best smite shield

I prefer Herald. The +skills result in better overall damage, Zakarum Shields have a tighter damage range than Vortexs, and the stats and res are hard to beat. The only advantage Exile has over Herald is the defense bonus and more chance to cast lifetap. Lifetap triggers enough for me with Dracul's, so the only thing Exile has going for me is the defense.
 
an elite paladin shield with 35-45 resist all made into a spirit is super cheap and is very effective. it has higher res than an umed HoZ except for fire if you can get a good enough base.

eth exile and upped HoZ cost a fortune so dont bother unless you really want them. exile is terrible for the price since the resists and blocking are so bad. it has unbelievable defense though.

The up'ped Herald is pretty easy to get if you actually play ladder. :rolleyes: I've got 3-4 of them laying around and I'm by no means rich, I upped them all myself.
 
i have a smealot using nonupped hoz...i have the runes ready for upgraing but im in doubt that upping it will make a big difference...i only use smite on bosses and i have alot of cb (65%). Ealier today i killed DC in under 15 sec with this so i dont think the extra str investment needed for upped hoz is worth it. 142 is ALOT compared to 89. cuz when im using nonupped the 20 str helps me cary other items such as guillaumes and my oath scourge....if i upped it it would be the heaviest item so the 20str would be wasted (exept for extra dmg)

so to sum things up ill keep my hoz as it is for now :)

HoZ still costs about an ist. that is pretty expensive. spirit is made from junk runes.
 
Definitely up the HoZ, more damage from being an elite shield. I do about 2k~ smite with hoz (I'm also a zealot) and 1k with salvation on (my uber-killer strategy)
 
Exile in an Eth Sacred Rondache with 45 resist all. Its low strength requirement, and has .5 more average smite damage than any of the other shields. Also has a better chance to block (58%) than even an eth vortex does. The only elite pally non-unique shield that has a higher chance to block is a Sacred Targe (60%).
