Patriarch Achilles, Fanatic Zealot

Hello everybody!

This is my 2nd pat/mat.His name is Achilles (I love mythology & LZ).
He was very easy to play and he reached to the end very fast.
He was twinked, played on p8 from beginning to act V in Hell.
I started with defiance insted might aura and use signon set.
When I got fanatacism everything went faster.

So skills are standard:
20 zeal
20 Sacrifice
20 holy shield
20 fanaticism
1 vengeance
1 sanctuary
1 prereaq.
rest in defiance

He has got +7 to all skills and +5 to combat skills (=+12 to combat)

My gear is:

HoZ (PDiamond)
Andy visage (ral)
Durres rw body armor
Raven frost ring
B-KWB ring
Tearhaunch graves
Credendum mithril coil
Hand of blessed light (upped and shael)
Dracul`s grasp gloves
Amulet with +2 combat skills and +11 to all resistance

Merc is NM Act II might merc.I played with Normal Act II Offensive merc but I remembered to change him when I was close
to the end (Act V Hell) LOL.

Merc gear:
Doom cryptic axe
Tal rasha`s mask
Boneflesh templar coat (upped)

Hellforge hates me as always - Pul rune on hell diff.

I found few uniques with him although he has 42% better chance to MF.
But the best drop he had is ber rune.I was surprised and happy when I saw it.
Hope I will get more of them.

Future plans:

- max resistance
- make grief ?
- make call to arms

Thank you for reading, and pls tell me your opinion .
Also, can he be good for run anything ?

Patriarch HolySword

OK, I should have done this earlier, but after rolling the perfect Durance Map, I was so obsessed with Meph running and I kinda forgot the missions in Act 5.

So I decided to join the Mini-MFO hosted by jjscud, since the target is Baal, I think this might be the best character I have that can handle him and Lister&Co. (I only have 3 pats so far including this one, the other two being trapsin and wind druid, they kill Baal slowly) due to his high damage against demons (See his gears below to find out why). BTW This is the first time I ever join events on the SPF forum. Wish me luck friends. 😁

As you can imagine, the merc will keep dying, I don't really need a merc anyway, I will revive her when she is needed (Mainly use her to kill the PI wraiths in Arcane Sanctuary), but most of the time I let her stay dead.

So in Hell, I will have 90% resist to all.

Since the WSK map really sucks, I will try to roll a better map so that I can stand a chance in the Mini-MFO, but that means I will lose the perfect Durance Map :undecided: . I hope its worth it. I will also stockpile some MF charms and give him my BEST 31%MF Gheed in order to push his MF up to the 100s. A Naj Puzzler which will grant him the ability to teleport shall also help.

Why a Schaeferdin?

Maxamillian was originally created way back in a time known as V1.09. When it came to the best one handed weapons for zealots, your choices where limited to rune words such as Silence, Fury or unique’s such as Baranar’s star, Head striker, Butcher’s Pupil and so on. Schaefer’s Hammer was the king of the one handed hitters back then. When V1.10 was released, I remade Maxamillian to make the best use of the new synergy skills. The original Maxamillian was a hybrid Zealot/Tesladin with a Light sabre on the weapon switch. Once the new character was made, I transferred the entire equipment set up over and found that he was easily able to solo player at players 8 setting easily so I resolved to continue improving Maxamillian with the new items that V1.10 had introduced into the game.

Is there a story behind the name Maxamillian?

Sure is. One of the original creators of the game Diablo and Diablo 2/LoD was Max Schaefer who the weapon was named after. It seemed appropriate to name my schaeferdin Max, but it did seem a bit short and not really suitable to the noble paladin, so I “stretched” the name out a bit, considering Maxamillian or Maximus. I went with Maxamillian as this was the same name as the robot from Disney’s the black hole movie. If you have seen the movie, the robot Maxamillian appears as a full armor suit, breast plate, Helm, leggings, the whole lot, which seemed fitting to me for a Paladin who would have a huge defense.

Isn’t there other Zealot builds better than the Schaeferdin?

I hear this question a bit when people see the sort of gear Maxamillian has and they ask why not put all that effort towards some other zealot build? When it comes to pure melee damage, I agree that an Ethereal Oath, Death, BotD or a Grief phase blade wielding Zealot will have a higher damage out put than what maxamillian has. But none of these weapons have the crowd damaging power of the chance to cast static field. With the high speed of a 8/4 frame zeal, static field from Schaefer’s will occur once per second on average ensuring that any monster in melee range that is not lightning immune, will be at half hit points. In high players X settings, this benefit is huge. Timed Hell Baal runs on players 8 of 5 minutes per run average help prove the benefit of the chance to cast static field. Few other melee builds can either match or beat the 5 minute mark. Yet Maxamillian does it easily and safely with the only threat being Iron maiden casting Oblivion Knights, the usual scourge of all melee builds. Hell Cow farm or the ancients on players 8 are also fun to do rather than a threat.

What about maxamillian’s weapon swap?

For a while I wondered what to do with his weapon swap. I have had a demon limb prior mainly for the attack rating benefit, but with a rating already over 10,800, there was little point of that. With so much IAS on maxamillian, then swinging the other unique Legendry mallet, Stone Crusher at 8/4 fps zeal is quite easy and gives a good damage range of 4,020-5,314 plus an additional 425 approx hidden damage from the weapons “damage + xx”. With the extra 40% crushing blow you have a great tool for taking big hit point bosses down such as Baal on players 8. Start with the Schaefer’s for the first half of the bosses life bar, then swap the stone crusher in to finish. It works quite well.
To make that possible, I used a 4 socket sacred targe shield with two resistance (light & cold) jewels of fervor, and Eld rune to bump the blocking chance up and a silver jewel (59 to AR) of fervor. The Sone crusher itself is socketed with a 40% ED ruby jewel.

