A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Reached my goal.. .Stony Fields. Found one new unique, first exceptional too, and what do you know... It is a poignard :P What are the odds for a daggermancer to land his first exceptional unique as a poignard? Well, pretty low imho. It wasn't a high end roll (218% enh. dam out of 200-240), but the +1 to necro levels and the prevent mosnter heal are helpful.
I will miss the ITD and the resists on the diggler though. Actually, I immediately missed them, because the very first monster pack I encountered in the Stony fields was a Dark Ranger FE Ce... Exactly the two resists that had takena 25% tumble after loosing the diggler...

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Merlin, that is one sweet amulet. It's a game changer if you ask me. That teleport is a must-have for tough spots that you might find yourself in, such as surrounded by wraiths in the arcane sanctuary, or in the claw viper temple. The fact that it gives you so much more in addition makes it a wonderful tool. Put it to good use! For the weapon, I'd probably use the spineripper myself over the diggler, but against dangerous enemies you will likely be turning to Poison Nova anyway, right? You'll have to do that against skellies as it is, if you want to help the merc in those situations.

I've brought along some pictures to show some of the funny encounters of Moe recently. They might go back a couple of weeks, but are still interesting and show how completely different the playstyle is from many others in the game.

Staying clear of the skeletons.

Boss pack of wraiths at the entrance to the Arcane Sanctuary. These were the guys that killed the IG and merc in under five seconds. I'd say there were probably 15 of them stacked together in this picture, but I could only tell when I came back and they'd spread out a bit. Here's a good shot of how the bad guys get clumped up in the AS. They just kept coming and coming. Confuse is incredible for this. It'll be fast if I get that far in hell difficulty.

Whoa-stave! I'll load this beast up for some major IG helping. Slow, blind, freeze, OW, -def/hit. Everything a good IG needs. I'll even socket it and put in this sweet +30% Fire Resist jewel that dropped recently to make him more like Sparky against inferno monsters. I'll be able to get his fire resist into the 90s with that jewel.

In the flayer jungle I confused a group of flayers, and soon there were so many enemies on the screen that I had to run to two different places to capture and give a picture of what the carnage-scale was all about. 1. 2. When confuse had worn off (after most of them had been blown up properly with a level 22 CE, the game must have switched off their AI or something. The remaining 5 flayers just stood there rocking back and forth on their feet until Hazade chopped them into pieces. I've not seen anything like that happen before. There were literally dozens of critters dying in seconds. Beautiful!

Here is another shot in the flayer jungle. It just isn't fair when they can't get across the bridge. Rest assured that mere seconds later they were all dead.

Snowclash drop. Nothing fancy, but still a grail item for me.

Travincal's where I started last night (I ran to the WP without killing anything before) and the weak point of confuse is shown here. I brought about a million zealots right to the WP and had to scramble a bit, having an NDE with a Heirophant blizzard along the way. I wasn't quick on the rejuv potion for sure. Need to be better about that. Just look at that carnage though. Probably the bloodiest I've ever seen the Travincal WP.

One of the council dropped Lycander's Flank. Useless for this tournament but still a grail item for me. The Durance of Hate was not hard. I used Confuse more sparingly than usual because I knew there were corridors and rooms on my flank that I needed to stay quiet until ready to be dealt with. I dropped to /P3 for level 3 in case the same thing happened as it did last time with Wyand and Meph in the same room. I did not use confuse until I stirred up some blood lords during the fight with Meph (who I kept decrepified and helped against the Blood Lords once or twice). Mephisto's quest drop was pretty good. The gauntlets were a grail item also. In the Durance I also found an ethereal Bec with 3os, so the merc's weapon got over twice as damaging, going from an ethereal halberd to an ethereal bec-de-corbin. Overall so far so good. I'll probably run two more times because it wasn't hard at /P3 (except for the conviction aura on one of the council members who tag teamed with a blood lord pack).

Actually, I intend to use PD as much as possible, and not use PN at all. For now, I confuse the skellies, and I Posion Explode any corpses they walk over. Not too fast, but it works. Yes, I really loved that amulet. I doubt it will be switched out, once I decide to don it. Actually, I am going to list that one as my best find :P Not that I dislike the spineripper, mind you :P

I have to find out some stuff about screenshots and all. It might liven up my stories, I know yours are a good addition. But the imageshack takes forever to load (prolly cos it's american), so I need a european site. And some instructions on how to make screenies (I think it's simply PrintScreen right? Or F11?)

