The biggest thing I have found would be an XP shrine right before you enter the church area with the named skeleton mage, or, right next to the smith. I remember killing the smith (I forget his name) along with all of his cronies+a few named guy in the area and getting about 4 levels at level 16.

The exp shrines help of course but their placement isn't that crucial, I don't think. That is, the early one near the Den Of Evil may help add a few thousand exp early, which seems like a lot because that is several levels when you are so low, but later on that few thousand exp is just a drop in the bucket when you are moving from level 21 to 22, for example. It is very nice to level quickly with an exp shrine or two in the Blood Moor or Cold Plains because you'll kill quickly early on, but later on I don't think it turns out to be that much help- assuming that you get there, of course...

The real help would be killing the special guys. With /p8, killing Pindleskin and all of those undead guys with a level 34sh Meteorb sorc netted about half a levels worth of xp without an xp shrine.

The reason I name those places is because you are seemed to be guaranteed a named enemy there, which will really push your XP over the edge, especially with /p8 and an xp shrine.

Also, sure, that bit of XP at the beginning wont matter in the long run if you weren't playing a challenge like this, but every level counts, especially with an HC character.

Princess_Diana finally got her decoy and wow what a difference. Too bad she won't have a valk to help against Duriel. That demon is the reason I am playing so slow and steady right now, cubing rejuv potions and saving antidotes and thaw potions. She is level 25, hopefully to reach level 27 by the time she goes through all the false tombs and reaches Duriel. I got lucky and found an ethereal 2 os kite shield which I put an ELD in, and I have 2 ELs which will become an ELD for extra block for the big battle. I'll have 6 rejuv potions (super sized of course) and a one-point wonder in jab to carry the day. Real hurdle #1 coming up this weekend!

Rapunzel has settled on her skills for foreseeable future (however long that is). It will be BF on the front mouse and CoS on the back mouse. Shadow worrier, fade and a bit in one of the fire traps will fill out the rest her points. She’ll not go for shadow master. With SW she can control the skills SW uses; a big mana saver.

That sounds extreme. About level 21.4 is my personal best after act 1. I killed at least 3 Ghoul boss packs with XP shrine effect that time.

I have decided to give priority to the three classes I have not taken to Guardian in an SPF tourney. So probably no barbs for a long time...
But I think barbs can do pretty well in this tournament. Better crowd control than most classes, and he has the life and skills to tank better than most. He will go through many weapons, though, unless he can find repairing or indestructible ones.

RunAway died to Duriel. She had no trouble getting that far on P8 and thought Duriel, on P1, would be a walkover. He killed the shadow in one hit, meaning BF was next to useless since he charged me next. Normal attack, burst of speed, CoS, and a full beltof rejuvies made it a decent battle, but Duriel prevailed with about 1/4 life remaining.

Not sure if I'll have time to try this again with another character or not. If I do, I'll probably use a necro or a amazon.
 
Durial is really hurting everyone in this tourney. RIP to you guys. I don't know about anyone else, but when I found durials chamber, I put the staff in then just killed monsters until I was completely full with various potions. I knew if I stayed and cleared the false tombs for too long I'd run out of potions.

Anyhow, I stopped the other night after I found the Flayer Jungle WP. I decided to kill everything on p8 in act 3, and I'm getting really good xp. I also went into the swampy pit (which I think I've only ever done once) and I found my end game gloves. I'll post them when I get back to my apartment.
 
Hmm, necros are still dominating the dead list. I'm begining to wonder how my choice of enchant sorc may work out. I'm got the feeling duriel will be the one to bring me down, since i favour the big high-damage slow-speed weapons at the moment. I'm gonna have to try stocking up on thawing pots and purples for tha encounter.

I would tell you guys about my 2 hour struggle with Dury but I'm too busy shaking from how unbelievably epic it was.

I hate this tournament so, so much...

My hawkmail broke.

Dury dropped a nice rare ring and some nice rare eth self repairing boots.

Andy has just fallen, but it was an interesting experience.

First, NO ANTIDOTE POTIONS! Yeah, I was majorly bummed. No tomb of identify in the jail either. Was feeling pretty wretched when I saved at the Inner Cloister.

I did full clears in the catacombs on levels 1 and 2, players set to 5 to hopefully get some good item drops. My sword broke through level 1 and I was down to under a hundred arrows halfway through level 2 before I found 4 quivers. Managed to get my first dire wolf and the going was easier... better when I hit level 19 and got my second wolf. Still no luck with the antidotes.

Level 3 catacombs were an exercise in frustration. I wanted to leave at least half the level unexplored with monsters in case I needed more potions and sure enough I explored the entire level before I found the stairs to level 4 :sad2: .

