23 Runeword Search Thread

i agree it's quite possible that they're selling us WoW and through this the y'll be hints on ... maybe the beta site of WoW??? i dunno. i've looked and nothing seems to indicate this.

you guys are gonna try every possible permutation and then bliz is gonna be like "ok, the 23 new runewords were activated today! they weren't activated before! here's the list:"

The BETA WoW site will be my next target for deciphering after I finish the Warcraft history site.

Actually, looking at the WoW history, it seems that capitalization is definately spotty, looks like an obvious code. I bet there are numerical examples to get us to the right Chapter/Paragraph/Sentence/Word/Letter in word to spell out rune words. I need any number info whatsoever. But here are page 3's guesses.

Sorry if any of these are re-posts. Chapter 3 was ALL about ORCS, so That might factor in. It was also shorter and more boring.

"elder orc shaman, Ner'zhul," - Nef+Zod+Thul= 3 socket stave would be only guess.

Chapter 4's guesses.

"King Llane, the noble monarch of Stormwind" - Lem+Lum+Amn+El (or some other combination) in a 4 socket shield aka MONARCH.

"Lothar stormed Medivh's tower-fortress of Karazhan with the help of the wizard's young apprentice, Khadgar" - khadgar's pipes of insight are an item in warcraft 3. Looks like anagram magic maybe?

"Aided by his lieutenants, Uther the Lightbringer, Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, and Turalyon, Lothar " - Too much capitalization and listing for it's own damn good; suspicious.

"Though Lord Lothar fell in battle at the Spire's base, his lieutenant, Turalyon," - Tir-Ral-Ohm

"fortress of Nethergarde "- Nef-Thul-Gul-Dol Armor

"The new Horde, led by veteran chieftains such as Grom Hellscream and Kilrogg Deadeye (of the Bleeding Hollow clan), " - Suspicious Parentheisis use. KDBH?- Ko+Dol+Ber+Hel

"King Terenas of Lordaeron, convinced that the orcs were preparing a new invasion of Azeroth, assembled his most trusted lieutenants. He ordered General Turalyon and the archmage, Khadgar, to lead an expedition through the Dark Portal to put an end to the orcish threat once and for all. Turalyon and Khadgar's forces marched into Draenor and repeatedly clashed with Ner'zhul's clans upon the ravaged Hellfire Peninsula. " Hellfire Peninsula? Hmm. Hellfire was the d1 expansion interesting. What about that clue talking about firey messas or something like that? Anyone see any connections?

"venerable shaman Drek'Thar" =?

"The ancient subterranean kingdom of Azjol-Nerub"- A Kingdom of spider...spider caves anyone?

"archmage of Dalaran, Kel'Thuzad" - Kel Thu Zad= Ko +El+Thul+Zod or Ko+Thul+Zod 3 socket stave/orb is best guess.

Some Chapter 5 guesses:

"last of the Sunstrider dynasty: Prince Kael'thas"- Ko+Shael+Thul or something like that, highly variable.

"Using his runeblade, Frostmourne, Arthas shattered the Lich King's icy prison and thereby released Ner'zhul's enchanted helm and breastplate" - Hmm, runeblade, helm, breastplate...these have got to be clues.

Chapter 6 is not yet up...that's good because it limits the possibilities slighty.

Ike, you think a Nef is bad for normal forge, I got an El. And sorry for doubting your Countess knowledge, I had just been running her on normal a little bit and got 3-4 runes on some runs, your luck is horrible.

Farmer, if you want a list of everything tested, Wathombe is hosting my webpage. He reposts it as often as I email it too him (which has been the bottlenck thus far). And as far as keeping up with our testing, I spam the thread daily with updated grids and repost 1.07 list whenever something gets tested. Don't know what else we can do.

Still no internet connection at home, so I've lost the couple hours a week I could play. Stinks because I was just about to kill Baal and start doing NM Countess to knock off the lower runewords while you guys tackle the higher stuff with Hell Countess and Forge runs etc.

Anyway time for updates. Nothing new on 1.07 list as that forum is not too organized and has recently been spending a lot of time repeat testing.

Musings on Method

It has been mentioned a couple of times now that there are no runewords with the same rune twice. To those who believe this to be the case I direct you to the shield runeword Sanctuary - Ko Ko Mal.

I know you guys are really trying but some suggestions are stretching things a bit. A list of names will always contain a large amount of capital letters in it. There is nothing suspicious here. Words in parenthesis, at least those mentioned in the last few days are not suspicious but entirely in keeping with the nature of the History of WoW document.

