Introducing Tovak the Twinked Tesladin

Tovak is named after author Marc Alan Edelheit’s dwavern paladin. Having just finished a Frost Zealot I wanted to use as little as possible of the same gear. So, breaking with my traditional approach of not using swords I decided to go with swords as much as possible. It is also fitting that Tovak carried a sword in the books and since in the book Tovak is given his gear by his god I should give him the best that I could.

With that in mind I made Crescent Moon and Grief Phase blades before I even started. I also made a Passion Dimensional blade, but didn’t use it. At the beginning of Hell, the Runeword bug bit and I cubed a Ber from the two Sur runes that I had and made Chains of Honor. Then when an Ohm dropped in Act 4, I made a Call to Arms phase blade.

Finally, I decided to go with a Cold Rogue instead of the Fire Rogue, but that I would not use the Faith Bow. My intent was to equip her with the Delirium helm, an upped Witchwild String bow and some armor. I was disappointed with the Witchwild bow as the Amp damage didn’t happen very often, 2% isn’t much, but it seemed way less than that. Finally, in Hell Act 4 I switched it for a Harmony Great Bow and Fortitude Armor and she stopped dying so often and actually contributed a little. Frankly, for much of Nightmare and Hell the only reason I kept her around was to cast Confuse.

For Normal and Nightmare he was invincible and really over powered everything. The reason he finished at level 87 is because I had no deaths in Normal and Nightmare (a first for me) and that in Hell I cleared the blood moors, Den of Evil, Cold Plains and the Burial grounds all at Players 8 and then played at players 4 until I had cleared the Outer Steppes in Act 4. I died 8 times in Hell, but at least 5 of those were from inattention or sheer stupidity.

Forge drops: NM a Sol and Hell a Lem

The Outer Steppes in Hell were very good to me on my first clear I found an Ohm and a Pul and a Titan’s Revenge. Then on a second clear trying out Call to Arms I found my very first Stone of Jordan.

Thoughts on Equipment

My decision to use as little equipment over again from my Frost Zealot (Raven Frost and HoZ were the only two items I reused) meant no Laying of Hands, Gore Riders, Thundergod’s Vigor, Mara’s ammy or Fortitude armor. After looking at a bunch of gear I ended up on using the three pieces of the IK set. Combining all of the gear stats and bonuses gave me:

All of this is nothing to sneeze at, but the final deciding factor was the additional 5% IAS of the 3 piece bonus over the over the 20% IAS on the Laying of Hands gloves. This meant that I only needed 12% more IAS to make the 4FPS break with my Grief Phase blade. I took care of this by socketing Griffon’s eye with a fervor jewel, thus giving me more options with what to use as an amulet.

Originally I was planning om using Arkaine’s Valor and Highlord’s Wrath until I decided to make Chains of Honor. The final decision on making the Chains of Honor was a combination of how to handle resists in Hell and have adequate life leach in Hell. I didn’t want to use Mara’s and the rare amulet I had been wearing in Nightmare also had 5% leach. The Bul Kathos ring only offered 3% leach which I considered inadequate by itself. I also wanted to minimize the number of charms I needed for resistances. Chains of Honor took care of all three. The 8% LL meant that I could keep the BK ring for the +1 skills and put up with the measly 3% LL and other mediocre attributes.

Since I didn’t need the additional IAS from or Lightning resists from Highlords, I went with Seraph’s Hymn for the +2 to all skills and the +2 to defensive skills. Plus combining the damage to demons from CoH, Grief and Seraph’s I had more damage to demons than Laying of Hands provides, so while that 350% would have been nice I didn’t really miss it.

Thoughts on Weapons

Since this was my first time playing with swords I tried to experiment with some unique and set swords along the way.

In addition, I also tried Light Saber and Azurewrath. I actually used Azurewrath as my alternate weapon for PI/LI monsters till Made Call to Arms.

Death’s Touch and Angelic Sickle are both awesome beginning weapons. I went with Death’s touch this time and I really didn’t need to switch it out when I did.

The Atlantean is a great mid game weapon and I really didn’t think that Crescent Moon was all that much better. Frankly, I was disappointed with Crescent Moon and didn’t look back when Grief became available.

Based on my experience of two zealots the two weapons that offer big reductions to cold or lightning resistances are not the best weapons available.

Thoughts on skill distribution

There are two build guides that discuss Tesladins. The excellent “Build your own Zealot” by Kitteh and Tesladin by Wurmer. Wurmer doesn’t think much in putting 20 points into Zeal and likes to have a backup attack. Based on my Frost Zealot my initial plan was that I didn’t need a backup attack for the Lightning immunes and the few PI/LI monsters I’d find could be handled by another weapon on switch or with help from the rogue who would have cold damage.

I started questioning this plan in Nightmare Act 2 having run across some LI monsters plus the Lightning towers in the Arcane sanctuary and I realized that I would have to rethink how to handle the LIs. I was very familiar with static from my Frenzy barb using Stormlash as one of his weapons. Unfortunately, Crescent Moon casts static half as often as Stormlash and also has much less average damage than Stormlash or Heaven’s light. As a result, it simply takes too long to take down LI monsters using its physical damage.

Once I had Grief, I realized that while it was a vast improvement over Crescent Moon It still wasn’t as deadly as the Heaven’s Light that I had used on my Frost Zealot. As a result, I decided that I did need a second attack and ended up putting 4 additional points into Holy Freeze and 2 points into resist cold and instead of switching weapons I would switch auras. This paid additional dividends when I put Call to Arms on switch as I didn’t have to worry about what to do when I ran across PI/LI monsters.

This is ultimately a combination of skills and weapons choices. I’d been puzzling over why it was so much easier for Heikki to kill cold immunes than for Tovak to kill Lightning immunes and the answer is that Heaven’s Light and Fortitude do more damage than Grief and Chains of Honor. I finally did a direct comparison at level 82 with 30 to zeal and 17 to Sacrifice. I imported Heaven’s Light and Fortitude to put them on Tovak for a direct comparison using the super trustworthy LCS.

On an average damage basis that is 1,274.5 hit point difference per hit. I had two sockets on the Heaven’s Light with a total of 59% ED, but no IAS. As a result, while Grief hits the 4 FPS limit, Heaven’s Light is only 6 and will never reach 4 FPS. I could get it down to 5/5/5/9 with two IAS jewels. Other than the frost zealot guide neither the build your own zealot or Wurmer’s Tesladin guide even mention Heaven’s Light, yet it has to be considered one of the top choices for any Zealot. Yes, you want one with +3 to skills and 2 sockets.

Interestingly, I found a lot more LI/CI monsters in Hell than I did PI/CI so, I was glad that I had maxed Zeal and dumped as many points as I did into Sacrifice. I also found that about the only time I used Holy freeze on plain LI monsters was packs of LI frenztaurs.

I do think Wurmer is clearly wrong to only sink 4 points into zeal. Yes, you get the five swings, but none of the increased damage and AR that zeal and sacrifice provide.
