Dying quickly in Random Tourney 2013 made clear that my HC skills were craapp to nonexistent.

So I did a bog standard orbitaller single pass untwinked to practice.

Massive shout out to the forum, to HCGunther and Jiansonz for their guides on single pass MF, Jiansonz's and others' guardian writeups, etc, etc - I wouldn't have come close without all this info.

Dual spirit, 105 FCR, max vita, smoke armor, yada yada. Once I found a Lo(!), e-bug fortitude on the holy freeze merc Chalan made it all very easy. Finding a reaper's toll (in hell with very little MF) gave the choice of copious mana (from insight) or permanently decrep-ed crowds (reapers). Found a kelpie snare too so act bosses became trivial.

Other good runes found: 2x um, 1 x mal. Merc wore duress for early Hell until the Lo dropped and a suitable base was found for forti.

Players set to 8 until Hell, then began reducing slowly, particularly for below ground areas. Most of Act 5 done p1.

Rare jewelry (fcr rings, +22 str +21 mana +19 res all +32 fire res ammy (is that a good ammy?)), blue archangel's coronet, russet whale plated belt, magefist and tearhaunch.

Must have made 6 or 7 spirit swords but couldn't get one above 31FCR - think that's about a fifth of a percent chance, compensating for my other good luck. Luckily the spirit shield I made was 34 FCR!! 105FCR breakpoint was then easy, with magefists ofc.

Reaching guardian with this cookie cutter build, + lots of drop luck, + no tourney restrictions + GoMule,... makes me realise just how incredible the achievements of some in this forum are - Insane Wayne's naked zon, Jiansonz's and others' guardians in tourneys with crazy restrictions, NF and his various absurdities, the list goes on.

Although it seems obvious now, and is obvious to most in SPF, it took me a while to understand that +skills, big damage, etc, etc, that are discussed in the various build guides are not important for single pass untwinked HC. A 'glass cannon' char doing big enough damage so that enemies die before getting close enough to be dangerous is unlikely (especially at player settings other than 1). Preferable to aim for some way to keep battles safe, even if they are slow as a result. Crowd control or a reliable way to escape trouble is a must. This is all implicit in the various guardian writeups, but I hadn't quite got it. Plus of course life life life life life, & max resists.

I still need to learn crowd control, Sue basically tele'd away from danger (using big FCR and FHR), so didn't improve my cc skills really. Glacial spike (1 hard point, fully synergised from ice bolt) was helpful but I don't think it could have saved Sue from dangerous door traps or similar.

Several NDEs, only memorable ones were a boss Horadrim Ancient in NM amped and multishot Unholy Bolted Sue without me noticing, when I finally got around to looking at Sue's life bulb it was empty!!! I wore earphones from then on. Also an evil urn in Hell drifter cavern launched a boss pack of misshappens right on Sue, think her mana bulb got drained slowing down teleporting away, full rejuve presumably only just in time. Hell Nihlathak wasn't comfortable - maybe should have made Black runeword just for this - but he went down anyway.

Presumed that the guides advising to pick up everything and sell it to raise gold for gambling implied that your standards for what was worth picking up would raise as you went through the game. Was shocked to find a comment from Jiansonz saying that no, he kept picking up and selling white junk always. So Sue got with that program up until early hell then had had enough.

In the absence of crazy tourney rules, I'm not sure I should have been pushing MF as hard as possible in Normal and NM. It seemed unlikely that I would find endgame gear, or that the extra gold generated through selling magic stuff would enable extra gambling for endgame gear. Particularly when you will likely need good bases for runewords (so low MF) for your/mercs weapon/armor/shield depending on build. However,
  • what else are you going to do in normal/NM other than push MF, they should be pretty easy anyway
  • the transition to give you enough resists/safety in Hell will likely kill your MF at about the right time to find good rw bases anyway
  • The magefists (found early) were endgame after all, and I probably should have gambled some tri-resist boots at the appropriate time which could have been endgame (I'm not thrilled with tearhaunch, burned a few mill trying for something better late in Hell, no success)

Chalan spent way way too long using an eth war scythe insight, I was waiting for an elite base, but should have used a socket quest, or at least the cube, on an ilvl 37 eth partizan - very little difference between eth exceptional and normal elite. Again common knowledge but hasn't spotted it.

So overall think it was pretty easy - carelessness and impatience were more dangerous than anything in the game. I didn't use any socket quests, nor imbues. One respec (for spirit). Sue still has 14mill gold & 735 gems & lots o stuff saved for later selling all sitting in GoMule for gambling/crafting/selling respectively. I should have been more careful to avoid the NDEs but hey. Sue's equipment was good enough that I could have played more aggressively, teleporting through levels, reducing players settings & reaching Guardian much sooner, etc, but didn't want to park any monsters, thought it was a bit safer being at as high a level as possible, and also the merc's level seemed to make a big difference to his tank-ability, independent of his great gear.

