Guest Article: Latin Runewords

No the play wasn't funny. It pissed me of 'cause I think there is somekinda realworld-related basis for runes, wich shouldn't be undervalued. For me findin out that Io was a moon for Jup(or was it Saturnus) was quite a shock. I never thought that runes in LoD could have somethin to do with latin/greek or mythology(anykind) so I started researchin and found many rune-kinda words with similarkind meanings, from my point of view, of course. conclusion: in a way, LoD has made me a more civilised person..

LOL, there's irony or sarcasm for you. At any rate, by pure coincidence, I found out that "ohm" is also a term in Indian meaning a meditative state of mind. I doub that's what Blizzard had in mind though.

Well its nice to be a source of humor.. :howdy: anyway, I still think that those god damn runes can be reasonably translated. Cause I wanna believe, believe or not.. I'll go work on it now. (I think I'm losin it..)

Ok the word isn't exatly 'shael' but if 'shaula' means scorpions stinger there has to be a connection to quickness (or shael, cause scorpions propably have -100 attack speed on their tale) ok? farfetched anyway?

Io was part of a Greco-Roman-Egyption mythology as a consort of Zeus and a goddess far before she was a moon. I'll not repeat the myth here in the hopes that you'll collectively do your own research.

Occasionally, I realize how sad it is that no one does mythology anymore. We are a society of uneducated ingrates. :(

a holy predicted rest//
i bring forth death like an enemy
well this is my best translation. the ******** about latin is like, when you look up 'Ut' in a dictionary, it gives you 10000 different meanings like : when, like, as, while, so that.. And also, 'obitus'(death) is in the plural...WTF!!!! i must say...ferrous i take my hat off for your translating the aeneid...cos, random word order, stupid ancient references, absurd abstract word usage...make it quite difficult.

And Anyee, Io never became a moon, the scientists just gave the name to that moon. When you put a SANCTion on a country, you make it removed, and the ancients 'SANCTified' their deities(make holy), and our planets are also sancted(removed) from us.

sorry for my latin lesson. moderators feel free to ban me :D

random

I'd like to throw in a random offering on the rune matter....
In physics, an Ohm is the unit of measure for resistance in a circuit and it is represented by the Greek character Ohm which is a horseshoe type of dealie. So yea it seems like those crazy D2 creators mixed it up with both Latin and Greek.

editttt.. haha crap, shouldnt have stopped reading the post, im a little late on the Ohm stuff
but yea i saw the post on Shael... and with the "el" meaning of God in Hebrew.. Sha is the leader of Iran or whatnot.. I'm not sure

That article is the most bullsh*t I've ever seen. As a Latin student, I know that the "sentences" he made are so full of crap. There is no need to over analyze. The runewords try to employ a combination of both high runes and low runes and strive for diversity. Also, the runewords are suited to a specific task such as a merc armor, and therefore, suggest that one rune by used over another. For instance, in STONE, mercs need resists so Um rune is the central rune of the runeword.

yea why is the um rune "um"? +to resists doesnt mean a sign of your lack of intellgience

sorry, couldnt resist... just bumping it cuz the posts are interesting, i can research cuz i have t-3 dialup :(

I already pointed out Pelta Lunata and Homunculus in a previous post...including a lot of other items...I'm so glad to know you read through before you posted.
Well then everyone...in the name of all that is holy, stop all discussion and speculation, Ferrous already told us all he knows, which is obviously all there is to know, period. Let me PM Elly to close the thread, since we wouldn't want to have any individual opinions or interpretation on the forum topics now will we?

I know she never became a moon. What I meant in the sentence, which everyone else but you seemed to get, was that Io was a feature of Greco-Roman (and Egyption) mythology for which that moon is named. Ever notice that the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are named after Greco-Roman dieties/figures? Ganymede (cup-bearer), Europa (mortal concsort), Metis, etc.? Io is no exception.

Sanctus -a -um means consecrated or holy, not removed. Do a quick etymology search and you will find that. The word sanction means decree, not removal. The present day meaning is a derivative of the word's original meaning. Your convoluted logic baffles the mind and you should sanction (ha ha) yourself from any other attempts at seeming intellectual in this thread. Sit down before you hurt yourself.
