Help me understand Paladin :(

Okay - so i know - most of you are saying "what is to understand" ??

Here is my dilema:

I understand the whole aura thing, wherein you can only have 1 aura active at a time, unless you wear certain armor that has aura's built in.

What i don't understand....basically to me it does not make sense, is there are so many 'incredible' auras for the paladin, but if you can only use them one at a time, and when you use one of the combat skills your aura goes away, then what is the point in putting points into other skills?

To me, it seems (and im sure that i'm wrong) that you would CONSTANTLY be switching skills and auras - but i see people doing baal runs using a spiraling etheral looking hammer that floats around thier head - claiming that they can do 15k + damage. I WANT TO DO THAT :)

I hear of 'zealot' and 'hammerdin' or the 'smiter' classifications for the paladin....but reading on the skills - i don't understand how the 15k damage plays into effect.

For example: On a smiter: You use your shield (as far as i understand it) to bash enemies....is this powerful? I really don't know.

If somebody could PLEASE post some...'dumb down' information concerning the paladin and how to build. I'm not asking for an advanced, high tech, state of the art description of each possible skill- but something to get me started. The basics....is there ways to stack certain auras....do certain auras still give you boosts even though they are not currently active?
How do you start out a paladin? (im lvl 18 right now, and have not used a single stat point for fear of messing it up...i hate restarting characters)

Thanks to everyone in advace !!! :):afro:

the synergies add into the hammerdins hammer damage... and the concentration aura affects the hammer damage as well

 Synergies.....hammerdin.....

See i come from a while ago - i first started playing in ..... 2002 (?) I think it was. I remember one of the best, 'elite' items was the ol silkweaves, and cow lvl was premiere...
Then due to other games (asherons call.....ultima online....FFXI) i quit diablo for a long while - now i've been back about a month...and it's so hard to catch up. Basically everything i remmeber is gone - and everything else has changed.

I see these paladins using, i believe, blessed hammer, which is the etheral hammer flying around thier head? ....oh man im so confused.

When you use a combat skill, your aura doesn't have to go away.

On the skill icon found to the right side of the screen, have your desired aura(s) placed there, hotkey them over there too.

The left skill icon is used for your combat skills, hotkey them on that icon.

Do you understand synergies, or want an explanation?

You have a base skill damage, depending on the skills level, then that damage gets increased by a percentage baised on how how many hard points* you have placed in it's synergies (displayed at the bottom of the skill description).

Hard points*: means acctuall points placed in skill, items giving bonuses to the skill will not help synergize another skill.

Now in the case of blessed hammer, it also gets damage from the concentration aura, therefor you use concentration aura on your right click, and blessed hammer on your left click. You can hold shift* so that you don't have to target an enemy, but instead cast hammers into the air.

Shift*: or whatever key you use for standing still.

Lots has happened since 2002, best way to get up to date is simply playing and learning slowly, trying things out, and asking here if you really cannot find an answer. You can also read up on the guides stickied across the forum.

Hmm... I think i got it.
I seen the 'synergies' at the bottom of each applicable skill. Didn't know about that shift button....haha....learn something new every day!

Thanks a lot everybody!

I found Hammerdins VERY usefull and very fun to play, they can kill almost everything in the game and are pretty durables.. the synergies will make your hammers very high damages but dont expect to get 15k dmg from ony skills.. half of the dmg comes with the equipment: +skill eq.. you need as many +skill equip and grand charm skillers to archive +15k dmg :)

anyway a hammerdin is very powerful even with cheap stuff! remember that faster cast rate equip is crucial for the hdins! im sure the guide u likned there give you more than enough info for it :)

For starters try to keep the combat skill on the left side (as you look at the screen) and the aura on the right. This way you can combine the skill and the aura for more damage, which is the whole point of using an offensive aura anyway. You can assign and hotkey your skills for easy switching.

also if you build a hammerdin, dont expect to get above 9-10k dmg unless you have some really good stuff. I would say since it seems you are just starting, you should get a vipermagi or tal eth armor, wizardspike or spirit sword, spirit shield, some helm with +skills, amulet with skills+res or even fcr+res, fcr ring, some ring ith res, boots with res, magefist or trang set gloves, belt with res. This should get you around 6k or so dmg at 125 fcr.

herbboy's advice is good. Spirit sword or wizardspike and spirit shield with vipermagi (or even que-hegan's or stealth) make for an excellent budget hammerdin. Try to get a free Peasant Crown helm, it's a wonderful cheaper version of Harlequin Crest. Gamble amulets looking for these mods, ideally 2 or more: +paladin skills or + paladin combat skills, faster cast rate, + to resists, + to mana, + to life, + to dexterity or strength, + to magic find. Get some fastcast rings with similar mods or nagelrings. And get mfing!

also if you build a hammerdin, dont expect to get above 9-10k dmg unless you have some really good stuff.

But you don't need to get that high to be successful in pvm. I think the most important high end item for a hammerdin is 'nigma every thing after that is just gravy.

If you want more fcr not only with hammerdins but any mage/caster character then craft some belts yourself, until you get rich/lucky enough to obtain the unique spidersash belt, Arachnid Mesh

Magic Light Belt/Sharkskin Belt/Vampirefang Belt
Ith Rune
Perfect Amethyst
Any Jewel

Place the above into your Horadric cube and press the transmute button

The fixed properties on the belt would be like these:

5-10% Faster Cast Rate
Regenerate Mana (4-10)%
+ (10-20) To Mana

On top of these fixed properties they may randomly spawn with +str/dex, fast hit recover or resists to fire/lightning ^^ The magical belts must be exactly the stated type else the recipe won't work and they can be found by killing monsters, shopping at vendors or gambling! Cheers and welcome back to LOD (they always come back hehe)

p.s: A sample of what my pagan summon magic finding necro used in the first few days of his life to hit decent fcr for teleing ^^ : http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q205/batuchka/casterbelt1.jpg

I was also confused about all the aura stuff with Pallys, and the only Pally I have at the moment is a Hammerdin, and if you read the guide that Enwere gave you (It's also in the "Guides & ...." sticky at the top of the forum), you'll see that you only put 20 points into one aura. That aura will be the only one you'll use for fighting.

I only use one other aura, which is Redemption, for recovering Life and Mana from the corpses when you're done fighting. Just one point here should do you good. GL, and have fun!
