on the immune monster.

I got my SC sept of pretty much all cookie cutter builds, made my obligatory MF blizz sorc, etc. I even made a foray into HC, with some mixed results (a guardian, a trapsin in Act 5 hell, and a lot of level >70 ghosts). I still would only regard myself as a "casual" player, and haven't gone into the REAL mfing (my collection of TC87s is unimpressive), but I think I've come along way.

I reminisce because today I finally made a pat out of Raz. He has exponentially better gear than when he started, of course, but he turned out to be very fun and quite strong and safe. Since picking up where I left off in Act 1 NM, only had 1 death (of course in HC that would have been all it took... :sad2: ), which was to the FE explosion of a hell council boss that 1-shotted me while I was cursed. Got unattentive :undecided: . Here's the lowdown:

Skills: 20 Holy Shock, Resist Lightning, Holy Freeze, 6 Zeal, 4 Holy Shield, 8 Salvation.
If I had it to do over again, I would have dispersed skills slightly differently, but it's not horrible for a first char. HF ended up being kind of a lame backup without having much in the way of points to synergize it, although its crowd control is nice.

Stats without gear: 81 str, 90 dex, 296 vit

Crescent Moon PB (Pretty standard choice for a tesladin, lets you reach the 4 fpa zeal bp pretty easily, not to mention the nice -lit resist etc.)

For the CS I was having massive AR problems with the glimmers, so I switched in another angelic ring and those ghoulhide gloves or whatever that give +ED and AR vs. Undead.

Pre-CS I had been using Guardian Angel and Highlord's with dual Ravens and LoH, but I decided to make Treachery so that I could use the Angelics combo (as my AR was pathetic going into Act 5) and dracul's. Also, against my usual principles, I swapped my Might merc for a Blessed Aim one, which gave me over 9k AR all things considered. I think it was a good switch of gear and merc; I noticed I was killing things a lot faster, and the level 15 Fade from Treachery is just amazing. It was my first time using that armor, and let me tell you, I like it 😁

Hellforges were lame (Hel from Hell), but I did find Hellrack and Natalya's Mark!

The Story:

This project started just a few short weeks ago. I had a stash that was lookin real fat with runes and nothing to spend them on. I had just made a faith GMB for a bowazon and had also completed some other really crazy runewords like a 1.07 Eth Pride Thresher.

So I started looking for ideas. I'd just pat'ed a zealer and thought, why not use dual dreams instead of what I'm using now? Guillame's and HoZ - Damage and resist, traded for level 30 holy shock. But why stop there? Why not go all out? I'd seen the Auradin when looking around at basic builds to play. I stumbled across Clerv's PvM Auradin Guide and noticed some things that I thought could be done better due to the age of the guide. Clerv worried about Iron Maiden so he minimized phys damage.

The basic pieces to the build are a bit insane - Hand of Justice, Dragon, Dual Dream, and a Faith bow for the A1 Merc. 1 Cham, 3 Jahs, 2 Surs, and 2 Los. These runewords expensive, and also dream of course has highly variable rolls, like resistances that can roll between 10 and 25...

I wanted to make a character that wasn't just the run of the mill cookie cutter boring phase blade wielding build. PHASE BLADE. Everywhere. Not this character - I wanted to make a character that looked like a king, that wielded something else. Phase blade was straight up out of the picture, I wasn't making another grief look-a-like nobody character. I looked at the options, and why not a Pally scepter I thought? It can add skills! Hand of Justice is a 4 rune runeword, so that limits my scepter options to basically just a Caduceus. It can only drop in alvl85 areas. So I fired up my pit runner in hopes for a base. OH MAN how naive I was. I had 1 caduceus base drop in 4 hours, it was white, had no automods, and I decided I needed to adjust my strategy.