Best gaming fun I've had in a long time, d2 is awesome!! Now gotta do something else for a while, d2 takes over your life. Hopefully back for Random Tourney 2014 all going well.

The Journey:

Act I-II Normal was the usual - Frost Nova and let the merc kill for you. From this point on Blizzard pretty much dominated everything. I don't remember a big part of the journey actually, because I stopped playing for 2 months or so and I started playing her last week.

She was a Meph runner, 5k+ a least I think. Now when she finished the game I'm going to respec her to Pure Blizzard and run some more Meph and eventually switch to full time AT Runner. I don't think thats gonna happen soon since she has the best map I've ever seen.

Well, I'm kinda tired and I'm starving so that's that. I'll add some screenies later.:p

Classic meteorb build. I still like pure Blizzard more, nothing else to say really. Maybe a well geared and higher level one would do better. I already respec'd her to Blizzard as the whole purpose of making her was I didn't have a dedicated Mephisto runner and I miss a lot of the stuff he can drop. Mainly another Harly, SS, War Traveler and a lot more useful exceptional uniques. I don't even have an Oculus!

The Journey

Normal and Nightmare were pretty uneventful as she was twinked. Hell was pretty straight forward - kill only what you have to to finish the quests, leave everything else behind. Although I killed a lot of stuff in early Act I so I can equip my ammy (at clvl67) and the Spirit Monarch.

The only places I had trouble were the Chaos Sanctuary, mainly because of Infector's nasty mods and because I didn't clear enough space to fight him in a hit and run battle and the Ancients as my merc died in one hit and without the Insight I'm a blue addict without any inventory space left. The 4th attempt iirc was successful.

Hi peeps! I've been hanging around here for a while, reading posts but not posting. I thought I'd tell you about my first guardian, Sidewinder. She's a standard meteorb sorc, although I played her single pass for an extra challenge. Considering she's single pass/untwinked, she ended up with great gear. She also found a Jah, which is pretty sweet. I used to play SC on bnet, but I never really got into HC before. I have to say that getting a guardian with no outside assistance was an extremely fun and satisfying experience in the end. I didn't know if I had the patience to do it, thought I would definitely get myself killed at some point. But no, I was lucky! I doubt I could've done it in older patches with FE bug, no Spirit/Insight (I used RWM) etc.

Most of hell was played on p5 or p3, but I chickened out and did Baal and his minions on p1. I cleared every area, which was both fun/interesting and tedious (and also necessary to succeed in single pass). The most difficult was probably the Icy Cellar, where I found claw vipers, gloams and succubi. I nearly died a couple of times in there.... WSK was ridiculously easy. I got soul killers and defilers on every level, plus some imps and snakes. The throne had knights/horadrim ancients/more snakes, which was reasonably dangerous I suppose. I seriously saw a lot of snakes, I think they spawned in at least 5 areas. I even got those nasty poison cloud snakes in Nihlathak's funland, but I managed not to get myself gibbed fortunately.

Head: Eth Shako with Thul, 2/7 durability remaining - I found this baby in one of those hell portals in A5. Was horrified when it was ethereal, but I used and socketed (and personalised, heh...) it anyway. I ended up being ultra-cautious to prevent durability loss for the rest of the act, which is probably partially responsible for my survival (so perhaps the eth was a blessing!)
Amulet: Seraph's Hymn (woo +skills)
Body: Smoke
Wpn: Spirit (I made like 6 of them to get a good FCR roll)
Shield: Whitsan's with Pdiamond - I was pretty lucky to find this (in fact I found two in NM) - having 75% block for such a low stat investment probably saved my life at least 5 times.
Belt: Caster crafted belt with 10 FCR, 24 FHR
Rings: Two 10 FCR with pretty crappy resists
Gloves: A crappy rare with some resists
Boots: A totally sweet rare with 30 FRW, 40 LR. 38 FR, 20 MF and 6 sweet, sweet stamina.

I was really happy with my gear. I was able to hit the 63 FCR and 86 FHR breakpoints, plus have maxed resists (except poison but that is for losers), plus max block, all with +6 skills and decent MF.

Merc:
Neeraj (A2 holy freeze) AKA the chugmeister (he drank a prodigious quantity of red potion)
Wpn: Spirit Colossus Voulge
Body: Treachery
Hat: Some circlet with +str so he could equip the colossus voulge

He did quite a lot of dying. Luckily HC only applies to me. I would've made him a Delerium with the Ist I found, but I'd already used my only Lem on Treachery! I never found another one.

Finds: Jah rune! Also the Shako, a 10% Dracul's, the Seraph's Hymn and an Ist.
Hellforge: Ko, but who cares when I have a Jah?
NDEs: Many. Often involving snakes....

The future:
I don't think I can go back to SC, so I will probably try to make a melee Guardian of some type. I'll probably also do some MFing eventually and try to find a Ber rune so I make make you know what, and then presumably lose it by dying and quit forever.

