Create Your Own Role Mafia

This is a game of Mafia. For those unfamiliar with Mafia, here is a basic description. Source .

In its simplest form, Mafia consists of two sides: the Mafia, and the Town. The Mafia's goal is to kill the innocents, while the Town's goal is to kill the Mafia.

At the beginning of the game, the Moderator will secretly send everyone their role. The Mafia will know each other, while (in the basic game) everyone else will only know their own role.

The game has two phases, the first of which is Day. During Day, the Town must choose someone to Lynch; they are trying to eliminate the Mafia, but the Mafia can lead them astray by casting suspicion elsewhere. Generally, players will vote for someone they think is Mafia (the Mafia will vote so that they seem to be doing this as well, and might even vote for each other to confuse the Town); when a player gets a majority of the votes, they are lynched. Their role is revealed by the Moderator, and it becomes Night.

During the Night, the thread is locked and no one can talk publicly. The Mafia, however, can speak to each other privately to plot strategy and decide who to murder before the next Day begins. In this way, they can silence members of the Town who are threats to them. At the end of the Night, the murder is carried out and another Day begins. In effect, the Town gets to kill someone, and then the Mafia gets to kill someone.

The game alternates between Day and Night until either the Mafia are eliminated, or the Mafia have killed everyone else (or nothing can prevent the same).

General Game Rules

1. All Forum rules apply while playing in this game.

2. Votes

  • Everyone has a single vote. The vote format is: Vote: Name. Bolded. With colon. With a name.
  • Simple spelling issues in the name are acceptable.
  • You may only have one vote at a time.
  • You may change your vote during the day. In order to change your vote, you must first unvote any current vote and then vote for a different player. Format: Unvote: Name. The name is also required.

3. Lynches

  • One player may be lynched per day. Only one player.
  • A player receiving half (rounded up) votes at the end of the day will be lynched.
  • A player receiving half (rounded up) + 1 votes will be locked. After a lock, votes can’t be unvoted.
  • If no player receives enough votes to be lynched by the end of the day, no one is lynched.
  • Communication
  • No one is allowed to post during the night.
  • No one is allowed to talk about this game outside of this thread unless your role specifically tells you otherwise.
  • No one is allowed to post after they die.

4. PMs

  • The first rule of forum mafia is that you don’t talk about PMs.
  • The second rule of forum mafia is that you don’t talk about PMs.
  • If you have something to say or ask, then say it or ask it without referring to or mentioning PMs.
  • Referring to information contained within a PM is OK. Quoting that information is not!

5. Modkills

  • Violating any game rules may result in modkill.
  • If you are modkilled, you lose the game.
  • Intentionally modkilling yourself will result in some type of penalty placed on the rest of the members of your alignment. The penalty will depend on the severity of the infraction. This penalty may include: factional roll block, withholding information and giving the other side an extra night kill.

6. Miscellaneous Rules

  • Do not edit your posts unless instructed to do so by the moderator.
  • Stay active. A minimum of two, contributive, non-consecutive posts are required per day phase.
  • A Temp Ban from the forums results in a modkill from the game.

7. Exceptions

  • If your role conflicts with any of the game rules, follow the instructions on the role. The role supersedes game rules.
  • I may modify these rules at any time to create a better play experience.

8. Questions, Feedback, Issues

  • I welcome all questions and feedback. If you don’t want to post in the game thread, do so via PM or the e-mail address found in your initial alignment PM.
  • If you see any mistakes or other issues, please bring them to my attention (publicly or privately) promptly.

Game Specific Rules

1. This is an Open Setup. All roles will be published before the start of the game. Roles can be found in this post.

2. You created these roles so you get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

3. Days last 48 hours and nights last 24 hours. Roughly. The first day will last 72 hours. Significant forum issues will cause extensions to the day phase and possibly the night phase.

4. The game will start on a Day phase with a lynch.

5. Night actions must be submitted 1 hour before the start of the day.

6. Rotating Roles!

  • Roles rotate during this game. You may receive the same role on consecutive days but you probably won’t
  • There is an extra phase to this game: role rotation phase. This phase comes after night phase and before day phase. All night actions are completely finished before the start of the role rotation phase. No day actions begin until after role rotations are completed.
  • Roles are randomly assigned.
  • Rotating roles do not affect player alignment.

7. When a player dies, the role they held at the time of their death also dies and is no longer available for role rotation.

