Item Upgrading With Cube

OK guys...how the minds do wander...Back to topic though.

What I really was asking is how do I know what upgrades to what? For example: I did not know that my Templar Coat would turn into Hellforge Plate. I also don't know what other armor and weapons upgrade to. How do I know? Do I just look at the pictures in the item guides and assume that it will upgrade to the next level higher item that looks the same??? Maybe a dumb question...but I'm ignorant and need info to get educated.

Again, I do not want to waste runes 'experimenting'

Look at the 3 pages of Armor on Arreat Summit. Print them out and compare. the graphic stays the same (for the most part) as you upgrade. See what you have EX. Shaftstop is Boneweave, when up'd from Mesh Armor. This just may be the best upgrade IMO.

A Kuku is pretty nice as a novelty once Up'd but that's it. If you get into a friendly duel (wow that is an oxymoron) but anyway. I have one on a Pali for few duels that are with friends and we are goofing off. It does nice damage and is a surprise because the color changes when you up so no one thinks of the fire damage.

edit: Que-Hegan's Wisdom is also a nice upgrade to Achron Plate

the item graphic will stay the same, the order they're listen on arreat or dii.net will remain the same, for example

quilted armor=ghost armor=dusk shroud
leather armor=serpentskin=wyrmhide
hard leather=demonhide=scarab husk

etc.

also, as I did a search for a post of alain's here
http://www.rpgforums.net/showthread.php?t=153542

in this post he mentions how lvl req works for upgrades

When upgrading, lvl req = Higher item's Lvl req +5 when going from Normal to Exceptional.

And when going from Exceptional to Elite, it's +7.

what this means, is that if you upgraded Guardian Angel to a Hellforge Plate, hellforge has lvl59 req so you would add 7 to find the lvl req is lvl66 for a Guardian Angel Hellforge Plate