So you have had help along the way?

Yep. I have a few people to thank.
- Firstly Hakai no tenshi. Well known creator of ATMA, provided the very first schaefers hammer back in v1.09.
- Ribgriller provided the 129% ed schaefers Maxamillian now uses today.
- Eric Xanthu for the weapon switch stone crusher.
- Pancakeman and omgwtfbbqpwned for both aurolic jewels of fervor.
- Jaedhann and AJK combined forces for the 40% ed/15% ias jewel in the schaefers.
- Durfbarian for the beer drinking songs and intoxicated inspirations!

And many other players and traders who have helped over the years.

So what now for the character?

Well, no character is ever perfect. I’ll always be seeking the perfect raven frost, Herald of Zakarum, String of ears etc. Firstly, It is into the throne room to stream line those Baal players 8 runs times. I hope to crack the 5 minute average mark. So far it looks very promising.
Long term, well there is only one thing really for Maxamillian to accomplish after that and that is level 99. Hard enough for Hammerdins, Spell chucking sorceress’s and fishymancers. But a pure melee build? Yeah. Very rarely done. But I think Maxamillian is up to the task. As I said. I am working on those hell baal run times. Wish me luck!

Comments

Right from the start, I expected a two handed, shieldless zealot to be as fragile as a two handed avenger. What a difference an uninteruptable attack like Zeal makes. With all that damage being thrown about backed with the uber leeching of dracul’s gloves, This zealot was surprisingly survivable even with generous usage the players x command. Deaths where unavoidable however. When Sir stuart was surrounded and smashing away at leechables, he was next to invincible. But, when attacking non leechables such as skeletons well his shieldless defense and low life undermined him time and again forcing a lot of pot drinking during game play. The usual enemies of melee builds put their efforts in as well to send this paladin crashing to the ground, exploding dolls, IM curse casting oblivion knights and el mass red ball tossing ex wives. Cheery bunch they where.

Normal and nightmare difficulties and even Hell up to act 4 where easy going with only one death in act 3 hell. But once I stepped into the chaos sanctuary I knew that record was going to be tarnished. I started out trying to use normal attack to prevent mid zeal string IM deaths, but the very first death occured within sight of the entrance so I gave up trying to pussy foot my way thru the place, ran away and leveled up to 84, then charge head long into the fray casting town portals often and picking up Sir stuarts corpes a further 4 times. As a reward for all that exp loss, Diablo himself went down in about 10 seconds flat.
Act 5 was interesting as well. 80% lightning resistance did a good job of keeping sir stuart alive against gloams, along with red & purple pots by the box load. But with little or no magic damage damage, the el mass red ball attacks tore my virtuous paladin to shreds in short order. Anya had quite a wait that day for her rescuing knight in shining armor. The throne room was loaded with fast moving little white bombs which is where sir stuarts huge damage proved his undoing buy killing three of the little wretches with a single zeal string. Smack, boom, smack, boom, thud. Lucky I cleared the path from the TP I cast at the entrance.
Baal's five waves went down in short order, surprisingly. Ventnar and lister both surrounded Sir stuart, expecting easy pickings of this shieldless paladin, only to be el mass life tapped cursed and lopped into shishkebarb chunks el pronto. Baal put up a bit of a struggle, hiding behind his 55% blocking chance against the huge attack rating onslaught, but the end was near. No way was I letting that old bag of bones stand in sir stuarts way to patriarchdom.

Thru it all I had a ball playing this zealot. You can’t argue with all that damage mixed in with a decent serving of crushing blow and deadly strike. Sir stuart never lacked for damage, that’s for sure. More life would have helped a lot, guess a Call to arms would have been a good choice of weapons swap.
But I enjoyed the grandfather weapon swap. I used it more than the rare balrog. The attack rating was more than enough and the extra life was a bonus coming in handy many a time and you can’t argue with an 11 kay max damage.
Other weapons I tried during hell difficulty where a doom bringer, Oath champion sword and even an old silence colossus blade I had laying around from my v1.09 days. Basically, if it was a two handed sword and did decent damage, Sir stuart used it to chop monsters into tiny little giblets at an alarming rate though I imagine the fortitude armor had a bit to do with that.

One of my aims with this character was to create an Attack rating god. With over 18 kay, I think I managed that quite nicely. Imagine what the figures would have looked like with an Metal grid amulet or angelic set trick. Yeeeeikes! Chance to hit Hell Baal of 79% was good enough however as it was. Once I had finished the basic build skill points wise, I had a bit of a dilemna of where to spend the extra points. Eventually I spent these on Vigor and redemption which made a lot of sense given how often I used them. Redemption really tears pindleskin's cronies up before they even get up and also leaves Nilathak nothing to blow up in your face just to name a couple of area's where redemption proved it's worth.

Find wise, well not much I have to say. A shadow Killer and crappy Io rune from the hell forge. Most of the few greens/golds I saw stayed on the ground. A couple of reasonable charms, one jewel and a some mid range runes like Hel & Sol pretty much topped out sir stuarts magic find career.

