Cheap vs. expensive stuff ... ?

I've been on the Ladder for only a few days. I've found these guides and they are great. I read a certain rhetoric over and over that I can't understand. I'm wondering if someone would kindly enlighten me. What does it mean when someone says something like:

"The runes for this runeword are too expensive .... a cheaper alternative that is nearly as good is ...."

-- or --

"For people for whom cost is no object, <itemname> is the way to go."

Are people referring to stuff actually purchased online with dollars? Or does this refer to gold pieces? Where do people 'buy' stuff?

Like many people, I am wondering how to assemble some powerful items for my character. It wouldn't be so bad if Blizzard had actually given us storage space to hold stuff. I mean ... c'mon, yes you can make a Jah rune with the Horadric cube, but to do that you'd need to devote about your entire stash space to the effort. I'm not muling -- yet -- but I'm beginning to get frustrated.

I'm playing untwinked, so any clarification about this would be great.

The do not mean real money, or in game gold. Buy in this case means trading, as in:
Item A costs 40Pgems.
If you can't get item A, item B will work and is only 10Pgems

Poison damage small charms (the 100s), Pgems, runes, sojs, and MF small charms are most often used in the place of "money".

About the runes: for most people it's hard to get high lvl runes. The chance that you'll actually find a Jah, Ber, Zod or cham rune is very low. Even almost unthinkable that you will find all of these yourself.
So to obtain these runes, you will have to trade them with others for items you find.
But the higher the rune the better item you need to trade with others.
Lets say you find a Shako and an Ocullus, you can probably trade this for an "Ist" rune.
While continueing trading, you can manage to get all the runes possible for an "Expensive" runeword. That why sometimes is reverd to "a cheaper alternative that is nearly as good"
Cheaper means that the runes used for this item to make are more easy to find/trade.

Same thing for your other question "for people for whom cost is no object, <itemname> is the way to go"
This is like allmost the same as I just explained. If you have lots of very very good stuff (sometimes mentioned as "godly" stuff) then you can afford yourself more then when you only have "bad" (or less better) stuff.
Because you can easilly trade your very good stuff with other people for other good stuff that you need to complete your character.
So people are not referring to the gold pieces that you can find or buying those items.
You wealth depends on how much high level stuff you have.

But it is actually possible to buy items on the internet for dollars.
Where they buy this I don't know, because I'm not intrested in buying items for real money to play with it in a game.

Hope this will take your questions away.

Cheers!

Hey Tors,

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. That really clears things up ... 'preciate you takin' some time to answer a nooby question

(I think I used that right ... nooby)

At your service. It's allways a pleasure to me to help people. Especially when the appreciate it.

And there exists no question that is nooby.

If you want to do this for some strange reason (I prefer to spend my money on things like food...cd's...drugs and alcohol) hang out in one of the public chat channels for liek a millisecond you should get spammed with like a million URLS)

Or just buy items on ebay.

I think buying is the only way to go from poor to godly without doing 1,000,000 MF runs or by pure luck having someone drop good items and you trade and trade and trade.

Hellforge rushing and DClone hunting (there's a topic in this forum for this) are good ways to get rich. A Unid Anny can get you Mal - Ist, and doing Hellforge rushes should yield you, for every 8 successful runs, about Gul + Ist.... Though I'm not exactly sure of this.