Decided to go and free Cain. Ok, so, to make a long and tedious story short.. I went and freed Cain. :P That is about as interesting as it got as well, allthough about 4 heropacks of monsters (1 skellie archer, 2 of those light green rogues, and Ironwood hisself) made life mighty interesting. Two of them had aura's, one fanaticism, one might. Ironwood had LE on him as well... That made for an interesting 7 or 8 minutes, let me tell you :P)

Next up, the countess. I'll run her a couple of times as well, trying to get some runes going (hopefully a shael, so I can make Rhyme).

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

I'm on the prowl for a Shael and a Lum, as I know my resistances will stink once I get to hell. I don't hold much hope for a Mal but it'd work too. I found a decent necro head that can make a Rhyme, but I'm still searching and holding out hope for a +Golem Mastery head that will accept the Rhyme runes. I did find a teleport amulet, but sadly it has no other mods (golemlord's amulet of teleport anyone?). I think your kill speed will be fairly slow in acts II and IV in hell with only using PD. I made a poisonmancer in SC with some good gear and he was sometimes tedious since skeletons have naturally high poison resists. I'd confuse them, and right afterward hit them with a big dose of Lower Resist for some help with the toxins.

As far as screenshots go, if you simply press PrntScrn, you'll get garbage. I got this same tip from another forumite during the Afterlife Tournament, so here goes. Go into the options menu and keyboard controls. Print Screen will not have a key for it; change that so you can press a key and take a shot. I use the spacebar because my fingers are close anyway and it takes no effort, even in the heat of battle. The screenies will then be saved in your diabloii directory (in my case, the runeword folder). I used imageshack even though others swear by photobucket, because it requires no sign-in, registering, and doesn't make me a spam receptor like photobucket does. Sometimes it is slow for me as well.

My last rumination - has Serdash retired SneezyBones?

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Hmm. By the way, Once again, an excellent progress report. Moe looks like he is having fun, and I haven't heard you about rusty's short lifetime anymore... has that been fixed?

Great suggestion! For now, all spacebar does is turn of my minimap, which I basically leave always on, so that is an excellent option, to use it for printscreen :P

As for Serdash, I dont think he has retired. He has said in the Mafia thread he is currently occupied with other (RL probably) matters, which take away from his free time. I expect he will be back once things calm down a bit.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

What else are you going to do with your thumbs anyway, right? Mine are not dexterous enough for anything but a quick spacebar slam. Maybe I needed to put more points into personal dexterity when I was growing up.

I don't peruse the mafia threads, so I missed Dashy's RL chaos. My life will change a lot in a couple months when I get married, so I relish my gaming time while still a bachelor.

As for Moe, he kills a LOT faster than I thought he would. Confuse is just incredible. I think it'll get even faster in hell when I drop to /P1 and my radius for CE is 10 yards. I have stopped complaining about Rusty's life because I have been smarter about keeping him alive. I'm still using low-priced goods, but I've been on the Malice sword for a while and I like it. I imagine Diablo will kill this guy but I have that halberd malice and the two slows-by-50% weapons in reserve for just such an occasion. It has helped that I found a +2 summoning skills amulet. Rusty's life is now 3760, which will be over 5000 once I go to hell difficulty. I'll feel safe dropping good items on him then.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Just completed my second rerun of the countess.
First one netted me a maelstrom unique yew wand (useless for my build), the countess dropped me an Amn rune.
The seonc one dropped nothing useful on the way to the countess, but the countess was very nice indeed.
Lookit them runes!
Suddenly I can make two rhyme shields... good too, because I will replace the first head with a seocnd better one the moment it drops... I will now make Rhyme in a zombiehead with +2 to confuse, and 3-7 PD over 3 seconds (which is a downer, but I'll live).

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Ok, re my previous post... I shouldn't have predicted that I would live. Cos this is the end of Skellies career.
In the Pit lvl 2, we met a HF Dark Archer hero, a champion pack of dark Stalkers, and somewhere in there, something cursed as well. I got trapped in that tiny little hole at the entrance of the lvl... First of went the merc, then the golem, and then me.

Bye bye to lovely ammy, spineripper and the other junk. It was fun while it lasted though :P
Skellophobic, lvl 52 daggermancer, died NM pits lvl 2

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

RIP Skellophobic. Your curse was legendary.

