This character was born as a part of Hector’s tournament: Septavariate. Ben is my first Guardian in this project, so that means 1/7. This tourney doesn’t have any restrictions, only to play untwinked. And that’s exactly what I do and what I like, I can’t ever imagine to play HC twinked. The beginning of the game was classical, at first melee necro, then Bone spear necro with CE and huge mana problems. But this was getting slowly better. The damage was good and on higher players setting leveling went well. It was possible to re-run areas in this tourney, but I didn’t want to do some bigger MFing or rune hunting on purpose, I wanted to move ahead. So first noticeable improvement in gear happened in the end of NM. The Cow King dropped Sol rune, what went into first Insight (in normal weapon, as I couldn’t wait more for better base weapon, mana ate my patience), and also Ben gained this coronet:

So this were Ben’s best items for the most of Hell difficulty.

Bone necro is quite powerful for untwinked playing, I would recommend that even over classical summoner, as summoner is very slow. Combination of quite high damage and Golem+Bone armor+Bone prison makes him very safe. And it is quite big difference to have or to not have synergized Bone prison. It feels almost lame to say that I just imprisoned any even slightly dangerous bosspack and felt safe and comfortable (and thanks to Teleport charges even merc felt often safe and comfortable : D). It fully absorbed also any LE spells (of course I don't mean gloams), and pleasant surprise was that even for example Mephisto was nicely helpless. Not many untwinked chars can feel so much easy in their life :).

In act 4 another unexpected improving in gear – Harlequin Crest from Lord de Seis! That was really wow. Although Ben started to wear it from act 5, as he needed light+fire resist from his previous circlet for fight with Diablo. Diablo was quite easy , but with few hot whiles. The tactic was simple, run to the middle, cast golem there, then move a bit aside and when Diablo appears cast decrepify and imprison him. This startegy quite worked, the only hot while was when Diablo did the same - imprisoned Ben. Man, that prison is tough! Gladly he was also imprisoned, so he couldn't come any closer and with casting golem in opposite direction than Ben was standing was possible to divert his fire and light attack from Ben. That wasn't pleasant situation, but also that was the worst thing what happened. Diablo went down quite fast with Bone spirits then.

Act 5, my favourite act, went nicely. Good was even battle with Ancients. The easiest one in my HC career, I would almost say it was a pleasure. Again huge Bone prison ruled here. Only Korlic, of course, was hunting Ben at first. When he died, two others Ancients ended like this - poor guys :) - Talic and Madawc. I had to laugh at them. If I imagine how my other HC untwinked chars suffered here...this was a revenge!

The rest was easy. Even gloams weren't any problem. Waves = Bone prison (lame me). Baal = Decrepify + Golem (cloning didn't help him).

Guardian Skunkbone

Introducing Guardian #10 in my quest for a double septivirate: Skunkbone the bonemancer. Maxed skills were: bone spear, bone spirit, bone prison, bone wall, with one point in bone armor, teeth, corpse explosion, clay golem, golem mastery, summon resist, and most curses. Damage for bone spear, after gear, was around 2200 or so.

This character was a blast to play. He killed enemies very easily in hell, and I think would have been perfectly viable even with less stellar gear (and this character did have pretty darn good gear). The merc's insight weapon was helpful, but I almost took it off of him... the only time I was really glad to have it was when I used bone spirit, which I pretty much only used on bosses. Even then, mana pots would've been sufficient.

The Ancients were a piece of cake. Their mods weren't too scary, though one was cursed... for once, they actually paid attention to my merc and Gumby, except for the leaper, who locked on me early and stayed on my tail. I managed to take down the thrower first, but then my merc bit the dust to the whirler. Still, by that time, the whirler was down to about a third of his life... the rest of the battle didn't take too long. The Worldstone Keep was a breeze... though there were OK's on the third level, they never IM'd my merc. The minions went down without too much fuss, and Baal wasn't too bad either (slowed down pretty well, thanks to Decrepify and Gumby). He dropped nothing of interest, though I can't complain... the hellforge rewarded me with my first Gul rune (yay!), and Diablo dropped me my first Mara's Kaleidoscope. Not bad at all.

I'll keep it short this time. I wanted a Pit necro and created this fella 2 days ago. Only thing in mind was to finish the game as fast as possible. Novamancers are nothing special to play while questing so I opted for a 'rush'.
Started as twinked to the teeth in Envy jewels Summoner -> Level 30 Respec to Nova -> Level 65 Respec to include Enigma. Rush through all Acts, level at Eldrich. Stopped at the Pits until level 82 and rushed towards Guardian after.

Final thoughts

Playing experience
General
This is my first HC character who has less than 1k Life. I decided to go with Max Block instead of full vit since Necromancers only get 2 life points per Vitality point. I thought that Max Block would add more survivability, and sincei use Whitstan's Guard i don't need to spend an awful amount of Dex to reach 75%.

This character was very interesting to play, and it involved alot of tactics. I actually walked alot, something i have never taken advantage of before. Since i had gone for Max Block i did not wan't it to be cut down to 25% because im running.

1 point Attract was all the crowd control i needed in Hell. It's not as easy to use as DV, but you need ~12-16 points to make DV's duration decent in Hell.

