Experience / Difficulty

Hey, I've looked around but I haven't found what I'm looking for. Sorry to start a new thread, I tried to find it.

I was wondering what the best /p setting is for experience? What are the exp rates for /p1 - /p8? Also, while I'm at it, what's a good level to go from Normal to Nightmare? I don't want Nightmare to be too easy (that'd be boring) but I also don't want to get pwned.

- Greg

Edit: Found it!

# 1.00-1.08: Experience = X * (2n + 1) / 3
# 1.09: see list below
# 1.10+: Experience = X * (n + 1) / 2

Each extra player adds 50% to the base experience value. So you get 200% of the base at /p3 and 450% of the base at /p8.

A single-pass full clear of Normal at /p1 takes you to level 37, I think. The same on /p8 takes you to level 48-49. I have done both and Nightmare is perfectly playable in either case.

Re: Experience / Difficulty

The ideal level for NM can vary a great deal depending on several factors. The build you're playing is the most important; cookie-cutters twinked to the gills can easily survive /p8 NM at level 40 and get great xp from it. Untwinked cookie-cutters can also handle /p8 at level 40, just a bit slower. Less optimal builds, if twinked, can do the same. Melee builds depending on AR might want to wait till 45+ so they stand a better chance of hitting with their attacks. Tournament characters playing single-pass, full clear will generally reach 49, at which point NM is survivable for even the most crippled builds, given sufficient time.

So, yea, basically, the answer is it depends. Sorry about that.

Re: Experience / Difficulty

Higher the /p setting = higher the EXP. Can't remember the exact EXp rates, but it was somewhere around 350-400% more EXP gained at p8, if I remember right.

Good level to enter Nightmare is somewhere around 45-50, in my opinion. But if you really want more challenge, 40-44 should work decently too.

Re: Experience / Difficulty

While higher player settings give you more experience, it's probably not ideal to go /players 8 the whole way. If I'm not doing single pass, I usually drop it down to /players 5 after the den of evil because /players 8 can be ridiculously slow. You won't get as much experience per area, but you'll probably get more experience per hour.

I agree with this. For me, trying to get through Normal as quickly as reasonably possible, 1-hit kills is more useful than the extra experience you gain from a higher setting.

I have some really nice twinking items for the early-game, so I can make it until about the Arcane Sanctuary with 1-hit KO's on /players8 with pretty much any character, which puts me around level 22-24. At that point I usually drop to /players3 until the start of Act4, then /players1 until Eldritch or Pindle or Baal (where I may do a few /players8 runs).

I might loose a little of that time doing an extra /p8 Baal run or two to make up some of that experience before entering NM, but by the time I get there I'm ~level35 and my skills/items are starting to pick up speed & power, so I can jump back to a higher setting and keep my speed up quite well, and Baal runs give really good experience up until about level47 (you can go a lot higher on Normal Baal though, if you want to - I often push to level50 for The Cat's Eye).

For Nightmare it depends a lot on the character's power & safety, but generally I try to keep the killing speed up and make up any lagging experience in Act5. At worst I'll do most of NM on /players3, but with more powerful charcters I'll go with p5 or p7 until about Act3 (when the experience gained on higher settings and the kill speed both start to slow down a little more). Usually there's an item I want around level75 (Reaper's Toll, Dracul's Grasp, Kira's Guardian, Griffon's Eye, etc.) so I'm seldom lower than that before entering hell. I don't go past level77 in NM though, and I don't remember ever entering hell with a character still in its 60's, except maybe a sorc or two meant to teleport past as much of the game as possible and go straight to an MF target.

When I enter Hell (and the /players setting) really depends on the character I'm playing. If I want to push for a higher level for a certain item early on (Arachnid's Mesh, Stormlash) I'll do some Countess or Pits runs.

Re: Experience / Difficulty

I generally play at a comfortable setting. For some characters that is P8 through most of normal and NM. For others its only P3 etc depending on how much twinking I do and how powerfull that character is. I almost always start on P8 and drop down to P1 for Blood raven, Andy, maggot lair, and Duriel.

Not Ancients?

They drop nothing and experience is constant, so why not.

Topi

EDIT: It's not constant IIRC. It can be lower if it would mean two (or more) levels of experience. It's capped to give only one level. Which reminds, does anyone know what are the lowest levels that guarantee full experience from all three cases of the Ancients?

Re: Experience / Difficulty

I usually go p8 until Act 4, drop to p1 there, then back to p8 in Act 5, if going through normal twinked. Usually this ends up in me being around level 42 by the time I've smoked the ancients. Works fine for me and let's me pass to NM without running Baal at all, if I so wish.