First Guardian!

Welp, another one of these threads, but I am very excited to say that my first guardian was a fireball/orb sorceress, Trac. I really wanted my first Guardian to be a Barbian, but that was proving very difficult after two deaths in Hell. I lost two sorceresses in Hell as well, but I knew if I gave it one more shot then I'd have a chance.

As a whole, the trip to Guardian went very smoothly, with only a few small (umm, one big) bumps in the road. The first bump occured in The Plains of Despair when I ran into a really nasty pack of Burning Souls that were shooting me like crazy from off the screen. At the time my lightning resist was rather low, and each shot really hurt. I retreated at one point rather quickly and managed my way into a TP, and saw that I was at 106 health. So I was probably one good shot away from another RIP.

I got to act 5 in the late 70s, but didn't want to take on Hell Ancients until my Merc was level 85. So I did a lot of MFing in the Ancient Tunnels and a little MFing with Meph. Meph was still a little trouble for me, b/c my merc would die so fast. While in the Tunnels I found a few nice things (including three! Arioc Needles... duh!?). My nicest find though was my first HC facet, a +4/-5 lightning one too boot. It will work great one day with my amazon that I have started (my next planned guardian). That was rather exciting, and I think it was only on my 6th AT run.

The big bump came with Hell Ancients. I took them on at lvl 85, but man did I have some troubles!!! My first attempt went very badly with an immediate curse and my merc went down fairly quickly. After a few more attempts, I hadn't even been able to kill one of them and was getting discouraged. I thought of trying to get a couple more levels and then trying again, but I decided to keep at it. Around the 7th or 8th try I got very optimistic when I had taken two of them down. My merc went down after the first one, and so it was just me and the guy that throws the axes left. Sadly I only had 3 red potions left. We were going at it for a little while (I had to keep retreating to regain mana b/c I was out of blue pots as well). Eventually I had to bail out when he had 1/4 life left b/c I was out of potions and at about half life myself. That was discouraging, but I knew I could do it now. It ended up being the 11th or 12th try that I finally killed the three of them, and my merc managed to stay alive the entire time.

Finally the WSK was real tough with a lot of oblivion knights but I just went really slowly and it all worked out and Baal went down!

Anyways, here are the stats of Trac at lvl 87 (been doing some Pindle, AT, and Meph running since I guardianed this morning).

I'd like to eventually do Baal runs as well, but so far I've only done 2 and each of them took forever though I did find a set Loricated Mail on one of the runs. I just don't understand how HC players can MF the WSK and Baal. I feel fairly safe in the AT/Pindle/Meph but in the WSK I feel like I'm on the brink of death the entire time! Any tips for WSK running with HC sorcs? Do I just need to be in the 90s to be safer?

I had a few tries before at making an untwinked no re-running Guardian, but they all ended up in miserable faleours. Patch 1.11 made it a little easier to make it to Guardian or I got better at playing hardcore. Difficult area's were a Gloam infested Frozen River and WSK and the Ancients took a reroll after they stomped my merc in a few seconds the first time and there were two FI/CI Ancients. I had a few nice finds on the way like a Windforce from the Pits, a Gul rune from Hell Hellforge and Wartravelers, but I didn't use any of those. The only unique that I used from time to time was a Natures Peace, which proved helpfull at Nihlatak and the first two waves of Baals minions. All act bosses dropped crap, horay for the quest drop.

Lyrella has reached Guardianship, and honestly, I wasn't sure that she would. She felt so fragile near the end, particularly my mercenary. However, reach Guardianship she did! She blasted through normal with CB, wiped out nightmare with FO and then used a mix of the two during hell.

Thinkings:
Whee, this was fun. Except for a few minor bumbs in hell (aka chaos sanctuary. Only NDE was there too) it was smooth sailing all along. I first maxed nova and lightning mastery, then orb and static field. She probably drank a bazillion potions in normal until her merc could finally use insight. Even then, she needed a pot now and then to keep spamming the novas. Still, I found this a very fun build to play and she turned out even better than by old SC nova sorc.

The main idea using nova is to spam static a little first. This highlights the opposition and hits basically everything that's in the same act as she was. If stuff is coming close to me on it's own accord I just switch to nova when things come in range. If not, I teleport right on top of stuff and start spamming the hurt. Good damage and high FCR normally keeps stuff stunlocked unless it's resistant. Massive archer packs with curse and stuff are a bit icky but she's got 2 lines of defence there:

First of all, the upp'd visceratuant gives her a 72% base chance to block. Sweet. This definetly saved her *** more than once. Second, the occulus has a good chance to bail her out if she gets swarmed. This is really neat for his build as she only gets hit if something goes awry. As long as she's getting everything stunlocked and is save she doesn't get hit and doesn't get ported. However a bunch of extra fast somethings rush me or a million arrows suddenly converge on me from off-screen I can be sure that the occy will wisk her away in time. I know some people have issues with this but if you plan and rely on this it's really cool.