I used a HF Merc, but im thinking of switching to Might. Even though the slow from HF is great, i can use Decrep to slow the enemies. And with HF some enemies shattered and i could not use CE.

A regular fight
I used alot more hotkeys then usual, and sometimes it was quite frantic. A regular fight could go like this;

I Summon my Clay Golem infront of me to get the enemies attention. Then i throw Attract on one enemy on the far right side of the pack, and on one enemy on the far left side. The golem should be positioned in the middle, and often requires a recast since he is fragile. The rest of the pack gets Decrep. Then it's just a matter om spamming PN and letting my Merc whack away while making sure Attract, Decrep and Golem is activated/alive. When there's 2-3 corpses it's time to wreak havoc witch Corpse Explosion.

I never used Poison Dagger or Explosion in Hell. PN+CE could get the job done very fast.

Poison Immunes
Lower Resist was not a good solution to immunes. Even though it breaks them, my poison hardly did any damage to them. I hardly ever used this curse in Hell. Instead i took control of the group with Attract, Golem and Decrep. My merc could easily take down a few of them and then CE would take care of the rest.

I actually thought LR would be my most used curse, but Decrep is alot better.

Hell Ancients
Very easy! Life Tap on two of them and decrep on the one that throws axes. My Merc could then tank them, even though i had to feed him a few Full Rejuvs. I spammed PN and kept the curses running.

Hell WSK + Minions
I walked to keep my block at 75%. Constantly recasting my golem infront of me. If it was clear he would walk back to me, if not he would engage the enemies and and they would ignore me so i could curse them with Attract.

No Gloams until the Throne Room. DV would probably be better on Gloams then attract. Even though you have attract their lightning will pass through the attracted enemy and perhaps hit you. But i slowly took care of them, trying to cast attract on an enemy that was positioned in the back of the pack.

The minions where easy. CE is great on all the waves. Lister&Co was slowed by Decrep, and killed by Merc+CE. It did not seem like my poison did any damage to them.

Hell Baal
This was also an easy fight. Cast the golem ontop of Baal and then Decrep. Now he is slowed and your Merc can start to beat him up. Spam PN even though it doesn't seem like it's doing a whole lot of damage. Make sure Decrep is activated all the time. 10 minutes later he was dead.

Conclusion and future plans
Great character. Very fun to play, requires tactics. Can handle every situation in the game even with inexpensive gear. I would really recommend Max Block + Walk. Also get Attract instead of DV (or both to shut down ranged attackers even more easily).

He will be used for some Pit-running, mostly to just try him out and compare him to my Strafer and Trapper.

I'm relatively new here :) This is just a thread sharing my recent experience on hunting runes in Travincal using average gears. This is not a build, as I did not invent this build. Motivation:

It all started when I decided to play D2 from scratch recently. I used a MeteOrb Sorc to finish the game, and respec her into Blizzard Sorc to run Meph and Pindle. I got many awesome uniques and sets, but high runes seemed to evade me. Then, for obvious reasons, I dediced to run Travincal. I didn't have Inifinity, I didn't have Fanthom, not even HOTO, I didn't have the safety gear CtA either. Then, you pretty much guess it, my Blizzard Sorc was not very competent, and it was not even safe for her to run Travincal. It is a kind of a paradox where you need high runes to get high runes ...

Later on, during her Meph run, a +3 Bone Spear grim wand dropped, and it reminded me that a Bonemancer with maxed Corpse Explosion should be able to do the job in Travincal. So I built an Explosionmancer which I modified from mouseman's original build here. Indeed, this man rocks at p1 and is also decent at p3. All the gears here can be easily obtained from Hell Meph and NM Andariel. I think there are other cheap builds available for Travincal run (for example, I have a Zealot using Redeemer + Duress that can run Trav at p5), but I enjoy this one the most. Even if I get bored, I just go to CS and WSK for a change.

Mouseman's original build was using Homonculus. If I use Homonculus, then I need two 10 FCR rings and 15 FCR crafted amulet to reach the highest 125 FCR break point. However, I really want to use 2X SoJ for the skill and mana boost and my 28@ Mara's for the resist boost. Therefore, I need to use Spirit Monarch, and I have to put awfully a lot of stat points into strength to reach 156, which is painful. oh well ...

The Harmony bow helps me run through town quicker. I saw councils drop town portal quite often, so I tried to cast town portal, and go to Act 4. Eventually, I decided it was not worth it, as I constantly forgot to pick up portals, and it already took me time to pick up junks (Yes, I'm serious. I even pick up gold for gambling), and I don't want to waste more time.

The main features of this character:

(1) Safety


Maxed Bone Wall and Bone Prison boost Bone Armour to a ridiculous amount of absorbance. My HP is always more than half, and there is literally not even a single near death event throughout the whole game. Tyrael was so jealous of my power that he cast the portal to Destruction End in a place that I could not reach. However, it would not stop him being a Guardian. So, he is my only Guardian that reaches the Destruction End in an unusal way, not through the portal, but by clicking ESC. See the screen shot, lol!!!

(2) You have full control of the whole screen, even outside the screen sometimes

A Necromancer is well-known for his crowd control skills. With Dim Vision, Attract and/or Bone Prison, you want a monster stay where they are? They will stay where they are!

