Im confused!

This is a question i have been wondering for years. Is Duriel a Lesser Evil, or something Diablo summoned from the abyss. And if Duriel is a lesser evil, then who are the other 2 lesser evils?

Andariel - Lesser Evil
Duriel - Lesser Evil?
Mephisto - Prime Evil
Diablo - Prime Evil
Baal - Prime Evil
??? - Lesser Evil
??? - Lesser Evil

No. Izual was Tyraels Liuetennate (sorry for spelling), but he led an assult on the hellforge. He was then captured by the Prime Evils and tortured until he gave up heavens most gaurded secrets. He was then bound within the form of a terrible creature and forced to reside in hell for all eternity.

Duriel is a lesser evil i believe. And i *think* there are other lesser evils by the name of Belial, the lord of Lies and another one i think...

Prime evils:
Diablo, Lord of Terror
Mephisto, Lord of Hatred
Baal, Lord of Destruction

Lesser evils:
Belial, Lord of Lies
Azmodan, Lord of Sin
Andarial, Maiden of Anguish
Duriel, Lord of Pain

Taken from the Diablo manuel.

I recal that there was an uprising in hell and lesser evil banish diablo and his brothers to earth...

It has to do with the sin war. In a nutshell:

- heaven and hell happily made war on each other for aeons
- then mortals arrived.
- both sides realised that mortals would hold the key to final victory
- the big three turned all their effort on swaying the mortal realm to their cause
- the lesser four didn't agree
- lesser four teamed up and banished the big three to the mortal realm
- belail and azmodan then fought amongst each other to see who will rule hell
- big three did their thing. tyrael did his thing. the horadrim did their thing and we all know what happened.

Ha ha ha! LOL! Best summary I have ever read. I wish history was this funny and short.

Little known fact: The Prime Evils aren't really banished from the mortal world when we defeat them in game. Tyrael sends them to b.net where they're simply forced beyond their will to create "free here" games and watch the people who join - ala-rehabilitation-scene-in-A-Clockwork-Orange - over and over and over again. Word in Sanctuary is, after six hours of this - Baal tried to Hoarfroste his own eyes out.

Duriel is a lesser evil, lieutenant to Baal, which is why he appears when Baal gains his freedom. Andariel is another lesser evil, Mephisto's lieutenant, as it was Mephisto who was first to corrupt the soulstone which bound him and began terrorizing Kurast, then sent her to destroy any would-be heros trying to track Diablo. If you go by the whole story, Diablo was supposed to have a lieutenant, as well, and he tracked Diablo down in an attempt to free him with Mephisto's help. I'm just not sure if we should believe the Hellfire story and assume it's Nakrul.

dont believe hellfire it's made by sierra!

*digs out his D1 manuel*
*flips to the history section*
*clears throat*
“Seven is the number of the powers of Hell, and Seven is the number of the Great Evils.â€

Duriel, the Lord of Pain
Andariel, the Maiden of Anguish
Belial, the Lord of Lies
Azmodan, the Lord of Sin

These are the true names of the lesser of the Great Evils. For ages uncounted each have ruled over their own domains within the Burning Hells, seeking absolute dominion over their infernal brethren. As the Lesser Four continuously vied for the control of those forces that dwelled within their realms, the Greater Three held absolute power over the whole of Hell. The Lesser Four used dark and evil measures in their quest for power, and herein begins the legend of the Dark Exile.

Mephisto, the Lord of Hatred
Baal, the Lord of Destruction
Diablo, the Lord of Terror

These are the Prime Evils of Hell that wielded their power as a dark, sovereign triumvirate. The Three Brothers ruled over the Lesser Four by brutal
force and malicious cunning. Being the eldest and strongest of the Evils, the Three Brothers were responsible for countless victories against the armies of the Light. Although they never held sway over the High Heavens for long, the Three were justly feared by enemies and subjects alike.

With the ascension of Man and the subsequent standstill of the Great Conflict, the Three Brothers began to devote their energies to the perversion of mortal souls. The Three realized that Man was the key to victory in the war against Heaven, and thus altered their rigid agendum that they had propagated since the Beginning. This change caused many of the Lesser Evils to question the authority of the Three, and so brought about a great rift between the Prime Evils and their servitors.

In their ignorance, the Lesser Evils began to believe that the Three were
afraid to continue the war with Heaven. Frustrated by the cessation of the war, Azmodan and Belial saw the situation as their chance to overthrow the Prime Evils and take control of Hell for themselves. The two demon lords made a pact with their minor brethren, assuring them that the wretched plague of humanity would not deter the ultimate victory of the sons of Hell. Azmodan and Belial devised a plan to end the stalemate, achieve victory in the Sin War and ultimately ride the bloody crest of the Great Conflict straight into the very arms of Armageddon. Thus, a great revolution was set into motion as all of Hell went to war against the Three Brothers…

The Brothers fought with all of the savagery of the Underworld, and to their credit, annihilated a third of Hell’s treacherous legions. In the end, however, they were overcome by the Horned Death led by the traitors Azmodan and Belial. The Prime Evils, weakened and bodiless, were banished to the mortal realm where Azmodan hoped that they would remain trapped forever. Azmodan believed that with the Three set loose upon humanity, the Angels would be forced to turn their focus upon on the mortal plane - thus leaving the Gates of Heaven abandoned and defenseless. Those few demons who still pledged allegiance to the Three Brothers fled the wrath of Azmodan and Belial, escaping to the realm of Man to seek out their lost Masters.

As the warfires died out upon the battlefields of Hell, Azmodan and Belial began to argue over which of them held the higher authority. The pact that they had made quickly fell to ashes as the two demon lords took up arms against each other. The legions of Hell that remained were polarized behind either warlord, launching themselves into a bloody civil war that has lasted to this day…

Shamelessly quoted from the original diablo manuel, page 63 and 64. I can post more if anyone wants me to. I just wanted to point out that duriel and andy are not liuetenants. they are high ranking demons, just lesser in rank and power to the big three.

Read it, loved it, ignored it. Well anyways, I think we can conclude that it is a rocksolid history. We all clear the game now in a few minutes, so I give credits for your interest in the history behind it. There must have been some money going to the people who made that up.

Doesn't Izual, after he is "slain", indicate that the Three being "banished" from Hell was a put up job, a plot dreamed up by the Three (and the Four) to gain a foothold in the mortal plane and then create Hell on Earth?
I'm sure I remember this from the Izual quest - or maybe I dreamt it - or maybe I'm playing way too much D2.

Yes, that's it, I'm playing way too much D2.

Carry on, everyone.

Don't forget Cain. He's the ultimate evil dude... Fooled you all into freeing him from the cage in Tristram.. all for the price of a rare pos ring.

The bit with izual and the three planning to be banished could be plausable. Izzy was captured and twisted into the icky creature he is today before the whole rebelion thing.