Patriarch ColdTouch, and a goodbye

I patted my frost zeolt a few days ago - initially he was completely untwinked, until he reached about atc 2 hell, and his kill speed slowed greatly. At that point, i lost interest in him, until i found an almost perfect Heavens Light (294ED, 2 sox, +3 skills). At that point i thought i'd throw on lots of cool gear i had found with my mf skellimancer and see how hard p7 hell really was!

He was insanely good, and attacked insanely fast. He plowed through p7 hell acts 1-3 and then this was reduced to abt p5 for the final acts. Bosses dropped in under 10 seconds due to 83% CB, 30%DS, 75% block, 15% DR and a 6 frame attack (i socketed two jewels to reach a 5 frame attack AFTER i had patted him  ). Resists were around 90, 56, 90 and 49 --> only POISON seemed to hurt me!

ps ancients went down in under 30s. The S/S guy was down to less than 50% right off the bat, and the others fell in turn, though i noticed the leap attack dude, is REALLY hard to hit - he must have some crazy defence!

Hellforge:
NM: Um (Yeah, baby!)
Hell: Hel (NOOO, baby!)

He did not die a single time before achieving patriarch, but died in a subsequent run in 1 hit from an Assailant minion --> i still find it hard to believe, i wasnt cursed or anything, he did 1300 in a single blow  Of course, being unused to...dying :afro: ...i had no means of getting back my body (gogo fists of cold!) and had to S&E.

In act 2 of a vampire boss, he found a verdungos! (at the ttime he had 6mf  )

Patriarch Sundan

Well, I collected some wealth during the last two years, and finally made one of these chars with top level equipment ... not runewords like eBotd, but some of the more rare unique items.

So here is Sundan, the fanatic zealot:

Character name : Sundan
Character type : Paladin
Character level : 84
Character exp : 987566144

Strength : 111
Energy : 15
Dexterity : 111
Vitality : 268
Stat Points Rem : 10
Skill Points Rem: 6

Life : 1113 / 1010
Mana : 198 / 139
Stamina : 435 / 415

Resists are 75/75/85/85, skills are the usual 20 sacrifice, 20 zeal, 20 holy shield, 20 fanaticism and some more for prereqs. 6 points are unspent, and I really don't know where to place these.

Equip:

Weapon: Stormlash
Helm: Andariels Visage
Armour: Skullder's ire (PTopaz)
Boots: Goblin Toe (I have Gore Riders, but I prefer more CB over some critical... not that it really matters with this char)
Belt: Thundergod's Vigor
Gloves: Dracul's Grasp
Rings: Nagelring, Ravenfrost
Ammy:
Grim Emblem
Amulet
Required Level: 40
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 86
Fingerprint: 0x244e1fe3

7% Damage Taken Goes to Mana

Shield:
Gemmed Superior Heraldic Shield
Defense: 21
Chance to Block: 50%
Smite Damage: 3 to 9
Durability: 45 of 46
(Paladin Only)
Required Strength: 40
Required Level: 18
Item Version: 1.10+ Expansion
Item Level: 82
Fingerprint: 0xf725392d
All Resistances +120
Increase Maximum Durability 15%
Socketed (4: 4 used) (4x PTopaz)

Charms: assorted resists and extra damage

Well, I never had such few problems with hell ancients (rerolled once because of fanat aura) and Baal as with this char. Gloams aren't a threat either, I just run up to them and smack them, even boss packs (unless they have conviction, I guess). I had OKs on WSK 3, handled them by running towards them and whack whack whack ... they didn't get a chance to cast IM. This char is the first one I feel being able to do Baal runs.

Patriarch Zobomir, Conviction Zealot/Ranger

#1 in my use-the-elite-weapons project. I blame the MFO: picking up all these items and ID'ing it made me think they deserved their pride of place in somewhat unusual builds. First up: Gimmershred. Massive elemental damage goes well with conviction.

Progression

Act 1 normal was with a fire rogue and Holy Fire. In acts 2 and 3, Zobomir was the walking aura, with a +3 might scepter, while Leheras (prayer) did the killing. Act 4: lightning mage + elemental damage charms + low level conviction. Between clvl 38 and 42, Aldur's Rhythm (yes, the weapon) socketed with 3 PTopazes and Tiamat's Rebuke were twinked in, and were used until clvl 70, when Gimmershred was brought in. Final gear was equipped at clvl 77.

Thoughts

- I know, lightning and poison resists are a bit on the low side. But it's nothing one can't overcome with careful play ;)
- Game plan was simple: run into mobs and zeal away. Throw used in OK country and to bring down ranged attackers.
- The only difficult monsters were Hell Witches. Amp + ranged + physical damage was what it took to give this guy trouble
- Frenzytaurs: Meh. Extra Strong, Extra Fast frenzytaurs: ok, wake up. Gloams: Ha ha ha ha ha ...
- Baal is annoying
- Hell was played safe and steady, but he had 5 deaths in nightmare. Don't ask.
- Switch weapon used to shut down bosses
- The lightning wolf's damage was steady, but not spectacular. He took down Korlic almost entirely by himself (I was zealing away with the General's Flail without realising it) The lightning attack puts monsters in hit recovery. The charged bolts are a little weak, but still quite powerful when used on a big crowd. It takes a while to learn to position him. He moves around a lot, often into trouble. I tried gambling a FRW/FCR circlet for him, no luck. He survives well when I tank, but ranged monsters = pwnage. I left him for dead in a couple of areas in act 5. On the whole, he died less than the average act 2 town guard.
- Decided not to upgrade Guardian Angel to elite. The runes are better used elsewhere.
- I think this can be done with 1 point in Zeal, 1 point in conviction and no points anywhere else.
- Yes, he's twinked. Sue me.