I didn't get here a secondary attack until mid act 1 hell. Just couldn't pick whether it was gonna be fire wall or frozen orb. In the end, frozen orb won by a fraction as I deemed this better for fighting the ancients and lister. There were many occasions however when firewall would have been superior. Probably there is no one right choice here.

In contrast to previous chars, this one could use her mercenary. Well, hard for him to stay behind if he gets yanked around by teleport.

Final words go to the ancients, as usual. They were easy for this lady once they stopped spawning cursed. I just ported away and static'd for a bit which got 2 of them to 50%. Then led them on a merry chase spamming FO as I retreated. The whiler was FE / Extra Fast which made taking him out a bit dicey but the occy ported me out of harm's way. The rest was easy.

She did not find anything notable at all on her way through the game. Forge drops were Hel and Ko. Very dissappointing considering I'm only 3 Gul away from my precious Lo rune...

Next up... Dunno yet. Maybe some Mfing with this lady. She can take most of the areas quite well and playing her is fun. Doesn't seem to be as lucky as some of my other fellows, though...

This is a hybrid Sorceress that uses Frozen Orb and Nova, and makes use of the full tal’s set because hybrids excel by using the full set. Build and Gear Progression:

The build, being a hybrid, splits the skills between the cold and lightning skill trees. I maxed out Frozen Orb, Nova, and Lightning Mastery, and ran with 1 point in cold mastery. I don’t specifically recall what order I did them in, but I likely pumped nova until level 30, where I maxed orb, then finished maxing nova, followed by light mastery. I Put 1 point into all the usual one point wonders as they became available. After that I choose to max out Telekinesis for the bonus to ES. I’m one point shy of maxing telekenisis so ideally the next point would go there, and then I would put 3 or 4 points in cold mastery to get it to level 17. After that I would probably pump ES itself for a little more absorption power or warmth for faster mana regen.

Stats are the same as they always are, enough strength for spirit shield, rest into vitality. I might change this to be a half/half vit energy split at some point since I am partially incorporating ES into the build.

Gear progression worked out to be my standard starter gear, which is a mish mash of various set pieces (cleglaws, harus’s, angelics, etc, with a khalim’s will flail). It eventually moved into lower level caster gear including spirit sword, vmagi, peasant crown, rhyme shield, frosties, infernostrides, nightsmoke belt, fcr rings, and a random skill ammy. Items were replaced as end game equipment became available, consisting of full tals, spirit shield, aldurs boots, trangs, soj and bkwb. I ran with a cresent moon broad sword for the –elr for some time as well, and ultimately ended with it for a switch weapon although I hardly ever use it now with full tals. I plan on switching it to a memory +3 es staff at some point if I ever happen to come across one. I was sure to throw a large charm with fhr into my inventory to hit the 7 frame fhr breakpoint, especially since porting into the middle of a pack of enemies is kind of part of the deal with this build.

Questing and Gameplay:

Once again I think this was another one of those sorcs that I started to run with Goldtru (did I mention she likes to die a lot?). Once she reached the end of normal she was parked for a while and I did my usual level to 42 so if I ever decide to take on Nightmare I could. On one of those days where we were trying to decide what to do, cdm didn’t feel like continuing with our current set of characters we were working on so we tried to pair up other characters we had started and this is what we decided on.

Progress was smooth sailing through pretty much all of nightmare and hell, although the times we did play were few and far between so the characters took a while to complete. I don’t really recall anything overly difficult or troubling (one of the advantages of a hybrid build). Strategy consisted mainly of teleporting around, get to a mob and throw a frozen orb, maybe (key word maybe) static a couple times and if they didn’t look overly dangerous teleport into them and start spamming nova. If they were lightning immune just stand back and throw orbs (use some strategic running back and forth for fun of course), the opposite for cold immunes. If they looked overly dangerous I would either just keep throwing orbs or use nova somewhere on the edge of the group, and while this isn’t as effective it was safer. For most of hell cdm had enigma on his wind druid so were able to speed through most of the game without a hitch killing packs of monsters on the way, and the combination of physical/cold/lightning damage we were doing took care of most enemies, dual physical/cold immunes or physical/light immunes took a little more time. Nova was pretty good about putting monsters into hit recovery, but some of the higher hp monsters didn’t quite make it. Infinity probably would have taken care of this problem, but then we probably would have run out of mana much faster without insight present (besides, nova is a mana hog and we don’t want to make the game too easy right?). Nightmare I believe was played on P8, hell was either on P3 or P5.

Interesting finds:

Nothing special that I recall, unless CDM remembers something that I don’t. Hell Forge was a Pul.

