I have always used mercs from the years on Bnet and now in SP - I can't even imagine playing without one =D They are generally Act 2 guys and in the earlier stages I go with lots of socketed weapons and life leech using either skulls or amns and later on PDR gear if I have it.
I had a very twinked Act 5 barb on Bnet that was an absolute cainer - I remember he once 2 hit my boyfriends sorc when we were duelling hehe. I also LOVED merc duels!
