How is an enchantress viable?

Depends what weapon she's using, surely? An Enchantress wielding an upgraded Ribcracker (for example) will probably be pretty good at killing herself when IM'ed...

I can't believe noone mentioned a demon machine. You can achieve very decent speed, stay away from danger since you're not melee and the twide applied fire dmg still works since demon has the exploding arrows. I once build a sorc and around act 2 or 3 nightmare I could equip the machine, the I blasted trough to hell in no time. I lost her out of sight then.. since I don't mp.

Does anybody know the IAS breakpoints for a Chantress using a Passion Phase Blade? I can't seem to find a table around :(

I just got to level 54 and started using Passion, Zealing Sorc is *deadly*.

You need 47 off-weapon IAS with passion in a phase blade.

With a Passion Phase Blade you need 65% IAS to achieve a 7 Frames zeal (max for a sorc)

You need 40 IAS from Gloves/amulet/armour/helm + 25 IAS from Passion Phase Blade

For a phase blade (-30 speed 1-handed swinging weapon)
11/8 30 IAS
9/8 54 IAS
10/7 65 IAS

This are the numbers i've seen last days

I found that a melee enchantress was the nuts up to NM but really slowed down in hell. Certainly doable, but don't plan on having a killing machine.

A 7-frame zeal is a terrible thing if you are getting in over you head (which melee sorcs have a habit of doing in hell). There's not much worse (other than a fend-whiffing zon) than starting a zeal cycle and then having your sorc die because she couldn't tp away in time. Worse is trying to run/tele away from a bad situation and accident clicking on a monster - starting that 10 minute zeal cycle all over again.

One option in hell would be to wear a Stone armor and cast the clay golem while holding a bloodmoon. But of a but exploit, but the extra semi-durable minion can be very handy (plus you can enchant him to do some damage! ).

If I did another one, I'd probably go with frozen orb as an alternate skill. It's a bit out of character for the build, but I think it would make for a fun balance: whack the critters you're good at killing and just orb the rest to get them out of the way.

This is interesting. I´ve only managed to make a Passion weapon for one of my characters (just recently with my 2h-sword amazon) and I find that I am actually glad her Zeal is only at level 1. The dual-swing takes only slightly longer than a regular attack. Perhaps a melee Encantress is better off with a lower level Zeal than what you seem to describe?

Usually, a well used Teleporting technique is so good at separating enemies that I think a melee Enchantress can get by just fine with, say, an 11 fpa normal attack. In HC, I would probably keep a weapon/shield with Terror charges on the switch no matter what weapon I was using...

I like 7 Frames zeal :)

Like others say playing in hell is another game, i don't have problems with a fast zeal (+4 to all skills from gear gives her extra swing's) I have 90 FHR(7 frame hit recovery) and that helps a lot.

Teleport is a big advantage that a enchantress have.

And is very nice in a party, i'm planning another one with a Demon Machine :)
and a big static Field Range, just to play in a party.

Well it better be viable, im planning a wirts leg weilding enchantress. AS mongo mentions in the excellent guide, FM is added twice (once from slvl when cast, once from slvl when striking) yet the skill info in game doesnt mention this, so its misleading. The character screen has the real damage.
Also, you can get lots of +fire skills or +all skills with this build, so you should be able to get slvl30 enchant if you twink. Its not so bad then. And you still have enough skills to work on a backup skill that doesnt need synergies (or only 1) or as i plan, a defensive skill.

These numbers are right. My numbers were outdated (from a few months ago). The amazon basin did some great research on this, that I was able to look up. This makes an IAS jewel + IK combo a really nice setup to hit 40 oias.
