A diary of a necromancer

1) Yes. Not only does upping the /player setting increase the probability of a rune drop, but also increases the probability of higher quality rune. IIRC, it has to do with how runes actually drop. First monster is killed, then it rolls for drop, if it rolls for a rune drop, it then goes on to another roll to determine quality. There is a probability that mob has for dropping the best rune it can (its very low), if it doesn't hit that, it cycles down to next rune, at slightly higher probability, and on until it either hits positive on a roll, or rolls on down to El. It's in this determining of quality that /player setting has biggest impact, as it makes the probability for the 'roll down' much nicer.

2) ... I'm not finding that in my notes, but any charm from NM LK or further is able to roll a skiller prefix. (Or Great Marsh, maybe... not sure on that but am sure on LK) Also, yes, 3pgem(any type, including skulls)+grand charm (or any magical (blue) item).

3) In HC, I'd focus on hp and resists before much of anything else. If you can't live long enough to kill them, everything else is moot...

'Rhyme' is pretty hard to beat, but if you find that "perfect" necrohead (+3 Revive/+3 Corpse Explosion/+3 wtf-ever-you-like-its-already-epic) a 'Splendor' (Eth+Lum) can be pretty sweet...

+1 to All Skills
+10% Faster Cast Rate
+20% Faster Block Rate
+60-100% Enhanced Defense (varies)
+10 to Energy
Regenerate Mana 15%
50% Extra Gold From Monsters
20% Better Chance of Getting Magic Items
+3 To Light Radius

... if you can cover resists elsewhere, but isn't that what charms are for? Also notice the lack of Increased Chance of Blocking, but has Faster Block Rate. That's awesome for necro who has crappy block rate, and doesn't want to get block-locked...

When I was more active in D2, a few years back, it was invariably suggested that LK NM is the first place where a skiller charm can drop. I never saw that assertion challenged and this was a time when code-readers were regular contributors.

They can drop in flayer jungle / great marsh and forward. LK is just more convenient

You are quite right.

I had conflated "best place to look for plain skillers" with "first place they can begin to drop".

I have fired my faulty memory and currently am looking for something to replace it.

Thanks for the info

I've now equppied smoke and replaced my mf helm with lore. Rhyme does not work in helms!!!. Just waiting on shield now.

Andariel is toast but had a lucky escape in the sewers. Came out of a junction, boss archer with fana to me left and boss archer pack to the right with either might or holy fire. Didn't hang around to find out. Less than a second there and my life was almost gone. Chugged a purple and ran like hell to a safe tp spot. Tough crowd.

Anyway that's my update and I'm going to bed with bruised pride

Rare Shrunken Heads can be pretty tasty as well, possible skill(s) and resistance prefixes, strength and life suffixes, and native skills (class item bonus), and a socket from Larzuk (if available) or even a prefix, you can end up with a pretty decent piece of equipment. 'Rhyme' tends to be MUCH easier to put together, and a fantastic shield, so pretty hard to beat.

Don't forget that 'Spirit' will come with 35% Cold and Lightning resistance (and Poison, too!) but you'll need at least 146 strength as a Necromancer to wield it. That one comes with a truckload of amazing stuff like life, faster hit recover and cast, skills, and a BIG bump in Mana.

Gamble amulets when you have extra cash, rares can be some of the best. Skills, strength, cast rate, life, mana, resistances, MF, teleport charges -- all possible on rares. Don't forget to keep an 'Edge' bow in the stash for gambling!

So finally found a head with +2 CE and +1 amp damage and got two sockets from larzuk and made a rhyme with it. Resits are now a bit more acceptable so off to the maggot lair we go. Finger on the juvie potion........

Well um, deeded Hades. Got cornered in the Maggot Lair by Stone Skin Conviction Beetle. One of them somehow came up from around a corner while my merc was dealing with the Itches. By the time I could react, too late. Lost some reasonable poor mans gear. Never mind, Paladin time I think. I feel the need to hit something

NOOOOOOOO!!!! I get it though - it's an easy place to get impatient. The Maggot Lair is the absolute bane of my Necro's existence. Just an absolute PITA to get to Coldworm, though once there clearing his little nest is a breeze.

Honestly thought I had cleared that corridor thoroughly. Must have activated a boss pack without seeing them. Gutted. Lost a Partizan insight, a rhyme head, lore helm and smoke armour. Thankfully easily replaced once I get someone to that level . Fairwell Hades, hello avenging paladin.

Rest in Peace, Hades.