Thanks for reading!

Edit: Credit where it's due: idea borrowed from sir_poopsalot's Gimmernator.

Patriarch Judas, a mostly-unskilled Astreon's Fanatic Zealot

Patriarch Judas, level 80 Fanatic Zealot

Prologue

"Teach me to zeal."

The teacher's heart gladdened. Something good might come out of impatient young Judas, after all. He collected his mind and proceeded to instruct his new pupil on the arcane arts of the paladins. Not two minutes after he started, however, he was interrupted by an unexpected "Thank you!" from the student.

"Wait, there's more, much more. You've only just begun", as the ward was about to leave.
"Thanks, but I've learnt all I need to know."

Sigh. Kids these days.

The goal

Melee builds in D2 are generally considered to have been given the short shrift, and they tend to be very gear dependent. I've seen a few patriarchs in these forums by those new to the game with seriously misplaced skill points, yet they manage to complete the game. Just how skill-independent are melee builds? I proceed to find out.

Random Thoughts

Worked out better than I expected. AR calculations came out to around 3000, somehow became 6000+ by the time I equipped everything.

Reaper's Toll is a seriously haxxor item. Between decrepify, slow (from Astreon's) and Holy Freeze, we could shut down everything. Chalan could tank Frenzytaur boss packs.

Rockstopper would have been a better choice than Vampire Gaze. Chalan had big problems against elemental damage.

Ancients were killed on the first attempt, despite two of them being cursed.

No IM solution. Two of my three deaths were due to IM -- one in nightmare WSK, another in Hell Throne of Destruction. I've seen a couple of guides suggest Vengeance as an IM solution. Good luck with that ... physical damage is high enough to kill yourself. I used Conversion extensively in IM areas, but even that does physical damage. Doesn't make any sense ... I'm trying to get the monster over to my side, why would I want to damage it? But Conversion's damage was low enough not to be a 1-hit kill if the Fanaticism aura was turned off, and I used it to take the heat off Chalan.

The other death came from a group that included Black Souls, Horadrim Ancients and a Conviction LE lightning mage boss. I was dead before I even saw the aura. Recovering the body and cleaning up afterwards wasn't difficult as I realized it must have been a conviction aura that caused the sudden death.

Thanks for reading!

EDIT: Aw, shoot. Wrong forum. Could a moderator please move it to the right place? Thanks.

Patriarch Rayden, tesladin

Another one of my toons beat the game. This time it's patriarch Rayden. He's a pure tesladin unlike Xdeathfire's recent hybrid. I think the name is familiar to a lot of people. For those that don't know. It's from the game mortal combat. His special moves also used lightning, hence the name.

Charms: 3x offensive skillers, 1x shimmering gc (14%), some resist sc's.

He's accompagnied by a holy freeze merc using tal mask, duriel's shell and an obedience gp (non-eth)

Gameplay:
Started heavily twinked as usual. Got pleasantly surprised when i could equip my crescent moon. My twinking weapon dit about the same max physical damage and even had some higher minimum damage so i wasn't to optimistic. But the -lightningresistance made a big difference (and some other good mods on the weapon too). Only real problem was a lack of leech which was solved when i hit lvl 76 when i could equip my dracs.
I expected to have trouble with LI's but that wasn't as bad as i feared. Using some decent CB myself and also some on my merc made short work of most of them. When there were only a few i didn't even bother switching aura's. Did have one or two areas where almost everything was LI so then i switched to might.
Another thing a was kinda worried about was the low minimum (lightning)damage but luckily i hardly noticed that. With zeal you hit so much and quick that even if one or two hits have low damage, there's still enough damage done. Especially if the static and/or CB triggers.
Real impressive parts were the killing of Izual and Diablo. Both high hitpoint monsters. I nearly killed Izual in 3 zealcycles. Had a combat shrine here so nearly every hit landed. And also Big D went down in about 5 seconds (no shrines here).
Ancients were no trouble at all. They were easily divided. Took out the leaper while my merc kept mr whirly busy. Then helped him take out that one. So then only Madawc (sp?) was left. Since he was LI it took a bit longer but hardly any trouble at all. The entire fight took 2 super healing pots to keep my merc alive and none for myself (and the lifetap didn't even trigger).
Got myself killed in the throneroom because of IM. Was trying to kill one of those horadrim ancients so they didn't keep ressurecting the knights. Was watching for two of them if they were casting spells (were busy with my merc so no harm for me). But i didn't notice the 3rd on the edge of my screen until it was to late.

This guy wasn't the luckiest in terms of items. I can't remember one good find. But he more than made up for it at the HF with a gul (ko in NM iirc). It was my first rune above mal (and maybe even above um) in the last dozen forges i did. So it seems the curse is finally broken.