Thats when the u know what hit the fan. Several of the lightning shooting demons (cannot remember their name.. foresaken?) waited for me at the stairs. My wolves attacked while my raven blinded them and I cast fissure while they were locked in combat with my minions. Soon they fell, and I left all the potions lay, since my belt was full.

The next room was the usual carver bunch... three shamans, a bunch of the little guys, one vampire and a couple of the lightning demons. I ran around casting fissure under the shaman while my wolves attacked whatever was handy. Once the shamen were dead, the others fell quickly. Not much for drops... extra arrows, minor/light potions, a couple tp scrolls and gold. Making sure my belt was full I opened my inventory and dropped every mana and life potion on the floor in the two rooms, then entered Andy's room.

More lightning demons, shamans and carvers. Kept them near the door and finished them before proceeding forward. Cast a fissure way ahead as we approached Andy. Cast another and she ran through it, shooting poison and engaging my wolves. Both went down, then my oak sage. I was alternating between fissure and dire wolves, healing myself from stray poison shots (my equip combined for 75% reduced poison duration :thumbsup: ). I recast my oak and ran into the next room, completely out of potions.

The split second my oak held off andy, I was able to refill my belt with the potions I dropped. Andy came in too fast and it turned into a chase... Me throwing fissures and an occasional dire wolf while Andy chased me around that circlular crevasse. At one point, my life dipped to a quarter from poison and I was able to refill with one of my dropped potions. Managed to keep ahead, and when she stopped to shoot poison, I took the hit and pinned her down with two dire wolves. A mana potion plus 2 fissures finished her off. It was a RUSH... not knowing how I would win then the relief I experienced when she burned into a pillar of fire. Got a Set Item chain glove (can't remember what set off hand) and a rare kite shield for my trouble, plus an amythest. After the portal to town opened, I explored the rest of her room and grabbed some more goodies before ending for the night. Time to party in Lut Gholein.
 
k I got a problem.
I'm running in tal rasha's tomb and my guy seems to be stuck between a table and a wall :s I can get him out of there, been trying for like 10min.
now I can save and exit because it wouldn't be to escape a life threatening situation, but I would have to rerun tal rasha's tomb. there is no way I can walk trough that place without killing the monsters.

Bummer,dude. That happened to my necro whilst I was in the mausoleum levelling up. The only thing to do is S/E, and start again. I guess most people have been in that situation before, at least you weren't trapped by a MLSE bad-boy...:tongue:

Played briefly this morning, never thought I'd be so happy to have my horaddric cube :grin: I'm noticing my pets are dying easier now (act one, dont think I had a single wolf die before Andy), so its going to be interesting to see how well things hold up on my way to the Maggot Lair
 
Golemancer appears to be working nicely, but veerryy slooow - approx 7hrs to do Act 1, full clears, /p8. Andy's poison ripped thru golems very fast, even on /p1. Still, hopefully IM and a nice level of golem mastery will do for Duriel.

Andy dropped useless stuff, and the countess dropped an eld. Still, at least I'm still alive and pushing slowly forward. No more D2 today, need a break from it before my concentration totally goes and I get owned by one of thode poion throwing cat things...:afro:

It's odd to see that after 1-2 weeks of a tourney the highest lvl char is only lvl 33 and just starting A5 - makes me feel a lot better about losing chars early on!

After hearing all of the horror stories of Duriel, and encountering a few of my own previously, I was very worried about her. So Anubis took things very slow and made sure to level up to getting Decrify and 6 skeletons before attempting to tackle Duriel. It was something of a letdown, only lost the golem once and no skeletons. Granted I did drop the player settings down to p1 from the normal p8, but since Duriel never drops anything nice anyway that was no big loss. The Summoner was actually harder as I had to reraise my army at least 4 seperate times since they kept getting bottlenecked by the minions and then firewalled to death by the Summoner. Onward to Act III...

I noticed that too EmperorMoo. Thought it was rather odd as normally someone is in the middle of NM by now at least. Just means this tourny will be around for a while, which is nice since my pace is rather slow normally anyway.

Not going to have much more time to play this weekend, but since I'm off of work the entire next week I should make some nice progress.

this was the most insane fight so far. decided to do duriel on /p8 because well I was at fairly high lvl and my skeletons were doing verry well. besides if I had changed it I would have felt like I was cheating.

anyway I enter with my golem, 6 skeletons and 4 skeleton mages. hoping this would be like a walk in the park. the moment I enter my screen freezes and I can do ****. when I finally can move my necro again I have only 2 skeletons and 2 skeleton magy left. casted decripify and my golem again and went midieval on his ***. made myself a malice axe specially for this occation and start hitting the b$tch. my other skeleton and magy soon fell to duriels wrath and left me with only a pitiful lvl 1 golem to cast over and over again. had to use 9!! big rejuvination potions and 3 thawing potions. ended up killing the bastard with 40 life left and no potions at all.

never knew sp could be this much fun :)
