Avenger or zealot?

I've had a good look at the paladin guides on this forum and as a new player to the paladin character wanted to know which of the above two is more viable for a solo player in hell? Or will they both face problems in hell?

Also, any input on the best merc to go with either would be great.

Thanks for looking.

Avengers are viable yes and without much trouble. Immunes are not an issue ince they deal massive physical and mixed elemental damage. Against iron maiden they just use their fists. Mana need is one problem they have.

Zealots can vary, the most common are the fanatic one (my all time favorie build, zeal+fanaticism) which is in fashion because he can be a very effective uber killer, the shock zealot (or tesladin, zeal+holy shock) and the frost zealot (zeal+holy freeze). There is also the holy fire variant but it is the most challenging to play, still I have one that is viable in hell.

Among all the most powerful is probably a well equipped fana zealot while the tesladin can be very effective with cheap gear. Fanatics have problems vs physical immunes and iron maiden which can both be solved if you keep the wonderous gimmershred in switch.

One thing that constantly plague Frost and Tesla zealots is the lack of IAS and AR. The cheapest solutions to these problems are

Nords Tenderizer (180 - 210% bonus to AR)
Lightsabre (ITD)
Cresent Moon (!!! Best weapon for a shocker hands down, ITD)
Demon Limb (enchant charges)
Baranar's Star (200% Bonus to AR)

You can shael all of them for greater speed.

other great solutions will include the angelic ammy and ring combo or if you are lucky (or rich), a rare helm or circlet with %AR based on character level or a nice Metalgrid.

A crescent moon is great for a tesla but you will face problems vs Light immunes, for those that have solved the ar problem azurewrath is great as well.

vengener definately wins out for solo hell. zealots suffer greatly from immunes.

It takes an azurewrath for most types of zealots to forget about immunes. Nothing is immune to physical cold and magic at the same time .

With a good percentage to activate crushing blow (around 50% is usually enough), there's no immuned monsters that will cause trouble...You basically do a crushing blow every two hits, and if you have alot of speed and decent AR, monsters go down quickly, especially if your mercenary has some CB as well! Having 1 point in the Sanctuary aura helps to deal with Undead physical immuned monsters as well...

My first pally

My first paladin ever, and I started playing the original, was/is a zeal/smiter this patch. I've actually found it very fun. Normally I choose the more outcast magic chars b/c they were fun and interesting (like bone necros before they were good), but uber trist makes it fun and challenging to put parties together- makes melee worth it IMO. I would try the zeal/smiter. I just found out today that they're supposedly cookiecutter, although I've found that most people just scream at me for not having a "pure" build. Anyway, I digress, a cb based zsmiter is fun if you can get the gear.

Strange that you mention this - but I have a lvl 90 avenger (with a lvl 27 conv aura aand veng attack) and my brother owns a lvl 90 zealot (with a similar fanat lvl aura) and I find them both very good - specially when we play together, because the aura's that we give each other are just awesome...

When teamed up in a party, he makes me much faster and more accurate and on the other hand my conv aura just cuts so much monsters def and res that my brothers zealot just shreds them in pieces in no time. It's a great combo...

They are both great characters - my avenger has 95/90/95/90 res in hell (thx to good old Guard ang and passive res from skills) so he is hard to brake and dies rarely. On the other hand my bro zealot has unmatched speed for monster / boss killing thanks to high Crushing blow and max speed so he progresses much faster through hell. He tends to die more often specially because zeal is hard to stop (it delievers 5 strikes) and one iron maiden in a melee fight is almost certainly a death for him.

We did numerous Uber runs so far and really have no problem in killing the 3 brothers.

I would still give the zealot a slight edge, but whatever decision you make - you cant make a mistake!

I 100% agree with mdzele. Note that an avenger can face iron maiden by keeping his fists as switch. This way he'll be dealing practically only elemental damage...Why don't you make both :)

Thanks for all the advice people - very helpful. Going to try an avenger for now I think.

Time being the main reason why i do not make both - always seems to take me an inordinate time to get a character to anywhere a decent level!
