Has the cheating gone down any?

Has the cheating gone down any?

I haven't played this game in like 2 years. I left because pretty much everyone was using some kind of cheat ( maphack, bots etc ) and the rune duping was out of control.

Basically when I left:

If you joined a game with 7 other people you could be assured at least 3 had a maphack.

About every other game you would run into someone using a program to grab all the drops instantly.

About 90% of the high runes were duped

You had to wait in line for a game because everyone was running their bots 24 / 7

Dueling was a complete joke.

People would use bots to spam one channel after another ( usually for some kind of Trojan embeded program ).

People would use bots to spam one game after another <- I REALLY hated this one.

I saw there was a realm reset and I am wondering if its worth the time to find my cd again.

Well you'll be pleased to know that 30,000 (or something like that) people had accounts banned from using maphack so thats taken away the maphacking, I haven't seen/heard of anyone who is using maphack after this so it seems to have gone for a while at least.
I'm not sure about the duping, I heard somewhere that there was another duping spree recently but I'm not sure if that's true or not.

- Bots and maphack are gone for the time being. There are no working hacks that I know of. All PvP related hacks are gone. Pickit (the item grabber prog) is gone.
- Spam bots however are still around.
- No more waiting in line for games.
- Duping is still a problem though, and getting worse as they aren't just duping runes I hear. Perfect CoAs and stuff like Jeweler's Monarchs of Deflecting too.

However, the game is cleaner than it has been in years despite this.

I am a quite relatively new player.
I started a bit halfway in 1.10 ladder and have made some riches till now.
I would have quit recently (cause of hacks, bots causing realm and lag problems) but the 1.11 was a godsend.
I'm positive you cant stop the 'big organistations' from hacking but at least 90% of the bot/hack kiddies stopped hacking.

This made the game fun and worth playing again. It was even fun seeing immature kid arguing that they need to have MH!

#q@$@!# YOU NAPS.

Indeed, hacks are gone now but will be out really soon IMO. There are stil many people who are using ''Easy Map'' v3 which people think it's undetectable. They'll get banned again but will keep using it on and on again.. For now, this game is awesome but don't think that hacks are gone forever because it'll never be..

There are working public maphacks and bots which are currently undetectable. However, Bliz is now able to make changes to their detection system without you knowing it, allowing them to most likely detect currently undetectable hacks easily in the future (in fact, there are currently some in various hacking forums saying the latest releases got them banned, although it could be other hacks they are using; others haven't been banned for the newest versions yet). Therefore, nobody that has any concern for their characters at all is using them, even the people who designed the programs. Also, the bots are currently harder to configure than previous ones.

As Phyrexial said, very few are using the available maphacks because of the likelihood of Bliz updating their detection code. I've been in very few games recently where someone was risking it.

I have not heard of public duping, though. I'm sure there are private dupes, though; there always are.

So, in conclusion:
1. Public maphacks exist.
2. Public bots exist.
3. Public dupes (I say no, Phyrexial says privates for sure).
4. Bliz can change their detection code at any time without warning, making any hack completely, utterly unsafe.

I believe that Blizz more than likely knows of most of these so-called "undetectable" maphacks... However, they're probably waiting for them to spread before cracking down to catch as many cheaters as possible in one fell swoop. A few people just experimenting with MHs will probably get smacked in the process, but that will just reinforce the fact that you shouldn't even experiment with something that's blatantly against the ToS.

The whole maphack thing reminds me of a program for Final Fantasy XI called Windower, which forces the game to open in a window so people can use their computers for other things while they play. It's a third-party program, and as such is directly against Square-Enix's ToS, but people continue to use it because they think it's "undetectable" and "there's no harm in it." Last update, SE cracked down on a bunch of them because not only is it a 3PP, but it's also used to enable most other botting programs. Same sort of situation, so I just thought I'd bring it up.

That's kinda lame that you can't run it windowed normally. I always run D2 in a window, its a pain having it full screen if someone IMs me or I get a popup or something.

When I think there is too much hackin in D2, i close my eye and remember D1 on bnet and suddenly, the realms appears to be really safe :)

Personnaly, since patch 1.11, i haven't seen some hacking. I must say that i almost play in single game. I prefer that, less problem !

Guiligui

- some baal-runs look "botish", but there are enough people that know the maps out there.
- in quest-games people walk much more often in the wrong directions as in the late 1.10 days, but there are still some people with lots of luck finding directions left.
- i got a Homunculus from Baal with 5 others standing around, so not (almost) everyone is using pick-it anymore, i didn't bother to press "alt" anymore in multi-player baal runs as i haden't had a chance to get anything of worth anyway.

in short: there is a very good chance, that there are still hacks out there, but it's more like suspecting someone to cheat every 5 or 6 games, instead of having an obvious cheater in every other game.

I know its nitpicky but.... 30,000 accounts were banned and 2,000 or so cd keys were banned. Technically, one really prolific duper person COULD have been responsible for all of those accounts....

I'm a very small time player and I have 3 active accounts and 2 cd keys.

Judging by the amount of complaints all over these forums and other forums I'd say they got alot of people.

Oh, yeah, forgot about pickit. No public working ones one, although they have have been pretty much made (just bug checking right now).

AFAIK it was 36000 accts banned, 28000 keys on temp ban & 2000 keys on perm ban. And I know a few people who have lost their accts so yeah they must have caught quite a lot of people.

I'm pretty sure people will continue to find ways how to cheat, but these recent bannings will make them think twice before doing that. After all all blizzard needs to do is update detection software and ban without a warning.

1.11 has been hard - no twinking items to get going - but much more fun. I haven't played with anyone who had a maphack, and I've actually seen items hit the floor when the bosses die.

I hope blizz keeps it clean. Very happy so far to be playing the game instead of simply waiting for tp's in the throne room.

Playing w/o bots or pikits:

I agree that playing legit is more fun and challenging...as it makes u work much harder to lvl and get good item....I have a sorc in hell diff and she is lvl 79 and just got to act 2....and i am still lvling doing pit runs with her cause i like looking for soc items....got me a 4 os monarch and will now have the spirit i have wanted....and boy did i jump for joy when i the the unid set ammy in a nm glaciel trail run and it turned out to be a tal ammy!!! and that's the first set ammy ever i found with this char.......