8. Mafia have a factional kill ability in addition to the roles they receive that day. One mafioso is chosen as the hitman and that hitman performs the night kill.

Cootie Detector
You have a Cootie Detector!

Everyone has cooties. Duh. Cooties are spread through contact. Also duh. To combat the vile spread of Cooties, you have built a Cootie Detector. With it, you will watch every living player for the spread of Cooties. Anyone targeted that night will have new Cooties, detectable with the Cootie Detector.

In short: you are given a list of players who were targeted by someone, anyone, that night. You're not told who did the targeting nor what roles targeted each victim.

Tiny print:
This ability doesn't target anyone.
This is an active ability (can be roleblocked, copied, stolen, etc).
The list is given in alphabetical order.
If someone is targeted twice in the same night, the name only appears once.

Dr. Frankenstein
You are Dr. Frankenstein!

Your Reanimation fancy has not sat idle. You have learned so much from past mistakes: a living brain is the key! At night, you may target a living player and a dead player. The body (role) of the living player is discarded and replaced with the body (role) of a deceased player.

Short Version: You remove a role from the game (chosen by targeting a living player - the role they hold) and replace it with the role from a deceased player (chosen by targeting a deceased player).

Tiny Print:
This role has a one day cooldown. It may not be used on consecutive nights.
If this ability fails for any reason, the cooldown isn't triggered.
Only roles are affected by this ability: not players, not alignment, not extra powers
You might not definitively know the role of a deceased player.
The role is returns to life with all the same characteristics it had at the time of death (number of charges, etc).
When targeting a deceased player, only their role PM will be resurrected. Anything extra will stay dead.
This ability does not affect random role rotations.

Extra Seat Bus Driver
You are an Extra Seat Bus Driver!

Instead of the normal 2 seats, you can ferry 3 passengers. At night, choose 3 targets (A, B and C). Actions meant for A will be redirected to B. Actions meant for B will be redirected to C. Actions meant for C will be redirected to A.

Tiny Print:
You may target yourself.
You may not target the same player for multiple seats.

Forensic Scientist
You are the Forensic Scientist!

You have two actions to perform at night.

  1. Collect a Blood sample. You may collect a blood sample either from a crime scene (dead player) or from a player. You may only collect one sample per night. If you collect blood from a crime scene, you will collect blood from the victim and all killers. (Example - Collect: <name>)
  2. Return to the lab for analysis. With the available samples in inventory, you may choose to do one of the following:

  • Analyze two samples for a match. If any DNA in the first sample matches any DNA in the second sample, you will receive a POSITIVE result. Otherwise, you will receive a NEGATIVE result. (Example - Analyze: N1 and N4)
  • Clean a sample - Sometimes contamination happens. You may clean a sample, removing all contamination. Unfortunately, this also removes all prior DNA from the sample: rendering it ineffective for DNA matching. (Example - Clean: N2)
  • Contaminate a sample - You may contaminate one sample with the contents of another sample. All DNA from the contaminating sample will appear in the contaminated sample. (Example - Contaminate N1 with N3)

Vial Inventory:
The Laboratory has a single set of vials. Everyone who uses these vials will use the appropriate vial - sharing the vial if needed. There is one vial corresponding to each night of the game: N1, N2, N3, etc.

Tiny Print:
A sample may contain DNA from multiple players.
All samples collected during N1 will go into the N1 vial. All samples collected N2 will go into the N2 vial, etc.
You may perform one Collect at night.
You may perform one of Analyze/Clean/Contaminate at night.
The Collect you submit is a valid target for an Analyze/Clean/Contaminate.
Forensic Scientists won't be told the contents of each sample other than N1, N2, N3, etc.

Kingmaker
You are the Kingmaker!

At night, you must choose one other player to become the King for the day. You may not choose yourself.

Tiny Print:
This ability is compulsory. If you don't submit a name, a player will be chosen at random.
Submitting a name counts as targeting a player and is an active ability.
The King ability bestowed is in addition to a normal role. All aspects of the other role still apply.

Your chosen King will receive the following PM at the start of the day:
You are the King!

You have the ability to secretly replace who will be lynched today instead of following the normal voting/lynch rules. At any time before the end of the day, you may send a PM to the mod in order to change the lynch target.

Tiny Print:
This ability is optional.
Your identity is not publicized.
Use of this ability is not publicized.
The chosen player must be a valid lynch target for you.
If the town does not choose a lynch target, this ability has no effect.
You may override a lock.