Some final thoughts (and questions):
- The damage output was better then expected. Though i suspect the -35% enemy LR had something to do with that. But also LI's were less a problem then anticipated at first.
- On that subject. I was wondering before i started this character how good this RW would do on a lightsorc (in a crystal sword for low reqs). After using the RW on this char i'm even more intrigued by it. I'm sure some of you have tried something like this. How did that work out?
- My next point will go into maxing sacrifice. After that i'm not sure if i should put points in a synergy to up my damage or spare a few points to get fanatism as a switch aura instead of might. Anyone know if it would be worth the points to get there (2 as pre-req and 1 for the aura itself)?
- Not sure what my next project will be. I'd like to try the holy freeze variant now. Only problem is i keep all my chars fully equiped so i'd have to find a ravenfrost first. So maybe i'll finish my untwinked HC fishy (not sure if i'll post a threat for such a common char), maybe rebuild my goldfinder or finish my currently parked fire druid. I just don't know. Possibly i just get an idea and it's an entirly different char. Who knows (ideas are always welcome).
- After a quick count my .11 number is: 28 pat/mats, 1 guardian and 2 or 3 rebuilds. So thats 31 or 32 chars to beat the game in 1.11. If i'd count earlier versions that would most likely double (or maybe even more then that). This is getting ridiculous even for me 😁 .

Duress (Loricated Mail)

Thoughts and remarks:

- Quite simple character to play, really. Zeal + Holy Shock and … Go!
- Playing him was not very difficult, but it wasn’t a breeze either. Lightning immunes were of course problem, but I expected much, much worse.
- Merc died a lot in Act V Hell, but his damage was quite good.
- Delirium was a life saver! A really great runeword for this build or at least for my current gear set-up.
- This build is somewhat on the cheaper side and I know there is a LOT of stuff to improve. But the build is quite strong and doable even without high end uniques or runewords (rune-wise it costs 2 Um’s, a Mal and an Ist). But I can imagine that with proper high end gear, he would be a thing to behold.
- At some point in the future I’d like to experiment with runeword Dream on him. But at the moment that’s only wishful thinking.
- Deaths: can’t remember. Don’t think so. But a lot of close calls.
- Finds: can’t remember either. Nothing special, that’s for sure.
- Future plans: perhaps do some Pit runs for fun and I’d like to level him to at least level 85 … Other that that – I think I’ll retire him.

Thanks for reading ;)

Notable finds:
Rockstopper x2
If I found anything else worth noting, I can't recall
NM Hellforge: Fal
Hell Hellforge: Pul

I put too much in strength, as I was originally planning on using Baranar's Star and forgot about the +strength on Guillaume's, and wasn't planning on getting Dracul's Grasp. Poor planning on my part, but I'm not too worried.

Gameplay:
Not too many surprises or tricks. The general strategy was to hold down shift and the mouse until everything was dead, occasionally repositioning myself to counter range 1 Zeal bug. Against enemies I didn't want attacking me (such as cursed uniques, frenzytaurs, etc) or enemies I particularly dislike for various reasons (such as vampires, archers, casters) I would smite them several times until I felt they had been duly punished for being such pernicious nuisances, and then proceed to Zeal away. Physical immunes were seldom in normal and nightmare, and so, not much cause for concern. In hell, though, their frequency inspired me to make a Passion sword for the +1 to berserk. I used this once all other non-IP monsters had been dispatched. It works well enough, and I found it quite fun to use. This strategy work from Normal through Hell.

I played Normal and Nightmare on /p4, and beat all bosses on /p8 just to make myself feel important. I played Hell on /p3 until latter Act 5, where I dropped to /p2. I still beat all act bosses on /p8. I suppose I could have stayed at /p3, but I wanted to Patriarch him already and get back to my homework.

Through Normal, I used Hellplauge. This is an amazing sword, and I plan on using it for all melee based builds I have in the future. In Nightmare, I switched to Ginther's Rift, which I used until Act 5 NM, when I found Baezil's Vortex doing a bloody run. I then used Frostwind, and finally traded for a Nord's, which I used to finish the latter part of Hell.

Normal and Nightmare were easy, as was most of Hell, and nothing exciting happened here, really. The Hell Ancients were a disappointment. I didn't even drink a single potion. My act 2 moron survived, tanking both Talic and Madawc while I pummeled Korlic. I don't even remember what mods they all had they died so fast. I remember Talic had Stone Skin and Teleport...sigh (please Talic, don't teleport, oh the horror!)

I had several fun battles in the World Stone Keep levels 2 and 3. Level two spawned with Faithful and Hierophant champion packs, which made for a long battle, with many blizzards and lightning bolts. They all fell before Dullahan's holy wrath. Level three spawned with Black Souls and Horadrim Ancients. I refused to stall my battle and transfer a Thundergods Vigor. There was undead to smite. One alcove was a particular nightmare, infested with a pack of regular black souls, a champion pack of black souls, and a unique pack of black souls. A sinister grin spread across Dullahan's face, and he charged into battle, guzzling super healing potions and the occasional Full Rejuvenation. One by one, though, the corrupted souls were banished from the mortal realm. I then made my march for Baal, undeterred by his pitiful attempts to delay his inevitable demise. Not even might enchanted Minions of Destruction gave me pause. Though Baal, the cowardly demon, tried to flee, he feel in a gory splendor, and so ended the last of the three.

What's next?:
Dullahan is currently running Pindleskin, and doing quite well. I would like a better weapon for him, but I don't know what. The highest rune I posses is a Pul, so no runewords yet, and I don't have anything nearly good enough to trade for an Asteron's, or something of the like.