So I decided that I needed to start racking in 1.07 for a caduceus base. 1.07 is magical. Racks in 1.07 lower kurast can drop caducei! It took a long time, about 6 hours to just find a stable caduceus rack. That led to this crazy picture:

Only a few +skills will really benefit this auradin with the goals stated above. Only Zeal, Conviction, and Holy Shield will benefit the build's damage. Every point in zeal is of course free zeal damage, only hard points in sacrifice benefit zeal's damage otherwise. Every point towards conviction 25 frees up points towards other skills like hard points in sacrifice or salvation, meaning more damage. And holy shield is just helpful generally, it's saves stat points and skill points that could otherwise be spent in sacrifice or salvation.

I spent about 25 hours racking for a +3 Zeal +3 Conviction +3 Holy shield Caduceus which I believe should be able to theoretically drop. 9 potential skill points saved for the build. However, after about 5 hours of running this caduceus rack, I hadn't found anything near +9 skills, the best was +4 out of the skills I need. I can't explain how rare this occurrence is... These skills very rarely spawn AT ALL, let alone together. After about 25 hours of farming, the best I found was a +3 Conviction +2 Holy shield Caduceus. I settled, because if you'd have been me you would've done the same.

This item is the pride of my build - although it's nothing great, it's the heart and soul of my character:

The other bases/rolls:

The other items aren't as exciting. I looked at base options for dreams. The helmet people usually use for dream is either a demonhead or a diadem. Nothing suitable for a character like this. A king needs a crown. However, a Corona requires 174 str, ugh. I decided on a Grand Crown, which has respectable defense and only 103 str requirement - it got a decent roll:

The shield - had to go with a pally shield for resists of course. For high block % it's either a Sacred Targe or Sacred Rondache, so I went hunting for a 1.07 rack for farming for this base as well. I found a not-so-stable, but kinda-passable
Sacred Targe rack and ended up finding this +39 sacred targe:

The armor: Dragon doesn't have variable rolls so I wasn't worried. Decided on Archon Plate for the look and requirements:

Last item was the Faith Bow which I absolutely needed. All other merc options were just way worse. Fanaticism is too strong. I decided on a diamond bow for usability, an a1 merc can use it directly at 65, plus it's average damage and speed are great:

How Was It? Did it Pay Off?

It's neat but not really. It performs a lot like a normal Grief wielding zealer in practice, maybe a bit weaker, but maybe safer? /p1 hell is a breeze of course, aura damage does enough to actually kill things all the way through act 5, and the zeal damage is insane enough to 1 shot most mobs up wave 5 in throne of destruction. /p3 is basically the same, and /p8 takes a little extra time. /p8 Zeal still does great damage, but you're not blazing through any faster than a regular cookie cutter zealer.

It does do some extra stuff, of course - dual dreams means stuff is confused a lot, which provides a lot of crowd control, mobs are all attacking each other and that means safety for you and your merc. I never felt unsafe EVER for this build, which is one of the complaints I heard about it when I was reading through the few threads about it. It's an extremely safe build, but you must have good block.

This build is crazy awesome. You screen is blowing up at all times. You have hydras blasting everything, you have mobs confused attacking each other. You have life tap on stuff filling your health instantly. Your merc is reviving stuff with Faith. Conviction means you consistently hit without any investment in AR.

I ended up leveling to 67 at nightmare Eldritch, which means I could fully equip my items. On /p8 on nightmare, my auras were killing things in 2-3 pulses. I felt like a god. It meant I could play through the game in hell with my completed build. It was fun as hell..



Leveling - The Play through

I decided to fully twink out this playthrough because I like feeling strong. Level 1 I started with Khalim's Will - This item just can't be beat. You can make some weird maul with +%ED and -%reqs, but Khalim's will is just the best for any melee character, probably best for any character up till about level 8-12 - you one shot everything on /p8 all the way up to barracks in A1, and you'll be level 12+ by then anyways.

I leveled as an auradin all the way. I planned out all skill points and respecs ahead of time. Here's the general outline:

1-24 - Holy Fire + Zeal - I also had this planned out for max Holy Fire damage including the Resist fire for synergy so I'd maximize damage all the way to 24.