The Last Laugh
You will have the Last Laugh!

While alive, you only have a vote. Upon death, your alignment will be hidden. You die as normal but you forever remember the name of your killer (last voter if lynched).

Should your killer die, for any reason, you will come back to life and enjoy the last laugh! You will revive during the next role rotation phase. Both you and this role will participate in the random role rotation.

Tiny Print:
If you have multiple killers, any of their deaths qualify for your revival.
You won't be given access to the dead thread while in limbo.

Meet Joe Black
You are Meet Joe Black!

Death has taken a fancy on you (and your daughter). Should you die, instead of dying immediately, Death will make a bargain with you. In return for showing Death all you know about love, passion and obsession - about living - Death will delay your final moments. You may go about life as normal with one exception: Death is interested in you AND your role in life. Death maintains your current role until the end. Death is a quick learner, taking only a single day phase to learn all there is to know from you. When Death is finished, you will die from whatever means Death prevented.

Short version: Should you die, your death will be delayed. You will stick around for the next day phase, being able to post and vote normally. At the end of that next day phase, you will die.

Tiny Print:
Nothing can stop the delayed death. You will die at that time.
Nothing can harm you during your period of delayed death. Any harmful effects will be delayed and all will happen at the end.
If delayed death is triggered, this role does not rotate or change hands for any reason.

Mime
You are a Mime!

During the day, you may choose a living role to copy. You copy every aspect of that role (night actions, day actions, passive abilities, number of charges, etc).

You're the bestest mime evah, but you can't predict the future. The actions of the original role will ALWAYS occur a split second before yours. This may cause your action to run out of charges, cause invalid targets, or other side effects. Life as a mime is hard. Deal with it.

A mime copying a dead role....won't be doing anything!

Tiny Print:
This is a daytime ability.
Your alignment does not change.
You copy only the abilities listed in the original role PM and do not copy extra abilities granted by other sources.
You may not copy the mafia hitman ability.
A list of living or dead roles won't be provided (OK, that rule change affects a role now... sorry).

Paris Hilton
Sent to Paris if there is no living BFF:
You are Paris Hilton (no BFF version)!

You can never be without a BFF. Before the end of the day, you must choose a BFF. Your BFF doesn't rotate. Once chosen, your BFF stays your BFF until death.

Wherever you go, so goes your BFF. At night, you and your BFF have some girl talk (night chat). Link to tonight’s night chat: _____.

Your BFF is forever loyal, always knows who you are, and will never vote for you. For any reason. Your BFF will enter a period of mourning should you ever die (silenced + voteless for a day).

You however, aren't nearly as loyal. Should your BFF ever receive enough votes to reach Lynch-1, you will be thoroughly embarrassed, shrug your shoulders and will place the Hammer vote on your BFF. This vote is automatic.

Tiny Print:
Your role rotates but the BFF stays the BFF until death.
You will be told the identity of the BFF, if one already exists, when receiving this role.
Your Hammer vote on the BFF will be identified as Paris.
You may not quote from any Paris night chat to any other thread but you may paraphrase information.
You may not share links to any Paris night chat with anyone.

Your chosen BFF receives the following role PM:
You are Paris' BFF!

Nothing can shake your loyalty to Paris. You won't ever vote for her lynch. If you have a vote for Paris for any reason (such as if you voted before you were made BFF), that vote isn't counted. You must unvote in your next post of the day.

You may talk to Paris at night in a special night chat.

Should Paris die, you will enter a period of mourning. You will be silenced and voteless for a day phase after Paris' death.

Tiny Print:
This is in addition to any role and abilities you have.
You stay the BFF each and every night. Paris will rotate as normal.
You will be informed of the new Paris whenever roles rotate.
A night chat QT will be provided each night.
You may not quote from any Paris night chat to any other thread but you may paraphrase information.
You may not share links to any Paris night chat with anyone. Not even Paris.
Sent to Paris if the BFF exists.
You are Paris Hilton (BFF version)!

Your BFF is _____.

Wherever you go, so goes your BFF. At night, you and you BFF call each other to have some girl talk (night chat). Link to tonight’s night chat: _____.

Your BFF is forever loyal, always knows who you are, and will never vote for you. For any reason. Your BFF will enter a period of mourning should you ever die (silenced + voteless for a day).

