Bronze GIF

DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD IF YOU ARE A BRONZE PAL!!!!

This is really starting to piss me off. For the last two days IE has frozen every time I have tried to access a page where a bronze pal has posted. The page loads up and gets as far as "receiving image: Bronze gif" then everything just freezes up. Once it even froze my entire system (I have a Mac and in the four years I have had it I have only had 8 total freezes...until now). The only way I can do anything is to force-quit IE and start again. I have been posting in the runeword search thread and keeping up to date with it on a daily basis (it is already well over 1100 posts long so this is necessary so as not to get overwhelmed) and now I cannot access it because bronze pals have posted there. Same thing in all the other forums, wherever a Bronze Pal has posted I am no longer able to access that page.

Does anyone know what is going on and how I may rectify the problem??

Seems anyone can become a pal these days.... :grrr:

He has problems viewing threads that bronze pals post in and all you see is a big "post here to ruin it for someone else" bullseye

Hope he had time to read some advice.

He will probably make a new thread in any other case.

Which you will probably post in to.

Though I find it hard to bellive that it has to do with the bronze.gif picture because then he wouldnt be able to view forums that bronze palls where browsing because its the exact same picture there.

Oh stop it, I'm getting misty. It's either a problem with his connection or browser. Not with an image.

Since another Bronze pal has already posted, I'll feel free. I highly doubt the bronze gif is causing a crash, first of all. Secondly, IE is the single worst browser to use on a mac (Or any computer, imho.), but especially on a mac. They've stopped supporting it recently as well. Mozilla, Netscape, and Safari are all substantially better browsers than IE.

I'm with Atompilz on this one. There is no reason any Mac user should be using IE when there are infinitely better options such as Firefox, Safari, Camino, etc. IE may be a necessary evil on Windows since a lot of applications require it (which only makes it suck more), but none of that stuff matters on a Mac and any specific site that requires IE really requires IE for Windows.

let's assume for a second, that a gif-file (or, any other file) can be broken in such a bad way that trying to open it crashes the computer. Keeping that in mind, let's say he downloaded such a broken gif, when he refreshed his bronzepal.gif last time.

If that was the case, then the broken gif would now be sitting in his cache, and would be loaded everytime from there, instead of getting redownloaded (if settings in IE are set to normal)

So all he had to do would be deleting the temporary internet files on his harddisc.... but he cannot read this as someone here cannot image such an unlikely case of such a realy bad broken gif-file

Yeah I had that problem too.

I was using IE basically because I have been unable, until recently, to download anything that took more than a couple of hours and even then the files were usually corrupted. I was on a crappy dial-up connection that was very unstable and tended to drop out a lot, so I was just using the best of the two browsers that came with my Mac all those years ago and IE5 is a lot better than Netscape 4, at least I found it so. Now my connection is still slow but is stable enough for me to download large files so I managed to d/l Netscape 7 last night and was able to read this thread. For some strange reason I was unable to type in the "reply to thread" windows though. So I went back and emptied my cache in IE as Jeda suggested and it seems the problem has been solved (now I just gotta figure out why I couldn't type in Netscape hmmm). Thanks to all who actually offered some advice.

I know IE sux, but as I said it was a crappy connection (and laziness for the last 8 weeks) that kept me using it. *Prays that Almighty Steve will forgive me for straying from the path* Hopefully I can say goodbye to it now. Can anyone suggest a good browser other than Netscape for Mac OS9.1 that is free? I looked at Opera but $US39 is way more than I'm willing to pay, and it seems some of the other ones suggested are for OSX.

did you stop to think that if he is actually correct about the issue, that he can no longer see the advice you have tried to give him? He put the notice not to post because he wanted help not because he hated bronze pals. While one individual may not mean much to established members (I have no idea why you would use IE on a mac) he at least deserves to see the answers to his question. Not meaning to be heavy handed, but a post that is funny to us probably is frustrating to him. . . blah blah blah. . .

hey cool it worked :)

okay free browsers: The mentioned opera can also be downloaded for free. I tried it, and it is defenitly not the worst browser. Just go to opera.com and click free download. Can't say anything on firefox, as I haven't used it yet, but a friend said it worked fine...

One nice feature about Opera is how ridiculously easy it is to skin the UI with a bitmap, so it wouldn't be hard to come up with something better looking than an ad or a blank space. Not arguing, just pointing that out.

Mozilla 1.2.1 is the last version of Mozilla that supported Mac OS 9.x. Obviously, Netscape 7.x is based on Mozilla, but Mozilla has no ads whatsoever (damn that AOL/Netscape) and 1.2.1 is more stable than Netscape 7.02, which is based on the Mozilla 1.0 trunk. Netscape 7.1, being based off of the 1.4 trunk, doesn't support OS 9.x.