Moe ran Meph two more times, garnering two things: jack and squat. The last time I ran him he dropped two blues, with 300% MF. Awesome.

Act IV wasn't too hard. I dealt with Insane Leaper Posse II: the Reprise, in the Outer Steppes. There were no gloams in the Plains of Despair. I kept it on players8 to maximize experience until the CS, where I went to /P1 because of IM. Merc and golem died periodically, but nothing too hard. I got both a Dol and a Shael in the CS, so I was pretty stoked to find the head for a Rhyme before hell. The HF drop was a Sol. I didn't even know it went that low, but I guess it does. Infector's pack was easy. I did Lord de Seis second, and his fanaticism pack got too close to Moe, after quickly killing the golem and merc, and started hitting Moe, even while confused. My life was at about 700, and it went down quickly. My panic reflex hit the "3" key, whereas my rejuv row was "2" (I usually would have made both 2 and 3 rejuv rows by now but failed). So Moe died the same day as Skelliphobic. No chance to avenge his death in the Pits. I was pretty upset about it as it was just a simple mistake and could easily have been avoided. I may rebuild because no one has been able to take a Golemancer untwinked to the end of the game. And I still need a Nec for my sept.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

RIP Moe. They say that shared pain lessens the grief. Funny, I'm not feeling it :P
Ah heck, I have an Avenger running about Old... He'llrevenge us both or die trying (Guess on which one of those two options I'm betting my money? :P)

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

I was so mad about that dumb dumb death that I restarted this one. So this thread will be around a tad longer anyway. Minime killed Duriel last night. He's got a Shadowfang IG, who lasted all through the battle, and has 10 points in GM and 3 in Summon Resist to keep him safe. His merc is an Act II one, and I got really lucky with the savage cube recipe, scoring a savage poleaxe of frost on the first try. He just melted guys all through act II. This is much quicker than Moe in normal. As soon as I get a few levels and a cold jewel, I'll be using my second savage roll, a 80% ED partizan. I have also found a Biggin's Bonnet, which is on the merc now, and the 30% ED on that helps too.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

RIP Moe and Skellophobic!

@Merlin: that was an awesome Countess drop. Amazing!

@OS: Good luck with your new character. I'm reminded of a similar necro I had in the Rare tourney (skellies/revives banned), which had maxed CE, standard utility curses, desert merc, but maxed CG/Mastery (as opposed to IG), with a little Summon Resist. IIRC it had about 14,000 life in Hell, 60+ %slowing, 20+ %PDR, and cold immunity. Plus it was spammable (convenient mostly for relocation) and immune to knockback. Amp, Might merc + CE mopped up. All things considered, I believe it to be a much less difficult path than IG.
So if you can succeed with the IG approach, kudos to you.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

IW, thanks, but I failed with the last one and Minime isn't even out of normal yet. That 60% slowing must have been great. Since this tournament requires cold damage on the merc, that yields itself to well to a HF merc, which should be a similar effect, though perhaps not quite 60%. And the spammable part of the golem is flexibility lost for me, but it didn't seem to be a problem. I thought it would be, especially in areas of leapers and enemies that run away and scatter at times, so I kept the rogue all through normal, but after act II NM with Moe, and all through this guy's travels, a little tactical foot movement has solved the issues. I was really frustrated myself with the IG's frailty, but he served much better once mastery was maxed, so this go-round I am doing that first, before CE. Extra points in the end will go into summon resist, and hopefully I can get some extra fire resist on an item to make him stout all around. I was going to do that with the Woestave with Moe, but never made it that far. Sadness.

Onward, as Minime has gotten a bit farther. Here's a good shot of confused flayers. Lots of em. Meph was easy, but I don't remember the drop.

I lucked out and got a fire shrine right near where Diablo spawns, as shown here. I decided to try the trick that Merlin taught us, about the fire shrine taking 1/2 life from everything in range, including act bosses. It took me a couple of minutes to get him over there (and lost the Shadowfang IG, bummer) but this is what happened to him. That's pretty sweet if you ask me. I decided to take him on /P3 because of that shrine. Usually I'd wimp out because I have no extra resists on the merc but went a bit higher because of that shrine. Maybe I should have waited until he was half dead to touch it and see if it kills him or if it is simply like a 50% static field thing. His drop. The ring was a cathan's (his second) and the Battlebranch wasn't ethereal. Bummer. As it doesn't add cold damage it will likely sit on the sidelines for a while longer.

edit: if you're wondering where Diablo's body was in the last picture, the merc shattered him into ice cubes. No bones about it!