(3) Fast at p1

Do I even need to explain? 125 FCR with maxed Corpse Explosion, all the monsters become silent immediately. Hence the name Nortrom, name of the Silencer from DotA.

Travincal playstyle:

Preferably at p1, but also feasible at p3. Roll a map where all the Council are just in front of the entrance to the temple.

Cast Bone Armour, switch to Harmony bow and run through town. Originally, I cast Bone Prison to keep the Council in place, but I always have to wait for Bone Prison to disappear to pick up stuff, since they were usually killed before Bone Prison timed out. Now I figure out a new strategy: when the entrance get to the edge of the right hand side of your screen, just about to see the Council, cast Clay Golem on top of them, then immediately cast Decriptify or Attract, then they will stay where they are, attacking your golem or themselves. Now start to cast Bone Spear from afar. The key is that don't let your merc and yourself confront them and keep the Council in place. Otherwise, your merc won't survive. You are the one doing the killing, your merc is just there to provide Meditation aura. He sometimes got distracted by the monsters (Hierophants, Night Lords etc) nearby, which is perfect for you!

If the monsters surrounding you are hitting you, just tank and ignore them!! Most of the time, they won't hurt you. In some cases, you need to drink a health potion, but that's it. Just keep casting Bone Spear, and once you have your first corpse, cast Amplify Damage and start spamming Corpse Explosion.

Pretty straightforward, right? I hope soon, you will get something like this:

Normal & Nightmare
Like many have, I also made the mistake of maximizing the skellies first and then investing points into Nova and it's synergies at lvl 30. This made him a regular fishymancer until lvl ~45 where he equipped Trang's gloves and White wand. Since that moment Nova had no troubles taking out any monsters (except those PI skellies due to not having any -% PR).

Act 1
Rushed him to Outer Cloister and at lvl 69 I began doing Pit runs. Stopped at lvl 80 to continue with questing. Re-equipped him as well, putting full trang's set for the -% poison res and the other useful mods. Decided to go at /p1 to get to guardian faster even though he could manage /p3 hell creatures rather well.

Act 2
First major NDE in Act 2. Was feeling lazy and couldn't stand walking through Maggot Lair so i decided to teleport (with Naj's), one boss pack amp'ed be and then i tele'd into a champ (or boss, i didn't stick around to see). In a milisecond my life dropped, but was able to somehow hit a juvie and tele the hell out of there. This is a typical example of the carnage a psn/summonancer can do.

Act 3
Nothing really special about this one, was done in half an hour (teleing through the dungeons).

Act 4
Some very exciting moments here. Plain of Despair spawned with gloams, on two occasions I had to go back to town, resurrect my merc and raise the army. First time when a boss pack of gloams spawned near a boss pack of Doom Knights and champ pack of Pit Lords. Second time is a conviction boss pack of Gloams (took that screenie and ran away like a little girl). This is the first time I wished I had some Hexing GCs cause the radius of DV is really small. Chaos Sanctuary was easy, thought Pit Lords would be PI but it turns out they're just FI.

Act 5
Only one small NDE where I tele'd into Eyeback's gang but juvies saved me. Crystalline Passage spawned Gloams, melting my meat shield. Ancients were a pushover (decrepify ftw.). ToD also spawned Gloams, this time with a non breakable immunity and a bunchload of them in the actual throne. DV proved it was one of the best crowd control skills. Baal was easy but it took a long time to kill him.

Only thing is that skeletons are very fragile due to the low point investment, but they can hold their ground in the pits. Of course they can't kill anything but that's why there's Poison Nova. Now he's due for a change in equipment, gonna miss the ugly vampire.

Normal was pretty tough , as was nm , cause i had to spend points into prereq's , and my skelies were weak. Hell act 1-3 was easier than normal and nm , cause i could use CE at full eficiency (sp? ). Act 4-5 were hellish , my skelies were doing almost no damage . Baal wasn't hard , had to go one time to town to buy mana pots . It took about 5 minutes to kill him. You can see him dieing

Conlusion : this character is harder , and more interesting to play than regular fishy , cause you also do something , like firing bone spirits , prisoning sup-strong enemies , blah blah.

Because I had pretty decent -poison res from items, my nova killed the broken immunity baddies nice and fast :)

Some notes on the equipment:
Those rings aren't great, nor is the rest of my gear really. If I was really struggling then I may have spec'ed up the equipment. I had originally intended to replace the rings... but... kinda forgot. Ravenfrost / Dwarf Star would have been my choice probably. The Trang's gloves were very important. 25% extra damage is a huge boost and was definitely required. I'm still on the lookout for a white wand which is worth Dol+Io to replace the weapon.

Lets talk tactics:
I keep my bone armour on all the time, and it saved me a couple of times (often enough to justify that one point). Basically I let the skellies run forward and make a wall. Depending on the strength of the opponent I'd either use Decryptify, Amp Damage or Lower Resist on them, and then spam away with Poison Nova. Anything that started as Poison Immune wasn't worth Lower Resisting and then Poison Nova'ing. It was quicker to decrypt or amp and then corpse explode them. However, Poison Nova was very very useful against groups of low health enemies (such as those teleporting sprites in act 5, cold immune or fire immune skeletons, Fallen and their big brothers etc). The major problem came when there was a physical immune or poison immune pack that just cut through my relatively weak army of skeletons. More than once it ended with me running away and spamming poison nova until they were all dead or there were so few left that my merc could engage them while I rebuilt the skeleton army. The biggest struggle for me was Act 3 Hell. Based on my performance in Act 3 I didn't think I'd get to the end - its just because there were so many poison immunes. One thing that I should note is that my skellies were all but incapable of killing things. I had a very strong might merc equipped with Insight (eth thresher), an eth Duriel's Shell and a Guillame's Face and it made all the difference. Against poison immunes I wouldn't have been able to do too much without that first kill from the merc. My last piece of advice for remakes of this character: if in doubt, spam Dim Vision. Also, without the meditation aura I would have struggled a lot more.

