D2R crashes a lot recently

So.. ever since we had the MF Tournament I am experiencing way too many crashes.
It happened with different characters and on different areas (more often on Baal Waves).
The game was working flawlessly few months ago and ever since I bought it but now I might experience it even 2-3 times per day.
Unless an update in Windows or in Graphics card has triggered something, I haven't changed anything regarding the game or my Pc configuration.
I was mainly wondering if anyone has the same issue?

I'm sitting at a wood desk and knocking on it very rapidly as I type this one handed. I play on a laptop that has a GPU that is part of the Motherboard and a "discreet" GPU card. For the game to function correctly it must be set to run on the just the discreet GPU. I bring this up because about 2 months ago it started doing weird things as I tried to play. After checking things, I realized that I somehow reset it to run on both or it got changed as part of an update. I switched it back and have had no problems since.

I haven't had crashes but I am experiencing bad visual and frame stutter. It only goes away after a hard restart of the pc.
Was that always the case or it recently started?

I must really check if something changed in my setting but how should I know in the first place what has changed?

30 years ago, I could have told you exactly how to check your settings, but no longer. The easiest place to start(and thus probably where you won't find anything) is the settings in the Game options. That's the button above Save and Exit  Depending on the age and brand of your computer you may have an app that lets you control your settings without having to dig into Windows itself.

Other things to think about. Are you having any issues with other programs. Have you added a program or app just before you started experiencing the Diablo problems. Downloading something new could have changed something in your settings.

Hopefully, there is someone that reads these threads that can actually help you. If not, buy a new computer!!

No issues here, but this is what I would do in a similar situation:

  • Open the BNet app and check for updates. Also, from there use the "scan and repair" option for D2R.
  • Use a junk cleaner/optimizer program like CCleaner to check for errors and clean up windows cache files, registry etc.
  • Restart computer (some people are just stubborn about doing this for w/e reason)
  • If still crashing, consider a clean reinstall of D2R.
  • Check for driver updates (CPU/GPU in particular)
  • Also start monitoring your PC temps while Baal running and also when not playing. Might be a dying/dead fan or grody radiator that needs cleaning.
  • Also maybe consider lowering some game settings/monitor refresh rate or anything that might stabilize temps.

It has been sporadic but lately it's gotten worse. I've taken this as a sign I need moar time in Grim Dawn. Still waiting patiently for fangs of asterkarn to come out.

Did you update windows 11 to 24h2/25h2? Those two patches are the problem, you need to go back to 23h2

Thanks, and sorry for the late reply, everyone. My PC is actually brand new, only about a year old and everything has been working flawlessly so far. I only started experiencing issues with D2R recently, so as I said, I mainly think an automatic Windows update or a GPU driver update might have caused some problems.

@Dredd Thanks for the tips. Those are obviously some basic things to check, but I didn’t know about the scan and repair option. I ran it and no issues were found.

@Pavke
I checked my update history and as it seems my windows have the 24h2 update.
I googled it and there’s a confirmed bug in 24H2 related to the “Auto HDR” feature: when Auto HDR is enabled, games may crash, freeze, or display incorrect colors. I checked the D2R settings and I don't see such an option in-game though. I don't really want to revert windows updates. :(

@Pavke is likely correct based on what I've read. If you don't wish to revert, you might have to just endure the crashes until Microsoft finally decides to address it.

HDR is a Windows setting which you'll find under Settings/System/Display. Then look for a link that says something like "Windows HD Color Settings". If you have an HDR capable monitor you'll be able to fiddle with those settings, otherwise they're automatically set to "off". The odds that these settings will address your issue is pretty low but worth a shot.

I didn't even take into account that you were using Win11 because I'm a moron! I decided to stick with extended security updates for Win10 and convert to Linux next fall because I'm just plain sick of everything Microsoft. I assumed everybody was doing this. :ROFLMAO:

Everything I found close to this setting was either off or listed as "not supported".
I guess I have to wait until it is fixed. 😞

Crashing issue is supposedly fixed in latest patch from few hours ago

Hello everyone—

Today we deployed an update intended to address several stability issues we’ve been tracking, while also expanding our crash reporting to give the team better visibility into the underlying causes of these problems.

This patch includes fixes/logging for some of the crashes we’ve been seeing, most notably:

  • Crashes occurring when exiting the game
  • GPU-related issues, which can happen when running multiple clients, and, in some cases, during actions such as teleporting or traveling through waypoints
In addition to these, the update improves the data we capture when a crash does occur. This additional information will help us more accurately identify why this behavior is happening and guide further improvements.

We’ll continue to monitor the results from this patch and build on what we learn here in future updates. As always, we appreciate your patience and the reports you’ve been submitting—they are a critical part of helping us track these issues down.

Thank you much,
Cederquist