You will be told the identity of the BFF when receiving this role.
Your Hammer vote on the BFF will be identified as Paris.

Politician
You are the Politician!

You have been in office for too long to count and know well how the game works. Many a favor was done and many a gift was given. Your practice of scratching the backs of others left few untouched and those who owe must at some point repay. Those not in debt can be bought.

Being in a position of power allows certain privileges. A phone call to the right people lets you call in a favor or two of your own. Should circumstances deem it, you have authority at your disposal within seconds. Nothing is impossible to get and, more importantly, no rival is impossible to stop.

Daytime Ability: Bribe
During this day phase, before 24 hours have expired in the day, you may PM the Moderator the name of a player you wish to bribe and the name of the player you wish said bribed player to vote for. The bribed player must vote your chosen target before the end of the day while unvoting any other votes. The bribed vote will last for the rest of the day and cannot be changed. You can't force the bribed player to self vote and the bribed player can only vote for a legal vote target.

Nighttime Ability: X-shot roleblocker
During the night you may target a player to roleblock. Use of this ability depletes a charge regardless of the outcome. The role starts with 3 charges.

Tiny Print:
The Vote For target must be a legal target for you and the bribed player.
You can't force someone to self vote.
Only one bribe per day. If you change your mind later, tough nuggies.
The Bribe must occur within 24 hours of the start of the day.
This time limit refers to the time stamp on the start of day post.
The current number of roleblock charges are not disclosed to the politician.
Both actions may be used in the same day/night cycle.

The bribed player will receive the following action PM:
You have been bribed!

During your next post of the game, you must unvote any current votes and vote for _____. You may not change your bribed vote. Failure to do so in a timely manner will cause the mod to do so.

Tiny Print:
The mod will place your vote if you haven't done so by 36 hours since the start of the day (12 hours left in the day during a 48hr day). The mod will unvote your prior votes as needed. Your name will be used.
This time limit refers to the time stamp on the start of day post.
Once your bribed vote is placed, it can't be changed for the rest of the day.

Reflector
You are the Reflector!

Any and all non-lethal, night actions performed on you will be reflected back to the sender.

You also have a 1-shot lethal night action reflector. It will work against a single lethal night action. Any further lethal night actions won't be reflected.

Tiny Print:
These abilities are passive abilities.

The Spammer
You are the Spammer

Spam is your life. spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam.

Spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam.

Bad things can’t happen to you if you surround yourself with enough spam. You are immune to all forms of death as long as you have more posts than anyone else during the current or most recent day.

Tiny Print:
You are immune during the day only if you have more posts that day phase than all other players at the time an action was submitted.
You are immune at the end of the day (lynch) if you had the most posts during that day phase.
You are immune throughout the night phase (NK) if you had the most posts during the most recent day phase.
Ties don't count for immunity.
Mod posts don't count. You aren't competing with the mod.
Posts made during the night (after the lynch post or mod designated end of day time) don't count.
You aren't immune to modkills.
The moderator won't be providing Post Count updates.

Tarot Psychic
You are the Tarot Psychic.

With your Tarot deck, you can read the future of others. Each night, you may select another player and read their fortune by choosing a Tarot card. The recipient receives their fortune in the form of the Tarot card. The recipient retains possession of the card so long as they are alive. Once a fortune is told, that fortune is no longer in the deck and can't be used to tell the future of another. Unused cards return to the deck upon death of the recipient.

Unfortunately, you also have a terrible memory. You can’t remember which cards you’ve given out and which cards remain. You’ll spend all night looking for that specific card and never get around to telling a fortune that night.

Tiny Print:
You may not target yourself for a fortune.
Abilities/effects granted by cards are in addition to their normal role.
Cards stay with the player and do not rotate.
Attempting to give a Tarot card not present in the deck that night will cause this action to fail.

Cards:
Wheel of Fortune

Spin the Wheel of Fortune if you dare! Use this card during the day to randomly rotate roles. T
his card may only be used within 24 hours of the day’s start.
Tiny Print:
This doesn't change any role rotation rules or scenarios.
This is a day action.
The Stars

You may use this card to learn the identity of a single player considered for a night kill this night but still lives.

Tiny Print:
If multiple names fit this description, one will be chosen at random.
This is a night action.
The Moon

Skip the next day phase.

