Forum Mafia - The Dark Tower Game Thread

At one point I was going to have the game take place with Roland's original ka-tet ... the problem I ran into was that I had no villains to be the mafia team, lol.

Wow, sounds like you wrote a whole book for this. Looking forward to seeing all the effort you put in.

Crazy idea that would not work, but sounds amusing in my head: Make a game where everyone is town, and the town wins when it decides to not lynch anyone. Town loses if only 2 people remain alive.

So the mod randomly rolls nightkills? That would be super evil man.

Good questioning. You've figured it out by now, I guess, but the reason I wanted to keep dj in hiding was that suzannah would protect any of our team from being killed. We had no reason to suspect you would target him.

I actually figured he was a bit hidden, but I guess both mine and jcakes's light interrogations were easy to see through on dj

It does indeed sound like fun, but at that point, you leave it up to chance to whomever can't play anymore every time there's a "NK" going on.

Okay, finished the first mafia chat, and now that I see I timed the palaver PERFECTLY and we still lost, it only reinforces the idea that it was basically a puzzle for the mafia to figure out and the town to sit by and watch. In post 407 (I think) Drixx first tells the mafia there are multiple wincons. Yikes, no one else knew and so we had no idea who to protect (and our doc was afk for a week or two it seems, anyway).

so yeah, the mafia were playing a game (and it looks like it was a lot of fun, even though they were stomped on) but the town was not.

pre-edit:
HA, Gory said it right in post 30 of chat 2

"I couldn't possibly speculate on what killing off the tet corporation members might do as far as the game goes."

I did go into the game intending to be more hands on that traditional. I didn't go into it intending to go nearly as far in terms of giving up info as I did, and that's why I said my biggest takeaway was to sit on my hands and say nothing (provided that the game is more clear up front of course).

I see what you're saying about the setup being a puzzle for the mafia, and that seems like an accurate assessment, although it wasn't the intention. I tried to model the ka-tet off of the lore of the book series, and in general they were reactionary and fought as a last resort, so it seemed to fit the lore to give the ka-tet a set of defensive reactionary abilities.

Hopefully it will make more sense from a gamebuilding perspective when I get the site up that Thyiad has so graciously offered. I think what I am sorry most about, as far as it goes for you Pharphis, is that you got a really cool role to be excited about but my mistakes took away that excitement. Just a bad showing all around really.

My hope at this point is that the lessons learned will pay dividends in the future and that the game can be picked over for useful bits to be recycled and used in different ways going forward.

I think this is the most important thought. Each game is a new learning experience.

BTW thank you all for tolerating my posting when I came back from the dead. I could not have had a better time when I was doing that lol.

Eh, Roland had no activated abilities (I was aware of! *tease*) so probably less exciting than some of the roles. I like inventor, tbh. would have been cool to give that a try. I'm surprised NO ONE in the mafia chat noted by bread crumb of being Roland, mason recruiter in my very first post. I seem to recall Jcakes laughing at me for being so obvious.

CG is right.

My next game is ten mafia groups all comprised of bus drivers.

I LEARN NOTHING.
I wish I was in that bus driver game and I also definitely hope you host this one but tell them they're cops that have a chance of receiving a result from 2 people (which ofc you end up switching and providing no investigation result)

It was fun until they realized they were all bus drivers. Then...not so much! LOL.

This can only end well. Make them all naive cops on the first target.

There's actually a mafia variant that I contemplated running. It features five players:
One mafia, vanilla.
One naive cop (always innocent results)
One paranoid cop (always guilty results)
One insane cop (reversed results)
One sane cop (correct results)

In my defense: I didn't consciously read what players posted during twilight. Except when someone asked me something between two players. I think that was my own teammate. /rude. I'd pick things up as I read all the posts for each player (read all pharphis' posts at once, then all soandso's posts...) but that was well after twilight. Also, you and phil made so many posts I didn't have time to read either of your posts (or give reads) for N2. Made me late is what you did - my reads being posted after we decided on a kill already.

My first game as mafia... memories.

All of the cops are told they are sane cops, right?

I barely read twilight posts as well. I was so focused on acting like the lore king who was there to serve the town that I meant to solve the riddle at all costs. A little too laser focused.