In fact I would like to call him Gaurdian Frost-Eliot-Dickinson-Bishop-Ai-Updike-Tennyson-Sydney-Pound-Olga-Notley-Lowell-HD-GertrudeStein-Eliot (pronounced Luxary Yacht). You see, Eliot was the last character passed to me in Skunkbelly's latest Pass It On Tourney. And while he was the only character I played twice, I hardly recognized him when he came back to me (partly because I was trying to kill him the first time around :evil: )

My journey was a ton of fun. Thanks again Skunkbelly for organizing this. Every act a new character with a new build. And a limited choice of items ranging from useless to uber. I'll admit early on I was trying my best to sabatoge the characters I played (RIP Frost and sorry about that one crazy_bear). I'd have to say my two favorite characters were the most broken; Frost and Updike. I enjoyed Frost because it was challenging taking a barb through Act 1 adding all stat points to energy and having Taunt, Howl and Leap as your only useful skills. Also the only weapons I could use were my starting Hand Axe and an unrepairable Malus. Updike was apparently the result of Ohomemgrande having a bad day at work. She had points all over the place. But with a Peace armor I got a good strong Valk and I just GA'd everything from a safe distance.

Eliot was a surprisingly sturdy Bonemancer. I actually felt much safer with a Boner than I have with my previous experiences with a Summoner. His bonewall was just as sturdy as a Summoner's minions except they go where you cast them, stay put and are almost impervious. Only problems were piercing attacks, and as such my only NDE with him was to an extra strong, extra fast, cursed Serpent pack.

Ancient's were cake. I set up a maze of bone wall's around Madawc and Talic drawing Korlic to the lower part of the Summit. By the time they made their way to me Korlic had only 1/3 of his life left. So I retreated north laying bonewalls behind me, they were stuck again except Korlic who leapt over them and we killed him in isolation. I then got extremely lucky as Talic decided to have a conversation with my Golem, and didn't whirl him once. While he was occupied my merc took on Madawc toe-to-toe. I lined the pair up with bone spear and Madawc was quickly dispatched. The only scary moment came as my merc charged Talic. He was mowed down with a single pass of whirlwind. *Note to self: Don't get whirled* Thankfully Talic again picked up his discussion my Golem. Just had to recast a couple times and he fell to bone spirit. Total cost, two mana pots one full rejuv and one merc revival.

Baal was quite easy. Getting to him was the hard part. I got a very favorable roll on the way down, no Frenzytaur's. These things were the only creatures that truly frieghtened me with Eliot as a single normal one took an entire mana ball to take down, and they tend to swarm in packs. WSK2 had Serpent's, Bats, and Baal's Minions. WSK3 was AK's/OK's, horror mages, and Burning Souls (Merc died once to IM). Throne room had witches, vampires and Burning Souls. The most difficult part came with Baal's minions. Not actually killing them, but spawning them. Baal refused to spawn his minions until I was completely convinced they weren't coming (a few minutes usually) and then all of the sudden HORDE OF MONSTERS 😲 . Fighting Baal was just like fighting an obnoxious Izual. Could them give him a little bit more life please. And as usual he dropped crapola.

Overall I'm quite happy with how things turned out. I think I got pretty lucky with the way the characters came to me as they always fit my gear well, and I didn't get any druids. Also, without the twinking things would have been much harder. But this is the first time I've ever beaten the game solo, and only my second foray into HC (1st is parked in A3NM). If I had it to do all over again I would have tried harder to end with a sorc so I could run LK :wink2: .

This guy was an absolute blast to play. I love casting curses. Love Necrophil.... Necromancers. Love blinding everything. Love bone armor. Love love. Love Necrophil.. ugh... Necromancers! They're awesome!

Questing went pretty much as you would a fishymancer: Cast amp, and let your minions do the work. I must have downloaded some advanced AI pack and skins or something because these minions rocked. Never needed a body to raise one, never needed to resummon, never had any trouble with minion placement. The AI in them was awesome. They destroyed bosses like mad. I cannot for the life of me find the file I downloaded or where it would be, but I would highly recommend it! A++++++++++ SELLER! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Anyhow, I kept the rouge I got in act 1, as I had great AI minions, didn't need any other.

eerrr.... Actual questing/curse usage:

Dim vision everything. Believe this was the first skill I maxed. It was awesome in the act 3 Durance. Those little critters couldn't see anything! BLINDED BY THE LIGHT! Curse, what have you. It also would light up everything since everything in the radious has a nice little bulb above them. Then, depending where everybody else was, I would cast either AMP or Lower Resist. If drixx was coming up behind me, I would cast LR to help him out. If it was CDM, AMP it was. I mainly ran around blinding everything, then casting other curses as needed when the others caught up with me. By the time we hit act 5 normal, I had hit all the curses, and started working on CE. CDM was excited and decided they weren't needed anymore since I had that. I needed them to kill something first and be my meat shields. I didn't say that though. Drixx had his OP furyzon, so I would amp most everything for CDM/OMG to help kill if anything was left.

