Help with installation and patch issue

a couple days ago, i found out that i was playing on patch 1.11, and some1 told me 1.11b was more up to date. I tried downloading 1.11b from blizzards website, and i couldn't. I decided to uninstall and reinstall the game, and now i am having trouble reinstalling. Error message: unable to save uninstall data file. Installation aborted. Blizzard's website had a solution to this problem, as it told me to delete these 3 files: DIIunin.dat, DIIunin.exe, DIIunin. I deleted the last two, but cant seem to find the first one. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thx in advance

It's not the best, but Windows' search can sometimes help. If worst comes to worst, there is also a rollback tool for Windows ME and XP to return your computer to a previous state, sometime before you uninstalled perhaps.

It might be that you were trying to download the expansion patch and you only have classic installed, or perhaps you were downloading the classic patch but have the expansion installed.

In any case, the website says:
"The best way to obtain the patch is by connecting to Battle.net through the game."

If you connect to battle.net, then if your patch needs updating, it will automatically do so. Even if you end up uninstalling and reinstalling completely, and even if you play single player, etc, this is the easiest way to go about getting a patch.

This is the best way to do it, but there isn't much difference in the two patches though.

i used windows search, thats how i found the other two, but the first one on the list is till not showing up. I made copies of my save files, and deleted everything else in my diablo 2 folder, but it didnt help. The patch issues are pretty insignificant compared to the installation issues, so if u can, try and focus on the installation problems first. thx again

Can't help ya with the other file, never had a problem with the reinstall. Here are my suggestions for things to try:

step 0: Trying to uninstall
Go to control panel, and click add/remove programs. Sometimes Windows likes you to go through this. Just click remove/alter or whatever the buttony thing is on diablo 2, if it still exists. If diablo ii is no longer a recognized installed program, or if the same problem persists, proceed to step 1.

step 1: System Restore
To use the system restore utility - click start, programs, accessories, system tools, and system restore. A wizard will pop up to guide you through it. Hopefully you've got some setting set correctly that will allow you to restore to some restart or something prior to the uninstall. If you cannot restore to a time before the uninstall, proceed to step 2.

step 2: Being smarter than the machine
If both have failed, you can sometimes "reinstall" without uninstalling. (This is also an easy way to have two versions of diablo ii on your computer, if say you have two cd keys etc) Rename the diablo ii folder (probably in program files) to something like diablo ii old. Then insert the installation CD. Whenever I have done this, the cd acts like there is no installed version of diablo ii on your machine. If this works, you can probably just delete the old folder.

So those would be my things to try. If you're scared to use the system restore, you might want to skip to step 2 - it's a quick and easy test.

Hope this helps, if not, let me know.

when i went to the add/remove programs on the control panel, the diablo 2 file did not show up in the list of programs. Renaming the folder is out of the question, as i deleted the entire folder, after making a copy of the save files. That same error message is still popping up. As for using the system restore function, that'll have to wait until my dad gets home lol, as i dont have administrator privileges to use it. Thx for the tips, tho, and any other ideas would also be appreciated.

While you're at it, defragment your HDD.

defragment your HDD?

Can be found in accessories, system tools, disk degragmenter. Should be done every so often to increase speed, etc. Probably a good idea in general... not sure how it'll help this case though? Zod, what's the thinking behind this?

So what kind of error message are you currently getting Dwade?

Error message: unable to save uninstall data file. Installation aborted. Blizzard's website had a solution to this problem, as it told me to delete these 3 files: DIIunin.dat, DIIunin.exe, DIIunin. I deleted the last two, but cant seem to find the first one.

I suppose it might be hidden. When you bring up search, and after you click the search all files or folders, there should be an advanced options lil arrow thing. If you click on this, there should be a checkbox that says Search hidden files or folders.

Alternatively, the .dat file is likely in the same folder as the .exe and the other, so you can open that folder, click tools, folder options, click the view tab, and click the show hidden files or folders bullet.

Let me know if it was hidden.

Did you already reinstall? If you deleted the original D2 folder, that could be a problem. You're supposed to use the uninstall utility that comes with the game.

all right 2 things,
1st to answer norvi11eroger, i tried searching for the .dat file with the hidden files ooption checked in both my computer and local disk drive, nothing turned up, if im searching in the wrong place, let me know.

2nd, to answer zodijackyl, i am not able to reinstall, and i dont remember how exactly i uninstalled diablo 2.....lol think i just looked under diablo 2 in all programs in the start menu, and clicked uninstall.

When did you delete the directory? I assume after you uninstalled but before you tried to reinstall?

You might want to replace the diablo ii directory. If you haven't already emptied the recycle bin, go into it, find the directory, and hit restore.

Try to reinstall with the directory there. If that doesn't work, search for the .dat file in the directory (or have it show hidden files and folders). If that doesn't work, let us know.

It might also possibly be the case that uninstalling would work only (or best) for someone with administrator privaledges? That I don't know much about, sorry.

edit: that should be a sufficient search

i deleted the directory after i uninstalled, and figured the missing .dat file was somewhere in there, so thats why i deleted it. i did empty the recycle bin tho =(. Oh and id like to thank u guys for helping me with this, even tho we havent been able to find a solution =P. really appreciate it

i guess if we cant fix it, it'll be a good reason to quit diablo once and for all lol, just sucks that it happens on a day when i get sick and cant do anything better.

Boo never! Sorry not too helpful so far, never happened to me...

Also, one other thing you could do (no idea if this'll work) is to try to reinstall logged in as a different user.

Not sure if it'll be helpful, but you could try the technical support forums at battle.net: http://www.battle.net/forums/board.aspx?ForumName=opensupport

How long till your dad gets back? I think system restore might be the best bet - hopefully it'll be possible.

If it's not, you might want to try to google the problem or contact blizzard for better techincal assistance. Or maybe Zod will think of something else...

my dad will be home in around... 4 hours lol. guess i'll wait for him, try the system restore, and if that doesn't work, ill be back on tomorrow. Thx for the help tho.