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Sorry to hear about the loss OS and Merlin. RIP to both your characters. Keep it up though, Ive been reading your progress this whole time. I would of joined you but Guardianed the Necro already.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

@OS: Very very slick move with the Fire Shrine.
Personally I've only had one instance of that shrine near Diablo, it's a rare treat. You used it correctly, it's best to apply when monster is at full health. If applied at half-health, it would take him to quarter-health, wasting its full potential. Looks like Diablo was taken down below 50% health in your screenshot. Maybe your merc scored some hits before you hit the shrine?

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

I noticed that too; he may have taken a few swipes at Rusty, hence damaging himself. A couple of times I had to port back to save the Rusty because Diablo wouldn't charge to the right spot. I was pretty diligent about moving enough to keep the merc stupidly following me but the golem didn't follow most of the time. There were enough lightning hoses and fissures that I wasn't paying attention to Diablo's life until after I hit the shrine, and even then it was a lucky screenshot that I got it while the shrine message was still up. So let's go with Rusty's thorns on that.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Well that was a long time between updates. I've been preoccupied with dying in the paladin tournament. I'm going round robin now because I can't take defeat so many times in a row.

Minime has killed normal Baal. It wasn't hard, as Baal pretty much sat there the entire time since I had him decrepified. Lister's pack was far more challenging (I did them at lowly /P3 because I remembered how long it took last time and I had no OW). He also killed the cows, not without some drama, as I made a zephyr bow for speed on switch and accidentally had it on and started firing arrows at cows when I needed to be running. Necro's with no dex can't tank a hit from a cow, let alone about five. I thought it was deeds but somehow I escaped. It didn't help that the cow king was so close to the red portal. In this picture I had already made five trips to Akara to sell stuff to be able to see the rest of the items on the screen. Confuse is awesome!

Right now Minime has maxed out Golem Mastery and has 6 in Confuse and 8 in CE. I'll get Confuse to 8 and then complete CE. Act V was terrible at /P8; so slow. I think I'll keep it at /P5 for NM.

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Nice going OS - Seems like you have to try alone for a bit longer though... But I will keep reading up on your progress of course! And that Fireshrine trick is awesome. Works like a charm!

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Site's pretty slow so I'll keep this short.

Minime has rescued Cain. He found a 4os long sword so made a spirit to help with skills, found a +5 res all large charm, and the coup de grace, a green amulet dropped in the Underground Passage from (I think) a champion bone archer. Upon ID it turned out to be Tal Rasha's. That's an item I've never seen, and a very powerful one at that. I never knew it could drop so early in the game, since you can't wear it until level 67, and he's at 46 or 47 now...

Re: A new tournament: "Make no bones about it"

Minime moved forward from the Dark Wood WP a couple nights ago to the end of the act, and I decided that due to Rusty's immunity to poison that I'd try Andariel at /P8. Her poison wave must have some physical damage to it, because Rusty couldn't stand more than 4 or 5 of those (even without her taking a swipe at him) before I had to leave and heal him. Anyway, I left the merc dead after she killed him twice and used Amp and Rusty's thorns (I can cast him at level 7, as I have +6 necro summoning skills for the creation). She still managed to kill him twice, including the first time which was the Soul Harvest (30% OW and 20 res all is a nice IG item) and another piece of junk scepter. Eventually she went down, dropping Headstriker and a Manald Heal. I was sure hoping that'd be a SoJ or Nagelring, but alas no.

Stepping into act II, I refitted with a HF mercenary and equipped an ethereal Lochaber Axe Malice for him, which sped things up a bit, as the cold damage came then from his aura. The IG came from his discarded partizan. I am on the lookout for a 4os exceptional polearm as I already have the runes for insight. I don't really need the aura, but I'd like to give the Malice to Rusty to actually have him help in battles rather than just tank.

I wasn't paying close enough attention in the sewers when about 15 burning dead archers shot Minime all at once, taking his life from over 500 to about 50 nearly instantly. I was quick on the rejuvs before the next salvo came in and survived. Close one! Soon I'll have the radius on Confuse (CE is at 18 and then only confuse is left) to cast it and catch things around corners for safety purposes.

edit: oh yeah, I ran countess three times but didn't get anything higher than an ort. Better luck next time!