24-63 - Holy Shock + Synergy + Zeal - Also planned this out down to the point to maximize holy shock damage. Headstriker is the single greatest mid game item in the game. Equip at level 39 and you're good through the end of the game really.

63 - Respec to final build.

I wanted to give a special shout out to the Death's Disguise set pictured here:

Through some fancy work I was able to equip this at level 9, and it is the greatest melee twinking set OF ALL TIME. There's nothing else that can compare to the stats of this full set. Sigon's can suck it. What does Sigon's do for me? Nothing! NOTHING!! Angelic + Death's Disguise = the best. I dropped it in act 5 lvl 25 when I could equip some crazy fancy King's Grace Divine Scepter. /p8 1 shotting all the way with death's touch. That's it. USE THIS SET. USE HEADSTRIKER. PROFIT.

Overall - Normal I walked through on /p8.

Nightmare I walked through but dropped players settings around act 3 until act 5 where I leveled to 67 and completed my build in act 5, where I /p8 through all of act 5 one shotting literally everything.

Hell I could handle /p8 but not one shotting everything, dropped to /p3 or /p1 at times because I don't like struggling.




THE WRAP UP

Had fun. Will level this guy more. I did regret spending the runes for a minute or two, but after a while, what else do you spend them on.

I guess I should explain: This character, though accelerated through Nightmare in the course of an hour or two, did not actually have a Hell-capable weapon for much of his life. I believe he wielded a Bloodstump before, which was not going to cut it it Hell at all.
I had found the base weapon long ago, and liked it so much I stashed in away in ATMA, to gather dust until I could do something with it. Weeks later, while Countess running, I discovered a Mal rune, and it didn't take me long to figure out how to use it.
Oath was made in the Cryptic Sword you see before you, and it looked something like this:

I feel that the Cryptic Sword, besides looking helluva cool, makes him less cookie-cutter than a zerker. And since he is a Zealot, that is pretty hard to do.

This revitalized the character, and the prospect of getting to use it was motivation enough for joining MP games and pushing him into Hell Act II. But here, the host of the game left before Duriel was slain, and Praetorian was left to wander the sands of the Far Oasis, searching for the amulet and staff.
I give thanks to zarf and pwangsta, because due to their games I was able to get started again, and at level 61 the fun began.

As soon as the weapon was equipped, my maximum damage doubled, and, even though my minimum damage fell, I was butchering everything in my path.

He used Griswold's and Crow Caw for a while, since armor was not exactly found that would suit him. Since Holy Shield wasn't maxed yet, I wanted the defense of the Griswold's, but also the IAS of the Crow Caw. At long last, after many more Countess runs, and a trade from someone or other, the following made the character even faster at slaughtering:

I got rid of the stats on items with static stats to save space on the post and took out fingerprints etc for same reason. This gear is much diff from what i wore most of the rest of the game. This is due to the fact that once I got to pindle I decided to go back and run meph. Why not pindle instead of meph you ask? simple, I was dieing far more frequently than I liked. So Ive done about 1800 meph runs and in the process got some really sweet items. My MF setup was ptop guallame's, angelic ammy, angelic armor, 2x angelic rings, 39% chancies, the war travs and gheeds up there, upd goldwrap. My MF was 318% with all charms etc. I also had an ali baba on switch but found it much faster just to kill without switching over. At current he has gotten me to 78% of the grail, with 109 items to go.

Would have been nice if I would have gotten a better screenshot but I didnt. You can see my pansy merc just barely behind the pillar there. I used a Holy Freeze merc. I also admit that my gear choices could have been better but I was being ultra cautious because I didnt want to die a ton of times on the way to the throne room.

Other things of note:
Favorite Meph running weapon: Lacerator
I really like the chance to amp on this thing. And with crushing blow on g face he went down really fast. And let's not forget the fact that since im meleeing with it, I never have to repair it.

