Cubing Magic Sorc Orbs

Just been doing some thinking about how to gear up my sorc on the new ladder when I thought of the various cube recipes and these two came up:

3 Chipped Gems + 1 Magic Weapon = Socketed Magic Weapon
This adds sockets to a magic weapon. The original magic weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. If you use this formula with a weapon that is not normally socketed such as a Javelin, this recipe will create a new magical weapon without any sockets. ilvl=25 magic weapon with 1-2 sockets.

3 Standard Gems (normal) and 1 Socketed Weapon (Any Type) = 1 Socketed Magic Weapon (of same type)
This takes a socketed weapon and makes it a magic socketed weapon with a random number of sockets. This allows you to get new magic bonuses on an otherwise non magical weapon. The original weapon properties will be removed (rerolled) when the new weapon is created. ilvl = 30. It gets 1-2 sockets.

These two recipes would work on Sorceress orbs right? I don't see why they wouldn't, because they are weapons after all. Assuming that orbs can be rerolled in such a fasion, would any staffmods also be rerolled?

Yes, the staffmods should be rerolled because the orb gets a new ilvl, just like its automods (like +mana for orbs... or was it +energy ?).

At least in the beginning of the season there's something useful to do with chipped gems. :azn:

I tried it yesterday evening, so I'm 100% sure it works with staffmods and automods. I produced an orb with +2 to two useless high-level spells (well, useless for my sorc), so I sold it. Malah tried to sell it back to me for 460k

Yea, I did some cubing myself yesterday. Burned through ~21 chips and ~12 normals before I found a 4os broadsword and the spirit runes

Both the chippy recipe and the reg gem recipe put you in the range of tier 4 for staffmods, which means you will only be able to get tier 2 - tier 5 staffmods on your rerolls, IE no level 30 skill nor level 1 skills. But if you're looking for say firewall, enchant, blizzard, fireball, etc. then you can get them with this reroll and heck if the alvl is high enough you could be able to get +3 enchant and +3 fire skills on an orb, or some other nice combo like that.

The chippy recipe is one of my favorite reroll recipes and I only use it on items that can get staffmods. Any recipe that changes or sets ilvl will change staffmods on the item. That includes low quality to normal quality as well, you can make a really nice +3 fire wall, +3 fire mastery leaf rune word if your lucky with your rlow- normal and socketing rolls.

Hmmm, would it be possible then to say cube a cracked Shrunken Head to normal quality and have the possibility of getting stuff like Skeleton Mastery and Summon Skeleton as mods on it? Might lessen my frustration at trying to find my Fishymancer a nice shield.

No, the ilvl gets set to 25 when using the chipped recipe, but the recipe to fix it will reroll the staffmods/automods as well..

What I meant would using the following cube recipe:

1 El Rune + 1 Chipped Gem + Low Quality Armor = Normal Quality Armor of same type

reroll the staff mods on a Shrunken Head to something that has the possibility of receiving low level mods like Raise Skeleton and Skeleton Mastery? Oh well, might as well try it out myself, not like Els and chippies are that hard to come by :wink3:

That's what I meant with the second part of my previous posting. Staffmods and automods will be rerolled.

The ilvl gets set to 1 when the low quality to normal quality is cubed. but the tier is much lower at ilvl = 1 you'll only see tier 1 and 2 staffmods.

... which is exactly Urthop's intent - getting low tier staffmods, like RS and SM.
