baaling with a nec, help please :)

Would like to run some baals with my 95 nec, just wondering if any of you have any exp running baals with a char other than the usual sorc/pala fare.

I'm looking for max efficiency and speed while maintaining survivability.

I've got a hybrid build, points in everything except the poison nova/dagger tree. Mainly a boner with some boosts in clay golem; all curses are available.

Around 1300 life and sitting at a 52% block. Sadly i'm only at 75% cast rate.

Tried a few methods, involving bonewall and confuse, but nothing I do really guarantees a safe throne, especially if I have a game full of townsitters saying "safe? safe?" over and over.

Thoughts?

You have at least 1 pt in Dim Vision so that'll help lots vs gloams. Use it, love it. MUCH more effective than confuse.

I assume you're killing with spear/spirit & following it up with CE chains?
Yes? No?

What merc are you using?

Decrepify is another very useful curse - esp for those hard hitters like Lister & Ventar and any frenzytaur boss packs you encounter.

I usually run Baal with my skellimancer & it's a piece of cake, but I haven't played a bone nec since 1.09 so am not too familiar with how spirit/spear works vs the buffed enemies in 1.10/1.11

:duh: Dim Vision!

Thanks for that.
And yeah, spot on with current tactic, amp the immediates, bone spear and CE to finish things off. Using an Insight CV merc right now (coh/thieves), maybe I should amp his damage up? I find my spears aren't taking down baddies fast enough and I get swarmed.
Sooo jealous of those Light sorcs w/ Infinity. EZ the thrones every time.

DV is your friend in baal runs, especially in a full game. i don't have many hard points in DV, but if i have mid 80's hdins and sorcs in town, i just spam DV, and put up the TP when i get to the throne. DV should pretty much guarantee safety until the cavalry gets there, even with souls and dolls around.

aside from that, unfortunately i have no advice for a boner as i use a summoner, but i think you got it right - if you give your merc some more damage, you can keep DV on, the merc will get the first couple kills to start your CE chain (and your TP would be up by then).

g'luck! =)

My tactic for my boner.

1. First I cast Decrep on monster group.
2. Than I cast my clay golem on top of the group.
3. I start to cast bone spear, I try to catch more monster in one time.
4. Then when 2-3 monsters down. I amplify them and CE. BOOM BOOM :P

For boss like baal, I just decrep him and shoot my bone spirit because i do more dmg than spear.

Good luck with your necro, you should do fine. :)

Followed this advice, and gotta say, DV is my new best friend!
Ran a ton of baals so far and I ran into some seriously sketchy thrones (gloam packs surrounded by extra fast, fana snakes) and DV saved my *** everytime, amp a couple of baddies and watch the CE do it's work.

THANKS!

I assume that you are walking. I walk too. The most dangerouse time is dealing with hordes of gloams, some of them elite. DV does not work on elites. Also, the lightning from gloams penetrates so u cant hide behind ur skels. I lost an 85+ nec in this situation.

Use Dim Vis to pin down all none elite monsters.

Get some sort of lightning absorb for gloams. Light Saber is great.

You have to stay way back. Hide in the alcoves. rely on your guys to fight almost independently.

Bone Spirit is great because you can launch it towards the bad guys and dont hav to expose ur self.

Max DV so you dont have to expose your self to cast on monsters that are on the screen.

Boost up golem mastery and summon resists so your guys will stand up to lots of damage.

CE works without line of sight so you can use it from way behind.

Line of site curses like DV require that you have vis to where you cast them, but the area of affect can go forwards through walls etc.

Thanks for the input HCKull.
Nope, I'm tele'ing. Getting there is no problem (125fcr) but upon setting up the throne, things can get ugly. DV is my best friend now (thank you for mentioning this everyone!) and usually my merc + well placed bonespears knock out the first couple of baddies and then I can wipe the place clean with CE.
Unfortunately your tips about boosting skills isn't an option as I'm 95 right now, tryin' to level this nec to 97...
Thanks!

I've found that in hell, you need to immediately run up onto that thin T shaped platform that Baal spawns on and decrep and lock him in place there. It keeps him (usually) from spawning a clone of himself and its much less likely those tentacles will sprout up as well. If he gets out into the open, its a much harder fight, so as soon as you enter the chamber hit the ground running and get to him fast. once you lock him in place, sometimes its good to make a tp go to town and then immediately back to get your whole army over there.

I hope that makes sense.

If your merc is properly equipped, taking down Baal in hell isn't that hard a proposition. There's just a split chance **** could go wrong with the trapping maneuver detailed above.

Dealing with minions:

The easiest way to kill minions with your army is to control space and the mobs that Baal throws at you. First: Baal will cast decrep on your entire party if you veer to close to his perch near the portal to the chamber. The line of demarcation seems to be below the 'staging' area where he spawns the minions (that square of space between the four lanterns (or whatever they are) in front of his perch at the top of the stairs). Stay below that and he's much less likely to cast decrep. For each wave of baddies, between waves, move back down towards the entrance to the throne area to 'pull' your army away from him. This has a couple benefits: Your skellies will form a 'fighting line' and corral the minions into tight groups and the minions will not spawn right in the middle of your skeleton army, which can be disasterous with the pit lords (the winged demon looking things) and Lister's group (the last mob that spawns). It also guarantees (almost) that you'll have at least 3 skellies focusing on one of the spawned monsters, giving them a much better chance for them to quickly make a corpse for you to pop with CE.

I've found that attract is also very useful here. Casting it on the council when they spawn makes them target themselves with hydra and can give you precious seconds to get your army focused on taking them down and corpse popping. I've used Dim Vision, but Attract seems alot more effective in keeping enemies tightly packed and distracted.

I throw my clay golem behind or in the middle of the bad guys and he attracts their attention. Hopefully he lasts long enough to keep them busy while you move into postion to take them down.