Amp damage gets rid of Physical Immunes. LR gets rid of Light Immunes. Decrip slows everything to a crawl. Gumpy slows everything to a crawl. Last two bosses I suppose. But still. Bosses did us no real harm. Slllooooowwwww mmmooooooottiiioooonnn foorrr me. AAhhhh Yeeaaahhhhh!!!

Anyhow, this guy was awesome. Don't believe I really needed to use Attact or Confuse, but I did a few times in the beginning, just b/c I was bored. After everything was bored, and the other guys destroyed everything + liberal usage of CE, nothing else really mattered. We blew through the game. It was pretty unreal.

After the Guardianship which CDM had to help me with since I missed the main group, I decided to try my hand at pit running/seeing how he did by himself. It was a bit more difficult. Would Oh OH!!!! I also used Bone prison/wall to block the guys in with some bosspacks! That was fun! Or, I would use them to stop some monsters that didn't get blinded. I didn't use it much since the only times I used them I did block the guys in... Ok.. I would have to blind everything, then boneprison everything, and wait for my little girl merc to kill something. Took a minute, but after she did, would amp stuff then CE. Kill mostly everything, but still slow. Respected to PoiNova with some in DV (Believe, it's at the top). Ended up dying. Oh well. I was sad since he was my first (always have that connection with your first), but I moved on to another :p :loving: :jig:

Anywho, it was a blast playing with these guys, and would [highly] recommend MPing with a couple of people - even if it's just once a week for an hour and half, it's still a blast playing with a couple others and joking around about everything.

At long last DrakonTheCursed has reached Guardian! For anyone wonder DrakonTheCursed is a Necromancer who is using primarily Curses to get through the game, and he has done so! There were some pretty close calls along the way, and using only curses makes the game pretty hard. (He was allowed to use some bone skills, Eg. Bone armor, Bone Wall, Corpse Explosion, etc. No Bone spear or Bone Spirit though.)

‘You bastard! You know I’ll find you again,’ Yu heard as he grabbed his sack of meagre possessions and fled the estate.

Some weeks had passed since Yu had run from Macsen’s estate, the one place where he was safe. The beatings he had received were a small price to pay for food and shelter. Very few people took notice of a shabbily dressed peasant, but he decided it was safer to take whatever he needed and move on. He flicked through the parchments of various legends and battles of the past that Eira had left in his sack before he fled. Yu’s mind wandered back to his last night in Macsen’s estate - of Eira’s slender figure lying in his arms. She set him free, but he was still trapped as a peasant with no future. He looked up at the line of caravans and wagons he had been following for three days. Setting the parchments in his sack, Yu rose, and moved towards the supplies wagon. His talent for going unnoticed had improved dramatically, but he longed to learn more about the great assassin, Cadeyrn, who had the ability to dampen the awareness of those around him.
Focus, he thought, glancing around. Again, the few people around were preoccupied, and payed him no heed as he moved forward, pausing moments later. Something was amiss. Yu looked at the caravan merchant, pacing slowly.
‘Morning sir,’ Yu called as he approached. ‘I’m heading south, and noticed your caravans come into the city this morning.’
The merchant grunted, and continued pacing. ‘South you say?’ he replied after a brief silence. ‘You look like you’ve done some heavy labour. I could use you if you’re interested. One of my workers was injured this morning. We’re heading to the Rogues Pass to supply the archers and other warriors heading there. You haul a wagon, and you can travel with us as far as you’re heading.’


The origin of Yu’s name came from his master, Macsen. When Macsen bought Yu to work in his estate, he didn’t care for the names of his servants. Macsen often barked orders at the boy – ‘You! Back to work!’ – until Yu ended up accepting that this was his name.
I had hoped to include it in the story, but it didn’t flow well without extending the entire story greatly. It still doesn’t really flow, but it is a quick draft, so it’s nothing perfect or anything. Just some back-notes.

Well, down to the specifics. Why make a peasant? Because Morathi likes torturing people in late-game tournaments. Normal and NM went by fairly easily, but Hell was an adventure. It suddenly became challenging, and frustrating at times as well.

Yes, Yu was in the Peasants Tournament, with some painful rules.

Main Rules:
1. Peasants were not allowed any heavy, metallic armours, nor were they allowed anything that belonged to powerful mages or warriors. They would gain too much attention from the nobles had they tried. No Sets or Uniques.
1. a. Anya had the special ability of personalising sets and uniques, allowing them to look dull, faded and worthless. Personalised sets and uniques could be equipped or given to the merc.
2. As a peasant, the work is physical and arduous. Very little time to spend on studying advanced magics or abilities. No active skills above tree-level 18 (passives and synergies were fine.)
3. As a peasant, there was little time spent studying and practicing powerful techniques designed to enchant armours or weapons with unique abilities. No Runewords. Crafting was allowed though.
4. Untwinked, and No ATMA extended stash. Single Pass.

