Because he is a lot more trusted and because he has been here long enough to know better than to download unsafe ****.

You get attached to people after a while. When someone makes their first post "OMG I got hacked", you don't really feel bad for them because you don't know them. It's the difference between a total stranger having a car accident and a friend having one. But rykuss has been here a long time and long-time members form bonds with each other. Is that really so hard to imagine? I've never met any of them, and I don't know what they look like, but I feel I know them. There is a certain kinship among us (well, I'm probably overreaching by including myself, since I'm not as well known as he was). This is why I had a bad feeling in my stomach when Cooked got hacked and it was an even more severe shock when I read rykuss' post. I think the only consolation that can be found in such a situation is a warm response from other forum members.

I'm not disagreeing with you, I feel bad for him too. It's just that for the longest time no one would consider anything other than "user error". I was starting to wonder if people would even believe Evrae if it happened to him. Like I said, I am sorry to hear of anyone's losses, and I do understand the "bond" that comes with long-term membership (this isn't the only forum I visit). I am also sorry to hear that a long-time member is leaving our community, but I can't say I blame him.

Just out of curiousity, why is rykuss different than everyone else? Out of the 50 "OMG I'm haxxored" threads this week, almost everyone else got ridiculed, called a cheater, and accused of downloading 3rd party software. Is this what it takes to validate the other people's stories? Sorry for jumping on the 'ol soapbox, and very sorry to hear about yet another players losses, but the hypocrisy is killing me...

Dude's got like 3,000 posts. He's been around here a while, and so he's not considered a stranger or a "newb" like me.

B...
You're not leaving. You can't leave. I won't let you.
I'd love for you to stick to this game, and continue posting here... I'll miss you too much. In all honesty, I already kind of miss dave, even though I know he'll be back... (did I just say that!?) I miss G and Z's posts too...

If you leave, it'll be like Xenon leaving these boards all over again...
I know how much you play the game, and I know how much you enjoy it. I've played with you a number of times. Now this may not be much, and I haven't played in a long while, and I know I'm not as wealthy as I once was. But I'll strip my account(s) for you as long as it means you'll stay with this community, and keep on playing the game!

I don't know what to say rykuss. It's not fair and I feel terrible for you. I never enjoy having to read people's hack stories and I enjoy it even less when the story is coming from somebody whose presence is a familiar and welcomed one.

I do hope you'll think twice about leaving the community and I also hope that, once the shock wears off a bit, you'll reconsider giving up the game. Don't let the bad guys win - scan your computer thoroughly and keep on truckin'.

Is there any chance to find out how this crime was done?Is this happening on Us-West only or elsewhere? If this works it will spread out to other realms aswell. If i'd lost all my stuff i would quit too.:sad2:

Previous posts about why this forum is rough on a low poster and so nice to a 3000 poster really need to be considered.

Skepticism of a low posters claim is reasonable - the rudeness and outright accusations are ridiculous. Ask our questions and investigate, then we at least have an idea of what is going on. Too many of these threads from people new or not as involved in this community are just cruel and holier than thou...

Wouldn't a low poster also get a warning about vulgarities?

from what i've read, only ppl on west are affected by this and it's not specific to this forum

looks like the hackers use password recovery feature to somehow get a hold of account passwords, so it'd be a good idea to make email passwords stronger, or register a totally new and unknown mail acct just for d2

apart from that no idea what's really going on

I doubt seriously it had anything to do with password recovery... at least not the people that are blowing through UsWest Realm.. I mean sure a few here and there may be using it to their advantage.. but I had been hacked about 2 weeks back.. and I never use password recovery, nor for that matter even register my account... There are already too many ways someone can access your account... Registering it on b.net is like holding the back door open FOR them..

what i find most alarming is the fact that ppl get hacked, their topics get locked, and they vanish from d2 community altogether

nobody takes time to analyze what went wrong, how their accs got hacked (or at least how they THINK they got hacked)

i feel really uneasy about this stuff as it can also happen on any other realm and we have no idea what's going on, what loopholes are hackers using etc so we have no way of protecting our accounts better

There's a reason why most topics that are of the "I got hacked" nature get locked.

That reason is: "I got hacked, give items".

Short and simple, if someone new comes in and posts a thread saying I got hacked and then asks for items (I'm talking high end stuff here) than that will get closed.

And on top of that, it's up to Dredd and myself to determine if any thread gets locked or deleted.

Ultimately, they will just create new ways of cracking your account.. Even if you do figure out how they did it the previous time.. and take measures to safeguard from it... they'll just find a way around it, or figure out another way of doing it..

That and alot of people wouldn't take the time out to secure themselves even if someone found out the many ways they are doing this.

It's not just a matter of post count, that's just a number. You have to earn a reputation and the trust and respect of others, by being here for some time, by making others know you, by making high quality postings or a generally pleasant impression and by doing it continuously.

If somebody wants my trust, it's him who has to proove it somehow, not me. I'm not making jokes at the expense of them, that would be hypocritic, but I will remain cautious, as it smells fishy when e.g. a newcomer complains about getting hacked with his very first posting here - or with his 50th.

i dunno, i think i have to agree with temple a little. granted if somebody not really well known posts 'i was hacked' and all that, it's probably just that they did something stupid lol. but if a flood of people are hacked (excluding the 'i need free it3mz' hacked ppl) and there's a pattern, like uswest players in this case, it's unlikely that all of them did something stupid.

The problem with bnet and other popular online gaming network, is that they are facing armies of hackers, cheaters and the likes. I am not taking Blizzard's defense here but I can safely assume that they're greatly out numbered in the Hackers/Security people war. Futhermore, DII is victime of it's own popularity. This game is pretty much an exception in the gaming world by being so old and still very popular at the same time. It makes it a perfect candidate for hackers, a profite still can be made and Blizzard's attention is not on this game anymore since the $$$ is eslewhere.

That said, getting hacked sucks big time. Loosing items that have been hard earned is frustrating in the extreme. You certainly have my sympathy. Had it happened to me, I don't know what I'd have done but probably the same as you. Quitting the game when you're ready and being forced to quite in the manner is a complete different ball game and it understandably leaves you with a very sour taste in you mouth.

That's a very valid point, quote for truth.

Although I've never been hacked, I hardly ever play bnet (as much as I miss it) anymore because of occurances such as this. Rykuss, it is a shame that this has happened to you. As it appears by the words of the forum members above, you are are a reputable person and one least deserving of such an act. I hope you decide to rejoin the D2 community again, perhaps in SP.

Hear, hear! Never forget the single player option!
When the hackers take over, the internet is gone, the bomb has been dropped, there'll still be single player...
(provided u got a solar panel, windmill or exercise bike + dynamo, etc for power of course... )

Sorry for your loss but once you get thru the grieving process, maybe u'll remember the fun of starting over again with nothing?
