its true that this isn't so much of a 'low lvl' thing anymore. but when you see a lvl 70 sorc running around with rares that make bladebuckle, bloodfists, nagels, and +1 escuchata's look godly, you want to help them out. This happens more than i would like to think it does.
granted, the shako, occy, lidless, soj requests are just too much, but there is a middle ground. what i've been saying from the beginning is it all depends on what gets donated. the people that spend a lot of time mfing will find a lot of really nice items they wouldn't ever use. for those people, why not donate those items.
i share blazing mary's comments about not finding these items. until just recently, i've never found an occy or shako, and i've not found a soj on ladder. i found an occy recently, but i still want the shako. i've found 2 sojs in about 2-3 yrs of continuous play (both on classic, one got rolled back).
ishrafael7: about the stealth armors, those are great items. from talking to the people that are getting help from the account, they aren't really knowledgable about the game. they don't know about the leaf staff, or the stealth armor. so they are great items to have because they are very useful.
EDIT: decoy_sj: i like the idea of doing a 'giveaway' thread like the SPF, but that is single player, and i can't think of how to port that over to realm play. which is mainly because i can't think (school, lack of sleep...), but if you have an idea, speak. i can't see how it would be too different from what is currently happening. i mean, we can't just send out the acc/password to anyone who asks, that has been tried before and failed.