Ramblings:
The general tactic was to find an area, cast Dim Vision, blinding everything in range, and amplify damage a couple at a time. Yu was initially intended as a MojoMancer, however, that quickly changed. In the end, he became a Jack-of-all-trades, Master-of-none, (or technically, a MojoBonemancer.)
Iron Maiden and Clay Golem was used against most Act Bosses throughout Normal and (most of) Nightmare.
As long as everything was blinded, very little posed a threat. Even gloams, whom we always love, weren’t terribly dangerous.

At times, I’d Dim Vision, then lure everything to the merc with Amp Damage, and CE the lot of them. That tactic proved pretty effective, but if I didn’t get a kill, the merc went down pretty quickly. He died a lot in fact.
Life tap was used as well against some superuniques and bosses to prolong the mercs life. That was when bonespear was used though, so I’d be doing slight damage and needed some tanks.

Some areas were just so easy. Blinding maggots prevents them from spawning young, making areas like the Maggot Lair very easy to get through. That coupled with a few CE’s of course. 😉

Diablo’s Little Fortress, with paned glass of evil forces. Love this place, but if only it initiated a side quest.

Against Normal Baal, I added extra points into Golem, hoping to slow him down. It didn’t quite work, and Baal ended up double casting occasionally, casting two abilities at once.

The Crystal Passage was potentially deadly, spawning masses of gloams and witches, however, with Dim Vision, Yu could slowly push his way forward. In addition, the Staff of Teleportation allowed him to manoeuvre himself to take on edge groups first, instead of running into the middle of them.

Hell Nihlathak and Vipers.
Yes, vipers spawned, and they absolutely tore apart my merc and golem. But slowly, exploding corpses and blinding anything I could got me to Nihlathak. After that was just exploding every corpse I could, and forcing Nihly to fight alone. After that, he wasn’t much of a threat.

Against the Ancients, I divided them, and cast Life tap, allowing myself to Bonespear. It worked effectively, but had to reroll them once due to two spawning Extra Fast.

Baals Minions weren’t that hard. Dim vision, Corpse explosion, and a merc that could pluck them off one at a time. There was this problem with a Multishot Achmel the Cursed, who reduced Yu to one hitpoint in a very short period.
Against Lister and pack who can’t be Dim Visioned, I lured them out, split them up, and left them be. I was close to levelling up, and the tournament gave a penalty to each level. That, and I got caught off guard by a different unique pack that would’ve made things difficult. 😉

Nightmare and Hell Baal were slowed enough to be completely bugged. As usual.

NDE’s:
Lots, lots and lots. Almost to a simple fire in Act 3 Hell, caused entirely by frustration. Thorned Hulks killed the merc so often and so easily, that I decided that I wouldn’t move until the monster I was fighting died. I was standing in the fire, and didn’t move. I couldn’t name all of Yu's NDE's. Poison got me down to 1hp on multiple occasions, random uniques putting Yu in hit recovery; trying to run through Act 5 without blinding (this actually nearly got Yu killed 4 times within about 1 minute.)
This nasty Urn Unique spawned with her minions, almost completely surrounding Yu.

Items:
The main items were shopped in Act 2 Nightmare. The Chromatic Small Shield was shopped, and socketed in Act 5. A beautiful untwinked item, giving 65 Resists to all. The Mercenary's items were found at different stages, the Lance put into use just before Hell, and Naj's Light Plate in Act 5 Hell.

Guardian Pete, Randomly Challenged Necromancer

(Due to lazyiness, I haven´t gotten around to writing this until now)

I managed to go all the way in "my own" tournament, Randomly Challenged II.

I rolled a Necromancer with a Barbarian (Act V) mercenary, which I think is one of the better combos possible, but it also meant that the path until I could hire my merc would be slow going.

I played v1.11, and used the following players settings:
/p8: Nearly all of Normal and NM, plus when opening sparkly chests and potential super chests on Hell
/p5: Nightmare cow level
/p3: Nearly all of Hell, plus Normal/NM Duriel, Diablo and Baal
/p2: Normal and NM Countess part of her floor (I switched after looting the side rooms with lots of gold and chests)
/p1: All Ancients battles, when entering Hell Act III temples and the final part of Hell (after Ancients)



With four mercless acts ahead of me, I understood that Pete himself would have to do a lot of fighting early on. The early stat points rolled well for Pete, giving him enough Strength (25) to use a Scepter 1-2 levels faster than you´d expect on average. He also got a point in Clay Golem at level 7. The Golem help was much appreciated, since late Act I is actually quite dangerous when you have no archer companion and much less life than usual. I rolled a point in Iron Maiden late in the act, making the Andariel fight easy. (Golem + IM is a tried and true act boss fighting method ever since Classic).

Pete managed to put together a 'Steel' Flail in the Far Oasis, and this was to remain his main weapon during the rest of his 'fighter phase'. Poison Explosion was good against the skeleton hordes in the tombs, both for cheap corpse destruction and for decent AoE-damage.

Forgotten Temple was a real test for Pete. See this post for details on that scary mess.

Act IV was very VERY slow going. I guess most of the damage Pete did to the monsters was the Open Wounds from his weapon.