Future Plans:

Nothing really, if this was prior versions I would say cows, because cows are fun, especially teleporting into the middle of a pack and spamming nova. Otherwise hybrids lack in killing speed for running areas so just random MP for now, hopefully enough to finish out planned skill point placement.

thoughts: Well this build is really safe, i cant think of any truly tough areas that gave me tons of trouble, my merc was able to handle jus about any pack of CI's i ran into after i found him reapers. the one exception was lister, he spawned CI with Fana Aura so i had to lead him out of the throne room.
chaos sanc was pretty annoying thanks to OK's being CI and casting IM every damn time my merc started to kill them. spent tons of gold ressing him but eventually got through it.
i ran nm baal up until about ~75 then i ran hell meph until 81 and found reapers. this gave me tons of nice sh!t i found 2 viper magis and one was perfect 35% and the other had 34% lol then the one pair of war travs i found were a perfect 50% so that was nice, i wanted to keep running meph until i found a wizzy originially, but eventually figured i was strong enough to take act 4/5 down and i did.

thas all i can think of atm so thanks for reading =)

Initially I was expecting to get bored stumbling around without the minimap. So I just dumped all the initial skill points in Charged Bolt and then Lightning. This led to quick progress, even though it was hard to keep up with the mana consumption of Lightning.
The defining phase for shortie was late A2NM to late A3NM. In short succession the following items dropped and RWs were completed: Spirit, Chancies, Insight (Bill), Tarnhelm, Skin of the Vipermagi(!), Tal Mask, Peasant Crown and a Lum (later used in Splendor). This led to a significant increase in MF, Safety and Power. In addition to that the NM HF was Um.
I had decided around lvl 50 that I did want a cold skill as backup. FO and Blizzard were discarded as too boring. So, Glacial Spike was maxed (+1 point in CM). GS performed very well as a freezing agent, but damage wasn't great and it consumed insane amounts of mana.
Another nice break was a second Um from a corpse in the Far Oasis Hell. This meant some sweet merc equip (see below).
A1H and A2H were more or less full cleared (no minimap...) on /p3 for some nice exp. A3H and A4H were done rather quick on /p3 and finally I rushed through A5H on p1.
After I had gotten the merc's equip sorted out, Hell was rather easy. Lightning did decent damage and LI's were frozen. NDEs are too many to count, most caused by problems with weapon switching. It's fun to teleport right next to the cursed Unique you just wanted to aim Lightning at... Also: no ES, no block = a bit fragile.

Enough fcr for the 78fcr breakpoint, never managed to hit 105 for GS. The low Spirit roll was annoying and I never found a second Amn rune (and cubing up some Thuls was forbidden). Tarnhelm and Chancies were used until A3H, then I went for more safety. The Gull (from NM Diablo) came out for Superuniques and Act bosses (sometimes for normal uniques, too).

Overall very good performance by Kasim. The additional levels gained in Hell helped a lot, as did the insane equipment ;)
Early in Hell he was wearing Crow Caw/Insight Bill/Tal Mask, the Duriel's (used against CEs) is from A2H and Crescent Moon and Duress were both made in early A3H.

Other finds include: Dragonscale(!), 2 Ali Babas, Doombringer, Pul from Hell HF, Ginther's, Swordguard and many more Exceptional Uniques.

Future Plans: Astonishingly, yes. I decided to merge her with my huge "graveyard" stash, i.e. the combined GoMule stashes of all my dead HC chars (but not their equip/chest). This yielded a better Spirit, Magefist, Lidless and a SoJ. She now has 120fcr and kicks some serious ***.
Well, probably twinking her out a bit is all I'll do. Running the common targets over and over is too boring, so I doubt she'll see too much action. Don't think I'll start a twinked char anytime soon, so her finds wouldn't be used anyway. I might do a couple of Baals until she dies...

Summary: Lightning rocks, GS not so much. Read up on her progress in the tournament thread. Also: untwinked/single pass/HC is the way to play D2.

Skunknova, my Nova and Blizzard sorc, will hereby be known as Guardian Skunknova. She's my 11th Guardian, and my second sorceress.

I always wanted to play a Nova sorc, but the skill is vastly underpowered in 1.11 (or vastly over expensive in terms of mana, depending on how you look at it). I did not have any of the wicked new runewords that make a Nova sorc viable on the realms (whatever those items are that give Conviction auras, etc.). Nor did I have a Griffon's Eye, which might've been a huge help. But I *did* twink this character like crazy, and she wouldn't have been possible without the gear... and even with the gear, there were many parts of hell where she basically became an underpowered Blizz sorc, for safety's sake. You can't cast Nova on the edge of the screen :cool:

The battle with the Ancients was fairly easy. I got a good roll: although two were cold immune, and one was lightning and cold, none had other bad mods. I didn't have any trouble getting them to follow my merc, who withstood their onslaught well... I SF'd and Blizz'd them until the leaper was dead, then Nova'd the whirler to his doom. The thrower was the CI/LI, which was fine with me... his axes didn't do much damage, and although he seemed mostly interested in chasing me around, eventually I got him to pay attention to the merc, who made reasonably short work of him.