Weapon that sped the game up: Nord's Tenderizer
Once I found this off a dark one in the room before Hell Andy things really got a lot more fun. Up until then I really didnt have any decent weapon to speak of. I was using a aldur's rhythm part of the time, yeah, that bad i know.

Most memorable drop: (tie) Ist Rune and gheed's fortune
This one is close. Though I have to give the edge to gheed's because I havent actually done anything with the Ist yet. Though the Ist of course has an incredibly low chance of dropping. The HoZ would have made the list if I hadnt recently just found it. In my opinion, the shield that im using is probably better anyway. Much higher resists and really, how much faster will the HoZ help me kill stuff with the plus skills? Hommunculus just missed also, I didnt count that cause it doesnt have use with this guy. Though, Im lucky bastard when it comes to this cause it fell out of a basket.

This character had a lot of firsts. He was the first to get me anywhere past act 2 hell, and anywhere after that consequently. And its just icing that he got the best rune possible.

Character he found most annoying: OK's, obviously
A second might be stygian dolls but I didn't die nearly as often to those buggers.

Surprises: I didnt die once to hell diablo. In fact, since I was meleeing him, even when he lightening hosed me it didnt hurt. I think this is due to the fact that the weapon I was using had a shorter reach than how far he leaned outward to fire the thing. I was real up close and personal for this battle. Also, I only died once to the ancients in hell. One spawned FE and another cursed, talk about a deadly combo, and since Im still on the 1.10 patch this was a mod I thought could make it quite impossible, or at least really annoying.

Deaths: hahahaha, too many to count. I dont think Ill never be able to go HC cause ill prolly punch my monitor when i die.

What's next: I'll probably run meph until I run out of items I can reasonably expect to get from him, or I level up and then ill go run pindle again so i dont have to worry about exp loss.

And lastly, thanks goes out to all the SPF members that gave me help on this build. Most notably, Borlag, who answered some questions back in 2004 on my old zealot that led me to scrap him and create mr arthur here. HBeachBabe who I believe also answered some questions about my old character. jjscud, Hrus, Llathias, Asmodeous for your suggestions with HS. And to everyone else here, I probably would have given up on this game long ago if it werent for this forum's help. I apologize to those who's names I left out. Thanks to all those who have given me advice or steered me in the right direction for this game. I dont think I've ever played a game this long except for civ series and ff3. This PvM Paladin variant is based around the Sanctuary skill, and the use of items with the +% Damage to Undead mod. While the Undead Hunter is more than capable of defeating Baal in Hell, he takes refuge in places where the undead lie. I. Introduction

The underlying principle for this character stems from the Undead Hunter (or Kaizan) class for Dungeons & Dragons. While not a D&D player myself, I came across this particular class description while browsing the Internet trying to come up with a creative character idea for D2, and I immediately thought of the Paladin:

The Kaizan are feared for many reasons. Mostly the unwanted souls that unlive fear them because they do not pay homage to any god. Instead, they are endowed with special powers from a mysterious mystical source. Although they fear no evil the Kaizan are not blindly courageous. They only fear dying an unjust death. Honor is a special gift that can only be earned. Each Undead Hunter attains greatness thru equally great thought. Each Kaizan possesses general knowledge of undead and specific knowledge of the destruction of many special undead.

Paladins are a personal favorite, and IMO the most versatile characters in the game in terms of their ability to inflict a variety of damage types on their opponents. This particular build focuses on dealing damage to the undead by use of the Sanctuary aura, and certain specific items (see Gear Selection below). The Sanctuary aura "causes the Paladin to shine with an inner, holy light. This light is an anathema to the undead, summoned as they are through the machinations of the Prime Evils. The aura carries with it the essence of life and the strength and purity of the Paladin's convictions." Sounds like it fits the description, right? Plus, it looks damn cool :). See Section IV. below for further discussion of the skill.