My next project is a 2h Frost Zealot. After reading Nightfish's most recent (I think) Guardian, I'm thinking of trying to get some DR items and put some Sol runes where I can. Any gear suggestions for a 2h frostie? Tentative gear:
Helm: Kira's
Weapon: Ribcracker
Armor: Smoke, Iron Pelt, Glad. Bane?
Gloves: Cleglaws, Drac's?
Belt: String, Verdungo's, Nosferatu's?
Boots: ?
Rings: Raven/Angelic
Ammy: Angelic

Thanks for reading. 👋

Faith is stronger than any armor...

In the realm of Sanctuary there lies a temple of devout Paladins, secluded and secretive, which practice a devout and rigid adherence to the tenets of the Light. Their numbers are few, for only the most zealous of individuals are chosen to join this reverent conclave.

All of their efforts and strengths are pledged to banishing the undead and smiting the chaotic powers of darkness. They are heedless to the harms their own bodies may endure in their quest against the Prime Evils, for war to them is Holy, and death an escape from the disease that is mortal life. Desiring only to inflict Holy Wrath on their foes, they wield mauls, massive axes, and far-reaching swords with which to cleave and bludgeon their adversaries. Unlike their kin who carry shields and imbue them with Holy magiks to deflect blows, these Paladins accept whatever pains may be inflicted upon them, stoically, taking satisfaction that great retribution will be exacted upon their enemies in due course.

Armor: Gloom Archon Plate
Gloves: Cleglaws Pincers
Belt: Nosferatu's Coil
Boots: Tearhaunch
Rings: Ravenfrost and Angelic
Amulet: Angelic
Weapon II: Bone wand of Life Tap

Charms: I haven't mentioned this in my last two Patriarch threads, but I am a packrat, and my backpack is always full with charms. Every square has a charm. BoneSnappper carried with him plenty of Resistance charms, +life charms, and some max damage/ar charms.

Merc gear:
Tals Helm
3xShael Hone Sundan
Ethereal Superior Boneweave armor. (I originally was going to socket this and put 4 sol runes in it. I never found any Sol runes, so this never happened)

Finds:
BoneSnapper was a very lucky character. He had 0mf, but still managed to find many uniques, sets, and rares. Of note, he found:
Gimmershred
Hone Sundan
Shadow Disciplines skiller
Bow and Crossbow skiller
Um rune

NM Hellforge: Pul
Hell Hellforge: Gul :jig:

The Pul and Um he found were used to make the Gloom. My Hammerdin found another Pul off the Council, with which I upgraded the Ribcracker. I have no use for the Gul as of yet.

Progress:
Normal: /players 8
NM: /players 5
Hell: /players 3**
Alas, Paladins spawn with a shield. BoneSnapper needed not such things. Casting it on the ground was his act. That was the first and last time he bore a shield. He killed some zombies and fallen before earning enough gold for a large axe. Then it was hewing demons and undead down in one fell stroke. I made good use of Sacrifice early on. I actually used it more than Zeal until NM. At level 24 BoneSnapper had gained enough skill and strength to equip the most fearsome of all weapons, Bonesnap.

*sidenote* Finding the Bonesnap maul was the inspiration for this build, and it is one of my favorite weapons. Everything about this item is amazing. Huge damage, 40% crushing blow, resistances, and it just looks cool.

With Bonesnap, everything in Normal is a one hit kill. Even bosses crumple under its awesome might. Come to think of it, most everything in NM is a one hit kill with Bonesnap as well. I didn't equip Ribcracker until late NM, and then I upgraded it before entering Hell.

I imagined Hell was going to be difficult, but it wasn't nearly as hard as I though. With the amount of damage I was dealing out, along with all of the slow, I barely took any damage. Hell took a while, nonetheless, but mostly because I have been busy with school lately. Only latter act 5 proved a problem, with frenzytaurs, Serpent Magi, and Sirens forcing me to proceed carefully.

Few deaths I am happy to report. One against IM, and a few more here and there because I didn't feel like using a full rejuvi. The Ancients were easy, and I didn't need to reroll them. I cast Life Tap and smacked Korlic. He was FE, which almost killed me, but not quite. Madawc was next. He had Holy Shock. I laugh at your Holy Shock, and you must die. Hazade tanked Talic and nearly defeated him himself. I stole that glory from him, though, and killed the last ancient to death.

**I went /players 1 in the Frozen River. It spawned with Sirens and Serpent Magi, and they drained my life orb faster than I was comfortable with.

Thoughts:
To be honest, I really didn't miss a shield. A large amount of slow target is a worthy substitute. I ran into a few areas in which a shield might have helped, but I doubt very much. Even my cookie-cutter Fanatic Zealot would have trouble with extra fast, extra strong Frenzytaurs with Fanatacism.

Slow target works wonders. I had slow 54% from Holy Freeze, and 35% from items. I'm not sure how the two different slow sources work, but regardless, monsters move at stop motion speeds, and you can easily step aside to avoid their blows entirely. Archers fire where you were five seconds ago, and gloams just sit there dumbfounded.

I had always heard that Knockback was a nuisance on melee characters, but I have to disagree. It is wonderful. It breaks groups apart, and interrupts attacks. This means you don't get swarmed as easily, and most attacks from enemies never connect as they go into knockback animation before they even hit. It is annoying against single targets, but I would rather have an irritating time against one enemy than be dead against many.

A 2H Frost Zealot is not the most effective route, I think. Fanatacism with a Holy Freeze mercenary might have been better. But I wanted a 2H Frost Zealot, so I made one anway, and I am happy with it.

