do you keep track of your deaths?

do you keep track of your deaths?

saw someone else with body count in their profile and I thought, hmm that's a good idea, gives some insight into that person, I'll add it too.

but i listed mine as ratio so I had to count up my deaths and add up my current serious characters and i came up with 4/15. Doesn't count dueling characters of course because i expect them to die.

But then today I was thinking about aliens in star trek and I got to thinking about aliens in stargate which naturally led me to think of Shak'l. I still don't know how to spell his name but it doesn't matter much since he died in season one. And my character named for him also died and I comletely forgot about that guy when I was adding up my chracters!

So the corect number--counting my new chars from this week--is 5/17

I thought i had better put them in a text file so I don't forget about them.

shakl (20ish paladin): extra strong flame spider, normal spider cavern
darth_fuzzball (60ish? FC bear): nm bartuc FE bug
Storm_Prophet (89 windy): hell a5 spearcats/ no oak
Dave_CTA (47 hammerdin): overwhelemed after lag spike/not S/E fast enough
hopeidontdie (24? frenzybarb): norm diablo lightning hose--tried to solo him too early

Anyone else keep track of your "death ratio" or is that too morbid?

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

not really, once i die, and get over the cursing, i just move on to the next.i suppose i have died 6 times this ladder before i got it right:grin:.currently level 91 with a summoner.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

I dont keep track per say.

What it really boils down to on my end after discounting rare freak stuff (I lost a high leaper this season in a uber run because someone messed the "target" up) , My pvm twinked chars "never" die. In the last few seasons I've lost only a 2-3 chars I'd say if that.
I've played long enough to know what my toons can and cannot do, and what monsters mods to watch out for.

The untwinked toons are a harder play, while death is rare it happens (esu barb)

Ive a ridiculous amount of high level chars , mostly twinked, some untwinked and some are even crazy underdog builds ie Melee Oath Necro, Titan Melee Sorc, Impale-Fend zon and a Pure Sacrifice Pally to name a couple of my more interesting builds.

When I die, I delete the char right away. It would only irk me to see the dead char on the screen. (out of sight out of mind.)

food for thought

Who remembers their first HC death? My first was in late 1.09. I took an untwinked lvl45 bowzon to NM Meph, he cleaned her clock. It is kind of amazing how quickly one can get through this game with no fear of death.

My next toon made it A1 hell a lot more slowly, MSLE got her.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

It is pretty simple to keep track of my HC deaths. Open the deeds thread and there you go. IIRC my first HC death was in Hell Travi, I had some beers before and likely was a little slow, but that had never been a problem with my summon nec. I still remember my last thoughts:

Green feet ... hmmm ... so one of the critters has conviction ... that mean your res now is at ...

I couldn´t finish that thought, because I was interrupted by the deeds screen. Recalculating afterwards I would assume -30% to be the right value. I still don´t know what killed me, but at least I didn´t loose any gear of value.

My first Death when I switched from sc mode was via tppk. I got up to level 60 and nm baal in a public game got me.(I only played in public or solo games then) It was from a windy. When I 1st switched over I didnt know about tppk, wish I'd read that sticky posted on our page.

I actually lost 3 chars right at that the start to tppk , next two were 31 sorcies lost in norm baals. It was then I realized how prevalent it was in games. Almost quit , but then met some friendly folk and have been here on hc ever since.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

Just started this season like three weeks ago, no deaths so far.

My first char that died must either have been a lvl 20ish barb @ summoner or an amazon around 40ish @ NM mephisto, but that must have been back in the 1.01 days or whatever.. Long long time ago, but I remember both because when the barb died my friend said he would avenge me and 10s later underwent the same faith. And the amazon because she was boosting some1, to whom I was bragging about how cool my ama was :)

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

Nope, made too many chars, died on too many chars.

When I die I just "LOL" and delete the char

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

Yeah, I keep track, but considering I've only played 3 chars in HC in my whole D2 career/experience/life, it's not all that difficult.

I played a druid shockwave summoner a few years ago which died in hell Chaos at around level 75. Then came back a few months ago, lost a fishymancer to norm Diablo at level 25 and finally succeeded to make a guardian strafer that's still around.

And I'm anal enough (not OCD, but you know, 1/5 of the way there) that I'm sure I would keep track (or try to) even if I have a thousand chars.

