Best way to find runes

I guess I never shut up, hmm?:shhh: :lol:

Well, after reading quite a bit about the fact that finding high-level runes legitimately is about as easy as fitting a camel through the eye of a needle, I decided to ask:

What's the best way to find runes and (of various varities)? And my question is for all three difficulty levels, as all my characters are currently only in Normal, but quickly advancing.

I know about the Countess dropping a couple of runes - but I've heard they don't usually end up very high, even in Hell lvl. Hellforge, I've read, can produce some nice stuff, but only up to Gul - that's according to Orphan, I believe.

Mephy used to drop the occasional nice bit - does he still? Andy drops a nice gem or two - does she ever spill runes?

So... how much game playing does it take to find the nifty stuff, and where might one be expected to find it? At what level could I expect to find a Cham or Zod? Can runes be cubed to work up to those?

I know it's going to take me a long time to get legit good runes, but I suspect its possible. Especially as much time as I spend playing the game:D

Instead of saying thanks as I always do, I'll say merci, danke, and gracias.

To find runes:
1. Go to a high level place that's crammed with a lot of monsters
2. Clear those areas as fast as you can
3. Pray for a rune to pop out
4. Pray that said rune is not an El rune
5. Pray that the words "Connection Interrupted" do not flash on your screen after you find a good rune
6. Pick up rune and gawk at it in your inventory

As you said, Forge and Countess are a reliable source of runes. However, Forge can only drop up to Gul and Countess only gives a nice rune after about 100 billion crappy ones.

for HRs, run nith, summoner, hepasto etc
i once got a single OHM rune from summoner =/
also, countess drop HRs, but the chance is lower then summoner (data from www.d2data.net)

So it sounds like you mean Normal lvl won't count for much:yawn:

Why? Are they particularly bad, or is it because they're just #1 of 33?

I can't find nice or high runes with SP games?:hanky:

This I plan to do - I'll take photos, and I'd even email them to my family if I had any family... I'll treasure them. Honestly, when I find descent runes, I've gotten in the habit of copying them in ATMA so I can treasure them and still use them. I never re-use the copies - ever. I just keep them so I know I once found them. Hah, I get pretty attached to little bits of ones and zeros...:lol:

Runes can definitely drop in Normal, but not the high end ones.

El rune is the most common rune, and therefore, have become the poster boy for crappy runes.

Of course you can find high runes in SP games.

Common Runes
Runes are listed from most common to least common: El, Eld, Tir, Nef, Eth, Ith, Tal, Ral, Ort, Amn, Shael, and Thul are pretty common. You receive Ral, Ort and Tal as a quest reward in Act V. You shouldn't trade much for them since you can find them pretty easily with regular play. Don't fall for the "1 Shael or/+ Amn for 1 SOJ" scam. You can find these yourself. If you're thinking of freeing up space, throw those Runes away and save all Runes from Sol through Zod.

Semi-Rare Runes
Listed from most common to most rare: Sol, Dol, Hel, Io, Lum, Ko, Fal, Lem, Pul, Um. Some of these Runes are more valuable than others depending on their stats and how they are used in Rune Words or Crafted Recipes.

Extremely Rare Runes
Listed from most common to most rare: Mal, Ist, Gul, Vex, Ohm, Lo, Sur, Ber, Jah, Cham, Zod. Trade these for good stuff!

I also read the drop rates somewhere, I just forgot where.... I'll try to find the link, as its probably more helpful than what AS is telling you there.

~EDIT~
I found it, I found it!:D
Although, be warned its from right here in Diabloii.net, so it says right in the paragraph/article that it is not accurate. Not to mention, parts of Dii hasn't been updated in a while.

Full listing of comparative Rune scarcity from most common to least common. Thanks to Johan and Ensign. This list is not correct to the latest version of the game, but it's relatively close, and gives you an idea of the odds of finding a given rune.

El = 144,238
Eld = 96,159
Tir = 69,209
Nef = 46,139
Eth = 43,530
Ith = 29,020
Tal = 32,998
Ral = 21,999
Ort = 21,133
Thul = 14,088
Amn = 11,822
Sol = 7881
Shae = 6028
Dol = 4019
Hel = 2899
Io/Po = 1933
Lum = 1343
Ko = 895
Fal = 606
Lem = 404
Pul = 267
Um = 178
Mal = 115
Ist = 77
Gul = 48
Vex = 32
Ohm = 19
Lo = 13
Sur = 7.2
Ber = 4.8
Jo = 2.4
Cham = 1.6
Zod = 1

This is a comparison, so you'll find 1 Zod for every 144,238 El's. Figures subject to further tweaking before the final game.

In addition to running all over those places for the high ones you could also collect mid level runes along the way and ever so slowly cube up to high ones.

Don't plan on ever getting any runes higher than gul if you're playing single player. People play for years without finding such runes.
You can get a fair stream of amn-fal runes from hell countess, and get up to gul on your hell hellforge. To get a vex (if the upgrade recipie works on SP) you need two Guls, which is an average of 121 hell hellforges.

Yes you can cube up on single player.

I must be really lucky as the majority of my hfs have been good . hoghest rune i have found is Gul(from hellforge) also found one in pits

If you want to find high runes ( ohm+ ) yourself, I wish you good luck and that is basically all I can do. You cannot do much to improve your chances. Just ensure, that the monsters you are fighting are able to do so and kill as much of them in short time as you can. For this reason, hell cows is fine. There are a lot of them and they can drop up to zod, but it is very unlikely ( and I mean very ) that they do.

If you rely on trading, then do forges. 1/11 chance for gul, 1/11 chance for ist, 1/11 chance for mal to work with.

Hmm... Okay.

Wait a minute, though... Ist seems to be a popular rune, and one people search for. I get them all the time. Most of my SP games drop a couple... Can I use them to cube to something?

So, MF doesn't increase my chances of finding runes or gems? I basically have to get to Hell lvl and just keep playing until my hair turns grey?

Well, then, I'll just keep at it.

I envy you. I haven't encountered any runes higher than Pul drop in any of my private games - and it's possible other people pick up higher runes in public ones before I even get the chance to see it.