I used Life Tap less often than I thought I would. I mostly used it against nasty boss packs, and unleachables, such as skeletons, stygian dolls.

BoneSnapper is now going to enjoy a retirement. He has fought long enough against the Prime Evils and deserves a rest from this endless battle. Very fun build.

I hope you enjoyed the read.

Up next...more Paladins of course.

Patriarch Gil-galad

The spear of Gil-galad was tall and keen. Like a star, it shone on the battlefield, a shimmering banner of light rallying allies to his cause, and instilling terror upon the minions of the Three. With fury unmatched, he smote down his foes in ruin, piercing them with his shining lance. But now he is missed, and his star flickers no more, for he strove with the Three who are fell, and a shadow obscures him from sight. The world trembles with the murmur of doom, and though the Three have fallen, of Gil-galad, no news has come, and eager eyes search for him from afar.

For those of you who don’t know, Gil-galad was an Elven king in the universe of Tolkien. To be brief, Gil-galad’s spear was known as Aiglos or Aeglos, and was feared by his foes. He was born in the first age and died in the second age in battle against Sauron.

Thoughts:

Well, he’s a Paladin, and a Zealot on top of that, so I automatically like him a lot. Furthermore, he was a glass cannon build, so every fight was very entertaining and engaging. For me, 4k max damage with 80% Deadly Strike is incredible, and he killed very fast. As I found with my 2h Frost Zealot some time back, going without a shield is really only a problem against archer and/or Frenzytaur boss packs. I’d say that 90% of the time, with Holy Freeze, Depcrepify, Slow Target, Knockback, and Conversion the shield isn’t missed. Moreover, Hyperion Spears have great range (4). Such range in conjunction with Knockback did a great job at keeping monsters at bay. With the help of Dracul’s Grasp, he even managed to tank 3 FE Ancients on /players 5, which I am quite proud of. This is not to say that shields are useless. As long as things went according to plan, everything was fine and dandy, but one little mistake or bit of carelessness, and things went bad very fast.

With Fanaticism, Arioc’s hit 5fpa without any additional ias, which was very nice. I used a Treachery Archon Plate for a while, but in by Act 4, I actually wasn’t getting hit nearly enough for Fade to trigger. This was due in great part to Carrion Wind. Gil-galad just happened to find it in Act 3, and it had more life steal than the ring he was using, so I switched. Ctc Twister is wonderful and I will probably use it on all future melee characters that have room for a ll ring.

Gil-galad had a lot of spare skill points, so I just threw them around haphazardly. Vengeance and Conviction was only used in a few instances and wasn’t that useful. The best part about this character, though, is that I learned something. Ghosts are always immune to physical in Hell, and even with Decrepify, they take forever to kill. I hate ghosts. Sanctuary delivers non-resistible damage to the undead. Ergo, Sanctuary is awesome. That seldom-used aura makes fighting masses of the undead much safer. Just flash it on mid-fight, stun all those rotted, incorporeal buggers, and swing away. Man Paladins rock.

Lastly, Gil-galad was an incredibly lucky character. I don’t think any character I have made so far has found so many unique items while questing. Alas, none of them were anything I needed or could trade, but still, they were there. I think I found five set rings in one hour of play once, and two uniques within minutes of each other in the Catacombs level 2. He didn’t even wear MF past normal. I just don’t get it.

Anyway, Gil-galad was very fun. He died more than I would have liked, and I should have put a Hel rune in the spear so I could have had more vitality, but its ok. I highly suggest 2h Paladins to any and everyone. If nothing else, they will make you really appreciate Holy Shield.

Patriarch DoctorClock

Level 87 Storm Ranger turned Teslafrost Zealot

Oddly enough, DoctorClock was the first character I made when I started seriously playing Single Player again and had been sitting in Act 1 Hell for nearly two years. The Storm Ranger build was very fun in Normal and Nightmare, but being my first character, he had poor items and his damage was very low for Hell, and spent more time kiting, dying, and rezzing his merc than actually killing anything. Six Pats later, I decided I should see my first character through Hell, and I also wanted my Hellforge.

Stats with gear:

Str: 139
Dex: 136
Vit: 354
Ene: 20

1489 life

Holy Shock damage: 274-5259
Holy Freeze damage: 1754-1929

Resists with Fade active: 75/85/85/75

Gear:
Guillaume's Face
Mara's
Crescent Moon
Treachery
Herald of Zakarum
Dracul's Grasp
Raven Frost
String of Ears
Carrion Wind
Gore Rider

Moron:
Act 2 Holy Freeze merc
Gear: Better than he deserves
Vamp
Duress
Reapers

Backpack full of resist/life charms

Hellforge:
NM: Don't remember
Hell: Hel...

Gameplay:

Normal and Nightmare are only distant memories, but I remember them being fun. I like Rangers and I was very sad when he came to a near halt in Hell. With a good deal patience and better gear, I probably could have trudged through Hell at a painful pace, but that just isn't how I wanted to play. I have two 2h Paladins Pats when I want a challenge.