II. Stat Placement
These are pretty standard for a Paladin, but I will get specific in terms of the strength required for the equipment I think best suits this build:

Strength (110+) - I calculated 110 as the base strength required in order to equip the gear listed below. In later levels, I found that I rarely was in health trouble, so I started pumping points into strength to boost my damage.
Dexterity -- Enough for max block
Vitality (220+) - Initially, my thoughts were to pump as many points into Vitality as I could spare. But with the great crowd control the Sanctuary aura provides, I stopped at around 235, and allocated more points to strength. Kaizan has only suffered one death, and it was to a pack of Oblivion Knights (grrrr IM). My suggestion is to obtain 1000+ life, but this may vary depending on whether you play HC or SC, as well as the role you choose for your Undead Hunter.
Energy -- None

III. Skill Placement
There are as many variants to the Undead Hunter as there are other auras in the Offensive skill tree. In terms of Patting' your character (if that is a goal), I would go with Fanaticism as a secondary skill. The skills for my character, Kaizan, are distributed as follows:

Target clvl: 83

Notes: The only synergy for Sanctuary is a boost in magic damage to the skill's knockback effect from Cleansing (7% per level). I do not feel this is worth the skill points, but you may disagree. I chose instead to max Zeal and Sacrifice as a compliment to Sanctuary (to deal with the non-undead), as well as for the boost in attack rating. You may choose to max Fanaticism instead, and spend only 10 points in Zeal. Also, I find Vigor, Cleansing, and Redemption to be very useful on any Paladin build, but you may wish to pump any remaining points elsewhere.

IV. About the Sanctuary Skill
The Sanctuary aura adds damage, and a knockback effect to the undead. It's important to that this skill does not work against super uniques (Pindleskin being the best example), and Act bosses. It does work however, against all normal undead creatures, Champions, and Minion bosses, which will be our primary targets. Also, this aura ignores physical immunities, which means undead monsters that are Immune to Physical or are Stone Skin won't be a problem.

+% Damage to Undead
As a disclaimer, it's impossible (in so far as I know) to determine what exact damage you are dealing to the undead. In other words, there's no damage range that shows up in your Character Screen that displays "Damage to Undead." From what I've gathered from the SPF, the +% Damage to Undead mod is applied like +% Enhanced Damage, which is against the base weapon damage. Thus, as a simple example, the +% Damage to Undead would work as follows:

Base weapon damage: 140-175
+% Damage to Undead: 100%
Damage Range to Undead: 280 - 350

This is just an example; the +% gets much higher than 100%, I assure you :). I will calculate the "estimated" damage range on my character in the section below. As previously stated, there is no guarantee this is accurate, all I can say is that Kaizan performs very well in certain high area levels on /players8.

Knockback:
The knockback effect is applied against all creatures within a certain radius (which increases coincidently with the skill level, similar to holy freeze), and is on a timer (~2 seconds). I'll be the first to admit, the knockback effect was somewhat annoying at first, but I can't emphasize enough how useful this skill is in terms of crowd control. If used correctly, the knockback effect allows you to engage one monster at a time, without worrying about getting swarmed by a large pack/minions/etc. Also, when fighting in tight areas (e.g. Crypt), it's very easy to pin a monster against a wall/barrel/chest, which makes your life even easier. In other words, don't get discouraged, IMO the positives of the knockback effect far outweigh the negatives.

V. Gear Selection
There are three pieces of equipment that I believe to be important for this character build, not only in terms of their usefulness, but because they fit the character's role very well:

Griswold's Set
In my opinion, this set was created specifically for this build. I'd like to believe that Griswold crafted this fine set of armory in anticipation of the very curse that would befall him. The story of Griswold (Undead), as Blizzard tells it:

After Diablo was slain in the catacombs beneath the town of Tristram, a grand celebration that lasted several days was held. The hero that defeated the Lord of Terror looked as if he had walked through Hell itself, and as the weeks passed, he kept his distance from the rest of the townsfolk and seemed to lapse into a dark, brooding depression. One day, he simply left. And shortly thereafter Tristram was attacked by legions of foul demons. While many of the townsfolk were merely slain, some were forced into cursed servitude.

