I haven't dne too much trading, but it took me about a month (while I was testing my build) to MF pretty much all of my gear. I traded for a few items (Tal Armor, Ammy), but essentially I mfed it.
The main reason I see some as saying that they have a hard tiime building their chars from scratch, and that they can;t find anything decent is that they;
a) Lack the necessary knowledge of the game and how to make it work for them.
b) Don't take the time to really study the game beforehand (read the manual, strategy guide, visit WEB sites) They just strap on a character and yell yee haw.
c) Don't have the patience to work the game (get rushed instead of questing) and thus lose out on the natural drops that occur when fully questing the game, and don;t develop the necessary battle skills for their style of play. The latter leads to frustration, ineffective or slow MF runs, and thus frustration with "Not finding anything good".
d) They hear about the experienced and skilled players finding great stuff frequently, and build up their expectations. When these are not immedeately reliazed (usually due to al of teh above) they develop a defeatist attitude and thus the reduce teh amount of time the spend on FM runs/trading, etc..
e) All of the above.
Just my two cents