The WSK was scarier. There were many cold immune boss packs of witches on level 1, and I eventually simply tele'd through the level. Level 2, though, was a cakewalk... skeleton mages with no immunities, and pit vipers (poison immune). Level 3 was infested with more witches and Oblivion Knights... after fighting my way through about half of it, I tele'd the rest. Too many IM-related merc resurrections for my liking.

The Throne itself lived up to its name. Dolls, Gloams and Infidel. Did I mention the first boss was a set of convicting gloams? Eek. But luckily, they were around a corner, and I could safely Blizz them to sleep. The Minions were a piece of cake... and Bartuc's pack dropped me a pair of Gimmershreds. Baal was no challenge, either. Tele, static, nova nova nova nova nova (etc. x 1000). "Here, have a Sigon's Shield" he croaked as he died, "and this beautiful Rakescar." Ugh. He clearly deserved it.

I now have three more characters to go to complete my double-sept (a wind druid, currently in act 5 hell, is the closest candidate).

After my last two characters died at 80 and 81 I was pretty determined to make it all the way with this one, and it turned out to be fairly easy. So the build is a pretty basic lightning/orb sorc. I have a matriarch meteorb, so I had some idea of what to expect. I think I prefer lightning to fireball or meteor.

She used full isenharts :D to whack away at the baddies, through to the end of act 2. Act 3 she switched to a spire of lazerus staff and started actually using spells. Somewhere around the end of normal she gained the required level for the chromatic ire staff, which, for the record, is awesome. +3 sorc skills +1 each mastery and my one is a great roll giving +37 resists and +24% max life. All that at level 35.

With the chromatic, a +33 vipermagi, tarnhelm, +20res/27mf ammy string of ears belt and a host of rares I took her through nightmare in a single day. max resists dmg reduced and heaps of life made things easy. At the start of hell she got most of her current items which are;

Hell was mostly straitforward. Did a fair few meph runs when I got to him, manly for exp, as well as some pits. UM from hell forge. After doing the anya quest I did pindle runs on players 1 from level 82-86, hoping he might drop me tals armour, but no luck. Plenty of other good stuff though, including the gladiators bane my merc is now wearing.

Ancients were a breeze, had to re-roll twice, first time i saw lightning bolts and conviction, and second korlic was LI/CI. Third time was good and neither the merc or I dropped below about 75% life. No big drama in the throne room either, merc died to IM at some point but survived both the minions and baal.


So there she is level 87 at present, current skills;

So tell us about your char!
Glad you asked. OK, you didn't, but, anyway. Despite using such odd skills, it worked out surprisingly well! CB obviously works very well up close, but also against large groups of weak monsters. Of course we can't make things too easy, so the bolts don't pierce their targets. Here is where Lightning comes in. It complements CB very well in that you can use it to snipe targets from afar and to kill lined up monsters. Hydra is the 'talk to the hand' skill for lightning immunes and 'holy crap!' monsters. Also, the only monster that spawns lightning and fire immune naturally are Flying Scimitars, so encountering dual immune monsters should be rare enough, right?

As for gear, we all know that full Tal Rasha is superior on any dual/triple tree sorc. Since I'm playing HC and I would, well, y'know, kinda keep my chars alive, I decided against using the often-used Spirit Shield, and to go full block with Whitstan's Guard. I used Treks for the FHR and poison resist. I probably should've added a few FHR charms. Also, I could've used a BK ring instead of one of the two FCR rings without losing a casting frame. Yeah, way to prepare your precious char.

Late-game I resorted more and more to Lightning, and CB took a back seat. This char isn't really optimally geared for CB, so I won't hold that against it. I'm amazed by the usefulness of Hydra, even though Fire Mastery wasn't maxed by a long shot. Hydra definitely isn't the fastest killing skill, but it is very safe and gets the job done just fine. I'm surprised there aren't more Hydra using sorcs out there.

Guardian MissTaken - Static/Ranged Enchantress

Hello again, all. I have finally gotten to finish a build that I attempted in a previous group, but was unable to complete due to the group falling apart. I have played a few ranged enchantresses, but after reading this guide I wanted to do a party helper version. As I said, the first attempt was cut short so when I got another chance at group play, I went with this build. Static Field is great! I know, no one is surprised by this statement. As a one point wonder there are hardly any skills better in the game. As a 20 point wonder it's even better. Coupled with enchant, you aren't much for destroying the game on your own, but it is a phenominal party build.

This sorc was played in the very initial play session (July 17ish, 2015) with Tru, Pyro, myself, and my son. It is the first time he and I have been able to truly play together and it was a blast. Tru didn't join us after the first session, but we managed to troop on without her. This was my son's first trip all the way through the game and he did great. He had good fun and I was able to impart some D2 wisdom. He started out as a ranged fire pally that used pretty much the same progression of gear as my sorc (ravenclaw, kuko, etc). When we got into the later acts he was noticing a slow down in killing speed so he switched to a fanat zealot build when we entered NM. Pyro went conviction avenger all the way and it was a good trio to complete the game with. When Pyro puts up his Guard thread, I will link it here.