The stout blacksmith Griswold was one of those who were bound past death to attend the desires of The Three. Wandering the town he once loved, he uses arcane powers and an unholy strength granted to his twisted body by Andariel to stop any from following the path of the Wanderer.


The stats on Griswold's set are, for lack of a better word, incredible. Wearing the entire set gives +3 to all skills and +2 to Defensive/Offensive auras and Combat Skills, as well as huge bonuses to Strength, Dexterity, Life, Hit Recovery, and Resistances. Socket the shield with 2 p-diamonds, and your resistances are set in Hell. In addition, the other items all have sockets, giving you flexibility with your character. And if that isn't enough to convince you, the weapon gives a whopping +250% Damage to Undead I have outfitted Kaizan as follows:

-Griswold's Redemption (EldEldEldEld) -- yup, that's right, who would have thought you'd ever being socketing an high-end item with an Eld. But with the runes, your Damage to Undead jumps up to 550%!! Not bad for the second easiest rune to find in the game.
-Griswold's Heart (3 x IAS jewel) -- IAS jewels in order to reach 4 frames
-Griswold's Valor (2 x IAS jewel) -- same as above
-Griswold's Honor (2 x p-diamond, 1 x IAS jewel) -- resistances, same as above

With the set-up above, you are at 68 to All Resistances in Hell (including Anya quest in all three difficulties), with 130% IAS (40 from weapon, 90 from jewels). Add a shimmering charm to get your resistances maxed, and an additional 15% IAS from Nosefaratu's to reach the 4 frame attack speed without fanaticism.

Ghoulhide Gloves
The ultimate gloves for an Undead Hunter. These bad boys give +% Damage to Undead (2.5 per level) and +Attack Rating against Undead (8 per level) based on character level. Throw in some hefty defense, mana leech and +20 to life, and you got yourself a mean pair of gloves for this build.

Seraph's Hymm
The only amulet that gives +% Damage to Undead (between 25-50%) and +AR against Undead (150-250), not to mention a mere +2 to all skills and +1-2 to Defensive Auras. Not too shabby.

Well, that leaves your belt, boots, and rings left, and there are many useful options here. Kaizan is equipped with Nosefaratu's Coil (LL, +Str, Slows Target, IAS to reach 4 frames), Goreriders (CB, DS), Ravenfrost (CBF, A/R) and a rare ring (+9 min damage, +105 AR, +7 all resists, 3%LL). The total stats for Kaizan, who is currently lvl 83, are:

Vit: 235 (235)
Energy: 15 (15)

Life: 1071
Mana: 192
All Resistances: 75
Attack Rating: 4260
Zeal damage: 1176-1399 (1444-1724 with Might merc)

Damage to Undead: 2496 - 3258 (Average 2877)

Bear in mind the stats above do not take into effect the increase to damage received from Strength, Zeal, and my merc's aura.

Unfortunately, this build is expensive as I've outlined it above. I believe this to be the best set-up for the character (although I'm open to suggestions); however, there are alternatives. If you cannot afford the Griswold set, perhaps the following would work:

Rune Master (5os)
Guardian Angel
Herald of Zakurum
Andariel's Visage

Also, for those who have access to the realm-only runewords, the Edge runeword (280% ED to Undead) is also an affordable option.

VI. Character Role
Ultimately, you can choose to play your Undead Hunter however you desire. I use Kaizan mainly as a rune-hunter, since he is very effective on /players8 in certain high-level areas (best examples being the Crypt and Mausoleum in Act I, which are undead infested). Whatever you choose, I think the Undead Hunter will make for a refreshing change in your collection of characters.

