Day 5 Ends!
An elderly woman grabs the pullcord. *Ding* A nearly finished cat sweater hangs between crochet hooks. After a slip stitch, the woman begins stowing her handiwork and waits for her stop.
The bus doesn’t slow. Puzzled, the woman grabs the pullcord again. *Ding* The next stop rolls by. Her knees are already protesting at the mere thought of having to walk the extra distance. She yanks now. Again and again.
*Ding*
*Ding* *Ding*
A college student joins in - pre-med by the looks of the textbook being highlighted.
*Ding*
The busdriver looks oblivious as another stop flies by. Worry creases the faces of passengers who don’t need to depart just yet.
A young mother, nursing her newborn, tries to stop her four year old son from taking part in the new game. Unsuccessfully. *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* No one else is grinning.
“Hey!†a surly construction worker shouts as he makes his way toward the front. “Are you an idiot or something? You’re missing stops. We aren’t paying good money for the privilege of wearing out our boots. You need to wake up and turn this bus around.â€
Finally looking up, the busdriver replies: “No can do. Too many passengers on these new busses. My shift is over and we don’t get paid no overtime cause of the budget cuts. I’mma headed to the barn. You all can take the next bus out.â€
The passengers were speechless. All except for the four year old, still grinning and laughing. *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding* *Ding*
“What the ****!†someone - impossible to tell whom due to the racket - yelled. Looks of worry were replaced by sinister determination. This bus is going to stop...
Maybe it was the incessant dinging. Maybe it was the slow leak of engine exhaust into the cabin. Maybe it was the heat. Everything and yet nothing.
The bus did indeed stop. And so did the busdriver. Eventually. The dinging of the pullcord chime didn’t stop until the busdriver stopped twitching: the pullcord still looped around his neck.
flubbucket was lynched. He was the Extra Seat Bus Driver. Pro-Town.
