How to level a merc?

well I'm planning on getting an act 2 might merc in a level or two (28-30, as soon as I kill nm andy) and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on leveling mercs. I can't get them to keep up to save my life. I always keep them rezed, and let them do a decent amount of killing, but they lag behind pretty quickly. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

And if there is already something up on the subject, sorry. I looked pretty hard

The other day i hired a nm act2 merc for my new javazon ... the merc was lvl 43 i think ( i was 80 or something)
I did some cow runs in nm ... javazon+titans+lightning fury+cows = ultra fast and easy merc lvling
(did it until he was lvl 75)

The cow level is what i used for my merc in 1.09 (it should still work here too)

Normal cows i think works up until 35 or so (decently, then the exp starts to go too slowly).

I find baal runs a bad idea because the merc dies too easily (the poison ends up killing him, if not, he has such low hp's after the poison the hydra's kill him)

Well i have mercs that are = to my chars lvls on multipal chars... which are all above lvl 80, for me i just did tons of cow runs and tomb runs (yes Tals Rasha Tomb). I can tell you that this place is under rated! I join games like "act3 help" etc, with 8 players in it! Then i will disband from the group and go into Tals tomb and my merc will be lvling like crazy!!

If u can get up to it i sujest u give it a try, also the monsters in there are easy to kill!! Then once he is above lvl 70 or so it's baal runs all the way!

Hey there,
Rules fer merc lvls:
1~They get more exp when they kill themselves
2~Still share exp when u kill so if you have a crowd control type char,Sorc or strafe zon multi zon etc, theyll lvl up fast enough
3~Most important, they get best exp when their lvl is within 5 lvls of the monsters lvl
Without knowing what monster vls are in all diffs and all acts,it gets kinda tricky...easiest is to go to areas with merc window open,go kill some stuff n see where they get best exp, when they lvl up,keep fighting and see if they r still gettin decent exp,if not, easiest is to move to next area after that.

Well it looks like I'll be in a1 nm for a bit, he can't survive in nm cows very well. Hmm, do you guys think it would be better to let him kills stuff one at a time, or spam teef? And any suggestions where in act one to go?

I suggest finding a paladin to cow with. With my hammerdin I had conc on my merc and holy bolting him, it did really well. When the merc was lvl 18 I put a pike on him (a2 normal mode defiance) and took him to shenk with conc and holy bolt he tanked shenk. It worked just as well in nm.

Just bribe a paladin to keep conc and holy bolt on yur merc with items or the drops or sumthin.

The merc gets 3x more exp when it gets the kill. Pindle is good for lvling too except they fixed the exp after first kill thing.

The merc gets more xp if he does the killing. BUT, if you can kill multiple groups of monsters faster, your merc can gain xp just as fast, and with less liklihood of dying. I like cow levels because there large packs of monsters. If you can kill them quickly (ie before they kill your merc), it shouldn't be a problem. I believe NM cows are monster lvl 65. Norm cows are mlvl 35 I believe. If your merc is around lvl 30, norm cows is the way to go. Don't forget that your merc's level can never be higher than your own lvl.

EDIT: Correction - your merc can be higher lvl than you if you hire them at a higher level. But they won't level up until you catch up to them.