Maxed static (need one more in it) is half the built, it's great! Maxed enchant damage of course. Then while trying to figure out what else to put into, Pyro suggested one into ES and possibly dumping extra points into TK so I went with it and don't regret it one bit. This is a (nearly) mana free build. Static is cheap and Bolts don't use mana.

Gear for this build is easy; get to demon machine, get 10 ias and throw as much +skills and res on everything else. Because my CoH is in archon, I went ahead and dumped a few more into strength to be able to use spirit on teleport/buff switch. I decided on hoto/spirit in general just so that I wasn't having to swap gear a lot. I can buff enchant a little bit more with leaf, but leaf is useless for teleporting. I finished the game and then optimized my gear a bit more (which drove Pyro nuts) so what's listed is final, but wasn't what you see in screen shots. Shako, different gloves and a different socket in my demon machine are about all that is different. Pierce is a must for this, KB isn't so much, but with it you can pin a FI monster to a wall and let your merc finish him off.

This was a really good build; everything in normal was slivered to nothing by static, nightmare saw good gear and enchant starting to show through, and hell just plain sucked. Hell is why this isn't much of a solo build. I'm sure it can be done, but it would be a slog. You would need to ramp up your merc's damage to deal with all of the multitude of fire immunes. Lightning immunes aren't all that fun either since you don't have them at half their life. So stick with a party, preferably one that can benefit from your enchant. I do highly recomend this build to anyone that is a fan of rangers. The Maggot lair and any other area that lines monsters up in a row is super fun. Explosions + pierce has to be experienced.

Future plans for this character is to level her a bit (probably put some points into Glacial Spike for something to do to fire immunes), then to make her my go-to enchantress (.07 Ravenclaw from phar). I'm sure she could be used to rush characters easily through normal and nightmare as well, but I have a better all around norm-hell solution.

-- I knew I wanted my first guardian to be a sorceress, because I like that class. I also knew I wanted it to be a somewhat unique and challenging build. My first attempt was a charged bolt sorceress that died in Act3 Hell; this lady is my second try.

Notes:
-- When I was planning this character, I knew that mana would be a huge issue with a nova/nova sorceress. I figured a 1.07 mpk ring would be a good way to deal with the problem, but it was obviously out of the question on an untwinked character. I then realized that it wasn't! I started her in 1.07, quested to the cube (keeping as low of a level as possible), then ran the Cold Plains and cubed rings with the sapphire recipe until I found that one (I found a 25mpk ring before that one, but I kept trying). It took quite a while and was rather frustrating, but worked marvelously, especially in Normal and Nightmare. In Hell, I had to rely a lot more on warmth, Insight, and potions.
-- Bob found exactly three unique rings on her way to guardian: one manald heal, one nagelring, and one SoJ. Granted, I was running Andariel for quite a while, but that is still ridiculously lucky.
-- "Spirit" rolled 35% FCR on the first try. Ha!
-- The belt took many, many tries to craft, and is not that great.
-- The amulet took eight tries to craft, and I am quite happy with it.

Gameplay

I started in 1.07. As soon as I had my MPK ring, I converted to 1.13c. Frost nova was her first skill. She quested merrily and easily -- if cautiously -- to Hell. There I ran Andariel and the Ancient Tunnels for a while, collecting most of my gear. I then replaced MF gear with safety gear, redistributed my stat and skill points in the manner you now see them, and quested the rest of the way through Hell.

There were a number of scary points. Nova/nova is a frightening way to play HC, because both skills require being all up in the monsters' faces. And, in typical fashion, my favorite strategy was to teleport directly into the center of a group of monsters and spam away with my nova of choice. Teehee. The hardest parts in Hell were the Hellforge (Io), Chaos Sanctuary, and Frozen River. Everything else was easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Future Plans

I have a "Lo" rune and a bunch of decent melee character gear, but the thought of twinking in HC does not appeal to me right now. I might make a zerker barb at some point, though. As for Bob, I am thinking of going pure frost nova and running the Ancient Tunnels for a while. I discovered that frost nova is an infinitely more enjoyable skill for doing that than blizzard, and works quite well.

Gameplay
This was not my first time playing a charged bolt sorceress, and it was much the same as the last. Once I started putting points in Hydra, though, the gameplay changed quite a bit. With Hydra, I could afford to play more cautiously when the circumstances made it advisable. I used both skills heavily in Hell, and in that sense they were nicely complimentary: for most of Hell, I played with two main skills, not a primary with occasional backup. Nevertheless, the two skills do not really pair that well. One likes fast casting close to an enemy; one has a cast timer and works at distance.

Progress was mostly smooth. In the early parts of the game, I moved quickly, then ran convenient areas to build experience. In Hell, I played more methodically. The Ancients were tough, as were some of the underground areas in Act 2. The WSK was slow but straightforward, and Baal went down easily.