Now if only I was home (and not wasting away in the office) so I could start off that 4th char I've been planning....

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

Too many to track but I doubt I have any worse than say an 80% success rate and probably higher. IIRC in S1 and S2 combined I only killed (2) Kickers and (1) Necro btu I made 3-4 accts full of characters both seasons including Classic and LOD. There may of been the odd low lvl I lost and simply just forgot about. BTW, lost both Sins to FEs in Act 5 and the Necro was the one and only first poison build I tried and he died in Act 4 Norm.

As for my first HC death it was to Gold Hack, which was in 1.09 where a player has a script that quickly tosses hundreds of piles of gold on the ground. They do it near a way point, when a player enters the piles of gold causes lots of lag/load time, enough for them to then go to town, hostile, return and kill you. This was befroe they added the hostile timer on waypoints which can also be worked around. My next (3) deaths all cam in the same day and that was when I realized I needed to build differently than i did in SC. My first one was a 59 Bowa which was actually built well, but my next was a lvl 18 Pally that had on Sigs set (read as too much strength to early), next one was an Orb sorc with low life like lvl 40 (read, invested in energy), and the 3rd was what I thought was nearly an unkillable in Norm dual weilding Bloodletter Barb where i found out the real impact of dolls in Norm!

Basically I hit the skool of hard knocks so freaking hard in one single day that I got on the INet and searched DIABLO, found this site, started reading and building better. I actually went back to SC for 1 hour after I killed off all my HC builds in basically a 3 hour stretch, I nearly gave up, but I was soo freaking bored in SC with my lvl 95+ guys I came back to HC and stuck it out and never looked back once I started reading things around here.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

I tend to view HC deaths as some sort of failure. As such, I don't want to be reminded of this and tend to try and learn from the mistake and carry on.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

saw someone else with body count in their profile(...)
That was prolly me, i always add it to my main acc's profile when im returning to d2 after a long break. After gettin tired again i quit and can see sort of "how much my gameplay improved".

Re: food for thought

Who remembers their first HC death?

I do. Level 24 Windy to Normal Diablo. I had been chipping away at him, and he literally had only | much left, when boom lag spike. My thought is "ok, Ill run away, and when it catches back up, ill just superfast run away from him". The problem was, he insta hosed me, which while isn't that big of a deal since I had decent life and CA, but he put me in hit recovery, which then meant I didn't run like I though I had, deeds.

I had tried HC for fun along with the people I was playing SC with. Each one of them was weak and went whimpering back to SC, I stayed.

As for deaths, I can't quite recall what I lost back on West (I do try and SS them though, but I lost them in a forced HC reformat), but as for East this season, its the following:

45ish Hdin to NM Ancients - I was blazing through everything with ease, so I thought "wth, I can do this". Wrong, one WW and Deeds.

45ish Windy - The infamous "Hephisto's mods say Fire Enchanted, I know Fire Enchant has to mean Holy Fire". Yeah.....

75ish ES/Orber - Decided to try NM Chaos, since the other char i was playing got tagged. She was half geared, and ran into a LEFE MB, I think ES too, Grand Vizier. MB killed my ES off and the FELE got me as I realized what he was RIGHT as the Orb popped him.

I know there is a 4th, or at least am pretty sure, but I just can't remember. I think the BSOD got a char once, however I don't remember if that was West or not. Also, I don't count Mythios dieing while Uber leveling the other day, since, well, he wasn't a char yet.

Of course, I also have killed off ALOT of chars to remake/move. I have someone PK them (MYK did 3 last night) so I can keep the ears as a remembrance. Save for Cogliostro, who was so godly, he had to kill himself.

Re: do you keep track of your deaths?

I remember my first HC death.

I made a level 1 barb, and had a zombie kill him. I figured if I'd died once, then I'd be able to get over it when a serious character died.

I lost a 24 sorc this season. It was my second character for the season, so I needed to invest in strength (couldn't just wait for the torch+anni+enigma or whatever to fix all my problems). I had max FR, but I forgot Ventar deals physical damage, too, lol. Anyway, hit a lag spike which prevented Glacial Spike spam from saving me (or juvie or reacting in time to alt+f4).

I tend to run in recklessly, but build nearly unkillable characters that kill slowly. I always wear SS, Tgods, Dwarf Star, max block.