Diablo was slain using Iron Maiden and tons of Clay Golems. The first thing Diablo did in the fight was to jail Pete with a Bone Prison. But Pete wasn´t born yesterday, so he switched to his Teleporting staff, and popped out of the prison. :badteeth:

Pete then just ran through Bloody Foothills and Frigid Highlands, stopping only to establish a foothold on the defense lines with Barbarian prisoners. This quest was the most important one in the game for him. How many characters can say that?

His prize was immense, a Barbarian companion that was ten times a better fighter than Pete. Gameplay became relaxed and very easy. Actually, pretty much the rest of the game was quite easy, due to some good item luck and getting some key skills in time. The most important event for the skills was getting a point in Revive in Act I NM. Revives made Drus much easier to keep alive and effective.


The closest Pete came to dying was in Act V Nightmare. He was in 'crazy MF mode' (sporting about +530% MF for Drus' kills) so he had neglected +life gear - he had only just above 500 life. In one of the ice caves, a group of Bone Spear-tossing snakes damaged Pete much more than I first realized. Since the spells didn´t cause Pete to scream in agony, I didn´t understand it was dangerous until I suddenly saw a near-empty life bulb! I got more careful after that, and once I started in Hell difficulty, I loaded up on +life gear.


With the stuff that was to become his endgame gear, Drus is the strongest merc I´ve ever had, and although Pete´s skill points distribution is abysmal, the key skills (Clay Golem, Golem Mastery, Amp, Dim Vision, Decrepify, Life Tap, CE and Revive) were plenty good enough to see him through. I did not park a single monster in the whole game, and pulled off my second v1.10+ Necromancer Guardian.

Random Thoughts
I needed +3 to all skills to get 5 zeal hits. Mara's and Vipermagi may have been a better choice, but I had the full Disciple set in the stash and no Mara's free, so decided to use it. On first sight, it seemed a great chice for this build. Nice resists (except lightning), strength and dext boost, +3 to all skills, 350% damage to demons. In retrospect I'm not sure if it is so great for this build. No life boost, no FHR and no AR. If I was building her again I would probably go IK belt, boots, gloves, Vipermagi, Seraph's Hymn and Kira's. But I decided to play it out as it's nice to have a full set character and it wasn't too bad, although not ideal.

In NM I tried energy shield for a bit of protection. This worked fine for a few NM Baal runs, but by Hell it was draining my mana too much. I put a point into Shiver Armour and this helped alot. I was far too low on life, so I levelled up to 81 in the Ancient Tunnels, moved some scrolls of TP into the belt instead of carrying the tome and dropped two SCs of balance. This gave me four slots to fill with SCs of Vita. It ws at this point I was really missing FHR and AR in my gear, as I could have got a lot more life into the stash.

The build was a bit lacking in crowd control. Nightfish recommended Darksight Helm for the Zerkazon, but I could have used it here. I would have changed helm, but by the time I realised my mistake I was in hell. I get 24 points of strength from the circlet, so by swapping helms I wouldn't have been able to equip the sword. So I was reliant on the Holf Freeze + Reapers from the merc. It was great when he is alive, but when he died, all I could do was teleport out of the fray. Teleport was also very useful for keeping the merc close. Dante, my avenger also used the same crowd control method but without teleport it was much more difficult to position the merc.

Another difficulty with this build was actually getting to use the sword. I had to make a concious effort to play with the sword, or I probably could have gone through most of the game with Frozen Orb alone. I restricted myself to only using Orb on Fire Immunes, and even then I still tried to use the physical damage from the sword to dispatch them as much as possible. Another trouble was, as the merc was enchanted too, he killed quicker than I did. But in the end I did manage to do more than my fair share of the killing sword in hand.

One strange thing playing this character is the attack animation. Instead of doing a mighty overhead strike like all the other characters do, she leans back and does some kind of ridiculous looking uppercut. No wonder sorceresses are not know for their weapon skills. You can see it in the picture linked above - very strange.

Overall, probably my least favourite of the sept. But then I wasn't really excited by her at the planning stage either, and maybe that was part of the problem. It's a shame to end the sept on a down note, but I guess you play the builds that most excite you first.

Random Thoughts
I was worried about this build in the beginning. It didn't help that Superdave and Insane Wayne had both made passive only naked guardians. If I couldn't make a twinked Matriach in softcore, it would be a bit embarrassing to say the least :undecided:

My main concern with this build was crowd control. I knew that my damage would be fairly low, so I would need to be in the thick of things slugging it out. Nightfish recommended Darksight Helm with the CoS charges, but in the end I found that I didn't need it. Dodge/Avoid/Evade seemed to do the job pretty well and Shaftstop is great for when a hit does get through. The merc with Holy freeze and a Reapers slows things down nicely, but needs a bit of looking after. I found that he needed me as much as I needed him. Add in an almost fully synergised Valk and Decoy and it all looks pretty good. Slow missilles was spammed whenever ranged attackers were about. Slowing Burning Dead archers, Spear Cats, Unravellers and even the charged bolts from Scarabs down to a crawl works wonders for safety. When there were no ranged attackers, I was using Inner Sight. I'm not sure if these two work together or not, but I assumed they were like curses so two cannot be active at the same time.