Tiny Print:
This is a night action.
The current night is unaffected. Results will still be sent
This does NOT skip the random role rotation phase.
The Sun

Skip the next night phase.

Tiny Print:
This is a day action.
The current day is unaffected.
This does NOT skip the random role rotation phase.
The Tower

Chaos abounds. Take comfort in knowing how that Chaos will affect you. You may use this card to choose which role you will receive during the next random role rotation.
Four of Pentacles

You are thoroughly satisfied with your station in life. Above all else, you desire control, stability and possession. To that end, you may use this card to keep your current role during the next random role rotation.
The High Priestess

You may use this card to protect someone this night. Their death will be prevented.

Tiny Print:
This is a night action.
This is a standard doc save.
You may target yourself.
Justice

A wrong must be righted! If you are lynched, you may use this card to balance the scales of Justice. Use this card sometime before the end of the day to target an additional player for lynching.

Tiny Print:
Your target will be lynched, then you will lynched. They happen in the same story/day but in that specific order.
This is a day action.
You may submit a "If I'm lynched, then I want Justice on ..." order ahead of time if you won't be online during the end of the day. You may not include any other stipulations/conditions.

Changes:
Oct 10 - Updated Forensic Scientist to indicate there is one set of vials that everyone shares.
Oct 10 - Updated Politician to clarify that both actions may be used during the same day/night cycle and also that the bribed vote can't be changed.

Yay! My first mod error or the game. Blind Carbon Copies aren't so blind.

ALL ALIGNMENTS ARE BEING REROLLED! Expect a new PM shortly.

If you don't have a role PM, it's because you don't have room in your box.

Wow, those are some crazy roll ideas. This game is going to be confusing I think, glad it's not too large.

It's funny how I feel I can associate many of the roles with the person who created them.

I had a full PM box. Space cleared now.

New alignments have been randomized and sent out. The exact number of mafia and other sekret details may or may not have changed.

The new PM has the subject: Your UPDATED Mafia Alignment.

Please to delete any other alignment PM from me. If you still don't know your role and/or alignment, clear your inbox.

Day 1 Begins!

Day 1 officially starts as of the timestamp on this post.

Since D1 is extended by 1 day, the time restrictions on roles with "24 hours after day start" rules are also extended by 1 day. Other days will be treated normally.

D1 ends on Thursday at 5:00 pm EST (22:00 GMT). Votes and daytime actions after that time won't count.

Players Alive:

  1. kestegs
  2. flubbucket
  3. Pyrotechnician

  11. Malevolent
  12. Moar
  13. thefranklin

There are 13 players alive. It takes 7 votes to lynch and 8 votes to lock.

No story. Sorry. My PM fiasco ruined that chance. Pretend...

I must say, I absolutely love some of the roles that were created. It is obvious that loads of thought and effort were put in for quite a lot of them! Especially given the size of the game, the Spammer is a great and a very astute addition to this game, one that encourages posting.

I have to go sleep, and I should catch up after work tomorrow.

I agree. It not only encourages the person with the role to post, but subtly encourages others to post to prevent a possible mislynch from occurring.

Looking over that list... I can only say I feel sorry for Goryani. I can see this being a nightmare to moderate.

Crazy that it does encourage spam from others as well. I feel like this could be a fast game! Lots of ways to die. I see role-claiming wont really help much either. Should we have an alignment mass claim? Everyone is town eh? Ah.

Oh wow. Some people sure got creative. Some of the combinations here are nuts. How on earth does a mime/Forensic Scientist work? Do each have a set of samples?

My first thought was to try to mimic last game with open information - people claiming what they get ASAP. But that just gives the mafia a good way of getting rid of targets they don't like being out there. So my next thought is that we should claim roles and actions the following day, to make sure that mafia are forced to stay honest with their actions. It gives more grey area about night kills, but doesn't hand mafia all the info they could want.

Preview: Sath - "Spam-off to ensure someone gets lynched."

Lol. That is how you get the thread with the most posts. Also, how sad would it make you if you were Paris's BFF and got silenced the same day you were the spammer. So many hilarious combinations.

Also a few ways to not die as well. Actually Last Laugh would make for an interesting way of confirming townies, but the process I see would take to long.

Muahaha!

*basks in the spammy goodness*

The Paris/spammer is a funny combo, but very unlikely to ever happen.

I don't see any reason to claim anything today. Some roles might make sense to do so tomorrow, but I doubt most will.