Making the name Ner'zhul into a runeword Nef+Zod+Thul (this is an example there are many similar suggestions), is extremely unlikely as you have 2 partial rune names and an initial. In this instance the more likely combination would be El+Thul. This may, or may not, be in a (Elder) Staff, but that does not rule out other items. Why El and not Nef? the letters 'r' and 'l' are liquid, interchangeable, and therefore almost the same (think of the chinese stereotype of pronouncing 'rice' as 'lice', despite the fact that the chinese language has both the 'l' and the 'r' sound). There is no reason to add a Zod in here as, again linguistically, 'z' and 't' are fairly closely related ('t' is closer to 'd' but 'd' is actually close to 'z'). I strongly doubt that Blizzard have a linguist working for them but there is no need for this. Instead of reading the words, say them out loud baring the runes in mind and you may just have a breakthrough. If necessary (and you have warcraft) try and say the names with an orcish or undead "accent". Try this with Ner'zhul and you will see what I mean. There is another possibility for this name, using this vocalisation method - Ber Gul, less likely but it should be remembered. Maybe it's because it is 5:45 in the morning but I do find it interesting that Frostmourne is mentioned along with Ner'zhul's enchanted helm as thul is an ice rune.

King Llane: again there is a likely incorrect assumption being made here in that the word Monarch (which means king or queen) is a reference to a shield. By thinking it is a shield the method used to extract runes from the name leaves room for only 4 runes (the maximum that can be fit). This method arbitrarily deletes a letter from the word to make it fit the percieved item. Try a combination along the lines of Lem+Lum (Lem+Lem, Lum+Lum, Lum+Lem, don't forget Lo) +Amn+Nef+El (El, Eld, Eth) in a SCEPTRE which is a universal device of monarchy and has room for 5 runes.

Basically what I am trying to say is that if you think there may be a promising method, such as anagrams, be strict with your method. Don't try and fit the potential runeword into a preconcieved item. Find the rune word before the item. While a Shaman may use a staff (or orb) he also wears armour and a helm, and there really isn't anything stopping him from using any other weapon. Come to think of it has the combination Thul+El been tested in a helm? Enlightenment would fit here with the theme of a shaman (it is listed in the 07 list as Thul+Eld (hmmm eld+thul may even be a possibility)). Perhaps you should pick a method (say anagram), then discard, for the time being, all words that do not fit with the method. Then extract the runes and look in the 07 list for an item (such as Enlightenment) that fits the 'theme' of the word you have extracted runes from. We know that some words in the 07 list have had a change in their recipe so if the runes don't match that isn't a real problem (Breath of the Dying springs to mind here).

Lord Lothar: Here is another example of where you have to be strict in your method. If a runeword were to be made from this it would not be Lo+Tir+Hel+Amn+Ral but Lem (or Lum or Lo) +Ort (or Ohm)+Tir (or Thul)+Hel+Amn+Ral.

Anyway just some thoughts...

Well, I think I'm done testing until at lease sat. evening or sun morning. I still think Thull+Ral in a hammer is a good check - haven't gotten a hammer to test it w/ yet.

For those who were complainging about "having to sort through all the one's that have already been tested", it's all right here in Wathombes spreadsheet (which needs to be updated): So no more complaining! ~psy

Great! Thanks for anything you can test!

Here's my latest spreadsheet: http://home.comcast.net/~wathombe/diablo2/wathombes_runeword_database.xls
Look for the "Armor" and "Helm" tabs on the bottom. My grids only go up to Io.

To Sokar:

I'm not being strict with my "methods" because I'm sure Blizzard hasn't been either. I'm positive there isn't "one" method of figuring out all the rune-words; that's why everyone on this forum is trying something a little bit different.

I agree with all your suggestions; mind you everything I say is a suggestion.

I have been looking at the Diablo vs WoW new picture located here poster and if you take a look in the very bottom left, directly under diablo's right knee-spike, you can see a symbol. Of what kind I'm not sure.

It really looks like: a "2", Sol rune, or Lum rune. See it?

Then go directly right of it; the barbarian's left shoulder pad has a very "Ort" looking symbol on it. Continue right farther and the tauren has an ankh symbol under his...waist.

These are the most clear symbols I can spot in these pictures, but I also see a lot of other marks that could be "something". Tell me what you guys think.

The drawing quality of this picture is FAR BELOW Blizzard standards; I think that makes it overly suspicious.

Team:

I've just uploaded the newest versions of each spreadsheet:

wathombe's grids

shaft's grids

Sorry for the delay. Meetings this morning.

I will be improving my grids soon, as well: adding rows and columns up to Zod to the 2soc testing grids, and adding headers to the 2soc testing grids (as the item-type tabs at the bottom of the page are too unobtrusive). I've got some paperwork to do, so I may or may not get to this today.

More soon...

No new tests today, but I'm going away starting tomorrow for all next week and I won't be back until next weekend. Sorry I can't help with Hellforge rushes this coming week, keep up the great work though. See you all later.

Hello,
I had an idea this morning:

Maybe the Trivia Q&A are meant to direct us to certain chapters in the WoW history.

So the Druids last battle in WoW would be the chapter "the battle of mount hijal"

I have not read through the entire history, but I guess it would be pretty difficult to find connections for Baboon Demon, Blunderbores (Trolls?), Geglash and the Symbol from round 10

Pandemonium Fortress is maybe a clue towards Stormwind or The Frozen Throne (too far fetched?)

Drognan could be a hint at Medivh

1.07 runeword deception = Ko + Dol + Eth = Code

damn it has allready been tested