Baal went down to Ignis' big hurty stick, completing the Brethren project. My quest with Ignis proved what I already expected, which is that the Holy Fire aura isn't very good :laugh: . There are also alot of Fire Immunes in Hell difficulty level. Thus, the choice to go with the big 2-h Obedience Thresher. The rest of my equipment was set-up to compliment (DS, CB, etc.) the big physical damage of the Thresher:

Resistances were a problem in Hell, at least until Fade kicked in. My Holy-Freeze merc, who was my meat shield and only source of crowd-control, was equipped with a Reapers', Duriel Shell, and Vamp Gaze. Normal and Nightmare were played on /p8 entirely, but Hell turned out to be an exercise of humility (as my friend AJK so politely put it 😁 )...i played Acts I-II on /p3, then /p1 the rest of the way out. Died several times (too many to count), but a lot of that had to do with me wanting to finish up this project lol...too many things to do, not enough D2 hours in the day. No notable finds unfortunately. HF dropped Pul/Pul in NM and Hell.

Conclusions:
-I love zealots (still)
-If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Rift. Seeing him in action in Ancient Tunnels is a sight.
-Holy Frost & Holy Shock = lazerspewpewpewpewlazers omg pwnz
-Holy Fire = Retired Character

Pat #2 of 3 for the Brethren project in the books. Where to begin...you think I'd be tired of zealots by now, but I just can't get enough of this class. Onis performed very well right from the get go. Normal and Nightmare were played at /p8, and once CM came into play early in Act II NM, things became much easier. Hell was played entirely on /p5, and I recorded one death at the hands of what seemed to be 1,000 little critters in the Flayer Jungle lol. No IM deaths I'm happy to report, although my merc bit the dust quite a few times. Onis was very good at doing what a Tesladin is designed to do, which is dealing out an incredible amount of lightning damage quickly. Anything not immune to lightning died fast, however LI's proved to be difficult at times, especially with monsters with high physical defense. Fanaticism and a hefty dose of my merc was my best solution :). Chaos Sanctuary proved to be the most difficult area to clear, mainly due to constant dodging of IM coupled with mana draining and LI wraiths. No real big problems in Act V. Good roll on Ancients, but had to Save + Exit a couple of times on the way to Baal's throne (due to OK's). Baal dropped an Arioc's Needle (+3). Aside from this, other notable finds along the way included a +220/+17 Ravenfrost, and a nice little dual leech ring. HF was poop (Sol in NM, Ko in Hell). Final equipment:

Hard to compare to Rift, since both were very effective at dishing out their respective element, although Rift had the edge in terms of versatility. Both shall make good r00n hunters I reckon. Two down, and only Ignis left...I've been looking forward to playing him since the beginning of this. But it's 2:05am here in the states, and I'm done for the night 👋 .

I've always considered it a bit odd the way that the D2 experience tends to swing from one extreme to the other. One moment you're an unstoppable juggernaut of destruction, the next you're gloam fodder. This build was a bit like that, though most of the time it was certainly the former rather than the latter.

Normal and Nightmare, on /P8, proved no contest really. I combatted Iron Maiden in the Chaos Sanc by using the old Necro Wand trick (wield a Necromancer's wand with piddly physical damage and good elemental damage and basically kill everything with Fire + Cold). Even NM Ancients on /P8 (deliberately for once) didn't really prove a challenge.

Then I reached Hell Chaos Sanc and it all went pear shaped. The necro wand trick was no use because of high mob HP and cold immunes, so after dying 3 or 4 times in a row trying to melee it by just trying to watch out for IM and stop swinging in time, I gave up and switched to a Buriza, drawing Chaos Knights out one or two at a time and very slowly twanging them to death. It took over an hour. I shouted, I cursed and swore, I cried like a little girl. I thought it would never be over. When I finally took them all out and switched back to melee weapons, I killed Diablo himself in about 8 seconds. Bah!

Other than Chaos Knights, this build went through most things like a hot knife through butter. Don't really use him much now since he doesn't have much MF potential but he was fun to play with (almost) all the way through.

Nothing new to report, just a standard zealot I've been wanting to play since I got the sword. Pretty expensive to repair, but the gheeds+edge combo proved to be useful