Well the build was built around the sword. Berserk seemed like a nice choice, but getting the damage up would be an issue. Initially I planned to use Darksight Helm and Mara's but, partly because I wanted the Mara for another build, I decided to go with Kira's and Seraph's Hymn. This added a nice chunk of damage to undead and demons, as well as AR. LoH made demons a fairly easy target, and 60% critical strike helps a lot. The main problem was with non undead / demons. Unfortunately this category includes some hard hitters - Yetis, Frenzytaurs and Scarabs, but generally they took a bit of time and went down eventually.

The Ancients were a different matter. They were too quick and I was doing too little damage. For the only time in the Sept, I had to twink on some backup gear. On came Kelpie Snare for the Merc and Guillaume's Face and Gore Riders for me. I took my resistances down into the red, but I gave it a go. First try I separated the three and cruhing Blow made short work of the first ancient. Unfortunately he was Fire Enhanced and his dying corpse explosion coupled with my low fire resist took me out too. Second time was no problem though.

All in all a pretty safe build and good fun to play. I enjoyed wading into packs with my little team of three. Replace the shaftstop with Fortitude (if you are rich enough) and you would have a very playable character.

I found a few useful but not great rares, but otherwise nothing of note.

Random Thoughts
Assassins are capped at 13FPA with 2h swords, even with BoS active. This makes the attacking slow, but the strength of the attack made up for it. The damage to demons from LoH and the damage to undead from The Vile Husk work beautifully together to significantly increase my damage against most opponents. Unfortunately, some of the more dangerous monstes do not fit into either of these categories - Thrashers, Minotaurs and Scarabs all hit hard. With 15% DR from fade and 13% from String of Ears their attacks were softened a bit, and only one crpse is needed for the Death Sentry to do its work.

I played hell at P1. After playing my remaining two sept chars through NM (they are fragile) I wanted to up the pace a bit. This character is probably one of the quickest and most versatile killers I have played at P1, but P3 slows her down a lot. A Reapers Merc is always useful, but his main function was the Blessed Aim - as I was finishing with Normal attack, missing was a problem when he died.

Treachery worked well for the build, especially for the huge chunk of IAS. I was using Fade anyway, casting at lvl 7 with my switch equipment. This got my resists maxed, so I didn't need to rely on Fade triggering from the armour. I also got free lvl 15 Venom, which added a bit of damage.

Overall one of the most fun builds I have played, and definately one of the coolest looking. The drawback is that she is a loner - the loss of effectiveness of Corpse Explosion at higher player setting (or when MPing) reduces her effectivness considerably. But if you used a higher speed weapon (Ribby?) she would probably work well, at the expense of style.

Random Thoughts
Probably one of the safer characters I have played. In many ways it felt like playing a necro with a smaller army and a strong attack of my own. I have decrep from the Reapers Toll and blind from the Ravens, and lots of targets for monsters to engage with the wolves. Bosses were especially easy, thanks to the Reapers and the slow from the Crainte Vomir.

The weapon was chosen primarily for it's speed. As most people know, on weapon speed is everything for a were character, so the Crainte fitted in well here. The other mods were good too, just a shame the damage isn't higher.

Random Thoughts
This character was made following Asmodeous' guide, pretty much to the letter. Big thanks to Asmo for posting it.
Nightmare was easy. So was some of Hell for that matter, as I was MPing with 3 sorcs. The conviction aura was great for them, but I hardly needed to swing the sword.
Playing solo was fine, on P1 most monsters go down in 1-2 hits. Crowd control is the biggest problem. Staying close to the merc solved this, his Holy Freeze and Decrepify slowing things down nicely. Problem was, if he died, I died, unless I could run away. This made play a bit slow, but challenging and enjoyable.
Biggest problem was when I got to the throne for the first time. It spawned Horadrim Ancients, Dolls & Gloams, and a boss pack of HAs near the steps. I died and couldn't get my body back. As fast as the merc killed the dolls & gloams, the HAs ressurected them. So I had to S&E and clear the botton two levels of the WSK again.
Overall an interesting & fun character to play. And he looked good, which (you may be starting to realise by now) is important for my characters.

The Kurgan - Patriach

He came from the steppes of Russia. Nobody knew his real name, they just called him after the tribe he came from. A tribe whose name made the blood run cold. The Kurgan.

Another themed build from me, this time inspired by the character played by Clancy Brown in the 1986 film Highlander. Skills wise he is a straight WW Barb, but I have tried to replicate the look form the film. Have a look at the pictures in the Wikipedia entry and the pictures below. If you haven't seen the film, it's a cult classic, rent it. Don't be put off by the useless sequels or the TV series. The Wiki has some great infromation on the character's background, so I'm not going to write it all here.

Random Thoughts
He was pretty much a cookie cutter build, just built with a different look than the norm. Vampire Gaze is a great helm, but getting the armour to look right meant I had to patch up resists in other areas. Duress ot Lionheart would have been great normally, but they just don't look the same.

He is my first true melee pat, and I enjoyed playing him. I thought Beserk would be ideal for Physical Immunes, but now I'm not so sure. The trouble is that many of the PIs are mana burn. I was going to make a Passion Beserker Axe for other characters, but my experience from this build has made me reconsider.

Retirement plans - not sure, he may yet be seen in a MP Baal run every now and again.

Next Up: BF/DT/DS Assassin, currently in Hell A2.