Hell was played on /players 8 until Act 5 where I dropped it to /players 5. My strategy was pretty straight-forward and went something like this:
Monsters!
*Clickclickclickclick*
Oh, they're lightning immune.
*Switch to Holy Freeze, clicklicklickclick*
Dead

Dracul's made leach issues nearly non-existant. The ctc Twister on Carrion Wind is nice. Crescent Moon is amazing, or the ctc Static is at least. I think I'm going to stick it on future melee builds just to get some Static procs when facing large crowds. I threw on a Thundergod's Vigor when Gloams were around. 95 Light resist + absorb=good times. Very strong build, probably the most powerful I have made, but that isn't saying much given the characters I am wont to make. I'd love to see what a Teslafroster with a backpack full of Offensive skillers can do. Even dual light/cold immunes weren't a problem with the amount of crushing blow he had, along with the merc offering decent physical damage. Anyways, I strongly recommend the build if you are considering a Zealot.

Up next: I really want to make an Avenger. Been playing since launch and I still haven't made on. I just need an eth scourge for Oath.

Thanks for reading.

I figured he would die quite often because of the the very very small physical damage and leech so I decided to kinda play it safe and made a delirium and hired holy freeze merc. Both were a big help but even with them... playing him was pretty easy until I hit Crystalline Passage and try to rescue Anya... both unbreakable CI's and PI's waited me there so it wasn't really a walk in the park ... I died 2 times from Moon Lords and then once again in Frozen river from Vile Witches. Wow those girls are crazy.

Ancients were a bit tough, my merc died and I used about 10 full rejuvs... didn't feel like rerolling but I survived.

I didn't find a single valuable item with him except few socketed items, and hell HF gave a LEM.

His future is uncertain. I really don't want to retire a char on whom I spend IST and GUL but I see no duties for him until holidays when I will play in LAN with my brother and friends. Maybe I'll hit the ancient tunnels or Mausoleum and see how he performs there.

When I got Holy shock everything went down preety fast in normal/nm. In hell I died a couple of times, mostly when facing LI's.. I guess leech wasn't too good because of low physical damage. However souls were not really a problem due to the high lightning resistance and absorb when I carried lightsabre (before I made Crescent Moon).

Ah yes you may notice I had no +skills. It's pretty strange opening skill tree and seeing white numbers. However holy shock did enough damage and I really liked the -35 lightning resist on Crescent Moon. :)

For my next project I'll be making Warcry barb and rebuilding my fallen HC Amazon in SC. Damn that (normal) Memphisto.

Thoughts: Well everything was pretty straight forward. When I reached level 76 I was pretty much invincible because of dracul's. Once I got to level 79 and put Schaefer's on it was like everything I attacked had half health because of static. When I got to the arcane sanctuary the Physical Immunes where a real pain, but I pushed through with vengeance and it went smoothly for the rest of hell.

Patriarch Dienekes.

Yup, the Spartan is now patted. :D

The name Dienekes comes from the novel, "The Gates of Fire" by Steven Pressfield, which is about the battle of Thermopylae, which a select force of Greeks held a mountain pass for a week against overwhelming odds.

The character build was born long before the book however, the idea came from WhiskyJack and his 2H pally. I created this char to MP with a friend, but the MPing petered out by the time he reached Act 3 Norm.

After I read the book, I revised the build for pure SP play and added some variety for a kick. Thus Dienekes, a Spartan using a spear, the Disciple set and the Veil of Steel was reborn.

Patriarch Dienekes.
lvl 82 Spear Fanatic.

Stats:

Str: 139
Dex: 99
Vit: 252.
Ene: Hmmmmmm.........

Total life was about 1.1k

Skill pts:

20 in Zeal, Sacrifice and Fanaticism.
4 in Charge and Holy Shield. 6 in Conviction.

Equipment

The Disciple set, with a +8 str and dex jewel in armor.
The Veil of Steel with a -15 req jewel in it
Arioc's Needle (+4 skills, 222 ED)
Ravenfrost + dual leech ring

Switch is Lightsaber and Tiamat's Rebuke.

Charms: either fine sc or sc of vita. And some resistances here and there.

As Dienekes' squire in the novel was also his spear carrier, I used a NM act 2 merc for it. He uses Duriel's , eth Reapers and Guiliame 's Face. The squire is also an archer, but I opted for the act 2 merc in order to save whatever little sanity I had while designing this build.

Comments

Norm and most of NM was easy. He was wielding a 300+++ ED Stygian Pike that dealt 7.8k damage with zeal.
OKs in Chaos gave me a lot of grief. In Hell, p8 was unsustainable after dying 10+ times in the area from Blood Moor to the Stony field. I kept on getting LE/FE bosses and a single bolt was enough to maim Dienekes. THe theme of FE/LE bosses continued throughout the rest of the game. I counted more than 20 of them and had a sequence of six in a row in Act 5.

Fighting tactics are pretty much the same for all my melee builds: Charge in, and start zealing. ( Yes I am reckless). But the tactics was modified after act 1 Hell to run up abit, draw some creatures and take them down together with merc. Still number of times I died was a lot. Like ~30 times I guess. Most of the time he used the needle, except in areas where there were a lot of PIs or ranged attackers whereupon he switched to lightsaber + Tiamats. There is one quest he haven't completed yet though. The Anya quest in the Frozen River. Gloams+Vipers+ Succubi = major headache. I'll finish up that area once I think of a way to counter all that. Then he shall be retired.

Hellforge dropped a Gul in accordance to the point where the most difficult builds get the best drops. FYI, my lightning spearzon also got a Gul. The rest of my builds, some 14 in number, got Lem , Ko and Lums.

Next up: my chargeboltress sitting in act 3 hell, and a revival of Apollo my FC werebear.

Oh yeah: before I forgot. Zeal damage was 5.2k with the needle and 2.5k with Lightsaber.
