As was mentioned earlier, Daemon tools are the way to go. It will help the OP if he is legit, and ignore is better if he is not.

Yes, you could make an image file with Nero, or if you don't have that a freeware program like free create-burn ISO.
This image, which is stored in a file on your hard-drive can be considered a copy for archival purposes and doesn't violate the EULA. To use it you would need the program mentioned earlier (Deamon tools) or PowerISO, which will make a "virtual"-cdrom drive with the cd on it. Make sure you remove the original cd before you do it or it will just run from there.

And the rest of the debate, I didn't think the OP was fishing for more than what I mentioned here, maybe I'm not cynical enough though.

I have a small beef with using an ISO image to run the game. But first, I do want legit players to be able to use the full extent of "fair use" in making their game experience the best. As I have posted in another thread, how can an ISO image be an archive if it becomes the primary mode of running the game while the original still exists? I know this is a pretty precise question, but I think it needs answering. I would like to think that it's okay to use the ISO, but what if it's not?

One other thing: consider buying a new cd drive. A decent cdrom only costs about 20 bucks. If your drive is making loud, violent noises, you should be wary of putting your discs in it. If it's only the D2 cd that makes noise, then isn't 20 dollars for a bare-bones drive worth the peace and quiet? You can keep your awesome dvd-burner, and just run D2 on the cheap drive.

well, as I understand it, and there is a old thread here on the comm. forum that explains this: you can use that archival copy for play if you don't use the other one anymore.

and ofcourse there are always options to fix this problem by paying money, but that should always be a last resort imo

I dont understand the hatred against people that don't like to use the cd itself. There are a lot of people that actually use their drives while gaming to write dvds/cds, you don't want a cd filling up your drive then do you.

The game also tends to freeze at certain moments when you use the cd in your drive. There is also (as said before I guess) NO legal argument against making a copy of software you BOUGHT. I bought multiple d2 copies, I paid good money for them, why shouldn't I be able to use them as I please?

Cool; seems reasonable to me. Shall we say that the original disc is the archive copy? It's not in use and is kept in storage.

Why shouldn't you be able to use them as you please? Because of copyright law. You have not purchased the software; you have purchased a license to use the software, and you can only do certain things with it. There is no legal or ethical way around that.

Well, actually YOU can use it as you please, as long as you dont distribute it in any way. Shove it up your cornholio, make a backup, mount an image of it, whatever.

I agree with the fact that the CDrom makes noise and makes the game freeze sometimes ingame. Which makes me think it's just an old fashioned way to play a game on the PC.
I call it a non fixed D2 bug.

All new games are full-installs, so using something (mount or D2loader) is just a forgotten upgrade in my eyes.

I have 4 PCs and did it the old fashioned way for years (1 copy on each computer). But since I recently installed Ubuntu, I had to think of a way to get D2 to work again.
Wine works, but virtual win XP with 4+4 (legit) cd keys works far better imo :grin:

btw, does anybody know if it's possible to login with 8 characters in the same game? ( I think 4 is the maximum but I'd like some confirmation of this)

Perhaps I will buy another 4+4 keys (hmmm, private baaling without crappy comments, Ubertrists, yep, I'd like that :D)