This is one of my favorite sorc builds to play online. It was quite a challenge to play especially before twinking, I can't count how many times I nearly died. After twinking though I had only a couple spots that gave me difficulty. Hell chaos sanctuary was slow due to all the fire immunes and a low damage charged bolt but it did help while my merc killed. Hell ancients weren't as difficult as I thought they would be, only one spawned fire immune so I worked on the other two until dead then the FI one went down fairly quickly. The throne room was full of gloams, ghouls and lords. Wave four was difficult, they chased us out of the throne room. I'm casting fireballs and while we were running through the halls we'd get one or two isolated and slowly whittled them down to none. Baal's minions were, of course, fire immune which made for an even longer battle but same as with wave four we'd get a few isolated in the halls until all were dead. Baal was easy to kill compared to his minions, big wuss! 😉

Now to figure out what to try to guardian next. :scratch:

From my experiences with this Echantress I can tell that it's a great team character, but not on her own. My enchant added a healthy 1084-1343 fire damage, but on its own this isn't great. Luckily, HotStuff had 99% chance to pierce and Demon Machine fires explosive arrows. Enchant happens to carry over to the explosions, so the best possible scenario is six (pierce only works up till that many targets) stacked ghosts, each getting hit by the actual arrow. Each individual ghost then receives twelve times the enchant damage, along with the little damage that the arrow and the explosions (enhanced by Fire Mastery) did. EDIT: should be seven times the damage. Silly me.

Of course, did didn't happen very often. Single targets are a pain and fire immunes are the most common. Energy Shield is a nice bonus to her safety, but it only helps so much. Luckily, she played in a team with a skelliemancer (lotsa skellies and revives = lotsa Enchant damage), a fanazealot (awesome tank), a kicksin (good char on its own, great CC) and a bowazon with Demon Machine as well (moar Enchant goodness). The AR bonus is great for these chars, too.

It was a great experience, and amazingly fun, too! 👋

Eats was Guardianed in MP play alongside Greebo (Greebo: FanaZealer), Arkado (Hotstuff: Enchantress) and some random dude that's been off the HC scene for awhilez but wanted to test the waters (Nightfish: Fishymancer, classic 😉) Virgait was along for the initial stages but RL stuff came up and he wasn't able to complete the journey. Next time for sure.

Our team began unfurnished but by the end of Normal we decided to twink on. Things sped up as a result. Nightmare was played at breakneck speed. We literally ran through everything: mobs, act bosses, ranged attackers; you name it, we killed it. Iirc, Acts 4 and 5 were played in one sitting. Things slowed down in Hell but not by much. NF's Amp and Skellies provided good crowd control, breaking all PIs and allowing me to run with BoS, hitting Fade if cursed. Greebo was a real standout for me, as he tanked it upfront alot. I would join him occasionally but if I was cursed or poisoned or unsure of any boss auras or mods, I'd step back and take out any stragglers around the outside of the main melee action. AR was kept high with Arkado's enchant, also adding considerable fire damage to my regular attacks as I primed up charges. The Hell Act Bosses were a real pushover. Decrip plus hard hitting Fanatic chars plus skellies galore saw very quick Boss deaths.

The last game sitting began with just Greebo, NF and myself taking out Diablo. Onto Act 5 Bloody Hills and bloody archers and bloody slingers. (They're called the Bloody Foothills for a reason ya know) Here is where I hit my panic button a few times (CoS) but eventually we got through it no probs. I paused to take a screenie but nearly deeds as the game pauses momentarily (as we all know) but pauses even longer in MP play (which I didn't know. lolz, Down to about a 1/3rd of my life bulb AND I lost the pic to boot!) Hit rejuve real quick and kept on trucking. No deeds for EatMyFeet D2, not today :alright: We decided to leave Anya as everyone's resists were pretty good. So forwards and upwards to Mount Arreat. Just before hitting the Ancients, Arkado entered the game. So we scored the Ancient's Way WP and let Hotstuff take over hosting duties, so she could kill Big D and join us in Act 5. Diablo bites it

Then onto the Ancients. If they rolled bad, anyone could re-roll. The first roll, they were cursed. But the HC All Stars don't back off from nobody. When we roll, we roll it hard. (Having said that, I didn't engage them, letting skellies, revives and the others take care of those good ole boys. :p) Should've taken a screenie but after that last attempt, nah. WSK 2 had Gloams but Greebo busted out the Salvation aura, giving us a healthy LR boost. Baal's minions were taken care of by the skellies and revives. Baal himself? You decide

All in all, an enjoyable experience and one I would do again. Next time, I'd like to try a more MP friendly char: Barb for BO, Shout, etc or (dare I say it) Pally for auras or Bonemancer/IGMancer (curses) Big ups to the others : Arkado, Greebo (First Guardian, sweeetttt!), and NF for hosting. :highfive: Thx for taking the time.
